nth for HUD design still being a pain in the ass.

I need to figure out what I'm gonna do with those three skinny red things on the far right of the bar, I'm trying to make a nice visual indicator to show the player how many rows of bullets they have left.

So I'm gonna either turn them into pistons that raise up when you have a stock, or make them tube lights like I attempted here.

Bottom price office computers are capable of running Hearthstone smoothly. Bottom tier smartphones and tablets can run Hearthstone smoothly. You don't need a gaming rig to play most PC games now, but a toaster from 2007 is a toaster, plain and simple.

If your computer is so old that it can't handle video streaming and games from 2010 just stay out of PC gaming. There are plenty of 3rd world hobbies for human garbage.
>>
would an xcom clone with hexagons be superior to rectangles?

Hexagons are superior to rectangles, but I actually think xcom is an example of a game where it doesn't really matter.

Hexagons are superior but a bit harder to work with. Still imho it doesn't matter in xcom games that much. I don't know about a xcom type game with a hex grid so you might have some novelty if you go that route. So if you're a noob go with squares otherwise try hexagons.

Someone want to come up with the topology/heightmap of a 12x12 tile forest stage? It's for a TRPG. Humanoids are about 3 units tall and trees can be marked with "T". Something like this would work:

001223322211
00122222T211
111122122211
etc

A char's movement range is generally 5 tiles or less. Jump is around 4. Curious to see what others come up with.

Well in my opinion the problem isn't that you can't run it, it's that it eats up too much resources for what it is. It's just a card game not a 3d action game. Granted, I don't have a gaming computer but it's a pretty solid build for my needs and I don't know about you but I like to play games like that when I take a break from work without having to turn everything off, and when I have a browser and photoshop with a project open I'm having problems with running it smoothly and that's why I stopped playing that game.

So I have a legitimate question about art.

I want to draw anime styled. I can draw decently using traditional means, but I have no idea how to translate that into digital means properly.

Specifically (using CS6 with a tablet by the way), no matter what brush I use, the result always ends up looking blurry. When I look at other peoples' work, it always looks nice and crisp.

How do I achieve a clean look? Is it in the software or am I clearly doing something wrong? I don't have any examples because I never save my blurry shit.

Where do the magic users in your game world draw energy from?
If it's boring old arcane magic then "mana" or "magicka" will do
If your magic users are warlocks then "fel energy" or "runic power" might be more appropriate
If it's druid hippy pinko communist nature magic then call it "totemic energy" or "flower power" or some shit, I don't know I hate druids
If it's grimdark 40k shit then "blood" or "anguish" or something like that will fit the theme

If you want to continue using Photoshop, do this: >>151685937. These are brush settings I use to get a little "crispiness" with lines. Also I forgot where, but you can crank up the hardness all the way.

And draw on a really large canvas. most of the artists you're thinking about use huge canvases, like 3000x3000 at 300 dpi. That way, when they resize everything tends to look cleaner. At close range, most of their pictures have lots of tiny imperfections.

its legal to use ambient recorded sounds if the creator gave you permission. it would be incredibly difficult to identify the exact waveform of something this long of something like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdIJ2x3nxzQ

for example, but if that's your concern you can always ask the uploader. you can risk a download if you want but they usually allow it as that's kind of why they do it anyway. they may expect to be at least credited.

i tend not to finish most of what i do but if you find anything here appropriate for your games atmosphere you can use it for free. if not i understand, solo piano is not a highly sought game backing soundtrack.

An open world exploration fantasy meets age of sail game that takes place on a great ocean with no major landmasses, only islands, which are procedurally generated with different biomes and sizes and geography. Players create boats to travel across the ocean and can destroy or board other players boats, upgrade their boat with better cannons or get better swords and tools for themselves, or claim an island and modify the terrain to build structures on it or dig out caverns. Different areas of the sea have different environments, like volcanic islands or freezing waters filled with icebergs or great vortexes or impossible features like lines of waterfalls onto a lower ocean. Both the islands and waters are filled with procedurally generated flora and fauna. Some players will become pirates that raid islands or intercept boats to acquire resources, others will build fortresses and labryinths, some will team up or go alone, or just explore the near infinite number of unexplored areas.

so in my single-player card game, things work like normal competitive games where you get new cards every turn.
Since you can choose when you want to aggro the enemies, though, this leads to a degenerate loop where you can just spam end-turn until you get the cards you want before engaging.

In other words, players have to "pay for" card draw using something other than time, since time is an infinite resource. That, or make time a non-infinite resource somehow. Any ideas, /blog/?

>running out of cards is punished
This would make deck size into its own clock, which I might be okay with.

How about, to refill your deck from your discard the way it happens now, you have to burn a card from hand, and when you try to draw but there aren't any cards left, you lose.

This breaks thin deck strategies, but it does force players to keep filling their deck with new cards even if they've found something that works

I suppose I need to explain some stuff.

I use placeholder assets while doing the programming. The enemy and the level assets are from the asset store, but the player 3d model is my design. Also, the paper bag on top of the enemy is something I made up.

I'm not tackling GUI art yet but I still need to display health and stamina while playtesting so that's why the UI is like that.

