I thought they mentioned you could do canals in one of the earlier streams. Possibly 2 tile ones as well.

I don't know how I feel about this. The difference between a bad start and a great start is going to be a lot bigger than in civ 5. Really hard for multiplayer balance.

Have you guys seen this yet? 150 turns as Japan in Civ 6, without commentary

Sean Bean's lines and Leader voice lines don't seem to be finished yet though
>>
Are amenities just for the city they are in or are they like Civ4 where every city with a connection shares all their amenities?
>>
In this civ 5 game i'm having, about 100 turns ago, I had diplomatic penalty with some civs with them being "concerned about my early warmongering" despite the fact that I only was in wars were I got attacked.

However, that penalty is no longer showing up. Should I assume that the penalty has expired, or is it just not showing? If I attack somebody now/get attacked, will it go back to "early warmongering", or will it skip ahead to the next stage of that?

Is there a guide that goes into detail regarding the mechanics of dilopmatic modifiers in general?

Also Purity was hands down the best affinity despite having comparatively lame passive bonuses
>>
>>150789702
Multiplayer should be played on map scripts that are very specifically made to balance starts. Otherwise, different starts encouraging vastly different styles of play is a good thing.
>>
>>150789702
Even if you take the same general path in every game of Civ 4 if you want, starting position and the geography around your first few cities still influences things enough to make a difference.
>Marble or Stone can make the difference between building a wonder or not
>lack of an important military resource like bronze may encourage early research of iron, or encourage horse spam to compensate
>having no coast or coast but no resources around to justify coastal cities means some techs are shit and you miss out on useful buildings and wonders
>simple lack of food stunting growth
>resources spread in specific ways that you can't grab many with a few cities, encouraging wide spread if you want to work tile that can do anything
>river tiles encouraging cottage spam, mountains encouraging mine spam
>later in the game you can spam rivers with waterwheels and hills with windmills
>lots of jungle encouraging iron working, or discouraging/encouraging settling an area because you have to chop everything but there may be good resources in there
>late game gives you more options to make cities placed in far out places more viable, especially considering how certain resources can land on ridiculous tiles like an oil next to a bunch of tundra and 4 beavers
I hope they don't take the, "make games more unique" approach so much through geography so much you end up taking the same route every time when you encounter the most blatantly obvious option, it shouldn't be so influential.
>>
>>150795959
Different Civ bonuses should influence that at least, like Brazil values rain forest tiles a lot more than other Civs.

Are you fucking serious, Assyria?
>>
>>150797450
Playing modded leads to lots of crazy ass doomstack fights at corridors. My funnest game I ever had was against Persia, we were both throwing dozens of units at each other. Tons of jungle and mountains on the map, there was only a few places you could really place units offensively. We had small squads of 3-4 units held up in defensive positions, both sides essentially creating a funnel where we threw all of our shit into. Going down the funnel meant that some units on the side would pounce from the sides, so we were creating massive landing parties to place on ships. (At least this is what I was doing out of logic, they were probably doing it just because it was an option as an AI).

I at some points managed to push in and destroy a few of his frontier cities, that were absolutely fucked because all the resources were getting pillaged. We were spamming roads to get units in and they were getting ransacked a few turns later. It took so much effort to take out the cities, as they were surrounded by jungle and chopping it wasn't reasonable, that whoever owned that area would get pushed on as their offensive force would be exhausted. Cities kept getting built and toppled, AI building them in the same place every time but it was still a pain. That's where all the elephant resources were too, so it couldn't be ignored, and whoever controlled it could push into the cities actually producing commerce and science.

I was laughing when I eventually lost.

I have at least a bit of faith in firaxis to balance out the adjacency bonuses from tiles, simply because they arent the vanilla/BE team and the balance in gk/bnw isnt terrible

>>
How does Stellaris stack up to the likes of Civ V or EUIV? It looks like it has a bit of a tedious start
>>
>>150807996
It has tedious middle and tedious lategame. Start is where fun is.
>>
>>150790793
Diplomacy in Civ V is pretty much non existent. You having warmonger penalty is, you either conquered a city(taking cities in peace treaties don't give warmonger penalty) or declared war on someone(this is really small compared to conquering cities), otherwise you can't get warmonger penalty.

