Most fun classes are locked from the beginning, and constantly having to restart picking from the default 3 classes is just no fun, don't do that to yourself.
Also TOME4 is Diablo: The Roguelike, and should be treated as such.

Literally over half of the content of the game is locked away, and almost all of the classes that are unique ONLY to tome4. Some people don't like cheevo hunting, or having to make a specific character JUST to unlock something. Some stuff is literally RNG, like unlocking the undead races by killing the master (which is a task in and of itself). Nobody wants to play the starting classes and races over and over just to get to the good stuff, especially when those starting classes aren't all that interesting.

Alright, i've been playing this on and off for a while now, and i have to say that Zin is pretty fun if you can rush invo. Incredible panic buttons and a great buff/AoE damage ability.

I agree. The beginning parts of the game are pretty dull, and the dungeon generation could really use some work. But I think the core gameplay is pretty cool and unique. I'm just about to enter Daikara, so shit is about to start picking up. Have you tried the orc campaign? It actually cuts down on a ton of tedium that the main quest has.

I like unlocking things, and it's a completely reasonable design decision to lock more complex classes like timefags behind achievements so that new players are more prepared for it.

The only locks I have a problem with are the skill categories. The fire magic category is especially bad because it's a simple, obvious spell school that's locked behind the mother of all grinding achievements.

Seconding this.

ToME's ability interactions are pretty neat. A lot of them boil down to "AoE damage with a different skinned manabar", or "elemental damage beam with a status effect", but some of them manage to be pretty unique by roguelike standards.

That class that splits the timeline? Pretty interesting. That blackhole ability that drags everything to its center? You don't see that done often in this genre.

Honestly, i feel that DCSS turns are longer than most other RL/TTRPG turns. While most other games treat a turn as about 6 seconds, DCSS starts making a lot more sense if you treat an AUT as six seconds instead of a full turn

I don't really remember what the starters are, but I think you get bulwarks, berserks, archers and alchemists, along with the elves, halfings, humans and dwarves. They're all pretty good. Its just that those classes are pretty dull, and you'll probably splat a lot with them without unlocking stuff.

You can still die with the savestates. The game still ends with your save being deleted and you starting all over. I don't see DCSS using paradox as a resource, where lower paradox means safer spells but higher paradox means the time line gets fucked and wacky shit starts happening. You can definitely change seasons to realistic lengths. Most of the seasoned players on the forums do, or at least they used to back when I played that game.

The sprites are randomized. Bypassing things with nethack style identification doesn't work in DCSS, for the most part. There are a couple of exceptions like certain scrolls and potions having a higher chance to spawn on early floors, but even that is often a crapshoot that ends with you quaffing degen or something.

Edit your rcfile to force_more_message when dangerous things are happening. MarvinPA's rcfile is one that a lot of people use.

Go there and ctrl+f 'more' to see some examples of things that greatplayers consider important enough to pause the game when they happen.

Edit your rcfile to increase your hp_warning to something like 60% or 65%.

Once you've done those things, just play slowly and pay attention whenever a situation looks even a little bit dangerous.

At first, you might rely on the HP warning to tell you "hey, this is bad, I should use an escape scroll or potion." Later, you'll eventually git gud enough that you can recognize dangerous situations before they become deadly, and when that happens you'll also realize that you can simply walk away from most threats, as long as you recognize them as threats while they're still at the edge of your view distance.

He's speed 10 but has a 3d25 lightning bolt and a 3d29 cold bolt that ignores EV and freezes, but his melee game is ridicolous. Hits just slightly less than a juggernaut, but the +7 pain lajatang gave him just too much damage output. Well that AC really went a long way, even Komodo Dragons and Elephants couldn't do shit since they're so easily kiteable.
This is my current skill spread, I clearly overtrained Spellcasting but the mana makes it a bit more fun to play a MASTERBLASTER.
Also that armor training is useless for a Gargoyle.
I found a nice Great Mace but I don't really want to do that since then I can't use a shield with it and hungerless casting with a staff of energy is fun since I have access to Iron Shot and LCS.
So as you can see I'm not going for the optimal route but what I find the most fun.
I've played since 0.10 or something like that and have won some, died thousands and thousands of times and it's mostly just about killing uniques I often have a hard time with with 1-2 LCS.