Using placeholders is a common trick in gamedev to playtest and get the feel of things while the art isn't done yet.

So recently i am thinking about making a really simple monster turn based fighting game, i got my ideafagging all down except one major thing, 1v1 like in pokemon or multiple vs multiple monsters?

Multiple vs Multiple would have more complex and challenging fights, but might be shorter in length and therefore the game would have shorter gameplay in general, and considering i want to sell this game, it could even be too complex for all those normalfag cucks.

One vs One is less complex, beginner friendly, makes the fights artificially longer and also gives more attention to individual monsters, but at the same time i know it will be heavily compared to pokemon if i do that, and people who like complex battles might also ignore the game. I also thought about just adding both 1v1 and MvM but this is even more Pokemon like.

I want to have a battle system that turn based players are familiar with, not too complex and also something which will not be too heavily compared to pokemon/digimon, or at least not called outright copied. Anyone got an idea?
>>
>>151699753
>placeholders
Just don't. This only placates the asset hunter mentality.
>>
>>151700203
You better make your own ground textures or there will be hell to pay.
>>
>>151700487
I don't think it's possible to avoid being compared to pokemon if your game involves acquiring and battling monsters. Even if it wasn't turn based people would mention it.

That said, multiples can turn into boring focus-one-focus-two-focus-three, or using nothing but AoE, so I'd go with 1v1.
>>

Making sprites isn't gamedev, it's art
Using those sprites is gamedev.

I personally think, if the art was adapted to fit the rest of the game, then it's fine. Like >>151701005 said.

I say adapted as in, you open up the texture in Photoshop perhaps to tweak the colors, or maybe do it kit bash style where you overlay several textures on top of each other, regardless if you're mixing textures you got online with textures you made yourself.

Same goes for 3d models and sounds.

Nothing is fine when autism gets involved.
Yanderedev has custom skins for his MC but the MC herself is still a Unity store asset. This means that autists will forever shriek about his game using Unity store assets, no matter what. The MC is a perfect model and fits the theme of his game and the game world perfectly but asset hunters are autists by nature, they don't care.

The thing is though autistic purists make up maybe 0.5% of the playerbase, so it will never matter. If Yanderedev set about making his own MC from scratch, it would appease exactly 0.5% of his audience, making it pointless.

Why was Q2 so good?

Q3A was alright but multiplayer only obviously. Enemy Territory was also amazing as far as multiplayer goes. Every FPS after ET is shit. Halo 1 is an exception, but as soon as multiplayer became the focus in the sequel it was garbage. If you disagree, you are wrong.

There were rumors that the next Quake game would be going from Strogg back to Cthulu-esque Q1 environment. I was hopeful until that last Doom game which I admit I didn't play but it did not make me hopeful that id software games will ever be a thing again.

I'm working on some classes to help me do some shit for my 2D game

The basic idea is that I want to create a function that does
>GetAllEntitiesWithinDistance(Entity current, float distance)
and it will give me back all the entities that are within the given distance of the provided entity.

Question is:
How many entities would you expect to exist at a time, that you would want to be able to get the distance to?
How many calls per update would you expect out of a method like this?

Currently, my test results are
>5000 entities, 100 calls in an update, average number of entities returned 19, total time for all calls 1.15 milliseconds
>5000 entities, 100 calls in an update, average number of entities returned 376, total time for all calls 2.0 milliseconds
>5000 entities, 100 calls in an update, average number of entities returned 683, total time for all calls 2.82 milliseconds
>5000 entities, 100 calls in an update, average number of entities returned 3869, total time for all calls 11.5 milliseconds
and
>50000 entities, 100 calls in an update, average number of entities returned 419, total time for all calls 16.4 milliseconds

How does this sound to you? Note that all 5000 of those elements can be moving anyway they want. None of them are static.
Adding static elements would decrease the time since a sort is used on the collection first.

I've wasted like an hour trying to figure out this stupid problem. My sensitivity when I launch the game in a new window is fine, but when I switch to play-in-editor it's all fucked up. I have no idea how or when it started happening.

First half of video shows standalone game, second half shows play-in-editor. Mouse moved the same distance in both clips. May have to go to Unreal Answers for this one.

removing negative effects only partially removes runs where you get randomly fucked over.
it does nothing to prevent runs where you randomly win without even trying.

True or not, your dream game is probably unrealistically huge scope and you will never fucking finish it. Finishing something is good for you. Nope, that's a "complete" ammo bar, having the clip recede up is a pretty neat idea. If I put the extra clips on the bottom, that'll give me room to put a full set of ten bullets per row, which would make things easier to manage mentally.

There is gonna be another meter under the ammo meter, as seen here on the right.

So when I'm finished here, there'll be the gem meter, the bullet counter, and then a subweapon box on the right.

If the pachinko takes no skill, why bother stopping them from playing endlessly until they get every prize?
Also, why make it a video game?
If it does require some practice, a simple game over or making you lose the pieces you already earned would make sense.
Maybe make the most "important" piece require that you have all the others on that run?