It either actually expired or the AI you're talking to is deceptive and is trying to look friendly, then will betray you. In that case you don't see negative modifiers in the relationship and they show something like "wants friendly relationships with our empire".

There aren't stages of warmongering, it's what the AI you're talking to is thinking about your warmongering. Like you can have 500 warmonger points and a peaceful guy would think you're a warmonger menace to the world and other warmonger probably wouldn't give a shit at all.

Warmonger points slowly go down, it also depend on the era I think. In the early eras it's much faster, therefore you can just steal settlers from other civs and they'll forget it in the future

>>
>>150807996
It is a GS, so completely different to Civ V.
Comparing it to EU4, it's all over the place.
The groundwork is there. It could quite well be EU4 in space, but it's nowhere near there yet. The start isn't that tedious though. Less tedious compared to harder starts in EU4.

Is there a guide that explains the specific mechanics and values of all the diplomatic modifiers?

I found http://www.carlsguides.com/strategy/civilization5/diplomacy.php but it doesn't go into the amount of detail I want, which is the exact math the game uses and the exact way stuff works mechanically with how stuff interacts and how long stuff lasts for and so on

Has any game actually used opinion system for anything other then some AI abstraction?

I always thought it would make sense for it to represent how your population feels about specific nation and thus how they would feel about war or cooperation with them.
>>
>>150810030
No, and that's a shame : your population never get to speak their mind.
I assume that's because your propaganda is always perfect.
>>
>>150809904
>values of all the diplomatic modifiers?
Not really possible because AFAIK those values depend on the AIs. An AI that has an expanding of 10 will hate you for expanding more than an AI with expanding of 6.

Seriously, diplomacy in Civ V is really barebones, just know the personality of other leaders and act accordingly to it and you'll be fine
>>
>>150810409
For example, you must destroy Martin Luther King quickly. Same with Gandhin Fidel Castro, and Adolf Hitler.
>>

Surely you could still show the values and just show the variance per AI personality with a variable, no?

Vox Populi is one of the mods NOT on Steam Workshop and is located where most other mods not on the Workshop for Civilization are: namely, on CivFanatics. Kill yourself.

Caveman2cosmos and Realism Invictus for 4 are pretty good. For something mostly visual there's diversica. CiV 5 has tons of meme mods, the biggest one I know for 4 is Civ4chan for meme nostalgia.

BUG mod for Civ 4 is generally useful no matter what, adds a lot of things to the UI so you don't have to dig around menus. Mandatory in my opinion.

One of the retarded things in Civ V was how civilian units didn't change their looks based on the era/tech. Workers would still be workers from 4000 bc, caravans would still be people with camels in 2000 AD. I think this was fixed in BNW but still it remained for a retardedly long time

I wonder will shit like this exist in Civ VI

I wasn't hyped at all until I saw that lets play in the OP.

There seems to be a lot of great new mechanics added in good ways. Like city defense being more than just a number.

The art style also isn't as bad as i feared in motion.

I figure it's a modern game so about 6 months after release will be when it really starts hitting its stride and after all the expansions it'll be amazing.

Frenchs are the worst online players. They're the most prone to blog about their life, whine about their team, and talk shit when they win.

>>150816958
I haven't played EL for long but one thing I can say for sure is, the resource system doesn't work like Civ. You have resources in your tiles, and you gather them every turn. In Civ V, if you had one iron in one tile and build mine there, you would have one iron forever and when you built an unit that iron would be used on it as maintenance as long as that unit existed
In EL, if you build mine on iron you gather iron every turn, and buildings, units and shit like that require like 10 iron, and they don't have iron in maintenance

You understand what I mean? So it's better to get resource techs early so you start stockpiling them early, this is especially important if you're going for wonder victory as I think every wonder has resource requirements

About mods idk, I should get into EL sometime, I'm playing ES currently

Was cautiously optimistic until the pre-release build footage came out. Only seen the Marbs/Quill/Filthy stuff but it's enough to get me hyped. So far we've seen everything V has plus a far more flexible policy and city building system.

