UE4 Shouldn't be on the list, way too much overhead compared to other engines and most of the time useless except for the average "look at these graphics!!!" with horrible optimization and even more bugs.

EG; You haven't been able to use the orthographic camera for almost two entire years now because it doesn't actually work. I personally tried three times getting into the engine but each project barely got off the ground because all the issues.

Maybe once UE4 has matured in a few years it'll be a decent engine for creating games but right now its nothing but fancy graphics.

This happens in every game engine and is a massive problem for commercial projects. This is the main reason many studios only use in-house engines despite the development costs.

basically the constraints haven't been fine tweaked to the point of absolute stability yet, they have to be perfect or else the characters joints create a feedback loop of spazzing causing them to spontaneously explode. i'm leaving all the constraints loose for now until the movement and combat are to my liking.

Look at Machinarium. It's basically a puzzle game. You get a room, and have to find a way to get out. There's no dialogue or any grand story, and there's no usual point 'n' click bullcrap like you have to find X thing at a distant map to open some door Y chapters later. I wanted to love old school point 'n' clicks like Maniac Mansion and Syberia, but I always gave up after a while because it either was boring or the "puzzles" were just random. With Machinarium (and in every Amanita Design games) your goal is always clear, and you don't have to use cartoon logic to solve things. That was a huge improvement for me. The only point 'n' click I've ever enjoyed up to this date.

Try a different method. Collect all that is to be deleted into a temporary array. And then loop through the temporary array deleting everything off the original array using remove element.
It may be messing with the index value because you're removing things and changing the indexes mid loop.

Depending on how complex your scenes are, you could do a couple raycasts a short distance apart: one at arm length and one slightly above that. If both of them are triggering, you're against a solid wall, if the bottom one is triggering you're against a ledge.

This won't fix anything probably, but one of the weird problems I'm having is every time I want to access the struct inside the object reference inside my array, I have to spawn a new actor in the world, cast to him, and then get the struct information from him, and then destroy the actor, or I get an error and it doesn't work

It's better to break down into small sections.
First, consider that if you use a single model with a UV map, texture sizes are only so big. You'd be stretching one texture over an incredibly large amount of surface area resulting in a low resolution output.
Secondly, modern engines tend to use occlusion culling to avoid drawing things which are hidden behind other objects in a scene - if you use a single large model everything is drawn all of the time. If you use several large models, then if any single vertex of the model is visible, the entire model gets drawn and you've wasted resources.
Smaller models also lets you re-use these assets throughout your scene.

Replaced the placeholder tiles with better looking placeholder tiles to test out the occurrence of random spots of tiles. Working on making everything more interesting to look at. Will probably add enemies and things like torches, piles of rocks, barrels, etc. next

I changed the player health system so that it is broken up into one live percentage and several recharges. Medium powered attacks like the bullets normally would burn an entire charge but if its already partially drained it wont spill over. Quick damaging melee attacks can burn through them pretty fast, though.

I got it working. It involves multiple cameras and render textures and messing with ortho sizes. You also need to so a lot of integer snapping with positions. Took a shitload of work desu.

I haven't posted for a while but here's what I've done:

>changed block spell from shield to magic circle thing. It blocks projectiles and melee attacks. Can be used on ground, in air and while crouching

>dropping down from platforms is now double tap down instead of down + jump because that's slide now
>tried to fix knight attacks, they still look bad
>you can no longer autocombo by just holding attack button. You do normally the horizontal swing (on ground and crouching) and vertical swing in air. If one of those attacks hits enemy, then you can autocombo by holding attack button.

I've done some other stuff too but can't remember everything. The blocking is still WIP and I plan to use some fake 3d bullshittery to rotate that circle.

There will be lots of enemies, including spell casters which will give you trouble without block. These knights are very early enemies (they don't dodge or block or anything) so they don't really represent how the difficulty will be.

I haven't done much progress on adding enemies because I need to get the core gameplay right first and my artist is working on porn game so no sprites either and my enemy designs are terrible.

Started on the underground area enemies.

They're goblins, the archer and swordman are basic ranged/melee enemies while the one with the mace and the jewish looking one are slightly rarer.

Red one will focus on tanking the player by using taunt (the player won't be able to dmg anyone but the red goblin for couple seconds) and using his shield (the player will have to attack him from behind)

Yellow one will buff his allies with increased movement and attack speed, but won't do any dmg himself.

3D games typically have more complex geometry. Mechanics that rely on movement, evaluating the player's immediate surroundings etc like a climbing system or grappling hook will always be harder.

That's what I did anyways, but I stressed out for a second.

SLOWLY I AM LEARNING

Head is obviously too static, not entirely happy with the little torso movement I have, limbs change size and shape wildly, and obviously timing is bad in a few places and limbs are just hanging out there for an extra frame

But this is miles better than what I was doing a few days ago, and is close to the style of run I actually want for my game than the wild and cartoony stuff I was doing before.

A multiplayer RPG. Mostly I had been integrating the RPG side of the game (which is already complete) into the action side, and studying netcode. Currently I create a unit by giving the player the location and type of the unit, the player handles it, and returns the unit, which is fed straight to the tile. There're various * at points throughout this, but one way or another it has not worked out, because when I test it by asking the tile for its units' owner, I get a random number.

Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey had some good puzzles, but that game is like a million hours long so I'm not sure you want to play it

what I got from it was: 1. if your world is big keep the puzzle contained within a relatively small area so as to avoid pissing off your players

Well, one solution would be to flip the problem on its head. What if the tiles owned the units, instead of the players? Why do the players even need a list of their units, anyways?

You could also sweep this all under the rug with shared_ptr, but I'd save that for an absolute last resort.

At the moment its pretty simple: start with a grip, add bodies, mags, barrels. After I get these basics working perfectly, there's gonna be attachments, such as rails, scopes, stocks, foregrips, frame extensions (to create long rifles and such), bayonets etc., as well as the ability to rotate pieces, including barrels, to fire in additional directions.

Here's the boss of 3-2. It was originally a giant fire snake, but I couldn't get a multi part enemy to look decent. Mecha Godzilla fits more with the oriental robot theme, anyway.

Well actually the gameplay would be more akin to wave-based survival shooters like Killing Floor, where you kill <x> amount of enemies to clear a wave, then use accumulated money to build/enhance your weapons between rounds.

I had also thought of doing some local multiplayer deathmatch stuff, like a "Potluck" game mode where the weapon pool is made up of weapons the players build before the match, so you can be that guy who puts a backwards-facing barrel on a grip so people shoot themselves in the face.

If this concept is enjoyable and works pretty well, then I was going to expand it to include a Binding-esque dungeon mode where you go through randomly generated dungeons and do the same basically.

That's kind of a neat idea though, giving players bonuses for making do with as few parts as possible.
