Been playing this for the past few days. Some thoughts. The formula in this game seems to be:

Combat:
Humans: -some can parry a few attacks, so you spam fast attack and hit 1/3 attacks
-sometimes will shoot arrows at you
-some have shields, same as parrying enemies but you have to break the guard somehow
-the boss enemy - will counter if you spam too much attacks, simply makes you dodge back a bit
Monsters: -small shit like drowners will take a few attack and dodge back after which you need to dodge as well
-while there are a few different types, it mostly comes down to dodging at the appropriate time

All in all the combat seems to be just spamming light attack and dodging from time to time. Nothing is really that interesting, though a few enemies are cool to fight, like wraiths (at least initially before you figure out their pattern). Any difficulty will come from large packs of enemies. There is some variety when it comes to enemies, but I think more should have been done. I'd really like to hear what someone that was on the combat design team has to say about it. I personally feel that more could be achieved with a system similar to TW2, but, of course, it plays worse on consoles.

- A lot of quests seem to come down to using witcher sense to investigate some area, perhaps follow tracks. That's not so bad, but it's the same every time. The sameness of the combat really doesn't help too.
- In general the formula is always a mix of talking to people, investigating an area, and combat.

When it comes to interesting mechanics to play around with, I'm feeling a real lack of such. The writing's also definitely NOT improved from TW2. That's not a huge surprise, though. Since the game's gone open world, that's made it much, much harder to write for. They've done pretty well, considering, but there a few irksome things. I was especially rustled when Dijkstra, in trying to convince you to help in the Redanian plot, told, I kid you fucking not - "Think of Yen and Triss", and it didn't come across as a joke AT ALL, writing just went full 12 year old mode there. I'm also often finding myself surprised by what Geralt says and does after choosing some dialogue option. Bound to happen sometimes, but it's been too much!
I don't want to bash on it too much though, most of the big quests are pretty good.

Playing this game, I'm actually reminded of Assassins Creed 2, which is not that bad of a thing. Has a lot of similar mechanics.

There's also a lot of small problems with the game that by themselves would be easy to ignore, but added up really start to grind on you. A lot of the NPCs spam the same stupid shit, often say nonsense lines. Ciri's VA is straight out of some kids game (I can make it work in my head by explaining it as Ciri just being special). Lots of Ubisoftlike open world elements, which are just shit (break the item system as well, which I'll get to).

Oh, and almost forgot. Leveling and items:
-The poor job done here might be what really hurts the game. I think if they'd just done a better job here, everything else could be overlooked easier.
-The talents tied into combat are just hurt by the combat mechanics. A common argument is that variety is hurt by having to be a witcher, but I think the witcher class has enough in it lorewise to make a talent tree interesting, and indeed there's quite a few interesting talents in the game. The combat mechanics are just really biting the designer's ass here.
-The loot and item system. Fuck this is so shit. Scaling up the ass, relics dropping from shitty ubisoft open world encounters. Spending HOURS of gametime just looting fucking barrels. I mean... There's so much wrong here that, if I was on the team, and this shit was still in dev, I would go for a full remake.
-When it comes to crafting, I think there's too little. Like the potion system tho.

I can't help but compare it to the Soulsborne games in these aspects. You're always looking forward to looting in that game. Souls is just a perfect example of a game that has all its systems working together, designed to fit and complement eachother. I just don't feel the same interplay and cohesiveness when I play TW3. A tell: I can completely break my immersion, put my own music on, and play some Souls, and I'll still have fun. Can't really do that with TW3 (and on that note, heh, the music gets really fucking repetitive after you've been playing for a while).

To end on a good note. I think this game does the open world medieval RPG thing masterfully. Blows everything else out of the water in that aspect. Even with the downgrade it still looks really good, and feels huge.

I can imagine the ole spymaster blowing Geralt off when he raises such concers, but the problem is he never says anything at all. He might not be a master of diplomacy, but Geralt acted like...i dunno, just some generic shonen protag (think Luffy), in that scene.