Actual DCSS dev discussion takes place on their mailing list, in ##crawl-dev, and (to a lesser extent?) on their doku wiki.

The GDD subforum on the tavern mostly exists as a containment board, with the exception of PleasingFungus who seems to have been actively browsing it for simple quality-of-life changes to implement lately.

Sweeping mechanics changes don't ever EVER come from GDD, those seem to be exclusively mailing list and -dev things.

There's also the fact that there are way too many items in the game for a 52 inventory limit to be playable. Capping inventory at 52 with the current array of potions, scrolls, wands, evokables, miscellaneous items, needles, pointlessly differentiated food, etc., leaves the game in this poorly thought out limbo halfway between making inventory space !!important!! and making it completely irrelevant. You end up just dropping stuff and keeping your consumables, maybe some evokables, but the inventory limit isn't small enough for the choices to matter. Basically, the inventory limit should either be much smaller, or infinite. It's neither right now, and it's in a terrible design space because of it.

Rings of teleport are a really hard item to balance. When you could evoke them, they were A++ certified busted. Rings of +ctele were also A++ certified busted. I guess they just wanted another bad ring to make you wary, but it doesn't really fit all that well with current crawl. They should just cut the bad shit and go full tome4 with only positive stuff, but make the choices matter.

Inventory space is completely fine, you just have to actively manage your autolooter and drop stuff you're not going to use.

It physically hurts me to watch someone repeatedly autoexplore into a wand of flame when they could literally just turn off "pickup shit wands". Such is life when parts of the game are automated. Think I'll just name it King Cobra's Bite (subject to change). It's basically like Glaciate since it'll come from you and the range is somewhat Tornado-tier but a little less (4x4 or 5x5 worth of tiles or somewhere near it, maybe think of a unique shape to make it a special snowflake). It doesn't leave a poison cloud, the damage and status infliction (megapoison) are instant.

It brings about higher tier of poison which drains far more hp per aut than regular poison but lasts far less time. So in order to benefit from it, you need to continuously cast it a lot of times, be constantly near your target/s and try to survive (since casters are usually squishy) and constantly watch your manapool. It loses in range and utility compared to the standard lvl 9 spells but it wins in damage per aut and rewards risk due to the need of recasting (wasting 0.7/1 aut standing your ground to recast) and staying near your targets in general.

I don't have any idea how much instant base damage it should have since it doesn't leave a cloud and shit but has megapoison.

Except in Crawl you can't just turn off "pickup shit wands" at the beginning of the game and not touch it again.

You have to autoexplore until you find a wand, look at which wand it was when it gets picked up, and then once you see which wand it is you can turn autopick off or not for that specific subwand depending on how far in the game you are. You have to do this for. every. wand.

Maybe there's some way to use Lua rcmagic to automate this tedium out (it's not immediately clear to me that there's a good way to automate this, I don't think that even elliptic's autopicker has the level of granularity necessary to automatically adapt which items it's picking based on dungeon depth), but if there is it should be a default setting, rather than the default for basically every item in the game being "You have to either turn this off in your rc, or adaptively turn this off on the fly as your inventory fills with more-useful things or you pass the depth where it stops doing work."

The point is that the game is constantly annoying the player with small decisions that aren't important.

Your inventory becomes so cluttered during the course of a standard game of Crawl that you are constantly filtering out dross *while the inventory limit remains large enough that none of your drops matter in the slightest because you still have enough space for every consumable under the sun*.

The point is that if you are going to throw constant filtering decisions at the player, they should be meaningful. Otherwise, it's just requisite interaction spam that detracts from the fun parts of the game.

That doesn't solve the problem, it just gives additional burden of manually picking.

