Just a heads up for people using the GOG version, I think you can update using >>151839020

Don't overwrite the .exe or any other files, just get what's inside "GAMEDATA\PCBANKS" and overwrite in your game directory, make a backup of that file if you want in case shit goes wrong. I replaced it and noticed a increase in performance, no problems with save game too since you don't replace the .exe

Why does every fucking planet look like this? You land, and that's what the planet looks like. There aren't different zones on planets. You will never fly around a planet and find a big mountain range: either the entire planet is mountainy, or basically none of it is. If there isn't snow where you land, there isn't any anywhere on the planet. All you have to do is walk 10 minutes and you've essentially seen the whole planet. Why no planets with forests, mountain ranges, proper rivers? Yeah, there are forest planets, but no planets that have a forested area in the east, and maybe a mountain range at the poles. They're all one note. it sucks ass.
>>

Most real planets only have one type of environment.

Same goes for a lot of Sci-Fi planets.

They should make "dual planet" types. Two types of variation per planet. More interesting but don't show all possible types on one planet

Earth is actually a pretty rare breed with an axis that takes it back and forth for winter/summer. Look at mars for example. That shit is barren constantly. Venus a foggy mess, there will be no seasons.

I could see if it was a planet that didnt rotate, it would have two sides be very different, but a rock that close to a sun will be cooked, and stay cooked.

Colorful mining simulator was your dream game?
>>
>>151850864
It's so you don't have to land in specific places on a planet, you can find the same resources/environment etc. wherever you land on the planet. Also encourages you to go to lots of different planets. Instead of just flying to the north/south pole you have to find a cold planet and shit.
>>
>>151851473
The game you always wanted has dozens of alien bases on every planet, all of which are identical? Even though they're from different races? Weird.
>>
>>151851398
That's climate though. He was also talking about geology. Especially a planet with water should have tectonic plates, mountain ranges and stuff like that.
Also, we're getting scientifically accurate here so it doesn't matter much as far as NMS is concerned, but a planet without seasons is probably tidally locked, and so it should be half frozen. None of the planets in NMS are tidally locked.

Who else fucking HATES the way the NPC "intelligent aliens" are handled. There is always one in every trade post/space station/etc. Always just one, and they never move or do anything, just stand there. They aren't characters, they're stupid guessing games/dialogue puzzles.

NPC ships land and takeoff like fucking crazy at space stations but you will never ONCE see an alien actually get out of or into one.

Crashed ships will NEVER have more than 1 extra inventory slot. I.e. if you current ship has 20 slots, it's legit impossible to find a crashed ship with more than 21 slots. The only way to really upgrade is to buy one.

It would be cool that you can buy ships off NPCs if there was also like, a spaceship garage/store. the fact that it's the ONLY way to buy ships is fucking bizarre

>>151852371

More aliens would be nice, but it seems like the idea is that they're just too busy to be anywhere. I wish you could find some just out on the planets away from outposts sometimes. Maybe violent ones or black market traders. This world is nearly completely void of intelligent life. No wonder history was lost. No one ever steps outside.

>>
>>151852893

Name one game with realistic generated space that isn't so limited that every player will visit every planet.

You have to be able to land on these planets and walk around them as well. Planets so large it's impossible to walk the entire surface on foot.

>>151852615

Always have heridium, plutonoum, and thamium9.

I also recommend holding on to a full stack of rare minerals if you're able. My current upgrade needs 600 nickel and 600 aluminium and suddenly they just don't exist anywhere.
>>
>>151852915
But you bought starbound so you might as well kill yourself.
>>
>>151853096
Not him, but you're right: people saying the game isn't realistic need to shut up; the game is trying to be like 70s sci-fi art. And if it was, that would be fucking AWESOME.

But it's not, it completely failed in that goal. Just look at your picture! It shows a grassy plain near a forest, with a snow mountain in the distance.

This would be completely fucking impossible to find in NMS. At best you'd find a plain planet and then a forest planet and then a snowy mountain planet. But there's no geographical variety like you see in 70s sci-fi art.

>>151853178

Wouldn't the game just be better if there were biomes on planets though? I don't see the negative. In a free form exploration game, jet out and find another interesting planet if you want to, stick around if you don't.

Can't see how it would be worse than the current system of "all planets are boring, walk 5 minutes and you've seen the whole planet" affair. If the planets gonna be so consistent, with no biomes, like they are now, they might as well be super Mario Galaxy sized planets.