I have set up a cluster of servers across the world which gather entropy from electromagnetic background radiation.
I've also created a custom network protocol so that my games can receive true random data from these servers via the internet.
No data is reused twice so i keep querying the servers for more data whenever needed.

>>151728403
technically it is possible to 100% exactly predict the bounces.
you forget though that when people reach the limit of their abilities, they start employing rng. i.e, they guess.

let me provide you with a simple example to illustrate what i mean. within the next 5 seconds, you're gonna hear a noise. if you manage to consciously react to this noise within 0.01 seconds, i'll give you a reward.
this would be an impossible task because the average human reflex is much slower. however, if you just take a guess and within the next 5 seconds act as though you heard the noise, you might be get a reward.

how does that related to peggle? as you said, realistically, it's impossible to 100% predict the bounces thus you're forced to guess. which means that peggle is an rng game.

"bad random" for most cases would be non-uniform, which rand()%mod is.

>But dont think that creating art assets isnt gamedev.

If you don't have any of the skills required to actually put those assets into a game, then you're not doing gamedev, you're wanking yourself off and you belong on deviantart.

>Its time consuming and laborious. Its hard a s fuck because unlike code, mistakes are glaringly obvious and you can't hide sloppiness.

You can't hide mistakes in code either, you can't fool a computer into thinking your code should work when it shouldn't. You have to be correct. Its also possible to build an entire application and end up painting yourself into a corner and becoming trapped by an unweildy framework that you've created, and have to tear everything down and start again. Because nobody truly understands the thing they're building until they've finished.

Art is fine, but if all you're doign is art then its not gamedev. It doesn't matter if your art looks like it could be used in a game, it still just art.

Do you have any idea how hard it is for a computer to come up with a truly random number? It basically can't.

A computer is a completely deterministic machine. Low-quality random number generators that come packaged with a lot of languages and frameworks have to resort to using the nanoseconds in the current system time as the seed for their random numbers. Some might try to mix it up and throw the current CPU temperature in there too. But these things are still deterministic.

So if you generate a shitload of low-quality random numbers and graph them, you will probably get an uneven distribution of results. A truly random number set should give you an even distribution when a large number of them are graphed.

What is the best way to make a 2d game?

I tried that one engine for C++, but I found it so fucking barebones it hurt. I forget it's name now, I got as far as loading a spritesheet successfully and making the 2d array for the level before giving up. Read a few books that jumped from variables to masterwork OOP within three pages.

What is a barebones engine, that will still allow me to learn programming as I go, that had good documentation/books avaliable that isn't Unity or Gamemaker or some shit like that.

Thanks.

>A truly random number set should give you an even distribution when a large number of them are graphed.
No it won't.
A truly random number set could be just all the same number, because its random.

The best RNG is based on deterministic sets. A deterministic set of all possible options are generated. RNGesus picks one option from that set. That option is deleted from the list. When the set reaches zero, a new set is generated. One can make this more elaborate when desired. This ensures that distribution is always equal. If you want one option to appear twice as much, you just enter two indentical options into the list.

--------
Then there is the Mean Time To Happen style. RNGesus itself is irrelevant. There is a modifier MTTH(Mean Time To Happen). This dictates, how often minimally that outcome should emerge. A bigger MTTH makes it happen rarely and a lower MTTH makes it happen frequently. One MTTH equals one tick. With each tick ---> MTTH = MTTH - 1. This quarantees that even rare events happen eventually.

you're entitled to your opinion. objectively however, i am right. the circumstances under which the outcome of a somersault are 100% predictable are

a) not attempting a somersault
b) physical impossibility
c) deliberate failure

given that the actor has successfully performed a somersault prior, the outcomes of genuine future attempts become more predictable over time however, the success rate of predicting such attempts never reaches 100%. if you agree with this, you'll be forced to agree with

>the circumstances leading to the failure of your somersault were completely out of your control

you're either a,b,c or you didn't know that you were gonna fail.

>>151729914
you can try and argue semantics but it'll just make you look stupid. if a game has no explicitly built-in rng but forces the player to guess, it's an rng game. whether the rng comes from the player himself or the game is completely irrelevant. if you think the source of rng is relevant, good for you.

Sub-beginner here. How does something like Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi make the jump attack work?

The way I figure it might work is that you take Mario's position, you take the position of the top of the enemy's hitbox, and the point in middle of the two as the high point of the jump, then make Mario travel between those 3 points. But that's a triangle, not an arc, and it feels like I'm probably missing something important about the whole thing.

Either the manga author didn't do their research or they did and suddenly everything about why japanese gamedev is struggling started making sense - the girl was hired based on her drawing skill alone, with no 3D modelling experience whatsoever, and was expected to learn everything on the job.

Wouldn't that explain so much if Japanese companies really hired like this?

Turn Kirby into a girl with a white dress and skimpy underwear. Instead of sucking air she flashes the enemy and attracts them to her that way. If they have a power, she gains it and wears an equally flashy outfit themed around that power. If they don't have a power, she doesn't get an outfit and temporarily goes nude.

You can play animations from script with legacy functions, like animation.Play("name of clip"). You might have to mark the animations as "Legacy" though.