My only real question right now is how many leaders are civs going to have. From what I can tell we'll either have multiple or we will be able to use them with non-native civs.

Do you think they had the districts system in mind from awhile ago, or they're just going off how well it worked for Endless Legend?

As much as I like it I feel that it'll outstrip EL in a lot of ways. And I love EL.
And before we have any hope of a sequel to that, Endless Space 2 has to come along and be mediocre first.

I have pretty good idea what wheat looks like. Or is it Barley? Or maybe rye? I don't know how to tell them apart, but I would recognize the symbol.

Meat would make most sense, though it's weird to see it as yield of something that clearly a field and not pasture.

Actually corn outproduces rice by a bit. But a significantly larger portion of the corn crop goes to animal fodder.

>>150823769
Not really. Potatoes like corn were obtained from the Americas. Potatoes went on to be a very important crop for more northern countries, but rice, wheat and down in africa, grass-like tubers like yams fed more people for far longer.

>>150823824
Quite a few culturally vegetarian peoples that didn't eat meat.
Most of those did eat fish though. But it's weird to represent land meat and fish together.

I personally feel that wheat is the ideal image to represent worldwide food.

Hahahahha
You have no idea how important rice was to Mediterranean nations, about half of which are european. The Roman used rice as far north as Germany because it was easily transported even.

The potato was only relevant after it was brought back from south america in the mid XVI century.

The Japanese didn't eat meat (much) but I imagine that putting a steak on as an image would make sense
Still I agree, either wheat or bread sounds like the best choice (almost everyone made bread of some sort, the chinks even managed to make it with rice).
It would be cool though if every nation or culture had different icons
So the Chinks, Koreans, Nips and Viets have rice, Europe has bread, Mideast has barley or something, the Americas get corn.
>>

A green stem and leaf coming out of a large tan seed/tuber is quite distinctly a potato.

Still not really necessary though.

Doesn't look too different. Still filled with air pockets because making gas to rise something isn't hard.
Doesn't boom as hard as wheat bread though, and is a lot more crumbly. Because it lacks gluten, which is what gives wheat products strength and elasticity.

I thought that Dune was the only series I ever read that was like Lord of the Rings in the sense of the complete autism with which the author built the fictional world. My edition of Dune had footnotes and in-line citations, leading to this huge index at the back full of notes about the story's universe. It was amazing.

And then Brian shat all over it.
Actually in fairness I blame Kevin J. Anderson, the co-author. His own sci-fi series are so fucking awful that I suspect he's the one who caused Brian to fuck up.

>>150840315
Yeah it was well and truly a world down to the smallest detail.

If you do appreciate such depth then I would highly recommend Steven Eriksson's 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen'.
I mentioned that while God Emperor of Dune might be my favorite book, Dune isn't my favorite series.
Malazan Book of the Fallen probably takes that cake.

Series of 10, actually finished.
Overarching events, but each volume begins and concludes its own story within itself.(sole exception being the penultimate book).

Primarily reads as one half; gritty small military squad experience, one half grand continuing epic between very compelling nigh-demi-god characters. They slot together very well.
Several of the characters are superbly written.

Sometimes it comes off as harsh and edgy but it really isn't too bad.
Absolute fuckton of characters and the world and its history is incredibly well developed.

>>150840510
I don't know how far Brian's stuff took it, but I do recall a few quips Leto II gave after looking in his memories and learning about a similar story(far more within reason though).

>>150840570
Yeah original is best story. Next two of the trilogy are good but some people don't think follow the first well. Fourth is my favorite and pretty well distinct. Last two(before he died and couldn't finish and his retard son picked up his notes and shat on them) go together as cleaner sequels and are a lot of highs and lows.

>>150840521
It refers to a term popular here and in other EU4 communities.
Going from EU3 to EU4 paradox added monarch power to the game, administrative, diplomatic and military. They are visually represented as paper, a dove and crossed blades respectively. These are arguably your most valuable resources because you use them for the most important shit.
Their value and poor fit for historical immersion had people jokingly refer to them as mana.
Your ruler would shit out 2 paper mana, 5 bird mana and 4 sword mana. Early on HoI4 looked to have similar points.

