I played or a solid 90 minutes and nothing crashed.

As just a general review: The pacing is slow, but I understand in the sense that the games wants you to learn how to crawl before you can walk. Everything feels big, because you are so small. And leaving the atmosphere of you "home" feels massive achievement.

>It seems like it's a lot of work to incorporate multiplayer with a high chance that it won't even happen.
Sean:
>The only answer that I can think of for this is a really technical one. If we were to make a game where we synchronized every player, what they were doing with every other player, then that would be impossible and no one has ever done that. What we can do is, like many games that you have at the moment, where you are flying around with an open lobby. People are coming into that lobby and leaving it – like if you play Watch Dogs or something like that. Effectively, we have players joining your discrete space. We're not trying to make an MMO where you can play with literally 60,000 people on screen. We handle the case like where other people can fly past in your game or that you can bump into other players in the game.
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/12/10/stop-thinking-of-no-man-s-sky-as-a-multiplayer-game.aspx

>That doesn't mean that players will never meet one another, but even if they do, Murray made it clear in an interview with Game Informer that No Man's Sky definitely isn't an MMO. It's not designed to have a bunch of players all in the same place at the same time, playing alongside each other. However, the game is prepared in the unlikely event that you do come into contact with another player, due to a personal 'lobby' that surrounds each player like a bubble.

If you were someone who picked a direction in Minecraft and just started walking, you'll probably enjoy the game's exploration. Lots of neat stuff to see, shit to jump around on, etc.

Inventory space is garbage, easily the largest shortcoming of the experience so far. How you're supposed to get by with less than 30 inventory slots for you and your ship on the outset is beyond me.

Space is fun. You fly around it, you can shoot rocks if you want.

Unless you're playing with m8s you just get killed, lets not kid ourselves here.

NMS isn't an mmo, it isn't a multiplayer game where to can teleport to your mates and form parties, its like journey but meeting others is much, much, much rarer. So rare that for almost everyone nms will be a single player experience, which is what sean have said from day 1.

And somehow people have changed this to be "nnmnnoooo the numale lied and said i could form guilds and attack other guilds and form raid groups to kill aliens" ect, ect when hello games didn't lie and repeatedly said what the online capabilities actually are.
>>

Journey was a 2-3 hour linear game where you might meet one or two peolle during the entire playthrough. >>
>>151141508
>And you think the size of the games are an irrelevant factor?

Yes because whether or not it's multiplayer has nothing to do with the size. There are several games that focus almost entirely on single player, where most people will never touch the multiplayer, that are still listed as multiplayer.

The store page doesn't list multiplayer, the box doesn't list any multiplayer, the devs straight out said it's not a multiplayer game. So it's fair to say there's no multiplayer.
>>
>>151141645
That's because /v/ is here. go to /sgg/ for a better thread.
>>
>>151141719
Yes, he's being intentionally vague to fool idiots like you into playing longer than 2 hours so you can't refund it anymore.

He's saying

1) It's NOT MULTIPLAYER
2) There will only be SIGNS of other players (read: similar to dark souls notes, as in planet names and such)
3) The reason there is NO MULTIPLAYER, is because the universe would be so big that nobody would ever see anyone anyways, so it's just IMMERSION!

There is no way to see other players, fucboi.
>>
>>151141297
>>never actually read into it
There's nothing to read into. The developers said it's not a multiplayer game while talking about the game's multiplayer functions. People can't easily find out if the game has multiplayer when it has a supposed astronomical chance of ever happening.
>>
>>151141546
Not only this >>151141719 but they have said this for the last 3 years. Since day one. Anyone who expected otherwise has created this idea in their head on their own.

>>151141827
>everything else has been true, this one thing must be a lie.

Regardless, it's a single player game and anyone who thought otherwise has deluded themselves.
>>
>>151141653

What was your question again? If I am in tune with sean murrays inner psyche and I can explain the reasoning behind a decision made during the development of nms? Literally impossible to answer, i have no idea why they implemented it despite the rarity of it happening. Because it would be cool to think you're alone and then one day see some faggot running and jumping across the dirt in front of you and suddenly you realise "im not alone".

Anyway imthis argument is truly irrelevant, its just a matter of time until a player meets another player and posts it on youtube.

It's impossible. He's saying the chances of encountering another person in a universe this large is next to zero, which is why the game is single player. Delude yourself if you must, but these tweets have made it 100% clear that there is zero multiplayer.

Dev has always said its highly unlikely you will meet another player. Some people didn't know that and they thought NMS was a space mmo. Some people (like most of /v/) are saying that unlikely to happen means never gonna happen and are now calling devs liars.

