From the series "Shitty BR cities seen from above in FSX with low res" comes to this thread "São Paulo seen from above in FSX with low res"

1 - We start above the central-south part of the city staring south. From here we can sort of make out the jockey club slightly above the engine pod and the billings and guarapiranga dams, south of the city. Our journey will take us over a few of the city's most important regions and landmarks

>>152223354

2 - Close to the Jockey club is the USP Cidade Universitária campus. Flying above it you can see it down from the Pinheiros river. The small green strip between the campus and the river is the Raia Olímpica. When the river still had a flood zone and wasn't rectified, they dug there and after the flooding, they trenched it in, treated the water and now it's a huge ass pool which they use to practice rowing.

This considered the old downtown part of the city. Immediately in front of the wing you can see the Altino Arantes building, it's the pointy-empire state building-like tower, commonly called "Banespa Building" or "Banespão" for being the old headquarters of the Bank of the State of São Paulo, which was called Banespa

Yup just check the thread.
Though, honestly I'm confused why the Mirage was moved for this round. With BVR missiles sure it makes sense on red but with heaters only it's arguably one of the best performing aircraft, combined with WVR already being the Russians' arena.

>yfw this is all a ploy by buddyspike to show that blue is actually the underdog and that red are just a bunch of mean old bullies who only complain about balance when it's not in their favor
>>
>>152229546
I mean, it's better than BLUFOR.

They find things to whine about even when balance is clearly in their favor.

Shit, they seem to think that only BLUFOR has issues coordinating and getting strike packages organized and operating together.

I can count on one hand the number of times REDFOR has been pushing an area and actually had an Mi-8 ready to go without having to wait on someone to go get it. across the 3 rounds I've participated in.
>>
>>152230297

I know I was shitposting

Buddyspike have a very clear blue-leaning bias, the same way the DCS community at large has a blue-leaning bias. It's only natural, I suppose, given that most people in the English-speaking DCS community come from NATO countries, or at the very least not-former-Pact-countries. Why wouldn't they prefer the aircraft that popular culture has shown to them as a superhero against the two-bit supervillain that is the MiG or the Sukhoi?

I'm not even a slavaboo I'd just like to see more not-NATO aircraft in the game and for the "red" side to stop being treated like the bad guy who's supposed to lose.
>>
>>152231012
>commies
>not evil
I bet you are underage.
>>
>>152231436

I don't think I said anywhere there that commies are anything other than shitbags

but if you want a game to actually have decent, asymmetric PvP with lines drawn at NATO aircraft v. USSR/Pact aircraft, you have to actually give the Pact guys something to fuckin' fly, and you need a community for those aircraft to actually develop. I think the numbers in recent blueflags shows that that is not the case in DCS right now- MiGs and shit are basically punching bags for the eagle drivers to shoot down and brag about.
>>
>>152231012
We actually need more NATO planes and we are rightfully getting them.

We bullied F-15's in our Fulcrums and Flankers every single round. The problem isn't the planes, its finding people who are ok with flying FC3 shit forever because new russian planes FUCKING NEVER
>>
>>152231582
Reason that there aren't many REDFOR full fidelity planes is Russias shit laws that prevent ED from making them. They then have to rely on 3rd party developers that take a million years to develop a jet and when they do its the monkey model version.
>>
>>152231773

>literally every upcoming modern aircraft is an aircraft that saw service either exclusively or primarily in service of NATO countries

>only two upcoming aircraft- the Mirage F1 and the F-14A, can be reasonably put in a Redfor setup

Red has ZERO full-fidelity modern fighters, whereas at least Blue has the Mirage

iSaTRPA.jpg
644KB, 1889x1089px
>>152231773

For Red:
7 of the 12 aircraft are FC3, 4 of which have SFM.

For the Blue:

Only two of them are FC3, and those two both have PFM's

Planned for Blue:
>F-18
>F-14A
>F-14B
>AV-8
>Eurofighter

All of which will be full fidelity, have PFM's, and be viable in modern scenarios.

You're soon going to have entire teams of these awesome aircraft. Blue flag will die because nobody will want to be stuck flying FC3 SFM MiG-29's against that.

