Dota has pretty good hero diversity in pro play. I think something like 100 heroes were picked in the big tournament. A big part of it is that league has mid/top/jungle/adc/support roles set in stone, and champs are designed and/or tailored post-release to fit into a specific role. This means that people can more easily measure how strong a champ is since you just need to compare it to all the other champs that go in that role. Dota is more freewheeling in strategy, so it's harder to figure out the best heroes.

The problem with bans is that queuing already takes a long time. I think 10 might be overkill, but that's my opinion. If they did it correctly where each player locks in their first three choices of bans in like 15 seconds we could greatly expediate the process. With that system everyone gets bans they want with no overlap even if it fucks with drafting a bit. Not that it'll matter with 90% of the playerbase being in the shitter tier. I just think that if they don't do something along these lines drafting is going to be fucking painful. I'd be more interested in a pro-game exclusive draft mode where a champion was removed from a champion pool once it was picked for the rest of a set. Bans would still be pickable/bannable in successive games, but the first ten champs in the first game can literally not be played for the rest of the set, and the same to the ten in the second game, and the third, potentially fourth and fifth.

If I'm "good" at Leona, but want to climb out of the hellhole that is platinum, would it be a bad idea to just keep playing Leona as opposed to queueing mid/top as malz/wu/morde/annie/lissandra/etc.?

I've been playing Velkoz support and mid and advancing through platinum at a pretty steady clip. I win more from mid, but I still do well just blowing people up bottom and roaming when I can get away with it. Leona is almost certainly a better roamer from bottom lane than Velkoz is.

Honestly, I think the biggest reason I lose more form bottom is because I'm still dumb enough to give the vaunted 4 man ganks a chance to work. As support you can watch where your jungler and the enemy mid laner are. If the mid laner disappears and your jungler isn't close enough to rush to your aid (or hell even if you think just the enemy jungler might be coming) you need to use your situational awareness to tell your adc to back up. You can carry just by making sure those ganks fail.
