No Man's Sky general. Freakachu edition.

Out right now for PS4, PC release on Friday the 12th.

>What is this game?
A relaxing procedurally generated space exploration game with some combat and trading.

>What do you do in the game?
From the HG website, http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/

>Is there multiplayer?
Basically, no.

Yes it's adjustable on PC.

so why do ps4 players have to suffer

So I'm playing currently, just left my starting planet, and the next hearest planet is 2 hours away, does anyone know how to speed up space travel short of buying a newer ship with faster engines? So far so good desu, I'm enjoying waltzing around collecting shit and checking out the crazy sights.

Its in those dark purpleish column/monoliths. They arent on evey planet but ive seen them on most ive been to. You can also buy it from a space station.

Once you get craft recipies for antimatter, electron vapor, and suspension fluid you can make your own hyperdrive fuel and the game really opens up.. was able to get with 5 hrs of play.

Do planets have biomes?

They need to overhaul the planet generation algorithm. The game would be great if they just did that

Unfortunately not. This is the only thing that keeps me from buying the game. Lets hope they do an update and add poles, rivers and oceans in the future

I've been wandering around reachable areas from my ship for about a half hour. Found a monolith that taught me "Give" in xeno language and some outposts that look like they were abandoned in a fucking hurry.

Not a single piece of heridium was discovered but I've been finding metric fucktons of gold, iron, and platinum. Only realized I could get Heridium from creatures after killing a carnivorous bug that tried to eat me.

So what's the consensus on this game? With the lack of detail I assumed this game would be like a multiplayer space exploration game where each computer/console generates its own part of the universe and it contributes to a server which stores the entire universe.
>>
>Started on a beautiful green and red world full of plants, animals and every kind of resource.
>Glowing mushrooms light up at night and guide me to caves.
>All the animals are grazers.
>Heridium high rise blocks everywhere.

I don't even want to leave.

I remember watching a video of Sean saying that it was theoretically possible for two buddies to agree to head in a certain direction with the intention of meeting up.

He said it'd take weeks and weeks but that's it was possible, and also said something like "Even if they make it to the same planet, one would have to say 'Okay, I'm on this planet and I'm on a mountain, where are you?'"

Does anybody remember watching that? I cba to find it.

In any case, the beardy fucker lied. If it is not possible to see other plays within the game, he lied. He should've stated that from the outset.

With all of the hype NMS had it seems like Hello Games had an opportunity to release one of the seminal games of the decade, yet they have deliberately avoided almost every feature which would have made their game a popular hit.

One has to ask, why the fuck did they do that? I would've waited an extra YEAR for this game if they would've just added a basebuilding/furniture type thing so I can make my planets comfy.

tl;dr NMS confirmed for monumental flop. Butthurt pandemic.

The only thing which peaked my interest in the game was the possibility of eventually meeting somebody.

I mean, I thought that if all players were in the same universe, and we'd all be heading to the centre of the universe, by the time lots of folks made it there the, other plays would abound.

Sean Murray is such a sneaky little fucker. He waited until yesterday to clarify explicitly that the game has no multiplayer despite having said in the past that it was possible. What an asshat.

Not sure about this but certain planets may have a high proportion of water and therefore oceans. It was mentioned in the 1.03 patch notes they increased variation on sea beds so thats probably true. However what I was saying is that if a planet has valleys with an ocassional lake or sea it will have so along all the planet insteadof having a non-uniform terrain generation.

the worst part is i can't put any newer GPU on here (i think) without upgrading the mobo

Because that sort of game can't exist on current hardware. But hyping one up is easy as shit in the currently completely insular video games market. No matter what, people will be forced to accept it, because "trolling" is the new word for dissent.

>If we tell them nothing, they will make their own hype.

It's brilliant in how easy it is to con gamers out of their money. Why does everyone keep pinning all their hopes on a messiah of developers? Weren't you around for the Molyneux and Spore years?

they could've done that but it'd be a lot more work for a lot less content. What's better, 100 text based events like this or 10 animated events?

>>
>>151180178

It doesn't explicitly said that. Read it again. It says that they added a function to scan systems that other people have discovered and increase the chance of collision. It's being ambiguous on what 'collision' means, if it means find another already discovered planets or find other people.