I played that game as a kid and loved it.
Well, it was the only game I got, but that's irrelevant.

The movie introduce the weird modules to compensate for two things : Leto's popularity, and the meaning of the sentence "My name is a name that kills".
It's difficult to present abstract concept in movies, so they chose to make it literal with the weirding modules.

>No mention of the jihad or any shit?
That was to keep the movie family-friendly. You really think that, back then, you could show fremen mothers throwing their babies at Sardaukar soldiers?
That shit would've been censored.
>Just some happy-in-the end crap?
Same then earlier, it was to keep the movie simple. You can't have a complex movie, because unlike a book where you can stop and go back if you misunderstood a part, you need the spectator to understand everything on the first run.
>No crysknives?
This... I have no idea why they downplayed that so much. Same with Paul's blood relation to the Harkonnen through his mother.

But yeah, everything just boils down to two things :
>the need to wrap everything in less than 2 hours,
>the need to simplify things enough to keep them understandable for the newfag who doesn't know what the landsraat is.
It's a shame, but all movies are like that.

>>150841306
In Frank Herbert's books he goes through some mind-fuck probe that plays around with his body down to the smallest connection. As he is a Mentat(human trained to be a savant capable of incredible mental computation), he can remember what the machine does to his body and can replicate it, moving at extreme speed for a very short period of time. After which he crashes hard and his metabolism tries to kill him if he doesn't eat forty big macs.

In Brian's stuff he huffs spice(the effects of which are unrelated, but brian doesn't understand this) and downs six million calories. Then he basically reenacts the coffee scene from Futurama except it lasts like a full real-time week. So it would've been years for him.

The character was interestingly written (a thousand years old creature in a kid's body), but the transformation was just too much. I remember him having a long reign, and dying when he fell in some water and all the sand slug left him. And also that his motivations are extremely convoluted and cryptic for normal people.

That's why the movie is shit.

I can understand adaptations and why they make it family friendly but that won't change my opinion of the mod. It was a shit adaptation.

I still need to play the Dune games, but I wanted a few things that didn't happen back with those. A sandbox a la warband and a space strategy game with a big focus on intrigue and diplomacy between the houses.

I don't want to change your opinion. I just want you to understand WHY the movie was this way.
If they made a movie that was 100% accurate to the book, only the hardcore fans would've went to see it.
And any director's ambition is to earn money, so they'll appeal to the masses by making sacrifices. It's sad, but it's true.

As for the rest, well, there's Emperor : Battle for Dune where you can ally with minor houses, but it's basically a reskinned Command & Conquer (through Dune came first).
Otherwise, there's the game I posted earlier, but it's extremely linear.

As I interpreted the story, his goal was basically to reset humanity, in the face of a mysterious threat(kept very vague to the reader, best guess was that the technophiles would make thinking machines again, but with a vengeance).

Specifically, he wanted to force absolute peace on the human race.
He felt(or knew, Herbert presents; Leto II was written as being practically omniscient regarding everything human nature was capable of) that humanity's natural state was one of conflict. An inescapable reality that our nature seeks out violence and change.
The grass is always greener etc.
Communities being most unified in the presence of an outside threat.
Sports riots and other radical presentations during 'peace' time.
And so on.

Humanity during the time prior to and during the first Dune novels, was fairly comfortable in a lazy arena of conflict. There were big movements such as the Fremen's jihad following Paul's ascendancy and so on, but nothing really changed.
Humanity as it was, still clumped together, not really expanding and wallowing in itself was vulnerable to a threat strong enough to hit them all at once.

The result of his millennia of peace was like pressing down a spring. His peace ended, war and expansion exploded in every direction. Humanity, bored for all those centuries; now finding itself in a burning hot furnace of war and famine, ran as far as it could along every possible axis.
The final result being a human race spread out so far no single event or change or threat could end it completely.