The sad part of it all, is a full fidelity MiG-29 would fix that shit.
Its a plane that could do everything. Its THE quintessential OPFOR plane. The legendary bad guy MiG. Matches up against every single nato fighter in the game, and the ones that are on the way.

I think the only hope is that some third party group decides to do one.
>>
>>152232183

I mean I don't even give a shit if we get specifically Russian aircraft, I just want more "bad guy" planes. More stuff like the F-14A and the Mirage F1. More stuff that a mission maker could conceivably put into a semi-realistic PvP mission and have it believably be an aircraft in whatever the not-NATO guy's inventory was

Hell, make the fucking Phantom so we can say it's a Turkish/Iranian one
>>
>In the opening minutes of the 1991 Persian Gulf War on 17 January 1991, an unarmed, United States Air Force (USAF) EF-111, crewed by Captain James A. Denton and Captain Brent D. Brandon scored a kill against an Iraqi Mirage F1EQ, which they managed to maneuver into the ground, making it the only F-111 to achieve an aerial victory over another aircraft.

I'd also really dig seeing DCS's EWAR modelling open up. Live, even if it was just FC3-level shit where it isn't 100% simulated but it's enough to be functional- I want offensive jamming and shit to be a thing in DCS.

Don't. The Eurofighter's being made by the worst third-party dev whose only other released module is still absolute dog shit after being out for almost 2 years and doesn't even have a finished flight model yet.

It's the last thing anyone here is excited about because it's universally expected to be worthless.

>this means the russians won't let ED make shit

still, why couldn't a third-party dev make, say, the Luftwaffe version of the MiG-29?
>>
>>152233281
Because they still need the rights to use Mikoyan-Gurevich shit.

It's the same reason the Ace Combat games have splash screens showing all the manufacturers featured in the game, they had to pay for the rights for very likeness and branding.

Compound this problem x25,000 when dealing with sensitive (possibly classified) information detaling exactly how every bit and piece in the plane operates.

Subsystems might require yet more licensing if made by a third party, etc, etc.

So the Razbam devs didn't run into this with Dassault? LNS didn't run into this with Mikoyan-Gurevich?

That, coupled with the dubiousness of if MiG could even actually claim copyright over soviet-era designs internationally, makes me believe the lack of USSR-produced aircraft is primarily a lack of will to make one rather than a lack of ability to make one

and I can understand that- NATO jets, especially USAF/USN jets, draw in the more casual aviation fan a lot more. They're easier to fly, they're generally better for their timeframe, and they're more recognizable. A Russian jet isn't going to bring in very big sales numbers from the English-speaking crowd (The MiG-21 aside, I feel its sales numbers are probably mostly because it was the first ASM fighter with a proper fire control radar)

I dunno, I see reasons why it isn't happening, I just wish it would happen. I want to live in a world where there are well-populated asymmetric PvP servers with no FC3 aircraft in the lineup.

Yeah, I'm not certain, anon.

I still have my fingers crossed hoping that Leatherneck'll do a MiG-23 after the Viggen, F-14, and Corsair are out the door.

Shit, they already have 90% of the avionics done in the form of MiG-21bis, it'd be quick, easy, and painless for them.

I really want the FC3 menace to either go away or all be converted to full-fidelity modules. Even though I'm a massive slavaboo, the F-15 is unironically also one of my favorite airframes, too.

Maybe in a couple years we'll start getting some slav modules? I think it's more doable the earlier they go, MiG-29 might be a stretch but planes from the 70s are probably mostly doable.

M-2000C, MiG-21bis, and F-5E-3 are all unlicenced products developed without any input or recognition by the manufacturer.

Though most modules are at least developed with the tacit approval of the manufacturer, the only module that is actually a licensed product is the Huey.

That's the major roadblock for me at the moment. There's also the slight problem of normal 3D viewing controls (hat switch/mouse dragging) not working because of my head tracking, so every time I wanna dick around for a bit I have to set that up too.

The MiG-29A will get fucked by the F-15, F-14, F-18, Harrier, Mirage, Eurofighter.