No, the existence of multiplayer is highly improbably because:

a) The store page lists single player only
b) The back of the box lists single player only
c) The devs themselves flat out state it's not a multiplayer game
d) It's illogical to spend development resources on a online multiplayer component that virtually no one will ever get to use

People are calling the devs liars because they talked about multiplayer features that there's no evidence of in the game.

Game Informer: Will your friends show up on the map?
Sean Murray: Yeah, but they will be a long way away. People keep asking us about multiplayer and I think when people see this they are going to fully realize what it means to be that far away from somebody else who's playing. And I know that that's a bit weird for people, but it's what's different about our game. And we want to embrace that. We don't want people just scouting off beside their friends. I actually want people to boot up the game and just think, “Isn't the universe huge? Who are we? What are we all doing here?”

THANK YOU FOR READING FACTS

HAVE A NICE DAY, MA'AM.

>tl;dr
Sean has said that each player has a small lobby, so if 10 or 20 people converge on one spot, you may only see 4 or 5 of them at once. Friends show up on your map, and you can get to one another over a long period of time.

A) NMS is NOT multiplayer
B) This is because the chances would be so small to find someone that it wasn't worth developing anyways
C) What we DO have are dark souls esque signs and planet naming features so that you will FEEL like you're with other players

>MFW you can't even pass a third grade literacy test

He's not saying, we removed the multiplayer because the chances meeting someone are nearly 0. It was always nearly 0, they've always said its going to be super rare. Why would they remove it suddenly because its super rare to meet someone when its always been super rare, when they've always known that its super rare and they've always told people it would be super rare?

Sure, yeah, I can see why, based on Sean's misleading earlier statements, a person would assume multiplayer is possible. Now we know for a fact that it's not.
>>
>>151143053
From the same interview:
> But that's okay for us because it will never happen. I guess the whole of the entire community could organize to go to one specific spot and then they would find that they weren't all there at the same time. That would be ridiculous.
>>
>>151143167

Lad I've been following this game since the first e3 announcement, ive watched, read and listened to so many interviews over the past few years and NMS was never described as a space mmo or a game where you can party up with friends. Whenever multiplayer was discussed it was always described as being a rare event.

So please, fuck off and do some research before shitposting.

The player characters look different than anything else you'll see?
Yeah.

Will that be the first time you have any idea what you'd look like?
Yeah.

Do you have that model built out?
Yes. Grant [Duncan, Hello Games' art director] did a concept ages ago. I actually talked with Grant about using something like that on the cover because that would set the cat amongst the pigeons. That would scare people. But I don't think it's like a cheap thing. I don't want to do it. We don't need to do something like that to get people talking about whether or not they like the character or whatever.

For one small moment, you might feel like you’ve stepped into a sci-fi book cover

That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.

For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming!."

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

Just be honest, okay? You seem like an intelligent person, and an intelligent person should see why this game, in it's current state, isn't really complete enough for a release. It definitely should not for sixty dollars. You do see that, right? Come on man.

Honestly, the perception of /v/ is simply
>Every new game is shit
Sometimes it's wrong, usually it's right, this just happens to be one of the cases where it's right.

Every Star Wars fan went to see Phantom Menace in theaters, I even saw it twice. We enjoyed it, because it was Star Wars. But we all universally knew it was shit, it's just a fact. No Star Wars fan would get upset if someone said they enjoyed watching it as part of the triolgies, but if anyone tried to argue the fact that it was shit they're going to get punched in the throat.

We're all going to play No Man's Sky, but we NEED to admit that it's unnacceptable to be charged so much for it, not just because it's upsetting but because if we pretend it's not shit the devs might believe it.

A well thought out, meaningful and factful, polite message. An olive branch trying to bridge the gap of sanity and bring peace.

The response is a raging tantrum of verbal abuse and namecalling, without any real thought or meaning whatsoever.

Who do you really think the monster is here?

Reminder to not preorder the game, the exclusive ship you get comes with a warp drive installed already which makes you skip a huge chunk of the tutorial and initiation into the game

Reminder to also not buy it on PS4, caps at 30fps and dips to ~15 frequently

Are you right though? There's a ton of people who would disagree with you. I happen to like this game. I am fine with the price point (which is actually significantly more in my country). This game is what I expected it to be and more. I still don't understand what the point of coming here to shit on the game is? You came at it so aggressively too, and now you're being all reasonable., trying to get me to concede a single point, which I still disagree to.