At some point or another in a standard DCSS game, it's a good idea to pick up (unidentified): jewellery, wands, potions, scrolls, permafood, best available of rocks/tomahawks/javelins/large rocks, ego armour, aux slot armour, randart armour, >= base type trained skill ego weapons, >= base type trained skill randart weapons, any of the few specific fixedart weapons that are always good, staves if you don't have !resistance or an rElec swap available yet or if you want an enhancer, curare, a blowgun to go with your curare, nets, most of the new evocables (at least sack of spiders and box of beasts), rods if it's early enough or if you're training evo, manuals to check skill, and books (only temporarily) to learn any spell you want to skill for.

This stuff trivially passes the 52 item limit, usually reaching that point of constant pickup and drop by sometime around lair.

Most of it that isn't potions, scrolls, or the big five wands eventually becomes less useful, but basically all of it has enough purpose when you first find it that you want to at least pick it up and identify it before dropping it if it's the least useful piece of junk in your golfbag.

It's terrible design.

That name reminds me of a Hunger cleric domain spell from D&D 3,5 called "Bite of the King" so how about something like this:
1) single target spell, also puts a status effect on you
2) your character's tile gets modified: your head vanishes and turns into a serpentine maw
3) the snake head can extend to several tiles, kinda like tentacled starspawn
4) once it reaches the target, it devours it, no initial save, just like slimify
5) lasts around 5-6 turns, each turn while target is inside you it is dealt split acid and poison damage
6) obviously, once it's devoured, you are either rooted in place or have your movement speed significantly reduced
7) target can attempt a save based on something, I really have no idea to escape, if it escapes your belly dimension, it is dealt half the remaining DOT

You basically keep UnID pots/scrolls, one (1) stack of permafood and 1 (1) stack of permafood that can be eaten in a single turn, MAYBE a throwing item IE nets if you have them or javs if you don't, whatever you happen to be wearing/wielding, maybe a weapon swap, jewelry swaps (like 2-3 rings tops), some evokers, some wands, maybe a book or two. The rest is completely subjective and are basically flex slots. You simply want to carry too much. I typically head into postend with a very full inventory, but almost always have 2-3 slots open. I agree that the inventory can get cluttered, but you're basically always accumulating useful shit. There is a limit to how much you can take.

Wouldn't even be surprised. Almost all dungeon crawl shit soup removals and nerfs happen because the devs see someone do something once and get insanely butthurt about someone transgressing on their great vision.

Nemelex got dogshitted because the devs were butthurt about his abilities and cards, several times. Makhleb was flushed down the toilet because he would've been too strong with Deep Donusteel Dwarves that were added in the same patch. Vehumet was turned into Dontemet because he was strong and gave casters good spells, and you can't have that in Tab Crawl Muh Resource Management Soup.

Fulsome Distillation was removed because they thought the clouds were "too strong".

A lot of spells have gotten some retarded limitations where they can't do anything outside your line of sight because muh scum. A lot of spells have gotten removed because they had utility and you can't have that in elegant tactical interesting game design (tm).

Even the MD removal happened during a time they were the most popular tabber race.

Happened upon 'this' thread a few days ago and started playing crawl, and roguelikes in general, for the first time. So much fun, but so much sad.

My ignorance usually gets me killed: Today I learned that Unseen Horrors are a thing. I finally managed to get a spellcaster to dungeon level 8, had double rings of mp+9 so I could spam spells without worry. Doing my thing against stuff and I get chunked. Try to back off and lightning bolt the air and get chunked again. That didn't work, confused, wat do, imgonnadie. Scroll of tele my ass out of here. Straight into a gaggle of mobs, barely get away by escaping down a level into more stuff plus an orc priest who finishes me off. Research tells me I could have used a scroll of fog to get my bearings on it to hit it.

Are there any other weird deadly monsters in these early/mid levels that I should watch out for?

DDA seems to have a lot of russians, I'm pretty sure they have a translation though I don't know how you get it to work.

The first option on the second option tab is language, you should be able to change it to english from there.