>die
>greeted by a doctor who fan's idea of a good science fiction quote

Man, this game is for fags.
>>
This game, man.
I barely thought it would live up to the hype, let alone exceed it. I've been playing for four hours straight across only two systems and about five planets/moons, and it has been absolutely and utterly humbling. My breath is being taken away at every turn.
I just drowned trying desperately to make my way out of a dark underwater cave on a cold, lonely, massive planet, with ominous growling startling me from far across some rocky, eroded mountains against the backdrop of a massive dark blue system. Earlier I was marveling at a herd of grazing antelope-like creatures on a little yellow paradise of a moon with a pink sky. Creatures were screeching in the distance and tinkling piano chords played in the background.
I very much appreciate the technical and leveling aspects such as mining and trading, but most of all, this game has been an extremely emotional experience for me so far. I could barely pull myself away from my first system once I acquired the warp cell. No matter what I'm looking at, I have this excitement and this wonder and frustration that I am inevitably missing so much. I have never, EVER felt this lost. Space just beckons, wordlessly. What a beautiful, beautiful, titanic game. I have no words.
Enjoy, everyone. And thank you, Sean and Hello Games. Jeez Louise.

The 970 and rx480 are fairly similar in price and performance however the 480 is newer and has superior dx12 support which is very obvious in games that use it. It had some issues with power draw at launch, but is allegedly fixed now. Processor advancement is quite slow right now and the 3570K is still a very good processor for gaming, especially if you overclock it, which you should since it's a K model.

Whats the deal with the Atlas anyway? I was suspicious as fuck and told it no in the beginning and later found a monolith where it was butthurt about that. Also some alien offered to put me back on the path of the Atlas and I was like "fuck that"

I just deleted my save dude.
Going to start the whole thing over again with a better idea of what to do, but it still sucks.

I personally think it's fun but there are situations where you're just going to be fucked.

When I first started I was on this toxic planet with ice storms every 3 minutes. Ended up just resetting out of frustration on that one too.

It'd be nice if the game just started you off on a a reasonably neutral planet but...

I just upgraded my ram today and can't wait to play the 12th, but holy FUCK I don't know if I can handle watching this retard complain about perfectly fine things in the game. Going to watch anyway tho. Knowing his luck he'll literally spawn on a fucking paradise and still die.

I honestly thought it did until just now. Me and my brother both started on what I would describe as radioactive Mars, and it was noticeably not the same terrain or creatures, it was always a 10 minute walk to the Heridium and shit like that. Guess we got lucky
>>
>>151184305

Still only on my first planet. Exploring a lot.

I'm enjoying it but the real test is going to be going to other planets and seeing if the diversity holds up.

Animals and plants are great so far.

Nervous about the buildings, and ruins. I have a dreadful feeling they are all going to be the same exact thing.
>>
>>151184012

I've seen/heard a lot about abandoned buildings on planets - can you go inside of them? What are they like?

so, is the game BASICALLY just 3d starbound without the multiplayer, building, and roomy ships?
>>

They are. Visually anyway.

Building is a strong word for them. They're more like habitation modules. Haven't found any ruins yet, don't think they exist aside from monoliths.

i can't believe there's STILL people who think there's any kind of multiplayer in this game

THE GAME DOES NOT HAVE A NETCODE ALL YOU CAN FIND IS CLOUD SYNCHING
THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY OF PLAYING WITH OTHER PLAYERS OR MEETING THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE ALONE IN YOUR GAME WORLD. FOREVER. THE DEVS LIED TO YOU WHEN THEY SAID "WELL YOU CAN MEET PLAYERS BUT ITS EXTREMELY UNLIKELY"

You bought a game made by a developer who literally lied to you and didn't disclose CLEAR information about whether or not there's mp at all in this game. Let that sink in for a minute.