Geralt may use his witcher senses to solve almost all of the quests in the game but in the context of the game it makes a lot of sense. The quests are well written and forcing Geralt to use tons of different mechanics when his senses can help him through most all situations would've been idiotic. They never really came off as boring to me during the game since it's the rational thing to do for the character. Besides it's kind of neat to simulate what it would be like being a witcher through the senses instead of having Geralt always figure out a new way of tackling every problem.

The combat is as varied as you wish to make it. I agree though that using light attacks and dodging with a bit of spells is probably the most efficient way of fighting in the game. The bear school offers greater variety in attacks when heavy attacks add so many debuffs before you light attack and the Griffon school makes fights a bit more tricky but kind of fun with all of the different spell variations and you can't just light attack everything to death efficiently.

I really don't see where you get the AC 2 feels from. AC 2 is much more confined than TW3 and it doesn't really have well written sidequests. Perhaps the music and free roaming?

What like taking over fortresses in blood and wine? There's only like three and it's for a dlc pack so it's not really a big part of the game. I admit that Geralt taking on like a hundred men alone and taking over a fortress like that is pretty dumb lorewise but it was fairly fun and they don't mention it in the story so I'll forgive them. That's the only real Ubisoftlike thing I can think of in the entire game. The npcs spouting the same things could get annoying if there weren't so many written dialogue moments in the games. Really the only time you'll hear them say the same things is when you run or ride past them over and over and I don't really see the point in complaining about it.

I feel like comparing a proper role playing game to a soulsborne game is a grave mistake in any aspect. Soulsborne games are all about gameplay. Of course there's a story that you either piece together bit by bit for hours through item descriptions or you just don't even care at all about like most of the players seem to do but proper rpgs are story first, gameplay second in my opinion. If the gameplay is good then it's all a big plus for the game but it isn't necessary for a great story.

Item level scaling is a bit iffy I agree but it's not like I kept finding constantly better gear from barrels or such in TW3. In fact if you craft a proper set of witcher gear then you won't need to worry about loot at all which is great.

Looting a bunch of stuff is an integral part for old wrpgs even when it's not really necessary. It makes the world feel more full of things and objects at least to me. TW 3 does things in a nice balance I think. I never felt like I'm doing horrible inventory management but there were still tons of cool items and treasures to sell and loot.

I, for one, totally understand that complaint. The items just feel bad to me. There's too little and too much at the same time. I like the potions, but not much else. TW2 had a nice thing going on by having an armor set or two for every act, nice and formulaic. Witcher gear is cool, but they've kind of done the bare minimum in terms of gear variety. For such a huge world, I would like more stuff to craft in it.

Like, it can be some stupid gimmick like 10 different types of horse armor, but where I'm currently at in the game I have over 100 pieces of leather and nothing to craft.
And on that topic, I actually killed the screacher on my horse cause birds are annoying to fight on DM.

I too played the game with a mouse and keyboard and I wouldn't have it any other way. The combat was still fun for me. I played with Griffon school techniques and used spells and light attacks for the most part so it never got all that boring. I really don't think it matters what you use much but knowing CDPR they probably designed the game mouse and keyboard first and pad second.

You know I was really afraid that the world of TW 3 would've been like you say. Boring and full of useless markers but I really think they nailed it in every other part except the endless floating treasure in the Skellige isles. I obsessively hunted down each and every question mark and probably spent a good portion of an entire day just diving for chests in the ocean. Otherwise I feel like there was always something interesting to go along with the markers. Like a neat area or a monster somewhere where you wouldn't normally go look. Luckily the game didn't go full retard with the bandit camps either. The only part that has a lot of them is hearts of stone and there's a reason for them there. Most markers also lead you to sidequests which is nice.

My biggest complaint with loot is chiefly the scaling. I'd spend 30 minutes whittling down a monster ?? levels higher than me only to receive a sword 5 levels lower than my current one and ALWAYS significantly worse stat-wise. I don't think I looted a single relic sword that was an upgrade, ever, which is terrible design. They (relics) are also way too common. I think I've found 5x the relics than I have the lower "magic"-tier items.