Its a piece of shit plane that slavboos fly because "muh aesthetics"

The proof is that they flew migs in blue flag exclusively and got their asses blown the fuck out every time. So much so that they quit playing all together.

>The Russian Air Force grounded all its MiG-29s following a crash in Siberia on 17 October 2008.[26] Following a second crash with a MiG-29 in east Siberia in December 2008,[27][28] Russian officials admitted that most MiG-29 fighters in the Russian Air Force were incapable of performing combat duties due to poor maintenance. The age of the aircraft was also an important factor as about 70% of the MiGs were considered to be too old to take to the skies.[29] The Russian MiG-29s have not received updates since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Mig-35 is their last chance. Really hope it becomes a thing. Keeps the aesthetics of the old Fulcrums, but avionics like the Su-35.

But until then, it looks as though Russia friendship with Mikoyan ended, Sukhoi is now best friend.

Are light tactical fighters just an outdated thing?
I think its only hope is that people look at it as cheaper and simpler Su-35. I'm sure thats what its marketed as.

Light fighters are perfect for countries that don't have millions of square miles to protect, or are neutral but still need an air force for defense. See: F-5, Super Tucano, T-100, the myriad of other small fast jets used by trainers in large air forces but are still very much combat operative.

Damage in DCS in general is shit tБh. I hit an Mi-8 square in the ass end with a mistral earlier today and it flew on fine. Put a burst of the Kurfurst's 30mm onto a P-51 and it flew away under its own power.

At this point I can't really take DCS as an air-to-air combat simulator seriously. If they unfuck the missiles, damage modelling, proximity fuzing, their godawful netcode- MAYBE then, but for now I just use it for shitting on Georgian tanks in the Ka-50.

>>
>>152341016
DESU anon this is the first time I've had something blatantly ridiculous happen so I'm inclined to let it slide.

It seems to be isolated to certain modules more than anything. The Mi-8 being able to fly while on fire is nothing new though, shit's been doing that forever, it's not like it's a notoriously hardy chopper or anything..

the P-51 scenario may be fucked however. Or, you know, all sorts of shit could have happened because it's a fucking cannon shot.

That's fair enough if you don't like the aircraft. I'm not particularly bothered by it but it's pretty fun to fly. The lack of tooltips can be a bit of a pain but the ramp start is so much more simple than the A-10C that you don't really need them after your first ramp start.

BMS is also much improved by multiplayer
>>
>>152341731

I mean I played it some, and I enjoyed fucking around with infrastructure attacks and looking at my own BDAs, but the F-16 is kind of a boring plane IMO

If they get a full-fidelity F/A-18 I'll slob on their fuckin knobs though.

This concerns me every time I see it, even on older birds. It's like saying "SHOOT HERE, FUCKFACE!" to whatever manages to get on your six.

At least with twin engines you might be able to awkwardly limp home after one takes a hit.
>>
>>152344000
The f-16 has very and reliable engines though, there are videos of the engine taking a bird strike and still working enough to get the plane home.
>>
>>152340821
Well you know the mig-29A doesn't even have visible damage model in yet.
>>
>>152344206
Anon, a bird and a 20-30mm high explosive shell are very different things, and we're talking about completely different points of entry.

Still pretty cool that Vipers/Falcons have managed to get to base after sucking in a bird, though.
>>
>>152344348
Yeah, birds are a lot bigger
>>
>>152344330
I mean, it didn't seem to have taken any other damage either, but the shot was fired from within no-escape range and the dumbass was coming head-on. I expected it to do a bit more than nothing.
>>

No aircraft are designed to take accurate fire, especially not cannon hits. I doubt a single fighter airframe could withstand a burs. Watch any guncam footage of post 1st gen guns kills.

>>
>>152344912
That's what I'm thinking - pretty much any shot, especially right up the tailpipe should be more or less catastrophic for the airframe getting dunked on.

Even with two engines like on an F-14, F-15, MiG-29, Su-27, etc, I'd be surprised if the explosion from one engine getting blasted didn't kick out enough shrapnel to fuck the other up as well.
>>
>>152345636
It's more the issue of the fuel igniting, so much guncam kill footage from the various Israeli wars have a hit MiG burst into a huge fireball at the slightest hit from an ADEN.
>>
>>152345740
That was gonna' be my next point, yeah - even if hitting a non-critical component there's still fuel practically all over most airframes just waiting to burst into flames.

