I finished leveling up one of each pupu to 4* and max ability level. Since I have nothing better to do, I will get another 4* set (but low ability level) for extra resists (+25% each card) and some random extra cards for future en- cards that we will probably get on 1st Anniversary event (Pupu cards have resists for the same element while new en- cards have resists for opposite elements).
Still unsure how to progress with the rest of my deck because I'm still using upgraded Onion Knight since I haven't pulled a job card yet.

Gabranth was at half health before my life siphon/ace striker using Balthier even had his first SSB charge.
He crumbled under shout RW and record synergy weapons. Even my Vaan with a 4*++ axe hit damage cap with his breakdowns.

Is it normal for the main character to just be destroying every enemy with attacks that do 1k damage and 300 damage to flans?

I've got solid synergy weapons, but you can completely ignore the fact that I've got Apocalypse Shield and Mist Overload, as I literally never used them during the fight.
Vaan died near the end but I sort of let him because I knew I wasn't going to need him to finish out the fight. There is little damage in the fight until Gabranth gets to about 40% and he starts doing quite a lot of aoe damage - but the fact that he only does physical is nice; you don't have to worry about having magic breakdown or shellga.
I used war dance once near the end, but realistically I didn't /need/ to use it, I wasn't going to lose if I didn't use it like not having an AoE heal in some fights might just cause you to lose. I used Strahl Strife only twice, but those two times probably did about 20K and then 33k, so it was quite a bit of damage. Maybe enough to be a game changer since he does a lot of AoE damage at low health.

You forget that not only do you have to survive the battle against her, but also summon Diabolos against her as well to get her. And since she likes her light element attacks, the only viable way to summon Diabolos is to have CoD/Tillith equip it.

Thankfully I have CoD, so whenever Maxwell drops here, I have a good shot at getting her.

They should also start having battles with the 5* base units that will drop the character after meeting a certain condition. For example, to get Lightning to drop as a character in her boss battle would be to summon Odin against her.