I've said this a dozen times before and no one has ever listened, but this will be the last straw that proves me right.

The larger a games world is, the less exciting it becomes. Everything becomes less interesting, less unique. The larger the world is, the less meaningful everything in it becomes. The smaller you become, the less meaningful your actions become.

Let's say this game introduces bosses, which it won't, and cool gear, which it wont. Let's say you find the biggest, meanest fuck on the whole planet, and after a long battle you win and get an amazing something, I dunno like a legendary codpiece.

Most games that would be neat. But now, there's 18 trillion other planets, with 18 trillion other superbeasts and 18 trillion codpieces of varying rarity.
So whoopty shit.

But there isn't even anything to do, just walk around looking at shit...

I will be shocked if the novelty lasts longer than a week.

>use the position of the sun to get into general area on planet
>use landmarks and screenshots to eventually find yourself to a specific location

If this game had multiplayer, this would work. But of course, this game doesn't have multiplayer.
1) it doesn't make sense to make multiplayer that will "never really happen (even if they followed the above procedure" because it's a waste of dev time and money
2)They would advertise something as cool as that in the open since multiplayer is a really good feature for games like these
3) they're intentionally being vague as fuck near release after years of saying multiplayer is a possible feature
4) the box itself says "Single player", the same as single player games do, but does not specify the amount of multiplayer group sizes possible like CoD, Halo, or any other game with both single player and multiplayer aspects

I will never understand the amount of delusion it takes to see all of this and still think NMS is multiplayer.

There's a lot to do, though it's quit similar. There's a lot of space stations, bases, monoliths etc everywhere

Everything promised so far has been accurate. I cannot account for your own hype however.

Ive acquired a lot of Plutonium so Im probably going to sell that

>Where do you locate the Atlus V1 card to open up chests and doors?

Thats really it, enjoying myself and getting lost in the game other wise.

>>
Hey guys what do you do in this game?
>>
>>151154157
I have almost bo hype for this game as I saw the premise -while appealing in its scope and based on granting a feeling of genuine discovery- to still be a bit too broad.

Is there an objective exactly? I thought I remember reading some patch note yesterday of 'story rewritten to accomidate multiple endings- or something or other.
>>
>>151153931
There are lots of Twitch streams that you can watch to get firsthand gameplay for yourself.

From what I've seen the game is all about exploring planets and picking the flowers on said planets to sell to aliens. Often you find yourself having to constantly repair your ship and suit, meaning you have to go pick more flowers but sometimes it takes a while to find the right daisy to repair a certain part of your ship so you can leave.

Sometimes when you leave the planet a few ships will try to blow you up to steal your flowers. The combat is incredibly simple and you can just easily brush aside the encounters. Everything is a chore, and there's no multiplayer.

Some people wasted $60+ on it, and the buyer's remorse has set in so hard they think they're having fun.
>>
Giantbomb has like a two hour quicklook. Looks intensely boring and samey.
>>
>>151154261
>How do I acquire more inventory space?
You upgrade your suit, or buy new ships for more space.

>What should I sell?
Depends on the market. Isotopes are quite valuable for recharging your multi-tool for example. That said you can easily find a planet to farm more mats.

>Where do you locate the Atlus V1 card to open up chests and doors?
Not sure yet. I think they will pop up RNG.

>>151154363
There's no real objective other than what you decide the objective is. Do you want to be rich? Do you want to reach the centre? Do you want to explore? The story is the Atlas, if that's what you want, follow that.

It's an equivalent for "stop liking what i don't like". If you find something fun that an autist don't, they can't cope with that
>>
>>151155206

This is in no way a commentary on this game or how much fun people are actually having, but this is actually a pretty common experience. People will often do mental gymnastics to convince themselves that they are not suffering from buyer's remorse. They'll be overly permissive of bugs and bad design while acting overly excited over gimmicks. The facade can't last forever though, and people will eventually have to face how they really feel about a game.

I know this because I've been on the other end of this before. So have a lot of anons.

Can someone with the game tell me if they've encountered the ocean or a legit jungle yet?

I like the idea as an exploration simulator but it seems to be most of the planets are the same with slightly recolors to textures. Has anyone found anything truly cool yet?
>>
So everyone always talks about x gorillian planets or the bad performance or whatever. Can someone please tell me how the gameplay is ? I watched a guy streaming it for 30min or so and all he does is walking/flying around and pressing Square every once in a while NOTHING ELSE.

So what else do you do ? Are there parts of the game with good gameplay or is it a walking simulator with QTEs ?