Found your problem; you picked the literal zerg-rush faction to rival, then didn't meet them until turn 100. They probably spawned near some other empires, and promptly began to eat them as those empires tried to expand.
>>
>>150843335
Do you properly understand that you should and how to upgrade your troops?

That's also kinda weird, Necrophages can go out of control almost the fastest. If you're playing them. They have a couple of very exploitable features. The AI can't do that and usually does really poorly with the Necrophages.
Could've just gotten quite lucky though.

As I'll keep reminding anyone of, I have a deep, deep soft spot for the fourth book. It runs so close to a lot of my personal thoughts that I cherish it utterly.(Though the romance subplot is pretty trash).

First is more about introducing the setting and being a solid story with some good action.
Then onwards you never really have the same story quality again, and nowhere near the same volume of action. Which puts some people off.
The second book is mostly about the consequences of the first book.
The third continues that and begins to present new ideas.
The fourth is the bible of these new ideas.
The fourth and the fifth are from a more common-man's(relatively speaking) perception of the new ideas which have passed. It also raises discussion on a few new topics.

The first book is what the David Lynch film is supposed to have adapted, yes. It really breaks from the books in a lot of ways though, it's a film everyone should watch, but not really for good reasons.
Those specific plot points are consistent enough though.

>>150844819
Just having one AI civ is a bit weird for learning IMO. Just have three other random civs. On lower difficulties it shouldn't matter.
Broken Lords are kinda interesting, you need to penny-pinch and push your unique purchasing and repairing features as far as you can early game. Stake as good a claim as you can over the best dust settle locations you can.
Middle game is then mostly booming, depending on how your opponents are fairing. In a way it's booming to do well in late game, but when you take your first steps into late game; they are logically through the 'more dust' doorway of techs. And you suddenly find yourself so rich you can crush absolutely anyone, with the only thing holding you back is the limit for economic victory you'll probably pass first.
Don't be afraid to reset at turn one until you get a good start. All the "good" players do it most of the time.

Broken lords are also a bit of a weird first choice to play as. They're better to come back to later with more understanding.
Elves are a gr8 beginner
>>
>>150845232
I'll keep your advice in mind for serious games and am thankful for it, but I just want a game of mindless blobbing as my first one to get used to the mechanics but also kill time because I'm not in the mood for competing against an AI.

I picked the cult of the eternal end as my opponent this time seeing how they can only own one city. Hopefully this decision come to haunt me back.
>>
>>150845232
Lynch's movie is still a good introduction to Dune.
And I still can't win against the AI in any of the Endless games while Civ5's AI is clearly weak in Easy.
I need some science to prove what I'm saying, but I think the AI is the same in Endless, no matter what difficulty you pick.

Yeah, I understand. Even for random blobbing the Elves are probably the best bet.
Their bonuses are primarily to production, so they fill more gaps than any other faction. Their basic unit is also probably the most straight-forward to use.
Finally, they have the easiest main quest, which does get you nice shit as you go through it.

The cult is a weird faction. They never do well on a grand scale because the one city thing is something only the player can really handle. But they are still quite aggressive, and particularly annoying given their manipulation of neutral camps.

>>150846028
Depends on what you want for an introduction. Enough to hook somebody into the setting to want to find out more for sure.
I played Dune 2000 and saw Lynch's film before I read the first book. And then I didn't continue reading the series until almost a decade later.

It's a good introduction the same way something like CIV or AoE is to history. You get the aesthetic, the very vague events and some characters. But you don't really understand what is going on if it's your first look into history. You can then go and look a bit deeper and understand how superficial and lazy certain things represented were.
They're not bad because of this, but they can't really be considered true to what they claim to adapt.
>>
>>150846561
This is why it's pretty good. You end up wanting to know more.
>>
>>150846705

>>150847627
I read your comment as, are there any good [action sci-fi] mods for ground combat yet.
Assuming you've played the game, that would be pretty lazy shitposting.

To view it as separate questions and that you do not seem to be familiar with the game:
A planet has planetary defense. It makes invasions a lot harder. You bombard it down with fleets from orbit. Then you land. Then it's just a very basic numeric struggle going on, represented by a few counters, their damage and their health, with some random modifiers each round. It's like the rest of paradox's game's combat really.