The ONLY game worth $60 dollars or even more is Dwarf Fortress. Any other game is not worth even half that.
>>
>>151194141
ok, I'm gonna start with the negatives so far;
1. The tutorial stinks
2. no functional map of the local planet/ star system
3. some graphics pop in on ps4, probably will be better on PC tbqh

now with those out of the way, this game is literally the kind of game I grew up wanting to play. You can go anywhere and do almost anything. So far I've collected a bunch of junk to upgrade my ship, suit and weapon, went into space, got in a dogfight that I had to run away from, traded with crazy looking aliums, wandered around finding monoliths and learning their language. It's a grind to start with but after a few hours I'm learning the mechanics, and shit is smooth af now. I'm hoarding units so I can buy a baller ship with a huge cargo hold, then I'm gonna go from star system to star system trading while working my way into the galactic center. All these naysayers just can't handle a game that doesn't hold their fucking hand from the get go

Holy shit. My mom came into my room to bring me a plate of chicken nuggets and I literally screamed at her and hit the plate of chicken nuggets out of her hand. She started yelling and swearing at me and I slammed the door on her. I’m so distressed right now I don’t know what to do. I didn’t mean to do that to my mom but I’m literally in shock from the results tonight. I feel like I’m going to explode. Where the fucking fuck is multiplayer? This can’t be happening. Trying to figure whether or not I get this game. What exactly do you do? Is it just a game where you fuck around on randomly generated planets and 'survive'? I'm watching streams and there doesn't seem to be all that much to it.

Is it just $60 space minecraft without the craft?

Rare earth metals are commonplace across the galaxy. There are asteroids made entirely of gold, planets made mostly of plutonium, but things like copper and iron are nonexistent.

Please tell me this game realistically represents this fact. Any space game where gold and diamonds are worth anything is pants on head retarded.

It's still common, BUT there are still a large number of cataloged planets where it doesn't exist at all. There are even nearby (relatively) celestial bodies that are said to contain no metals whatsoever.

>>151197483
>Gold is still worth a lot
I don't know why I expected anything different... Disregarding the truths of our galaxy, it's common sense that if there are literal mountains of something it shouldn't be worth anything.

To anyone confused I'll try to clarify.
Things like Gold and Silver are worth a lot in Earth culture because they are difficult to find on our planet. (Fun fact, diamonds are worth a lot because of greed, there are currently enough unsold, uncut diamonds claimed by two companies for every man woman and child on earth to be given a quarter cup of them)

Every celestial body has different makeups and "ingredients", meaning things that are rare someone are easily found elsewhere. gold, iridium, silver, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rhodium, ruthenium, tungsten, while rare on earth can be found as common as dirt on other planets and moons.
241 Germania is a great example, in our solar systems outer belt, it alone contains enough "rare" earth metals to be worth more than the entire planets yearly income.

This isn't really super science or anything, it's very common knowledge to anyone with even a basic understanding of how the universe works. It always boggles my mind when any fiction that accepts rapid space travel still places any value on the same things we do on earth.

Good news is that it's DRM free on GoG, so no need to wait for a crack or not play it at all due to denuvo fuckery.

I like that they aren't going with denuvo and would like to support them because of this, but $60 on an indie 12 person studio game is insane, especially on PC. They're way over their head with the pricing.

Yeah, the post release narrative was already set up for this game, it could've been "that over ambitious but technically impressive indie title that failed to live up to crazy expectation. Look forward to the studio's next title!"

Now it's just going to be "that game where the dev lied about multiplayer". Sean will be the next Molyneux, and he coud've avoided it completely if he wasn't such a coward.

Just beat the berserker queen in xcom2 and this reminds me of tygan's comment, "what possible reason" -- "i doubt reason was ever involved in this decision".

As a dev i suspect he just got carried away in that interview. Instead of answering the questions strictly based on the current and planned code, he went into romantic-hype mode and answered based on the current imaginary build in his head.
Seen it from Molyneux a thousand times.

Still baffles me a bit too though. How do you sit there and listen to someone call your single-player game an MMO and not immediately correct them? Hype's a helluva drug.

There's no method of communication. The point of companionship is the mutual shared experience. Instead, it is two one sided experiences. You would get as much out of it as if it were AI.

Comparing it to Dark Souls III, the gestures and in game names give communication to enjoy.

No Man's Sky would certaintly have benefitted from having the opportunity for cooperative gameplay, but in the current construction of the game, just being able to see someone else offers very little. While it wouldn't need structural overhaul, it would need some significant mechanical additions.

Guessing you guys never played Starbound.

When the world is as big as this, there's no reason to ever, ever go somewhere you've already been. Just keep moving, there's always a new planet with more stuff.

That's both the blessing and the curse of having a "sandbox" this big. Nothing you do matters. You could literally be nuking each planet you visit, fuck each SOLAR system you visit out of extinction, and it wouldn't make a shit bit of difference.

