The nihilistic message of the Ecclesiastes, the inherent meaningless of everything we as humans do, is a theme that shows up a lot in almost everything you write. Ghostquest was the most obvious example, with the protagonist Phillip ultimately learning that his entire species is nothing but sustenance for some other, greater race, and that no emotion he's feeling is even his own. It shows up again in the pseudo-sequel Dust Bunny where Oracle and Dusty are both forced to come to terms with the fact that they are not even real living things, just constructs bound to human servitude forever. Hell, even the engineer character, Kai, is portrayed as a misanthropic pessimist in every appearance he makes. The pattern continues to everything else you've written in some degree; Mangle tries desperately to imitate a real human woman, but she'll never be one. Toy Bonnie wants to be loved, but no one will love him. And Timothy, of course. Timothy's Nightmares, all of these characters, Brown, Indy, Yella, Red, none of them actually exist. They're just dreams. He will never form bonds with a real person, he will remain confined to his own mind for the duration of his life. He cannot affect the world in any way; when he dies, the Nightmares will die with him, he will leave no legacy besides a maggot-filled corpse. No wonder Foxy is so bitter and angry: he probably realizes that one day, his entire existence will end, and no one will ever even know that he existed in the first place.

That is depressing as shit and fairly on point though I disagree with a few points on Mangle and in Dust Bunny, The Ghostverse isn't completely devoid of hope, and even Them aren't inherently evil, just economically friendly. That said the reasoning was specifically tied to Le Cauchemar. An individual character, that said you gave an all-encompassing answer so you win. What sold me was the chapter namesake from Foxy's perspective. Wanting something from a time that can't be returned to, fighting for it, but change keeps happening, out of his control. The only way to slow it is to hide in his closet, his prison. Yet even in that it's futile. That sort of looming knowledge that for all his threats, insults, and attacks he's become that miserable child alone, hiding under his bed from the scary relentless reality banging from within his own closet. And it wants to touch his dong too.

Sorry to thread flood, but I do feel you nail the negative aspects on the head and that yeah, I do have a crippling fear of change that does leak into my writing (death terrifies me) and that GhostQuest, Toying With You, and even the brighter stories have nihilistic undertones (or overtones in the case of GhostQuest given it was a huge plotpoint and why Phil is such a wreck in Dust Bunny), but one aspect I think people miss is where the happy in this universe is. Not just regarding Them, but in general I think the happiness resides in living in the moment as the moment occure.

To date I don't think I've made a 'happily ever after' ending, nor do I think I will, I don't like endings in general. But to me the universe is nicest during my stories in pleasant exchanges. Snuggles and sipping tea between Mark and Mangle, Oracle and Dusty bonding over similar trials and thoughts in their FIRST lighter chapter together as well as simple, relaxed moments of Kai/Oracle tinkering with Dusty or Mark tinkering with Mangle. Also in reflecting on happy moments, which is Timmy and Oracle's large motivator, memories validate existence, and that keeps a lot of these characters going. Nostalgia is a powerful means of sustaining mental well-being imo. Those that live in the present or the future in my stories like Punished Phillip or Cole tend to suffer as well in my work, though in Phil's case it's complicated.

BonQuest is the obvious exception, being a massive metaphor for the current refugee immigration crisis.

Roommates is a bit of a different ballgame from Ghostverse content. It's definitely not as dense and loaded with as much subtext, and is constructed more traditionally as a fanfiction. At the same time, despite being one story with multiple chapters, it isn't really what I'd define as a continuous story. The best way I could describe it would be sort of like a TV show, a sitcom, even. Events occur throughout the course of an "episode"(chapter) and by the end, things generally return to more or less the status quo, with a few exceptions. It definitely has an overarching lore to it, it's just sort of in the background in comparison to what is the meat of story: character interaction. Which is, of course, why it's classified as slice of life. Now with the actual deeper themes, well, that's a bit harder to narrow down; there isn't as much of a concrete reoccurring idea that reappears throughout the story. You could say that it's a traditional "good vs evil" story, with a big bad corporation that has tormented the lives of many characters, but, like I said, that stuff is more in the background. If I was forced to say, putting aside the multidimensional shenanigans and shady corporations, what the ultimate reoccurring theme of Roommates was, it would be emptiness and mundanity. Despite, or perhaps because, of many of their fantastic injuries, the characters in the story all have very desperately little things to do in their lives. Many, like, Chiclet, Foxglove, Bonworth, Rackham, Beanie, etc, they all seem to be searching for something that they can't find. Purpose. They lack purpose. They may have jobs, they may provide services, but none of them seem to actually possess self-worth or fit in (the story's original working title, The Misfits, was quite apt in retrospect). And the more we learn about Mike, the more we realize that he, too, is an outcast. And just like him, the characters we meet are outcasts to this world.