>>150847660
Oh fuck you're talking about Endless Space. I haven't played that in far longer, and played it far less because I didn't like it very much.
I think I vaguely tied with the AI in tech, but it didn't matter because I was Cravers and I walked over them, abusing the military system and leaders.

In 4X it is generally a good idea to specialize if you can, yes. Depends on how much production you can spare to building your planets tall, and what planets are available to you.

>>150847995
Default human race represents multiple racial types together, there was a mod to get rid of the DARKIES, but it was vaguely pulled for vague reasons from some of the vague mod hosting services because it was at release when there weren't many mods and because Paradox are fairly SJW.

Also regarding your initial question, there are a few bits and pieces in some mod forms around now, but not much has depth. Halo no clue. Star Trek I think I've seen a few mods, but that's almost just name changes and that's it.
As for Mass Effect there is a Geth race mod, but they still function like normal organics and it aint particularly immersive.
>>
>>150848410
Mostly Endless Space, but apparently, people got troubles with Endless Legend too.
But then again, I'm usually shit at turn-based games because it's harder to harass and I rely a lot on it to delay the AI's progress and get the edge while compensating for my own ineptitude at developping.
>>
>>150848410
Okay so theres enough to ground combat to keep it interesting

>>150848995

>>
>>150848668
The main difference to RTS, which I believe you are referencing as an alternate genre you've experience with, is planning far ahead. It's obviously more about playing against the game than against your opponent. Ineptitude at developing is far more crippling in 4X. Enemy AI is generally so shit they almost always have handicaps. So harassment doesn't work very well.
You need solid decisive strokes. It isn't about gaining slight map control and eco lead, and then throwing curveballs in the form of new forms of harassment and irregular tech choices to keep the enemy unbalanced until the combination of harassment and straight play rolls over them.
You need to identify what you want to happen, whether or not it can happen, what might get in the way and how long it will take.

Some connections to RTS are the importance of timings. You need to stall some things sometimes and really push when you do get your window.

>>150848995
I really wouldn't call it interesting to be honest. I've never done anything other than build a max of 15 troop stacks together and just dropped it on planets I've bombarded. Never lost, wait for them to regenerate and repeat.

I'm not really a /pol/tard, and games with weird diversity like this bother me the least. Prejudice is based on identifying problems, be they fact or merely perception and considering them as part of your judgement. It isn't too far off to imagine certain social/racial/whatever problems to not exist or have far less impact in a fantasy/sci-fi game.

I do miss it as an aesthetic choice though.
Two default races the game offers you do include a peaceful republic of earth, and a hardline military/colonial expedition turned independent state: Both comprised of humans(though different races entirely as the game handles it). Specific racial and naming conventions certainly fit that.
>>
>>150849906
Yes, that was RTSs. I'm always shit at developping properly and I tend to get outclassed very easily (and by easily, I mean by even the easiest AI in Age of Empires 2), so I rely a lot on early harass to waste the AI's ressources and get the upper hand.
The problem with turn-based games is that it's harder to do hit and run, since you can't see the enemy coming before it's too late, and you can't refuse a battle and retreat. Especially in Endless Space, your ships will always enage the enemy even if they're outclassed.
That makes all my micromanagement skills totally useless, and it really penalizes me.

I tried fighting the AI fair in Endless Space, but it always goes like that:
>painfully build a doomstack fleet
>send it to siege a vulnerable system
>AI send a fleet
>destroy the other fleet with 25% losses because they have more ships than I do
>resume siege
>two turns later, another fleet appears
>takes 33% losses this time
>and then again another fleet
>lose my fleet
>reinforcement arrive
>siege timer is reset because fuck you
The AI always has bigger fleet, produces more than I do (even under blockade) and is extremely reactive.

Last game I tried, I was a 1vs1vs1.
The two AIs declared war on me the moment they spotted me, sandwiched me, and destroyed me because I could unlock any medium chassis.