Why do so few sim games neglect the actual "game" part of their makeup so much? There's so much effort put into modelling and simulating aircraft and tanks and ships and shit so well, but then when you get to the actual directed gameplay shit it almost always feels like it was a secondary concern to the developers

I'm not talking exclusively about dynamic campaign systems (though those are a very good example of directed gameplay being a serious development consideration), but just like... actual mission content and shit, ones that don't break if you fly or drive or cruise slightly out of spec or do something out of turn, and are actually more complex than just "find the bad guy in this area and kill it". Or, mission editors that don't rely on shitloads of unstable user-coding to actually do anything beyond make some AI units rigidly follow a series of waypoints. This shit can't be that hard, can it? To actually make a simulation game fun to play beyond the initial rush of learning how to operate a new vehicle?

>>
>>152347070
That's actually a good question and the answer I think stems from the obsessive demand for ultimate realism at all costs and prioritize it above all else. DCS (and modern sims in general) have raised the bar for realism so high that it's been at the cost of making an interesting game.

The developers of these sims are all small teams, and even if they wanted to make a cool ass mercenary campaign where you buy and maintain your own plane and squadron through a cool campaign with a story, there's just not enough budget or time left over to do those things. There's also no demand for it as the "simulation value" of a sim is what's apparently most important to everybody and supposedly what brings in the money. I think there's also an aspect of the developers just loving the simulation aspect of it, and the kinds of people attracted to this kind of job are the very analytical engineer types and not the creative types.

There's no pressure either internally or externally to really make a game out of these sims.

Simracing has this exact same issue these days as well.
>>
>>152347070
I think it's because developers who are good at gameplay design get snapped up for normie projects.

A lot of devs on realistic games are egotistical and defensive and say 'duh war is boring' or something to that effect to cover up the lack of gameplay.
>>
>>152348337

Planes and mercs died because nobody fucking did anything with it. There were ideas there, but nobody would take initiative to act on anything.

But what should you expect from a group of lazy autists

>>152348337

It's just so fucking mind-boggling to me, man. If I got even a token campaign with some degree of persistence- like, if the jet I took into combat and took light AAA to the wing had to be taken off the flight line for a couple of days to plug the holes, which meant that I'd be one plane short for a following sortie- I'd be happy.

the conspiracy theorist part of me is saying that DCS actively avoids making their game more interesting to fuel the hype for new aircraft, as that's basically all that adds any variety to the game and it guarantees some degree of sales even on boring-ass aircraft like the l-39

>Planes and mercs died
It died because it was a dumb idea that was never going to work in DCS where you have to buy aircraft with real money, many people only have a handful of modules.

It would only work in a game like IL2 1946 with gorillions of planes all included in the same package.
>>
>>152349621

The main idea of planes and mercs isn't buying planes, it's buying weapons. Bombs, missiles, rockets, shit like that- if you read through the OG planes and mercs shit most of the pilots stuck with the aircraft they started the campaign with.

In DCS, it was really just a neat idea to force a bit more variety in aircraft weapon loadouts. There are a lot of missiles in DCS that just aren't worth using because there are much better ones available. Same goes for bombs- why ever use a standard mk.82 when you can drop a JDAM? Adding in pricing for weapons would force a degree of variety to player weapon loadouts, as those more capable weapons would obviously cost more and thus would only really be worth using if you had money to burn or were accomplishing some high-paying objective with them.
>>
>>152349849
Tyrannik & I discussed it in ts a while back and didn't see a way to do that save for out of game pen & paper RPGing, which given how autistic /simg/ is would probably not work out well. The armoury system for airbases in DCS is not particularly fleshed out and can be buggy if you try and do fancy things with it.
>>
>>152350021

I'm aware that it'd have to be done via pen and paper- I think I was talking about that being the likely route in the thread back when planes and mercs was one of the things we were talking about. So yeah, you couldn't just open the floodgates and let in everybody with a /da bois/ tag join up, but I still think it was an idea worth exploring a bit more than we ended up doing.

