No Man's Sky general. Multiplayer edition.

Out right now for PS4, PC release on Friday the 12th.

>What is this game?
A relaxing procedurally generated space exploration game with some combat and trading.

>What do you do in the game?
From the HG website, http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/

>Is there multiplayer?
LOL
>>
Threadly reminder to make a petition about it and get the redditors riled up enough to sign it

>We, the undersigned, believe that Sean Murray of Hello Games misled consumers, either by lying or otherwise willfully perpetuating misunderstandings about the multiplayer, online capability of No Man's Sky. He is quoted and on the record as stating, multiple times, that players will be able to encounter, compete, and cooperate with each other in the game, which is not possible.

>We believe this amounts to false advertising of the product, as many people purchased the game under the false belief, perpetuated by Murray, that they would be able to play with others, and as such, demand to be refunded the full purchase price.

They're members of the Sony Entertainment brand, surely they can hunt down some netcode, slap it on the back end, and get this up quickly.

The problem is it shouldn't take a fucking outcry the same day the game is released for people to realize you've been FUCKING LYING IN EVERY INTERVIEW FOR TWO YEARS ABOUT HOW COOL IT'LL BE TO SEE ANOTHER PLAYER AND FINALLY SEE WHAT YOUR RACE/SPACE SUIT IS.

1. Implement bases, storage, and furniture. This needs to be done almost immediately. I want to be able to set up base camps on planets, forge for resources, and store extra stuff.
1A. Bases need special atmosphere bubbles, so you cant start farms and bring different animals from different planets there.
2A. This should include plants, let's grow plants from other planets on new planets, or seed dead worlds.
2. Add large freighters, I want to be able to take animals to them and move them from planet to planet.

Those need to be done like, IMMEDIATELY. This game is fucking empty.

No one knows, but considering they had Sony to help them run it on PS4 and it still can't go past 30 FPS despite looking really basic doesn't bode well.
>>
>>151232668
Yeah, I have found a few cool animals I want to bring with me to other planets, and I can't. Same with plants.

I've also seen bipedal humanoids I want to teach things to, but I can't. Why are there no hirelings/mercenaries/companions in this game? No one you can equip items to or add skills to, or get a ship for so they can follow you? Really? Diablo 2 had this 15 years ago.
>>
>mfw I knew going in that it would be shit
>I knew there would be no multiplayer
>I knew there would be nothing to do

Feels good. I can actually enjoy what little this game has to offer, without feeling like I was ripped off. My only disappointment, is that I did not forsee how terrible the inventory mechanics would be.
>>
>>151232705
You should pirate it no matter what because they've given us no fucking clue about how the game runs. If it please you, buy after that, or don't, I'm not your dad.

>>151234403
There's three main bits to the game: combat, exploration, and survival.

The survival mechanics are horribly unfun. Nobody seems to enjoy mineral collection, especially due to a really small inventory size. It mostly consists of scanning and following icons, and is apparently incredibly repetitive and not very rewarding. Combat is also really unsatisfying, with enemies that don't react to getting hit and no real threat outside of space (where the main weapon is a lock-on laser). The exploration is pretty decent, but wears out its welcome fast because there's not much exciting hidden content. The monoliths you find don't give much, alien outposts are not exciting. You can walk around and look at shit, and that's nice, but not 60 dollars nice. Other games have done it before, in any case. Also, people are already reporting recycled content on planets.

Yeah that's kind of what I meant. Like people have been saying this game is boring as shit but at the very least I was wondering if it has the same kind of satisfaction that those loot games have where you just get a little "ting" in your head when you pick up items and get levels. Why the fuck can nobody just make a good, comprehensive space game? I realize that it is a massive undertaking and that all of the futures that we would like to see lead to an extremely time-consuming and expensive development process, but Star Citizen has had both of those and it probably won't even end up being the be-all end-all next gen space game that exceeds all expectations. Why do videogame developers truly hate their customers? I miss when people made games not for money, but because they were passionate about them.

