Secret Final Boss fight against Fate itself

Actually difficult and unpleasant to play but if you beat it you get the ending where you do save everyone.

Except the final choice to save everyone you have to make is that you don't get to see the fruits of your labor and the game will permanently lock itself from you ever replaying. No Goodbyes. No long drawn outseeing everyone off. No farewells. No seeing how everyone is doing. You beat the final boss. You get your choice. You select Yes and you get a credits sequence with no music and no characters in it that ends with, You Saved Everyone with a picture of a Golden Flower on the title menu and all the options on the title menu Gone.

That's irrelevant, since all it means is that in the end the player didn't sincerely want to do the thing necessary to save everyone.

That they didn't care about the world and it's characters enough to accept that for everyone to be happy and saved that they have to deny their own ability to interact with it. That's why the ending sequence has to be so blunt. If it's just a cut to black, a credits call and a simple message that means it's not some amazing moment that makes people want to relive it.

It's simply posing a question to an answer.

Yes, but that's only because you believe that saving everyone is some sort of reward for playing the game a certain way. That you as the player are never forced to offer anything up or asked of anything uncomfortable.

You as the player are forced to trust the rules of the game. That doing X will provide the result programmed into the game.

Answer the choices this way to get this path.

This is the game just telling you what you need to do to get this result. The choice you have to make.

The choice that results in a certain outcome. If you start doubting what the game is telling you, then you might as well doubt everything that occurs in the game has any validity.

An ending is simply what the game is telling you happened, just with varying degrees of fanfare.

It's an ending that simply serves to ask the Player what they really want.

A fun adventure game they can revisit and have fun with and feel good about them self whenever they like?

Or a question that asks the player, just how much do they care about what happens to these characters? Are they just a diversion? Are they just something to pick up every once in a while? Do you just interact with them to feel good? Do the rules of the game suddenly not matter if you don't like them? Are you willing to give something up to achieve a result?

The ending and a good chunk of the latter part of the story has its share of problems, especially with how Sans is depicted and just how bleak it got, but it met my expectations. I didn't think the author would give it a depressing ending where everyone died, so I figured she'd pull something with Flowey messing up while savescumming and placing his save point somewhere he'd be stuck losing over and over again. Flowey not fully resetting as he dies is absolute bullshit when you look at the game, but I'm willing to ignore it for a kinda happy (but not really) ending where the story is now set in an AU that would change the entire storyline of the game if Frisk fell. I don't know how she could have written the conclusion to be in any way satisfying if Flowey just reset it all, even if that's the logical ending.

I don't really care that the author headcanons Papyrus as autistic.

I'm more dismayed by the fact that for all the defiance, all the effort put into beating back Flowey and his influence, he still won. That's honestly what infuriated me more than anything, is that the entire struggle never mattered, because Flowey's world view wins out anyway. Even in his death, he won, everyone especially Papyrus lost.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not gunning for a saccharine or happy ending, I'm fine with bittersweet and even dark, just, if your entire fic hinges on the idea of Papyrus being corruptible, either go the whole nine yards, or let him have the dignity of being the moral victor.

It's alright. I like that Papyrus got tougher and I like that he actively got better. But underneath all that, there was also a clash of two different world views. Flowey believes 'kill or be killed', Papyrus believes everyone can change for the better. An ideal ending, to me, would have involved Papyrus actively standing up again Flowey like he did, but NOT killing him. That's going down to Flowey's level, that's accepting that killing is necessary.

I think it would have been a bigger impact if he rejected that mindset. Maybe someone else kills Flowey, maybe an avalanche hits from the fight and it's uncertain if he survived, maybe Flowey jumps in front of an attack to get the last laugh, but Papyrus should not have killed him. Harden him, make him more of a fighter, but if you make him suspend his core beliefs, then you're stuck with a character who is now Paprus in name only.

Snowdin was the absolute comfiest, had the best NPCs, the funniest date, and looked like it was given the most love out of all the areas. It looks like a place I'd like to visit.

Waterfall had the best atmosphere, the best music, and the best bits of lore. The melancholy there was a nice contrast right after the happy winter town and Papyrus.

Awright, I understand ya better, and I mostly agree. I thought the author wrote that last, melodramatic Gaster Blaster scene like it was Papyrus being overpowered by his magic and his need to protect Sans rather than a conscious decision to kill Flowey to save everyone else, but I might be remembering it wrong. Like it was a gut reaction he couldn't control after all the trauma he'd endured, especially after the previous instances in the story where he lost control while he was emotional. Isn't he immediately remorseful when he sees Flowey? I thought he tried to heal him or something and didn't want him to die.

Correct me if I'm wrong! I'm a little more accepting of Papyrus killing Flowey if it was unintentional and Pap feels incredibly guilty and torn up about it. I definitely agree with you that he should not outright give up on his beliefs.

If I remember right, there's a stupid part where he wakes up on the couch and sorta just accepts that he killed Flowey and that he kinda feels okay about it even though he shouldn't, now THAT part was total garbage and should have been removed or altered.

You're half-and-half correct, to be honest. The attack on Flowey was very intentional. Undyne catches him in a green attack, prompting Sans and Papyrus to blast him with full force. Sans eventually falls off and this leaves Papyrus as the only one to keep the attack going and basically pours all his power into it.

The killing intent is very much there, though he feels remorseful about it, while Flowey gives precisely zero shits and just gloats how he won. The part right after cements this, too.

The part you recall, where he's overwhelmed is actually the couch scene, where he's trying to hold onto life and let the healing magic save him. But yeah, he gets over it remarkably fast afterwards, that just adds to why I really dislike the ending.

I think, it's just cause sans tripped or something and everyone else got vine-slapped, that papyrus ended up landing the killing blow (i don't completely recall).

God, it was such a sweet fic, too. I just wished it didn't get so 'papyrus can't tell anyone! so sans suffers! so flowey continues torture! repeat!' for most of the middle bit. Didn't particularly enjoy the final fight scene either, but that's just me being oddly picky.