>>151855161
Have buildings increase production of a specific resource on the planet each day. Limit of 2-4 buildings.
Silicates, oxides, each category. Think 0.5 or something per building, so no one colony will ever give you very much at all. Maybe double that for common elements, halve it for rares, and you have to choose which type the building is harvesting.

Hook them all up to your freighter, and then you just need a new game mechanic to spend the dosh & resources on in the long-term.
Would be cool if they let you view the manifest from each of your colonies, what they produced each week.

Honestly that's a good point but base building goes against every component of this game's gameplay. Up this point it's always been "move forward and don't go back", lessening the value of potential biomes. If they add more incentives to stay put, the argument for biomes will be stronger. But that would be a fucking stupid move on their part trying to do a complete 180 on the games direction.

I don't think I got a free warp cell until a while later at one of the atlas monoliths after choosing freely.

Honestly I have had no trouble playing freely and am having fun exploring. My main gripe is how the scanner seems to be shit at accuracy. I have a +2 and +3 on my multitool and it can go super far and it constantly doesn't find points of interest ?'s. I also do fly bys over the ground traveling point to point fast and constantly see visible landing spots and waypoints the scanner didn't hit. It's rather annoying.
>>
>sometimes the game won't register blueprints you've got
>acquired warp drive theta and +3 boost for the jetpack 3 times already
>it says I already have it each time
>can't craft it because it doesn't show up

On a side note, the HUD is intrusive as fuck and sometimes the "scanner recharging" message won't disappear for a long long time. There isn't even an option to remove the HUD, which is like the first thing you do in a fucking "exploration" game.

How fucking incompetent can the developers be really?

You guys are all aware that sprint>melee>jet pack is the fastest way to move around right? And that you can just let go of the multitool beam for a second and resume without ever waiting for the cooldown? Honestly if they patch these out I'm done.

So much weird amateur shit going on in this game. Boltfire mode does not automatically reload but the grenades do. Sentinels attack you for mining anything but will always leave you alone when collecting any of the big rare element pillars. 30% of the time you take off from the surface your ship flys straight up into space. I'm having fun but there's so many strange quirks.

Nah, I think the blue one is laser strength. Also it appears those bars sometimes display differently between initially looking at the weapon and the comparison screen, I just checked two screenshots I had of one gun and the laser strength bar is gone in the comparison screen for some reason. Also I've only ever seen them min or max, I could be wrong about it being laser strength but it only showed up on mine after I buffed the laser with some combat modules (which you have one of but no blue, and it's not related to the railshot because the other one doesn't have that).

On the analysis icon, the outer ring is scanner strength and the inner ring is whether it has an analysis visor (which has no upgrades).

On the grenade the inner blue ring is how far you can chuck them, not sure what middle and outer are but I'm going to guess green (middle) is damage and outer is misc. upgrades or something.

Middle green bar of the gun icon is damage I think and red is fire rate but I might have that backwards.

On the laser I think the inner is "intensity" and outer is "focus," which are similar but one (I forget which) is specifically for taking out pillars and rocks, but I could be wrong.

Regardless, like I said they're based on your modules so you can just determine by those, and unless I'm way off there's no rings to show coolant rate, nor does it reveal nuances like installed ammo modules (like rapidfire, ricochet, scattershot or railshot), plus it's bugged and a bar will sometimes change between one screen and the next, so I would just judge by the modules and ignore the rings.

It's random like everything else.

One tip I can give is that you can save scum tool models, though it's weird.

Basically if you see a tool and you don't dig it, you can save, quit, start the game again and it will be rerolled with different model and different modules and number of slots. However, if you restart again, or even if you save and THEN restart again, it will still be whatever it rerolled as. No idea why it is this way but if I had to guess I'd say it's because the seed somehow comes from its geographical relation to the coordinates the planet loaded at.

The monoliths just give you the next segment of the system's race story no matter where you find it. You can jump around the Galaxy like a madman, and the net monolith you find in a Korvax system will give you the same excerpt as if you had stayed put.

Take off the Railshot Adapter mod, the Boltcaster mod with the red laser. Whatever that is, or does (I honestly noticed it doing nothing to my Mining Laser nor my Boltcaster), it jumped all of my Mining circles up incredibly, but I saw no particular difference. Also, it stacked (green outline) when placed next to a Mining mod, even though it was next to a Boltcaster mod.

I think that mod is a combat-laser mod, and not a Boltcaster mod.