When you find one of those that need a Bypass Coin to use look for a shelter. Some shelters have distress calls for crashed ships and you can take that ship for yourself after you fix it up.

Buy every suit upgrade you find. Keep stacks of elements on your ship and single items on you. When you fill up on single items head to the nearest shop and just unload.

That is fine, nobody wants amazing multiplayer centric modes or special attention given to it. They just want the goal of meeting up with their friends and maybe explore the a few solar systems together, even if that means spending hours warping to the same star system.

But you can't fucking say "It's slim to none" but it can totally happen, that you might just see a ship fly by, and that the only way to even know what your character model looks like is to engage in multiplayer... and then after launch suddenly say "lol there is no multiplayer you are crazy"

I don't follow your logic.

Further, I didn't buy the game to support him/the company that made it, I bought it on the PS4 to enjoy the game on my couch.

They only attack you for harvesting some biological resources. Ore, isotopes, and the general shit you'll be harvesting/mining won't get you attacked.

"Sac venom" from lifeless plants will cause you to be attacked, and resources marked like it. Those are marked with a green '!', though, so they're easy to plan ahead/avoid.

Gold, emeril, platinum, any isotope, any metal from the blue/red/gold/green classes, can be mined without you being attacked.

Can I be FUCKING real for a second?

This community is fucking atrocious right now. You're all acting like a bunch of whiny, entitled little babies.

A tiny team of people made an entire universe for you to explore. They made it for YOU, and they're going to wake up tomorrow morning and see that instead of enjoying it, this community of "fans" picked out the 3 or 4 things that weren't perfect and are using that to fucking riot.

Guess what? The game was never going to be perfect. It was never going to live up to your hype. It was never going to be everything you'd ever want in a game.

What it WAS going to be was an impossibly big universe filled with mysteries and weird shit. I just played it for 2 hours and it was exactly that. What more do you want?

Is it buggy? Sure. Is it repetitive? Maybe. Is the inventory system imperfect and the multiplayer feature questionable and the structure unclear? Sure, fine.

But holy shit what do these people OWE YOU?

How fucking entitled do you have to be to explore an infinite universe in a spaceship and then say "yeah but..."

We should all be fucking weeping in our chairs right now at the sheer size and scale of the achievement. We should be showering the people behind this thing with the praise they deserve for pulling off one of the most inspiring games in recent memory.

Hello Games doesn't owe you the world. Yet they gave you 18 QUINTILLION of them.

If you have the fucking audacity to complain about it then you don't deserve it and you were never fans in the first place.

Hey bro. You need to pay better attention. There have been two separate instances live broadcast where to different pairs of players, independent of eachother, found eachother in the same exact spot and on the same exact planet. So players 1 and 2 didn't see eachother on planet x, and over on planet y, neither did players 3 and 4. No matter what they did. There was some controversy about the first two since one didn't have PSN, but he actually bought a 3 mo. sub, and no luck, there just wasn't any multiplayer of the sort Sean Murray explicitly described in interviews.

TLDR;
Sean Murray = Liar Liar pants on Fire.

He's a friendly face used by Sony to sell their product, but a corporate liar through and through.

i've seen it happen many times in my relatively short life
>>
>>151244497
No, they said pretty much what he green texted. Sean was quite consistent at it in fact, as consistent as he was at saying it was "pretty much" single player, because the universe was so "huge". But when, at release, the vastness of the universe proved insufficient to keep players off of the same planet, and the same place, the other aspect of his promises proved deceptive. So stop trying to wave one around while pretending the other never happened. The video evidence has been repeatedly posted. Do you need it again?
>>
>>151251126
From a technical standpoint that is probably because the game is pure single player until it syncs with the servers. As it syncs you get the changes from all other players who have also synced. I have no idea when it syncs, but I'd guess when you log off or something.

