I need advice, what, in your opinion, is the right amount of gameplay for a VN? Enough to foster character ineraction while not bogging it down. I'm thinking Sengoku Rance as a good example with its turn based combat. Va-11 Hall-A was gameplay light, but still had it. Rewrite was extremely gameplay light but had game elements throughout.

What is a good balance?

Yes, I can see that. I personally was thinking something higher stakes. You are a medical student, I was thinking of forcing you to attend to the wounds of terrorists back from missions. Your interactions change if/when they are injured, and how severely (along with a bit of resource management). You are able to recruit people into the organization through the game, both generic and unique story based folks. Their death means their story arcs end there, unfinished.

Also, principally one has to never force a death, a perfect game has no deaths.

It's cyberpunk, the terrorists are the good guys when compared to megacorps. I will admit I am not the best writer, but I have been doing it for years, I think I will be able to pull off some level of base competency.

Honest Va-11 Hall-A doesn't actually delve into terrorism or transhumanism as themes, merely sliding along the surface in order to deliver waifus. The themes they touch on are of oppressive police states and media control. Which I do like as themes, but do not want to tackle here.

It's the coffee shop that link them together, being a service clerk. I want to take it out, but also very much do not. I am unsure what to do.

People who don't understand game development at all are tired of seeing it crop up in indie games. They think most people who make games with pixel art are trying to cash in on nostalgia, when in reality a lot of independent developers use it because it is relatively easy compared to other ways of doing graphics, and when you're independent, especially if you're the full blown 1MA, you can't really afford to spend a ton of time doing graphics.

In Game Maker, how can I attach an object to my player object? I want to give the player two small orbs floating on its site which he can shoot with, kinda like the options from Gradius or R-Type.

I know how to attach such options to a boss creature, but not how to do it on the player. On the boss creature there is a piece of code with "b_radius", which refers to the radus of the boss, but I don't know what to write there for the player object instead.

assuming you're referring to the more recent indie pixels and not the ones during the NES/SNES/Genesis era, I think that's because the good pixel creators during the NES/SNES/Genesis era already had a strong/professional-level foundation in art outside of pixels.

Nowadays, anyone can make their own game at a significantly lower budget, but that also means there are a lot of amateurs/crap out there... There's still great pixel artists out there though, like the guy working on the game Jack the Reaper, in pic-related.

In the end, art is still art: pixel art is just another medium of it, but skill in any art (or music) is shown through experience.

Thanks. It's not entirely RNG at least, as you can control what effect happens somewhat through the use of different equipable items. You can add as many effects as you want this way, but the actual percentage chance of the effect happening adjusts so that the total chance of an effect taking place is always less than or equal to 100%.

Well when I started, there were two reasons. I'm an advanced C++ user and Unreal is relevant to potential jobs I may be interested in in the future.

Now though, I'm pretty glad I chose it. The engine being open-source, alone, has been reason enough to convince me that I'd rather use Unreal. The material and particle editors are great. Blueprints makes things like animation and AI trivial. There are all sorts of post-process effects bundled in that you can turn on/off with a simple checkbox.

Changing resolutions in Unreal can be 1 line, but to have it proper in a settings menu like this requires saving/loading from a file, getting a list of acceptable resolutions, building the UI, etc. Unreal does have a bad UI API, which is unfortunate, though.

I'm guessing you're using that bottom space as a text buffer? You can just slap text over the game screen. The bottom is generally just floor anyhow, and doesn't hold important game-info that would be annoying to be covered.

Well, if you are an advanced c++ user then it is understandable, i assumed you were doing it all in blueprints. Also while UE4 has great tools, you don't need them if you don't use them, and you could easily have the same graphics, post-processing, animation and Ai in Unity from what i have seen so far, but if those features become important and you use more complexity later on, i can see why you did choose it in the end.

And yeah, the UI in UE4 is one of the huge problems. And well, i rather use c# than c++ for prototyping since you don't need to compile all the time and is more comfy, blueprints are a damn horror, to each his own though.

Day 27 of trying to make video games

I'm almost done with this fucking rough animation, but I've hit a roadblock; I need the animation to return to a neutral position so part of it can loop for continuous use, but the video I'm referencing doesn't do that (obviously). So I keep trying to get an end bit here that looks halfway decent, making something somehow terribly unnatural looking, and erasing it and starting over at the end of the frames that I was directly referencing.

Mostly it's the cloth that's giving me trouble

This animation is probably not worth the problems I've had with it, but I -am- learning, so it's not all bad. If I don't get called into work early tomorrow, I hope to get the fucking rough finished already and get some work done on the final animation. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels at the moment.

After that's done, do a jump animation, then shift gears and work on putting it in the actual game--probably with drag-and-drop for now, still, as my coding lessons are going slowly, but I want to get this stuff in the game to remind myself what it's for, if that makes sense.

Wooo, quality settings. They might not actually be needed, but it was a good learning experience. 4.12 has a foliage density slider but I'm in 4.11 still so unfortunately I can't take advantage of it.

I think this is probably where I'll stop on the menu stuff for now. I'll add in volume sliders when I actually add more sound effects and stuff. There's a some stuff that I could do but I won't for the demo, like number of quicksave/autosave slots (hardcoded to 3 now).

No, it seems that the original sprite was 64 tall, and halving it causes it to scale such that the highlighted rows were sometimes not represented very well. Solution is probably to design the gui in adobe and export the exact sizes needed rather than try and rescale inside the engine

Made it so you can equip the same weapons on different hardpoints which increases your total ammo count.
Though for balancing I've limited weapons to only fire a certain number of projectile at a time so you can't spam things just by equipping it on all the hardpoints.

.NET languages in Visual Studios (which is what I assume you're using) use JIT compilation in debug mode and if you have a breakpoint before the error occurs it'll be able to reach that breakpoint no problem.

Are you doing everything in the proper order? Are you actually making the right calls to glShaderSource, and glCompileShader after using glCreateShader? Does your shader have erroneous code in it? You should provide the full block of code so people can actually see what you're fucking doing and point out your stupid mistake.

It could be fucking anything with the information you're giving us, you could be writing shitty shader code since you clearly aren't experienced with OpenGL, you could be making the wrong calls to OpenGL because you clearly aren't even remotely experienced with OpenGL.