BUT NO ONE LISTENED

NO ONE LISTENED TO 30 YEAR OLD WISDOM

http://www.fudco.com/chip/lessons.html

The first goal-directed event planned for Habitat was a rather involved treasure hunt called the "D'nalsi Island Adventure". It took us hours to design, weeks to build (including a 100-region island), and days to coordinate the actors involved. It was designed much like the puzzles in an adventure game. We thought it would occupy our players for days. In fact, the puzzle was solved in about 8 hours by a person who had figured out the critical clue in the first 15 minutes. Many of the players hadn't even had a chance to get into the game. The result was that one person had had a wonderful experience, dozens of others were left bewildered, and a huge investment in design and setup time had been consumed in an eyeblink. We expected that there would be a wide range of "adventuring" skills in the Habitat audience. What wasn't so obvious until afterward was that this meant that most people didn't have a very good time, if for no other reason than that they never really got to participate. It would clearly be foolish and impractical for us to do things like this on a regular basis.
>>
Fucking flying eels
>>
>>151227948
Again and again we found that activities based on often unconscious assumptions about player behavior had completely unexpected outcomes (when they were not simply outright failures). It was clear that we were not in control. The more people we involved in something, the less in control we were. We could influence things, we could set up interesting situations, we could provide opportunities for things to happen, but we could not predict nor dictate the outcome. Social engineering is, at best, an inexact science, even in proto-cyberspaces. Or, as some wag once said, "in the most carefully constructed experiment under the most carefully controlled conditions, the organism will do whatever it damn well pleases."

If I liked subnautica will I like this game?

DESU it looks worse in every regard, but asking from people who have played both.

Yep.

Only grenades damage the ground. Mining laser and boltcaster dont.

once youve installed your grenade tech, L1 should fire plasma grenades

yes you can

So where's the cheapest place for a PS4 owning britfag to get NMS? Cheapest I've found so far is £45.

if you can wait a about week I guarantee there will used copies getting traded in at your local gamestop by people who thought the game had multiplayer

I was expecting dissapointment, but I was at least hoping there'd be a quest system, or something. Somehow they managed to make the game even more dissapointing than I thought they could. Jesus christ.

This game is gonna die real fucking quick if they don't add a multiplayer aspect, or a building aspect, or something to fill this giant content void.

its gonna people hard how much of a letdown this game actually is from what it was purported to be
>>
The tech to this game is pretty damn amazing, the way everything streams seamlessly as you jump from the surface of a planet, to outer space, to another planet, is really great.

Too bad there is no game here, it's a glorified tech demo, none of the game systems are particularly fun or relevant or have any progression to them. I was expecting at least Starbound (1.0) in 3D, that would have been pretty damn cool, but there's none of that.

>This game is gonna die real fucking quick

It doesn't matter, they already got their money, millions of people will have bought it before realizing how shallow the game actually is. Exact same shit with The Division. Ubisoft make FUCKLOADS of money and broke sales records, then over the course of a month everyone realized it was a piece of shit and by the end of it 95% of the playerbase just left.

This. There's like a grand total of 7 things to do. Unless there's some sort of faction warfare, or Piracy crews, or mission system nobody is telling me about, this is probably the biggest let down since Destiny at release.

>>151231348
I don't like this feel. When will people wake up and stop with this fucking hype bullshit. This is the wrong time to be hyped for things. 2008-2011 was the time to be hyped for things. Not now. Jewish tricks are too common these days.

>people literally found eachother on DAY FUCKING 1

why are people acting like the "multiplayer" lie was the worst, when the worst is the fact that they clearly lied about the scale of the game. i wouldn't be surprised if the game was actually 1/100000000000000000000 the size that they claimed it was

Everything in the game is cosmetic. A shallow veneer stretched super thin. It's awful. I've been moving as far from the first system as I can and the planets are all the same. Either toxic or not. With different colors. No ice planets yet. No oceans yet. All have life. Only moons can be atmosphere free.

Well-implemented multiplayer would have been the only thing that would get me to pay for No Man's Sky.
Now? No Man's Buy.

>>151236259
Yeah, that would be a positive. But they've got Sony's backing, so I'm sure Sony would do everything to ensure they got as much of their money back before they let the studio die its proper natural death from bad business strategies and project management.