If this is true you can NEVER meet another player, but then again this is just pure speculation

1). Fill your spaceship inventory, save the game twice in a space station.
2). Fly out and attack random spaceships to get yourself killed.
3). After respawn, make sure that there's a waypoint for your body and items.
4). Load up earlier of the two saves that you made, very very important you load the earlier save.
5). After loading in you'll notice that your dead body with items is still floating around, while your current spaceship is also filled with items.
6). Items duped, used your imagination to find ways to profit.

At the core, there still has got to be some kind of tailored experience. Algorithms aren't humans. You can set up as many fancy AI screengrabber contraptions you want, SEAN, but the bottom line is this: human-made content will always, always have more thought put into it than content spit out haphazardly by an algorithm.

Why even go to 18 quintillion planets if they're all the same? Why even put the effort into monitoring that many? Why create infinite boredom, when you could create finite enjoyment?

>>
>>151258052
>I feel like pc should have higher standards

PC gamers literally have the lowest standards, the fact that Steam Greenlight exists is evidence of this.

>devs makes a very early alpha of a game
>streamer picks it up
>thinks it has potential
>people actually buy an unfinished game
>devs are flooded with money
>promise things they're never going to deliver so more people give them money
>literally no incentive whatsoever to finish the game
>it remains in alpha forever or gets abandoned

Happens all the time and there's no way to stop it.

The only thing that PC gamers have high standards in is visuals and performance. They're quite happy to throw their money away on unfinished products and false promises.

Well that's good for you but you can't deny the fact that the surge in unfinished indie games is the fault of the PC platform.

You can't release an alpha game on consoles and charge people for it, it has to be a finished product.

There are no vast mountain ranges, no canyons, continents or biomes or anything that might make sight-seeing actually worthwhile.

Once you've seen a couple of planets you've seen them all. And once you've walked about for five minutes on one you've seen all that world has to offer.

The worlds of NMS are either covered entirely in pokey little hills or consist of scattered islands, and I'm pretty sure there aren't 18 QUINTILLION combinations of colours for them to swap through.

I believe in NMS the limit for the size of natural features is 128m up or down. We've repeatedly been told that these will be worlds on the scale of those in 'our solar system', yet Olympus Mons on Mars is 20,000m high, and the Valles Marineris is 7000m deep. So it doesn't look like it. We will never find anything in the game that even comes close to the size and grandeur of real geography, and the planets of NMS are little different from Spore's

I have played plenty of games for 20+ hours because I either expected them to get better or they're very long so I wanted to experience most of it before deciding.

Doesn't matter if you spend 1 hour or 100 hours playing a game, if you didn't enjoy those hours playing then the game is not good value for money.

To address the multiplayer issue.

It is highly likely that NMS actually had multiplayer functionality, but was cut at the last minute due to deadline and bug constraints.

I make apps for mobile devices (games mostly) and usually close to deadline I just have to cut out certain features that just aren't going to work well by release date. It may have been the case here. They were just rushing to get everything done by release and decided to cut the multiplayer until it was working properly.

Seeing as how they are putting so much effort into patching the game and the public outcry about multiplayer, I don't think it will be too long until it happens.

Didn't hear this from me. I'm not in an official position, so what the heck.

A few weeks ago there was a stress test with multiplayer turned on. It runs fine with a few hundred thousand players, but once it went into the millions the servers shat themselves. Management decided that rather than risking a poor launch, and many players being unable to play due to server stress, that NMS would be released without multiplayer.

The original idea was to phase the multiplayer in secretly during an upcoming patch, because management assumed very few players would even run into each other in the vastness of the game world.

That went out the window when players found each other hours after launch.

It's damage control here now and Sean is upset because the hyped a feature which they weren't able to launch on release.

However, the successful launch and amount of PC preorders have put the company in a better financial position, so rumor has it that management is considering upgrading the servers (or relocating) and fast tracking the multiplayer functionality in the next patch.

Biggest issue atm is server load. Nobody expected so many people to buy the game.

I've even heard someone in the office talk about making multiple shards to share the load, though very few support the idea of breaking up the game world into multiple shards.