I personally didn't bother with crafting that much, it might be a bummer if that mechanic has some major appeal for you. I sold tons of swords and other equipment, only ever really crafted the Witcher gear and the odd sword here and there. Especially steel swords would end up in the trash frequently. Honestly, I could go pretty much without crafting. TW2 was alright, since there were still comparatively few things worth having, in TW3 you just end up with tons of useless diagrams.

Shadows are really inefficient in this game. higher settings cause a nearly imperceptible improvement in quality while tanking performance. Tree distance is the other big thing. If necessary, lowering resolution should also greatly improve performance.

Textures are easy and unless you have a true toaster there's no reason to ever set them less than high.

Kind of depends on the choices made. His arc in TW2 can end in pretty different places. Temerian patriot 4 lyfe is pretty much the most boring of those in my opinion since it doesn't really change anything about him at all. My favorite ending for him is hunted outlaw with Anais, since it's a fundamental shift in his priorities. He abandons blind patriotism which is just a mask for paternal feelings towards Foltest and focuses on muh family. Very Witcher.

Also what hurt it is the fact they also whitewashed Avallac'h and Emhyr, Emhyr is a sick fuck, but Avallac'h is on a level that is beyond fucked up, they could have delved deeper into his obsession with Lara/Ciri and his fapping sessions over sketches of Ciri because of it, but they had to keep him "mysterious" for the final plot twist where he finally betrays both Ciri and Geralt, would have made more sense for the book Avallac'h to betray them than what we ended up with, also having Eredin a bit more fleshed out, he managed to charm Ciri in the books.

But yeah, as a Father/Daughter story it is great, but it should have not taken over everything else because of it, it would have been been that nice middle in between a tasty bun sandwich instead of being the whole sandwich.

The reason it took over everything else, I think, is because the father/daughter thrust of the main plot was the only thing that was actually finished. Not because they wanted it that way. Sadly they seem content leaving it in that state. There seem to have been internal divisions in CDPR over how much to factor in the prior games and books vs. how much to coddle new players and it lead to a pretty inconsistent focus outside of Geralt and Ciri.

Those female characters happen to be the ones with most screen time and involvement in Geralt's life. I don't waifu Yen, but I would take a quest involving her over Gaunter any day of the week. The moments between Geralt and Ciri are among my favorites in the whole game, I love their bond and again, I much prefer that than any scene with Gaunter, no matter how well written he is.

I appreciate Triss' flaws. Her insecurity, misplaced idealism and unfortunate obsession with Geralt make her a believable character and make me feel sympathetic for her. I felt sorry for her after reading the books, seeing how desperate she was for Geralt. Her internal monologues at KM, desperate attempts to kiss him while he helps her recover, the way Yen scolds her at Thanedd, her jealousy while Fringilla tells the Lodge about her relationship with Geralt all made me feel bad for her. I like finally giving her a chance in the games.

And it's not like she didn't do some good for Geralt in the books, she tried her best to help Ciri in BoE (and in some ways she did) and even proposed him to seek Yen's help when she realized a more powerful sorceress is needed. Without her dragging Geralt half dead and begging Tissaia to teleport him, he would have died on Thanedd. She grows as a person and in the end overcomes her fears and helps Yen in Rivia. Condwiramurs even refers to her as venerable Triss and praises her courage, showing she has changed from that moment on, imo it was defining for her character.

I do think she genuinely cares for Geralt and that she is a good, although flawed person regardless of the morally questionable things she did, in both the books and games. Her actions are often wrong, but I never found her motivations to be malicious or evil, she is just misguided by her ideals or selfish desire for Geralt’s love in the case of his amnesia abuse.

I like her character arc in the games, where she slowly abandons the Lodge, takes Geralt’s side and tries to find her place in the world, guided by her own ideals rather than blindly following others. I see it as a continued character growth. I quite enjoy the way Geralt interacts with her in TW2 and TW3, the dynamic of their relationship and how they treat each other. I also like her cheerful personality and sense of humor.