Thanks DCSS devs! Summons are still okay, but a lot of the times trying to move out of the way so they can run forward takes the target out of LOS so theres no way to command them to attack. Zombies are entirely fucking useless though, the only time they're useful is with kikus ability.

FeCj, kite for days. Don't ever go melee and take care to not run into something faster than you when low on mana. Just Fulminant Prism will kill most things without high AC you're able to outrun (which is a lot). Later you can get Orb of Destruction, and since Prism forces you to train Hexes anyway, get some of those too for mid and late game (death cobs!)

How 2 magic in DCSS? I can consistently clear vault 4/2 runes/elf with pretty much anything melee (except transmuter), but I can't get past D:3 no matter how hard I try as a spellcaster. I grab the first weapon I find to tab after I'm out of mana but my spells don't hit (miscast or otherwise) something like 75% of the time until XL ~5 or so (then it's more like 33% - despite the 4% rate in the info screen), and I always stumble upon a room with like 2 uniques and 3 ghosts all at once which I have no chance to run from (they're too fast and have ranged attacks, and of course I don't have any escapes this early).

Try ice elementalist. Any race. It's pretty simple. You see a mob, you come close and press z a until mob dies. Rince, repeat. You get nice AC boost from a spell, a nice summoning spell, and throw icicle is the same as freeze - press two buttons until everything dies, but it can carry you through the game.
Also you probably tried wizard? Magic dart always hits, it's just so weak that mobs with any AC have a good chance to nullify it's effect. Wizards should rely on conjure flame and that confusing cloud until they get something better.

I don't get it, what can fair against freeze at d:3? It never misses and does good damage against everything that's not ice resistant. Slows adders and iguanas as a good bonus. Maybe uniques? But even early uniques, as long as you fight them one on one and they don't confuse you, die under freeze very quickly.

Freeze didn't get any nerfs or buffs in a long time. I've just checked. With ViIE i got to level 4 by pressing nothing but o and z a, with one exception. Kobolds and goblins and stuff die in 1-2 freezes, bats in 1, adders in 3-4. The exception was gnolls, whom i had to ladder scam, like always.

Like I said, you have to get survival skills up. Examine underbrush, you might find food or other useful items (like a can to boil water in) and it trains survival. There's a stone knife available without any skill, though finding the string or equivalent may take some time. Starting at level 2 you can make a firestarter.

I checked again, as DEIE: ooze takes 5, kobold takes 2-3, bats take 2-3 (never 1), slugs 4, adders 1-2, hobgoblins 1-2, jackals 2-3, gnolls 4-5. A lone gnoll was able to two-shot me from full health though; there would be no way to ice proj them due to the mana cost and no way to survive in melee for freeze given the number of applications required and the fact that they often have spears without good rolls (at least as DE).

I mean like it should not be mostly RNG like in literally every roguelike ever. The weight should be on a combination of player skill and abilities you get while leveling, with some rng that can be prevented from fucking you over by using the abilities correctly.

The abilities could be a generic stealth stat that works on rng that works better when near walls and in darker areas and when standing still and stuff, passives based on conditions and active abilities with cooldowns and/or conditions on when they can be used. You could pick the abilities you want with skill points or something so there would be a character building element too.

Few examples I could come up with
>you can get xp from finding loot and stealing shit and finding secret passages and stuff, but also kills so you can choose if you want to be more assassin or thief
>enemies that moved away from you have a considerably harder time noticing you because they're facing away
>level of light in the tile you're in affects stealth level
>an ability make all enemies lose aggro and forget where you are, if you use it when nothing has direct LoS on you
>an ability that guarantees enemies can't notice you for a set number of turns on their own as long as you don't attack or do anything loud

Did they ever buff the lightning mage tree? I've always loved the idea of playing one, but they were really underpowered last time I checked and Im already not that good at the game.

I grew up playing text adventure games on my old CPC464 tape deck, MUDs are essentially text games as an MMO, persistent worlds played with other players. Mostly they seem to be Forgotten Worlds style RPG games but i'm pretty sure most genres of game can be found in them.