I never bought this game for "multiplayer" and have been mostly enjoying my time in space, but I can definitely say it's not perfect and not for everyone. It is for me, though. 7/10 should've waited for a price drop in hindsight but I only consider it about $20 wasted rather than $60.

Skyrim is a game that's fundamentally unfun but for most normies, they can't realize that until they start to push against the borders of the game's systems.
That doesnt mean you cant sink hours into a thing and particularly for something as moddable as F4 or Skyrim.
I realized Skyrim was garbage after my first 100 hours too. I realized that for all the quests I had done, it was more the context and story and world that had any appeal, that I now more loathed any fight that would actually take time and only a handful of enemies ever really got my heart pumping.
DAI and other open world games disguise their initial limits with sheer scope but it becomes clear how hollow that space is after a couple hours of pushing the boundary.

A tiny team did a good job making that universe but their active omission of details and vagueness when describing the depth of mechanics is on par with lying given their knowledge of how hype acts in the industry.
If they had told people that "Okay, here's the most deep combat is going to be, here's the most you can do in trading and exploring on a given planet" then most people wouldnt have bought it.
They purposefully let people not know, which in legal terms is on par with giving misinformation (aka, lying).
So Sean lied. They did a good job making what they did but they obscured the actual scope of the mechanics in their game until the very last minute or said so incredibly quietly.

I get that there's marketing but the reason AAA devs get so much flak for their marketing is that they will obscure or straight up lie or purposefully over hype their game. They're not bad games but people give money over for a certain product. I do not hand over $500 for a toaster oven and get handed (albeit in good condition) collection of Star Trek dvds worth a similar amount. Marketing a game as one thing and selling another is literally illegal but creative products like games and movies get some leeway since, to truly have an idea of what you're getting, you would not to already see or play it.
If only Sean and the team released a demo to give players a better sense of gameplay: Oh wait, they'd never do that cause they'd sell literally 1/1000 the number of copies that they have if they gave anyone a solid sense of what the game was like
>>
Any instance of anyone finding planets at all similar to what was shown at E3?
>>
>>151271774
Or maybe that's not what I am doing at all. If I don't like a game I don't play it for 100 fucking hours. It's absolutely ridiculous to me that someone would spend over 4 fucking days doing something that they didn't like. What is the purpose? This has absolutely nothing to do with no man's sky or skyrim or anything else other than the fact that is guy claims to have spent 100 hours in a game he didn't like. FOR WHAT PURPOSE!?
>>
>>151271464
>Is there a quest system I don't know about?
Yes, Atlas's.
At the start of the game you have the option of freeing a giant red ball from its containment. If you do, you get a few directions to a monolith, and then to a space station. Atlas then charts a course for you through the stars.

Someone who has watched a movie 10 times is probably in a better position to say it's a bad movie than anyone else.

The implication that you can't genuinely dislike a game if you played it for too long is fucking retarded. You can't hold people up to a standard where they have to play a game in order to form a valid opinion, and then conveniently disregard their opinion when you don't agree on the sole basis that they spent too much time on it.

Right, me too, but my point is that if you play it for an hour and post a review, everyone will say your review lacks merit because you didn't play enough. But if you play too long, then they'll say the same thing, because "why did you play a game you hated for so long?"

So I'm asking what the sweet spot is for people who use this logic. 10 hours? 20? How long?

My guess is that there's no answer because it's a bullshit excuse used by fanboys to dismiss any critics of their shit game.

Most reasonably one would be having fun with the game for 100 hours, and then with a complete understanding of the game that can only be earned with a time investment, realize that the game is not as great as they once thought. You lose interest and do not admire the current value of the game. I feel the exact same way about Destiny.

Although I would also say that Destiny is a very good game in that you will have a lot of fun with it before you get tired of it and realize how much Bungie feces you consume daily.

Yes. Thousands of people bought this game because Sean Murray was as vague as possible, and made it sound like one of those "You can do... ANYTHING!" games. Of course people freaked the fuck out, and blew it out of proportion, but Sean Murray didn't address, it or try to explain what the game was, or try to correct the rampant hype. So now he has a 5.0 Metacritic user score, and a surprisingly depressing IGN review.