I saw one of those giant biped mechas from the trailers but I'm an idiot and didn't take a screenshot.

Otherwise biggest I've found is this bananafaced guy, he's a bit over ten feet tall I think. Mecha was much taller though, it was a bit taller than the conifers on the planet I found it on. Pretty spooky, it showed up during an alert while I was raiding one of those places where you have to blast open the door. I walked out and just saw it stalking through the woods toward the facility and booked it to my ship.

>Whatever that is, or does (I honestly noticed it doing nothing to my Mining Laser nor my Boltcaster), it jumped all of my Mining circles up incredibly, but I saw no particular difference.
It does make a huge difference, not entirely positive but positive overall. Makes the laser mine way faster, makes it do about 4x damage (it's not a boltcaster mod, it's a laser mod that is meant to REPLACE the boltcaster), makes it heat up faster and use more energy (presumably to make it less ridiculously OP), makes the laser do physical damage (it can destroy doors and titanium barrels) and most importantly turns the laser red so it goes faster. It's pretty much crucial if you plan on going without a boltcaster longterm, and I'm pretty sure it's both actually stronger than a boltcaster and has longer max range.

Also even without it I had the full blue bar on the weapon icon with no weapon mods. With a boltcaster and no laser combat mods I had no blue bar.
>>
>>151860827

It's not the end, but you can start seeing black holes on your map which is a large help for reaching the end. Just grab a black hole whenever you near one instead of warping passed it.

It isn't upscaled, it has FXAA (ie a fucking glorified BLUR FILTER, like running a photoshop convolve tool over the whole image at low intensity) that you have to actually restart the game to turn off even though it doesn't tell you, and turning it off obviously gives you jaggies. Aliasing and upscaling are not inherently related.

Actually downscaling would be your best bet at making it look less trash, but the game has enough performance issues for most people as-is.

Still using the pre-order ship, several hours into the game and have a few million credits.

Doesn't seem like there's really any reason to upgrade, only so you can fit more useless resources into your inventory so you can sell them to buy a ship with more slots to put even more useless resources in to sell to get another ship with more slots, etc.

Also, is there any reason to waste slots on environmental protection? Seems you have to be a retard to die to it since every planet has literal tonnes of plutonium and other shit behind every rock to recharge it. None of the water planets have oceans deep enough to require an upgrade, etc.

I guess space combat upgrades might be useful, but even then, why would you bother engaging in it since there's no reward?

Pic unrelated, popped up in a system scan for some reason. Seen rocks of this resource before but this one literally goes 200 feet under ground and is about 200 feet tall. Going to mine it, jump into the black hole in the same system, and then I think I'll have done everything that I can be bothered to do in this game. Glad I didn't pay for it.

Also, my game is on max and it still looks like absolute dogshit. I'm yet to run into a planet that actually has any grass like they show in the steam screenshots. Everything has massive jaggies, etc. What the fuck is going on?

It's just a fucking bitch to make any progress, I've been playing since release and am only 65k Light years away from the center. your warp drive(s) will take you LINEAR distance of 1.5k but likely not center distance 1.5k the BH will take you 2k center distance and like 100k+ linear it seems. So I mean, if you can afford repairs keep doing black holes as they are quicker. though they break my warp drive upgrades fucking constantly so I don't bother with them. but I'm not trying to get to the center anymore after learning what it is/does.
So no. Also atlas v2/v3 are from manufacturing facilities but they do fuck all I believe.

>>
>why upgrade?
Certain systems need upgraded warps to get to them. They tend to havce lots of cool stuff. Upgraded warps are expensive to repair so you want to have shields and guns on your ship to fight off pirates. making a lot of trips exposes you to more pirates so you want to have a lot of inventory slots.

Some planets are super toxic/radioactive/whatever so you want the upgraded shield so you don't have to run back to your ship every 30 seconds. Some of these same planets have 0 plutonium so it can be hard as fuck to get off them until you find a "call ship to you" beacon.

v1 from the gek in the anomoly, he can also give v2 or at least I saw a screenshot showing him give it. And I mean, I've found all my upgrades and shit before getting to 60k ly but atm it's not really seeming like it gets any specialness. Maybe the star types can give you better stuff (I've been going for green/blue stars primarily.) but otherwise I haven't noticed any drastic upgrades since almost every blueprint I already know now.
I don't even go to any places like manufacturing facilities anymore, might try one and see if it gives something new.

