Something to actually make your crew and all that ship space useful. They just cast magic buffs and invade my personal space. But this can't happen until ships do something other than mask the loading screen from world to world.

A mod that adds in space stations (which would be similar to outposts, but with more quests and what not).
A mod that adds plethora of (good) biomes, kind of like how Variety Is The Spice did.

It's hard to hear for some but despite its many flaws Starbound is actually good and fun. At least for a while anyway.

Go pirate Signs of Life and Edge of Space. They're shit. Ugly and clunky as fuck too. If that's the competition they must think "why try harder?"

The game is also pretty robust when it comes to mods. You can install and uninstall willy-nilly and the game can take it and generally not render your save file corrupt or unusable. No need for clean saves or merged patches and all the other shit you normally need to do for a modded game. I can only assume this is all a fluke or clever trick and on the back end the game is tearing itself apart.

The Glitch ship literally has some kind of massive starship cannons like all the other ships do. Given their fascination with excessive force, these cannons presumably are impractically large and powerful, more than capable of destroying other ships but a lot of otherwise useless weight or an energy drain. Probably the only race with better warships are the floran since they have basically every type of weaponry strapped onto their shit, but the floran and glitch are generally allies and closer than any other two races. Were there a war fought primarily in space, it's clear what faction would win.

But those with ships are all malfunctioning glitch whose programming has broken. They don't necessarily need air or anything else, it's just gameplay mechanics. And in fact the lore that they need any of that shit was retconned in later because chucklefucks were too lazy to go with their earlier plans of making races mechanically unique. Same reason amphibious hylotl no longer have gills in addition to lungs and avians are not able to fly from birth and merely clipped but instead just have vestigial wings.

Player Avians were outcasts from their religion, while NPC Avians were either zealots of other outcasts. They had a sacrifice where they'd throw females from a high tower to "join Kluex" or something like that.
Floran were insane hunters who ate anything that was made of meat. Trusting one was like playing Russian Roulette with five bullets in a six slot chamber.
Glitch didn't change at all, and are the same as before.
Hylotl were much more terrifying, and it was HEAVILY implied that they were the ones who unleashed the tentacle monster that destroyed Earth.
Penguins were criminals, nothing more.
Agaran were hostile and parasitic, evident by pods that clearly hatched/converted people and heavy overgrowth in unnatural ways covering buildings.
Novakid, Alpaca, Frogg, and Fenerox weren't around back then.

So I unsubscribed from all the steam workshop stuff, I downloaded the modpack for Zinc's server and put it where it needs to be, I set max team to 10, I've allowed assets mismatch and even made a new character. I still can't join. Send help.

Either get the max ammount of crew for your ship or fork over a bunch of cash to the fellow at penguin bay. You'll need to give some upgrade modules to the merchant with both.

You need to solve quests for NPC.
Afterwards the NPC might or might not offer himself/herself as a crewmember you can hire.
Once you gain a certain amount of crewmembers (2 for the first upgrade) you will gain a license for the next bigger ship class. You can then talk to Penguin Pete and bring him Upgrade Modules to upgrade your ship to the bigger size.
If you don't want to hire more crewmembers you can at some point purchase fake licenses at the outpost. It's the shady shop right next to Petes.
