How do I get good at SMN in long-ish fights?
I'm only 224 right now, but I'm struggling to put up even remotely decent numbers in fights longer than 6 minutes. I'm averaging around 1.3-1.4k, which is really disappointing considering around the same ilvl on MNK I can average around 300 dps more.

What I mean is I like paladin's support abilities like clemency, stoneskin, divine veil, and cover. And how sheltron is a more active defense than most cooldowns since you have to time it for ONE hit instead of just hitting it within 10-20 seconds of the buster.

My only gripe is thinking about how the DF was putrid shit, and I guess it still is, so I don't want to deal with the many asshat elitists that it groups you with.

Is the story released in the patches worth enduring the DF?

You should unlock all the story-required dungeons anyways, it has some good catch-up gear here and there and you probably want access to NidEX which are basically the highest ilvl catch up weapon that don't require a huge time investment.

You should just DRG it through the story, it's more fun when you're a DRG I like to think, but really it depends what you wanna play at 60.