Releasing a tweet a few days before release that "It isn't a multiplayer experience" is not correcting it, when he's said in the past you in theory could find your friends.

In conclusion, yes. You are an idiot for not caring what the Devs did. Who the devs are doesn't matter. What the devs do does.

This is true. But even then he then said right underneath that line about "It's not likely people would find each other in such a big world." Again. Im really confused why he's so obsessed with that unless he really is just trying to ruse everyone.

Like surely he can understand that "its not likely" and "its literally not a feature" are different things.

I personally didn't expect to see any other people online but im not surprised everyone did.

As for ships, find a better wrecked one and fix it, or buy one from a trader at a station.

I packet captured my PS4. When the servers are online, no player movement data is sent to servers, either in space or planet side. It simply doesn't transmit where you are, or any world sharing information. It does transmit your Discovers, and a diary of planets you have visited. I imagine that is for the Easter eggs. Also, if you press 'OPTIONS' it pauses the entire game world, including AI (watch creatures and ships stop) and time. Planets stop moving and time stops passing when in OPTIONS. This is not a multiplayer game.
>>
Can you seriously, seriously, not set waypoints to planets in your discovery journal?

I don't have the game yet but even I can't quite blame them. I preordered on PC but cancelled, I was okay with a lot of things but the whole debacle on the multiplayer, pushing back release dates, and now how the game plays on release made me get a refund. I could barely trust Sean to begin with but I figured atleast maybe the whole team could do something good but I can't trust them at all now even to update the game. I'm willing to bet they're going to go back on their "free updates" bullshit and release paid DLC to fix a lot of issues the game has. Since the game isn't multiplayer at all I'll pirate it and if they ever work up the courage to tell Sean to just fucking stop talking and stop being lying shitheads I might repurchase the game when it goes on sale. You have to remember that a lot of people bought the game and are actually angry with it. I was talking about being moderately excited for the game a week ago but now after the leaks and the release I just can't bring myself to do it anymore.

Already planned for that, nigga.

I'm just one warpjump away from it right now. I write down the system name, then the system I'm in now. If/when I warp to a new system, I'll write the name of the system I go to. Then once the patch hits, I just backtrack through the list until I'm home. And then I'll never leave and you can all come and visit me and we'll have sleep overs and tell spooky stories over a torch or something.

Try this experiment. Pick a systems that's about 7 or 8 back in your discovery log, it keeps track of the systems you visit/upload, so you've already got that list. Now, go to the galactic map and try to follow that list back to the system you picked.

It's not impossible, just really difficult.

I just tried to backtrack to my home system. It took a lot of finagling but it worked. Pic related. It's the system I'm in, and the system where my new home is.

I can see now that backtracking this way would be a hassle. As each system has something like six or so connections and there's no easy way to cycle through them.

I might just stick around in system then and not go too far.

Base building is supposed coming SOON in a future update but honestly I don't trust the devs. If they can't be upfront about what's there on release how can I trust them to deliver on things down the line? If you're waiting for a PC release, pirate it first. Cancel your preorder if you did. I'll get it later if the PC release isn't awful and if they tell Sean to get the fuck off Twitter and stop digging themselves into a deeper grave. Seriously put someone else on the game's Twitter and have them not be a dodgy fuck.

>steam lets you refund directly to your bank account instead of only your steam wallet

I can't imagine why they would put restrictions on that. They want your money don't they? Also, if you preorder and refund before the game releases, you're not really getting a game to begin with since you don't even get the opportunity to preload it, and even if there is a time restriction it'd be fine, I wouldn't buy the game until at least the first update and see how they do it. gold crystals are infinitely more valuable than natural gold deposits, just because of density. For each chunk you mine out of a deposit, you get 2 units of gold, while mining a full crystal will give you 100, and takes approximately 3 seconds as opposed to the 10+ minutes it takes to mine a nodule of natural gold. Basically, gold mountains are a waste of time because it takes so long to mine them and you don't get as much gold as you would from just mining the crystals that randomly show up.