What would be the average altitude that a world war 2 plane would release their bombs against an enemy ship? Both for diving and level bombing.
>>
>>152371136
I'd imagine diving you don't want to be too close obviously, but you're still trying to hit a relatively small and potentially moving target. As for level bombing? I didn't realise they were used against ships.
>>
>>152373109
>level bombing? I didn't realise they were used against ships.

I don't know either.

I can hit a ship in DCS at 1000ft level bombing with the mig-21/F-5E tho
>>
>>152334409
pure sex
>>
>>152373520
Level bombers are far too big to be attacking a ship with if you're going to be flying a predictable path with consistent speed and altitude in order to hit the target accurately, and you're gonna need to otherwise your bombardier sight is useless.

I'd say dive bombers were the way to go, and altitude of release is really just whenever you can loose them to hit consistently and not get fucked by enemy fire, There's a reason the US navy used a fair few dive bombers in WWII, and it wasn't only because they were smaller and easier to operate off a carrier than say a heavy bomber.

I guess skip bombing is technically level bombing? So you would fly perpendicular to the ship at very low level, then release the bomb in such a way that it skips over the water until it reaches the ship. Ideally the bomb would then detonate.

The other option is to fly along the centerline. Again, you need to be as low as possible. For one, the lower you are, the less time the bombs are in the air, thus reducing CEP as well as the target's time to dodge. The other thing is that by flying low, you are harder to make out against the horizon (than for instance against the sky) so flak gunners have a harder time.

Level bombing ships from high altitude is not a tactic that is a thing.

What you need to account for in both those scenarios is the time-delayed fuzes you have on those bombs. Obviously you need a minimum delay of a few seconds as to not frag yourself. If you're attacking with wingmen, those need to be over the target either in the same timeframe (i.e. when the first bomb is still counting down) or much later. However, you don't want the timers to be too long either, because generally, bombs don't float on water. Now, the bomb detonating in the water under the ship causes considerable damage as well (sometimes even more than it would had it actually hit the ship) but if it goes too deep, it does nothing again.
>tl;dr
Fuzes are important but mostly guesswork.

cont.
>>
>>152376458
cont.

For dive bombing, drop altitude is a function of your own fear of the enemy gunners, and eventually the ground level. Quoting from literature, "with targets that small, they had to dive as low as possible, but on the other hand didn't have to start their dive all the way up at 4000m" (that being the typical cruising altitude of a StuKa. Typically, you would "stair-dive", i.e. select a target, start your dive, target moves, abort the dive, select a new one, etc.
Diving (keep in mind the StuKas did vertical dives, scary shit yo) to 500m and then releasing the bombs was considered the lower end of the spectrum then, and really 500m is not a lot to pull out of a 90° dive. But still with ships being somewhat nimble (compared to, say, a bunker) and most importantly moving in unpredictable patterns, hitting them with your average 250 or 500kg bomb is largely also a matter of luck.

Quotes and paraphrasing from Cajus Bekker, "Angriffshöhe 4000", Gerhard Stalling publishing house, pp.122, 126-128, 286-289.

The Norden bombsite was actually designed so that high altitude bombers could hit ships. Of course in practice this didn't go to plan as was seen in the battle of midway
>>
>>152377343
>Doesn't matter as long as you are low as shit.
Uh... which part?

Yeah, hitting ships with (unguided) bombs from high altitude was a bad idea as soon as the ships figured out that "random zigzags as soon as a plane is in sight" massively reduces the chance of getting hit

A flight of 4 MiG-31's can cover an airspace 900km wide, detecting targets that are on the deck to near space.

For reference, in DCS the distance from the most north-western air base (Anapa) to the most south-eastern airbase (Tbilisi) is 730km.

4 Foxhounds could cover the entire Caucasus map.

If you've ever wondered why Russia still has a dedicated interceptor in service, there's your answer.
The MiG-31BM is an absolute beast.

F-18's, F-14's, Harriers.

Did they never go up with that many then? 99.999% of patrols never fire a missile so I wonder what the standard load out was. Maybe 4?

Since its DCS I fully expect everyone to go up with that many, and just jettison them into the water if they are coming home.