I'm still incredibly salty about it. Fuck Endless Space. Fuck it in the ass, deep and dry.
>>
>>150847995
It's not that bad, it's just a bit boring.
And yeah, we can't make space nazis because Paradox are cucks.
>>
>>150850621
I didn't much care for Endless Space myself, but not for the same reasons so much.
I had a feel around in my first game. I was a bit behind everyone else. Eventually I came to the realization that doomstack plus leader fucked the AI up completely. Leaders were absurdly broken. So you would fight a few smaller fights, boost your leader a specific way, design your ships to fit that; and then shit like taking long range missiles and destroying a nigh equal value force without taking any damage yourself.

>>150847356
Best we've got is "Prepare for Ground Assault," which stays in the same general idea of ground combat with a few big changes that certainly help, at least enough to make it require a bit of thought:

-reducing Fortifications is no longer an insta-win; bringing Fortification to 0 makes armies take normal damage, rather than 2x/5x damage like in vanilla. This makes having actually good armies for invasions important- or at least, more important than vanilla.
-Armies are divided into six types instead of just two- it still follows the defense/attack divide, but further splits it up into Conscript Armies(cheap and fast-building but weak), Regulars (middle ground, essentially standard armies), and Planetary Guards/Shock Troops(Elite units, expensive and take forever to make but pack a real punch)
-Armies take longer to train: compared to basegame's 60 turns for an army to train, Conscripts take 80 turns, Regulars take 150, and Elites take 250. (or something like that.) Basically, you need to build up your armies beforehand, rather than just building them whenever you notice a sector might be in danger/whenever you go to war.

Granted, I haven't seen how it affects end-game armies and the like yet, but considering how much better it already makes Invasions, and the amount of additional army attachments it provides, I'm optimistic about what it does with things like Psychic Armies and Xenomorphs.

>It's very simple: This is the price point we determined that we need to charge in order for species packs to be worthwhile for us to do (creating ship sets is extremely labor intensive). If you don't think it's worth the money, then don't buy it. If enough people vote with their wallet this way, we'll likely not make any further species packs and put our graphical resources into other areas of the game instead.

So making one species group costs 8$, the original game has 6 species groups. Does it mean, of the 50$ price tag, 48$ go to the species pictures?

Okay, just came back from a quick Endless Legend game.

In easy mode, of course, because I suck at turn-based games.
While I don't know how to check him, I'm 99% sure the AI doesn't change at all between easy and hard mode, and that it just affects the player.
In my game, I allied with the drakkens, and despite them expanding REALLY quickly and building most wonders, they were still terrified of my only doomstacks consisting of 3 units and an hero.
>>
Hey guys, what the hell.

Someone stole my fukken Betharian stone. It's in another sector, and the fuckers won't give it to me.
What the actual hell? One of my betharian power plants on my capital isn't running. Just who do I fuck up to get my stone back?
>>
>>150881178
Since it's in a sector you will have to find the planet I'm presuming the ai has built a Betherian power plant on. Take the system out of the sector, demolish the power plant.

There must also be a system in the sector providing them with a Betharian stone, you'll have to take that out of the sector too if you want to use it.
>>

>>150881475

>>

Sectors do not trade strategic resources, they only use them locally, or give them to the empire if they're not used locally.
>>

>>150882554
Who the hell authorized the governor to construct a betharian power plant? These sectors are getting more and more unruly by the day.

I provide everything for them, I give them great monuments to our purity, I give them vast combat arenas for them to frolic in, and yet - they still choose to diverge.

This is quickly becoming a problem.

>>
>>150891091
The thing with missiles in ES is that they're actually pretty bad due to how slow they are meaning that you could overkill one or two ships and leave the rest of the enemy fleet untouched.

Lasers are better, bullets are best.
>>
>>150891230

I assume you were the person I was talking to earlier about it. I had to sleep but now that I'm back I'll properly look into it seeing as you're still curious.
You'll probably see the post hours from now I guess, this general is very slow.

Image shows the raw difference between Hard and Endless as examples.
The player doesn't get any change after normal, with the earlier difficulties only being slight boosts.

As for the races in my experience:
Drakken are the hardest, they like to expand a lot, and their early game units are the strongest.

