Around here I usually keep an eye out for one with a weak starting pokemon. The key is to use a lower CP pokemon than the defender, which generally nets you 500-600 prestige. In comparison, wiping the gym with a strong pokemon might only be a couple hundred.

It's a good use for your mountain of pidgeottos and golbats and stuff, just send them in to die instead of wasting potions.

Remember that you can just run after the first fight too, do that and you should be able to take a gym from 3-4 in like 3 minutes easy.

I've been having fun in the last few days by planning my gym attacks.

I find 4 to 6 gyms I can work with in a row, then I'll hit each one in turn to below 2k prestige and move on. It's much harder for somebody to raise a gym back up to 3000 prestige from 500, than it is for them to beat your one defender and stick their own in.

Once all my targets are weakened, I take over the first one and insert a defender, cycle to the next and take it over in a minute, then repeat until I have all of them and quickly claim my reward.