>>151287828

Also every time I go to a new system, it tells me to go to the space station, even though I don't have anything to go there for. Am I bugged?

Its nice to come across one after coming across 10 desolate irradiated planets in a row.

i got to my second planet yesterday and after a while, i thought "fuck. there really is nothing to do. should i even continue playing?"

7 hours and 5 planets later, i realized that its kinda just something your either into or not. right now its at a 7.5/10, could go higher if they add new stuff in future patches
>>
>>151288157
Those sound like very minor additions to the game. Bigger monsters, deadlier weather, bases.

Perhaps AI you can hire to explore with you that you can equip?
>>
>>151234606
8. Obvious flaws but the games otherwise rad. Also fuck the multiplayer shit, I blew all that off the minute I heard him say it wasn't a huge focus.
>>
Call me a retard, but I am under the genuine assumption instances/lobbies just isn't working or he didn't activate it. There's no way the guy would lie for years about being able to see other players, even going so far as to talk about the technical aspect of it in a recent interview (lobbies), if it never existed.

I'm sure once that issue is patched up and the bases are added (plus farming, please) we'll have a much more solid game.

Let's just hope PC looks better and has the FOV slider.

Pretty lively snow planet at the moment. Probably going to spend some time here mining the emeril.

They need an option to disable the blue pop ups and the markers. The marker is for some off planet fuckery and won't go away.

And a little horror I made friends with.

There is, strangely, another variety of these brain bugs but they live underground with full brains instead of the half. Obviously just a result of the procedural generation not having enough pieces but I thought it was cool, a bit of evolution.
>>
>>151234606

If you like just being curious and exploring new places to see things then this is the game. If you don't mind having to survive for all of it, just adds some depth to just going around exploring planets, otherwise you would have SpaceEngine.

It isn't a bad game, just flawed. It also isn't for everyone. It is suppose to be a comfy game, just hop from planet to planet and see new things. They could add more stuff and they probably will. I honestly think if the devs actually pull through and add more stuff and once the hype dies down and see the game for what it actually is it will be a cult game, only if they continue to update the game. As of right now it's more of a guilty pleasure.

So if a planet has emeril, will it have it over the entire surface? You could spend a day just walking around mining it and still have more planet left, right?
>>
>>151288541
There would be NO FUCKING POINT for him to lie about it so much.
It has to be a result of server overload or something they can just turn off if it doesn't work right. Or maybe it wasn't ready and they were going to patch it in.
>>
>>151288924
All green ores can either be deposits or crystals, which means a planet can have two different green ores, in my planet there are Gold deposits and Emeril crystals. Emeril pays WAY more than gold and is more concentrated so I go for those.

nothing really, it's all driven by your desire to do what you wish. Also takes a lot of time, think of it like this. One ship stack (thats 500 instead of 250) of gold is about 50k while one ship stack of Emeril is 100k.

Let's put it this way. I've spent something close to 12 hours exploring my starting planet. Both on foot and via spaceship.

It is empty, repetitive, childish and generic.

Those monsters look retarded. If they were on one planet, ok, but they are all just random gibberish and if you can't actually meet other players...I mean, there is multiplayer in MINECRAFT FFS!!!!

MINECRAFT can do multiplayer, but these ASSHOLES cannot!

Why can't I travel and battle with my buddies and opposite factions? What is the point of huge empty space if you are alone in it? Have they ever played EVE?

I would rather have 1000 stars that are more detailed and player controlled than bajillion cookie cutter randomised planets.

And the fucking gravity does not work, you can shoot an obelisk and its top will float in space.

BULLSHIT.

gravity doesnt work in minecraft either.
the game looks way better than minecraft.
minecraft didnt have multiple planets the size of the world that they had to make each one different.

it's not minecraft, and they have said that they are still developing the game. go explore and share some neat things you find.