So the Dev's, a few streamers, and from reading about it myself. Apparently there are different pathways to follow.

Now the Atlas Stations and the beings inside them are apparently evil from the streams I've watched when they go to ruins on planets. There's no indication to NOT follow in their footsteps outside denying them to probe your brain and give you "power" there's another weird faction(?) that you can come across called "Anomalies" which are Death Star like space stations where they point you to ether a Atlas Station or a Black Hole.

There are a few other ruins that speak of another ancient alien race but nothing on par with the Atlas Stations.

It seems really fucking forced that we have to "Agree" with them even though we do have the option to not but there's no reward or indication that it's a good thing to deny them when accepting them gives you so many benefits.

Has anyone heard or come across anything different?
>>
This game, man.

I barely thought it would live up to the hype, let alone exceed it. I've been playing for four hours straight across only two systems and about five planets/moons, and it has been absolutely and utterly humbling. My breath is being taken away at every turn.

I just drowned trying desperately to make my way out of a dark underwater cave on a cold, lonely, massive planet, with ominous growling startling me from far across some rocky, eroded mountains against the backdrop of a massive dark blue system. Earlier I was marveling at a herd of grazing antelope-like creatures on a little yellow paradise of a moon with a pink sky. Creatures were screeching in the distance and tinkling piano chords played in the background.

I very much appreciate the technical and leveling aspects such as mining and trading, but most of all, this game has been an extremely emotional experience for me so far. I could barely pull myself away from my first system once I acquired the warp cell. No matter what I'm looking at, I have this excitement and this wonder and frustration that I am inevitably missing so much. I have never, EVER felt this lost. Space just beckons, wordlessly. What a beautiful, beautiful, titanic game. I have no words.

Enjoy, everyone. And thank you, Sean and Hello Games. Jeez Louise.

Jesus Christ /v/, you're all fucking morons. Not one of you has a single opinion of your own. You're the worst fucking people on the site. You make /b/ seem like great people. Enjoy hating everything.

/v/ does this all the fucking time. Every time a new game comes out, they pounce, spewing their unformed opinions all over it, then when there's nothing left, move on to the next game. If you think otherwise, it's you who are in denial.

I'm reviewing in the hopes of counter-acting the legions of people who haven't played this game at all or have played it for less than an hour who think their opinion is in anyway worthy of the time it took them to write out their review. This game isn't for you, you probably lack the attention span and dare I say it intelligence to enjoy it. Please leave your personal aggrievances and frustration at life/your parents/your horrible social life and an unbelievable achievement by a small studio, taking a risk and creating something truly unique and in my opinion highly enjoyable and kindly stick them where the sun don't shine. I don't know what you hope to achieve by contributing your worthless opinions but let me assure you, it is wasted time, as much of your life will be.

No wonder everyone agrees that /v/ is the shittiest board, shitposting is common on 4chan, but here is just shitposting and zero discussion. Can you explain more about the paths?
>>
>>151160886

My point is that regardless of the amount of people that preordered, not many of them will stick around with the game and enjoy it after 20+ hours. The main concepts behind the game won't be greatly enjoyed by many, the game was just given overinflated hype. Take a game like Aurora or Noctis IV. If you took those games and brushed them up a little and gave them a ridiculous marketing budget, would they stop being niche games?

Well, what also killed Destiny was Activision/Bungie's bordering on spiteful attitude towards giving players more content at a regular, non-seasonal (as in in time-frames shorter than 3 months) schedule.
It had a million and one things wrong with it that wouldnt have been corrected unless everyone yelled about it; Bungie and Activision were content to not improve the experience unless there was MASS outrage.

I wager NMS will be similar. Evolve was designed in many respects from the ground up to be a pay-to-freemium game so I wasnt surprised by that fuck up
>>
>>151161184
Look buddy, rationalize it however you want. The game was hyped by many and in no terms niche. At best you can say it's a indie game that has an overinflated amount of hype. But calling it a niche game for niche audiences and then equating it to Aurora or Noctis IV is just disingenuous.

when you start you can choose between following the main story path by accepting Atlas's help or denying it and going into freeroam.

After you meet the real Atlas you will find an anomaly in space which is a giant spaceship with a frog named polo and an atlas priest named Nada.

Polo will give you three options he will show you where the atlas stations are so you can go down the path easier, he will tell you where black holes are so you can get to the center of the universe faster, or he will just give you some supplies so you can continue to freeroam.

Interesting. Are the implications of each path understood yet?
>>
>>151161705
So Polo and the Priest are the real Atlas and the giant red globes are fake?