I'd really enjoy walking around in the bridge for example. But yeah, it's probably going to be primarily the hangar, just as you say.

>ability to store lot more
Nah, I don't think they'll move past the real world aircraft carrying capacity. It can carry about ... 12-24 aircraft? Not that much, despite being in the ~50-60,000 tonne displacement category (it's still essentially a super-Kiev). The russkies are still holding over the stripping of anti-ship missiles, ergo there's no aircraft storage space increase to justify that...

The 109 is actually kind of terrifying to fight in shit like the P-51 if the pilot knows his shit. It climbs like a rocket.

>>
>>152446746

it'll be the best as soon as they actually fucking animate the skids so that there's some feedback to the pilot while he's picking it up off the ground

that being said polychop are ABAP and I'll probs preorder the bo-105 as soon as they open it up for that. I hope they do more helichoppers, I fucking love whirlybirds in DCS.
>>
>>152446696
Outmaneuvering someone in a dogfight and obliterating them with a cannon is the best feeling, but diving on someone with the 109 is a weird delayed gratification kind of thing (depending on armament).

>the F-35 is going to be rendered obsolete within the decade by Russian and Chinese advances in infra-red sensor systems and anti-stealth ground radar.
>>
>>152450901
Why would ground radar defeat stealth? Sure, knowing proper terrain height is important to avoid crashing when flying low, but dirt is pretty easy to see.
>>
>>152450901
>Implying these will render the aircrafts' sensors useless
>>
>>152450901
>>152451165
I was proving a point to the anon I was replying to by posting stupid b8. US stealth technology is going to be the thing to beat over the next 20 years and it isn't going to happen easily.

On topic tho, how do you think the F-35's sensors will effect SEAD operations? From what they've hyped up, it seems like it would make air defenses a non-threat.
>>
>>152450901
Holy shit the absolute madman it actually worked.

>You guys think there is any chance of a sale on the Mi-8 soon cause I might snag that too.
I'd wager the Mi-8 will be fully released with it's door gunners before Christmas, I reckon it'll go on sale then like the Bf-109 just did.
>>
>>152452167
For a planefag, what would be the best modules to grab? All I have is FC3 that I got during the summer sale. I would generally prefer something a bit closer to modern because lolnopedals
>>
>>152452167
I thought the Mi-8's already had its release?
>>
>>152452284
Even though it's very much finished afaik it's still technically early access kek
>>
>>152452271
MiG 21 is always relevant in ops. F-5 is good and the Mirage is the most modern fixed wing module so far
>>
OPS WHEN

NEVER ANY OPS FUCKING HAPPEN

OPS WHEN
>>
>>152452271
desu it all depends on what you want, the A-10C, Mirage 2000C, and MiG-21bis are all very different, fight different opponents etc.

The Mirage is very much an FC3+ experience, you'll be doing the exact same things, just simulated to a more accurate degree. The Mirage is FBW and doesn't require pedals for any more than taxing.

Flying the MiG-21 or F-5 is like that period at the beginning of STALKER where you're more or less a hobo. They have rather limited weapons, the systems are much more finicky than the 4th gen jets and you need to be far more mindful of your energy when flying them. Both are flyable without pedals, but having them will certainly help you turn tighter in the '21. The F-5E doesn't seem to sideslip much if at all at the moment and so I never really touch the pedals in flight, howver this lack of sideslip could be a bug with the FM.

If you want a nopedals heli the Ka-50 is the most forgiving of the choppers.

Remember that most people don't have pedals, if you have a rotary stick you'll be fine most of the time.

>NEVER EVER
>>
>>152451496
I suspect it will make HARMs obsolete. I've been wondering why it doesn't even seem planned for the F-35 to carry them, but after playing BMS and using SDBs to take out SAM sites, I think that's why. Imagine having a HTS with the HAD screen but integrated into your HSD that you can slew a super TGP over to any time any kind of threat appears. Then you just lob an SDB their way and that's that.
>>
>>152451496
>>152459074
Not a non-threat certainly, but a VLO craft with modern sensor and the ability to datalink back to missile trucks would certainly make things a lot less painless, probably.