ATTENTION FAGGOTS

I just got a v3 pass from a building. Since I'm a retard I flew away before committing it to memory, but it was either a factory or an observatory. The stargate dialing decice looking thing inside the building, did the numbers puzzle, it gave me a v3 as a reward.

It opens all doors, including the v2 ones, but doesn't open the v1 cylinders next to the flags.

Here's the thing tho.... I made only one jump the start, have no v1 and have not followed the path, I randomly jumped to a system and have been farming it since the start.

For the atlas path yes you need to hang on to them. You need 10 to complete it, and I think the terminals only give you 10 total so if you sell one you're going to need to buy one to complete it. Do that ASAP as well because I believe if you visit the last terminal without 10 in your inventory you don't get another chance to turn them in.

Not exactly going off a huge sample so far but the first two planets I've gone through on my first green star have been a "viridescent" planet with cool lifeforms and a lot of lush grass between mostly dark-blue oceans, and a rocky planet with iridium pillars and lush cactus oases, plus the terrain seems more varied and extreme than average on both. First time I've seen surface iridium or a "viridescent" planet.

all I did was change roll to q and e

My setup for most spaceship games:

>Roll: Q/E
>Throttle:W/S
>Yaw: A/D
>Pitch up/down: space/ctrl
>Strafe left/right: Z/V
>Strafe up/down: shift/C

sometimes i just put strafe on a/d and yaw with mouse though cause I usually use roll and pitch to turn

I don't know because I've only done the atlas path. I saw it explained on here that there are 3: atlas, scientist and none. Although I'm not sure how accurate that was seeing as how you'll interact with the scientists whether you go with atlas or not. Not sure if the outcomes of reaching the center are different.

Dunno if it's a known bug but if you buy a ship and then reload your previous save your current ship will have the model of the ship you just brought with the slots of your old ship.

Alright, I managed to dig the pointer to the player name. This will allow you to change your name at will. In theory it should also work fine for GOG people who are stuck with the GOG account name, but there might be problems with the server. Or maybe not. If you're brave enough to try let us know.
I appended this to my previous HideHUD hotkey table since I might as well.

Highly doubt that since the game has been notoriously laggy for PC users. I'm running GTA V on Very high at 60 FPS but this shit is giving me 22 fps inside space stations and on planets (45 in space). Something is seriously wrong with the optimization. I'm not expecting HG to have the resources and know-how of Rockstar, but still.

Agreed, it gets repetitive.
Since you can't really "rush" this game (I mean... cheats maybe) it's a lot about doing the same shit over again, mine then sell, fly then switch spot/planet, rinse and repeat.

I find jumping from galaxy to galaxy almost addicting, but it's costly so when I play I will use most my time trying to fill back my hyperdrive.

>which is old and inefficient compared to FFAA or whatever.
SSAA is old I guess and in terms of resources used it's inefficient, sure, but it will always be simply the best method in terms of sheer quality. If you mean FXAA on the other hand, it's newer (from 2008 iirc) but it's literally just a blur filter. Almost no performance impact but it doesn't actually fix aliasing AND it makes the image look really shitty. I wouldn't call it more efficient, if we say the visuals:cost ratio of SSAA is 1:1 as a baseline FXAA would still be worse despite having very little performance cost, since it makes visuals WORSE.

In like 98% of cases SMAA looks as good as SSAA, though it sometimes misses an edge, and it has a very minimal performance cost compared to MSAA and especially compared to SSAA, plus most shader injectors (sweetfx, reshade, enb) include it, it's my preferred method.

>what we got instead is a fucking spinning model of the ship with unreadable units about fuckall
I can only speak on the cockpit I have because I've had it most of the game and didn't pay attention to the starting one. Ship model tracks your shield and basically shows whether landing gear is up or not as well as displaying ship name. Presumably the model is supposed to show physical damage to the ship or specific parts that have been damage, though obviously that doesn't actually happen, despite even fucking podracing for the n64 having vehicle parts get damages and a HUD to show you where the damage is and how severe it is. The other screens show which weapon you have up (it's supposed to show its heat/energy as well but those bars are static), your speed and fuel levels, your altitude and some basic planet data (planet's name and I believe which elements occur on the planet, though you have to look very closely to see which elements are which on that screen; I'll have to check if it actually changes on other planets or if it's decorative like the heat gauge). The middle panel is still a radar, which is no longer integrated with the ship display but does show points of interest around you and how they relate to you physically as well as your field of view. These change in real time apart from those that I noted do or might not (the elements tab and heat gauge).