It still doesn't seem like paths. So one Path is to follow Black Holes, the other one is to go to Atlas Stations and make deals with questionable shady as fuck red globes or just fuck off everyone and explore?

I mean, when you find ruins they say the Atlas are actually really fucking evil; so it, at least to me, alludes to more focused decisions or things to do but going to the Atlas Stations is ether just accepting free shit or denying the deal with the devil and get nothing at all

It all feels convoluted.

What a faulty argument.
Skyrim is a game that's fundamentally unfun but for most normies, they can't realize that until they start to push against the borders of the game's systems.
That doesnt mean you cant sink hours into a thing and particularly for something as moddable as F4 or Skyrim.
I realized Skyrim was garbage after my first 100 hours too. I realized that for all the quests I had done, it was more the context and story and world that had any appeal, that I now more loathed any fight that would actually take time and only a handful of enemies ever really got my heart pumping.
DAI and other open world games disguise their initial limits with sheer scope but it becomes clear how hollow that space is after a couple hours of pushing the boundary.
Once you understand a game's limits, you appreciate what it does with more clarity. Skyrim and DAI and F4 are predicated on not exploring everything rather than the experience of exploring

Fact: It does not list multiplayer anywhere on the box, even though literally every PS4 game with any amount of multiplayer lists network players on the box.

EVERY SEAN MURRAY INTERVIEW EVER

>Sean, does No Man's Sky have multiplayer?
Multiplayer is not really a big focus
>Yes Sean, but is it in the game?
It's not an MMO or a deathmatch game
>Yes Sean, I understand that, but is there multiplayer in the game?
We want there to be a sense of you being in a universe with other people
>Does that mean that there is multiplayer?
You might go to a planet and find out someone else was there before you, they've named the plants and animals.
>But is there multiplayer?
It's such a big universe, it's possible no two people will ever be in the same place at once
>But if they are will they be able to see or interact with each other? Is the game multiplayer?
We want there to be a sense of being somewhere where someone else is, but you can't play a deathmatch.
>Can you actually see the other player on your screen though? Can you interact with them?
A little bit like Dark Souls, we want there to be a sense that there are other people playing the game at the same time

Will not be here for the next thread, but constructed a basic OP to get us through the first few threads. Feel free to use it or build off of it.

No Man's Sky general. Don't Believe His Lies Edition.

Out right now for PS4, PC release date on Friday the 12th. Be aware that any gameplay you see is from console releases. There is speculation but nothing concrete on how the game will look and play on PC, most likely will only have extra optimization options.

>What is this game?
A pretty relaxing exploration game with some basic combat and trading thrown in. If you enjoy exploration without the need for deep gameplay mechanics you may enjoy this game.

>Is there multiplayer?
No. You will not meet anyone while you play. You cannot go to the same system as someone else and meet up with them and go explore or dogfight together. Multiplayer has been promised for a later update, TBA.

>I heard this Sean guy say-
You will need to harvest all of the salt from the ocean to have enough to take for everything he says. He has passion but has no idea how to engage his audience. Don't immediately believe everything he says.

>What do you do in the game?
From the HG website, http://www.no-mans-sky.com/2016/08/what-do-you-do-in-no-mans-sky/
Do not expect anything more than this.

Is NoMansSky a pseudo-DRM online-only thing like Elite: Dangerous is? Or is it something you can modify freely?

>DRM free if you get GoG version. Online is optional.

If it's truly optional, thank god. Sandbox games' greatest asset is usually the modding community's ability to create tons of better and free content.

Elite: Dangerous really fucked over that game by having pseudo-DRM online only requirement. No modding community at all, just so they could retain the right to sell ship skins.

I remember watching a video of Sean saying that it was theoretically possible for two buddies to agree to head in a certain direction with a view to meeting up.

He said it'd take weeks and weeks but that's it was possible, and also said something like "Even if they make it to the same planet, one would have to say 'Okay, I'm on this planet and I'm on a mountain, where are you?'"

Does anybody remember watching that? I cba to find it.

In any case, the beardy fucker lied. If it is not possible to see other plays within the game, he lied. He should've stated that from the outset.

With all of the hype NMS had it seems like Hello Games had an opportunity to release one of the seminal games of the decade, yet they have deliberately avoided almost every feature which would make their game a popular hit.

One has to ask, why the fuck did they do that? I would've waited an extra YEAR for this game if they would've just added a basebuilding/furniture type thing so I can make my planets comfy.

tl;dr NMS confirmed for monumental flop. Butthurt pandemic.