>>151878978

Found my first comfy planet, about 35 systems in and 2 black holes from the starting planet.

Some actual grass on the ground and I think these are the first trees I've seen so far. Only downside is it gets to -75 degrees at night, god knows what during a storm. Might actually stick around to 100% it for once, has lots of platinum that literally grows on trees.

Any tips for finding animals? I seem to always get about 70% of them and can't find the rest to save my life, which is strange because there doesn't seem to be any biomes or anything on the planet. Doesn't seem to be any water for fish, and I'm yet to see undergruond-specific animals. Gotten everything I've seen on land and in the air so far.

Also, is there a reason to bother landing at waypoints? Seems like a waste of plutonium to have to take off again.

Nope, sorry, can't find anything about it. The peculiarity of the system coordinates above is that they're in plain text instead of being saved as binary. The same is true for every single discovery you've made: they're all saved in plain text (but also binary, I've noted).
It might be that the ship configuration is only saved in binary, so it can't be read as easily.
It would be possible to find out where that's stored, and thus more info about how the system works, by switching ships a lot of times, but to do that I'd have to cheat in a lot of money and there's risk of accidentally saving and ruining my game.
Renaming the ship is easy though.

Platinum grows on trees on EVERY planet. And it's not that valuable.
Plutonium is overflowing, you shouldn't be sweating the take-off cost.

Look for fliers, (and shoot them down before studying them, like a true scientist), and check seas if there are any.
Also, animals can look very alike, so always double-check the visor for the red dot.

You can have multiple animals digging stuff up at a time.

Console users are getting used to low-resolutions and tricky visuals (prev-gen were badly outdated in it's last 2-3 years / current one already needs a major update), so they obviously won't cause any shitstorm. And yes, the PC port is absolutely unacceptable and doesn't worth a dollar.

It turned out exactly what Sean said it would be. An isolationist planet exploration game where you don't do much other than fly around and explore planets. You CAN do other stuff, but it was never the focus and never a primary concern of Sean's.

Everyone overhyped it because they chose to take vagueness to mean "U CAN DO ANYTHING"

Now go piss somewhere else, you fucking idiot. Tired of hearing it.

Grind crashed ships on your starting planet since they get expensive as fuck later on and people have mixed results grinding crashed ships post starter planet.

I have been playing this game for almost a week now and it is very satisfying. It has everything I ever wanted from my PlayStation™ 4.

In short, No Man's Sky™ is the next great leap forward in gaming and I look forward to seeing what's next from Hello Games™.

I just realized that I have used a black hole to warp fr from the venom cache world I was raiding for units. I am now a poor wanderer again after upgrading my suit slots and multitool to ridiculous levels and not my ship.

Except he lied about a number of things including being able to find other people and explore with them as well as "no paid DLC, only patches."

So, yeah...there's the fact Sean is a fucking liar so using him as a way to defend his game is actually not a good idea.

Are there any giant creatures like this in the game?

Still haven't seen one

Multitools operate on the same principle, but MUCH faster.
They can go up by 2-4 instead of just 1 slot at a time, and they cap at 24 instead of 48.

And you can get a SHITLOAD of them on a single planet, while transmission towers like to send you to the same wreck multiple times.

You should not have any problems getting a maxed out MT, unlike a maxed-out ship.

>Sean didn't lie about being able to see other people
>H-He never promised IT!!!
>Despite saying you could on numerous interviews
Take your own advice fucko this apologist drivel gives me a headache. The thing is I would have zero problem with the game if he never led us on about seeing other people you blunder across, nor if the game launched in a decently playable state. I took his statements fully at face value. I always expected a space subnautica minus base building with the chance that you could see other people, nothing more. Yet Sean even lied about that much.

Yes, they're just rare. More common around blue stars and toward the centre of the galaxy, supposedly.
>>
Is there another way to get a better multitool than just finding a weapon rack at a place and buying it?
>>
>>151889702
nope ;^)
better hope you don't get shitty luck and play 20 hours with the starter multitool

>>151882548
they didn't lose shit except the time and money to get set up in a new office and some new equipment. you don't think they had their code backed up off site?
it also implies that this game was a couple months away from not being shit

Has anyone found Harambe yet?

What's the odds of the game having cute easter eggs like finding Earth?
>>
>>151889702

ive had several random npc interactions where if you choose the right option they give you a multitool

also at the every space anomoly thing where the 2 story NPCs are there is a cylinder thing on the right that opens up with a free one