Wind Walkers come second, their bonuses to production are massive, and kinda tip the AI snowball even more steeply down the slope.

Vaulters/Mezari are next, they have the strongest boost to science with the fewest drawbacks, and science is one of the quickest victories the AI can win. They just don't do everything else near as well as the Drakken or the Wind Walkers.

Next is the Ardent Mages and the Broken Lords.
Ardent mages again have great science bonuses, but their units are amongst the worst for the purposes of autoresolve, so they typically don't do very well.
I have little experience with Broken Lords played by AI, they didn't seem to do anything special but have fairly strong units.
The only time I specifically remember them existing, they were my first victim when I played as Necrophages. So I'm not too sure about them.

Then the Necrophages and the Roving Clans.
Both just have underperforming units and never really seem to get very far. Although they are quite annoying still.

The Cultists are arguably more effective and annoying than the aforementioned civs, but their one city restriction really kicks them in the dick, as the AI can't really use it like a player can.

As for the two DLC factions, I've only played AS the Forgotten and haven't played since before the Allayi were added.

How do I get the AI to make peace in Beyond Earth?

>>
>>150915863

Fed and allies are supposedly less greedy in terms of war goals ( you dont have to cede them 1 planet per war just so they say yes)

I haven't played in a federation since 1.2 so idk

victory conditions are still the same i think , assimilate or vassalice most of the galaxy

some ethos like fanatic pacifist cant declare offensive wars ( you need to be attacked ) and only ethos that can enable purge can force other empires to abandon their planets as war goals

captured pops will be unhappy and making them slaves puts them into the "malcontent slaves" faction that will crate chaos and give you negative effects to happiness and production

It's in the same boat as the current Petra. If you have one tile of desert it's not worth the hammers to build, especially if you have to build the wonder on that one tile. It's way better with 1 food/2 hammers/2 gold, but it's still situational at best.

>>150916080
It comes so late though. Imagine if it was in civ 5, it would come at something like Philosophy or Currency, on top of already needing a nerd district and library in the city. By the time you have the prerequisites for the wonder and build it you probably only have 2 or 3 techs left in the ancient and classical era.

Sometimes the AI has better upgrades and counters on their units, and the higher difficulties do giver their units a lot of free experience, but beyond that they don't seem to get a combat boost.

In Age of Empires 2, they shoot some weird explosives bullets.
>>
>>150932980
That's exactly what they are. Hand cannons are literally cannons that are small enough for you to hold. AoE 2 doesn't go past roughly 1450.

>tfw watching the RoN intro

Godly.
>>
>>150933107
I thought cannons just shot, well, cannonballs. Not explosive balls.
>>
>>150933207
They don't do AoE damage though. The thing you see is just an indication of the force of impact shattering the ball and whatever it hits (ground or person). It's also a way for you to see you're getting rammed with handcannoneers, because for all their faults those things pack a mean fucking punch.
>>
>>150933285
I know. But I don't like it. I just don't like the sound they make when they fire, I don't like the explosion that are only cosmetic.
I just don't like firearms in Age of Empires 2. I wish I could replace most of the sounds with Dark Souls' sounds.

not really. I mean, they didnt shoot exploding shells, but a lot of handcannons back in the 1400's shot, well, whatever they could get their hands on, including stone, which would probably shatter when they hit things.

I guess I don't but I don't see how easiest difficulty can help that much, or cheating in Stellaris' case.
>>
>>150938737

>>
>>150938787
The problem with the Endless games is that difficulty doesn't change the AI. It always behave the same.
It only gives you unfair advantages in easy, and unfair disadvantages in hard.
So if you don't have a good early game strategy, even having all the advantages won't help you. Even worse, you'll end up overestimating your units' strength.

>>
>>150938947
That's almost any 4X game's AI. Except I think in CiV on settler the AI won't declare war on you.

Either way, it's always best to play on whatever difficulty gives the least advantages/disadvantages so it's more about what you do/what start you get rather than some overgame whatever.
>>
>>150939150
I literally can't comprehend this level of autism.
>>
>>150939230
I disagree. It's better to start in easier difficulty to discover the game, otherwise you end up with a good early game strat but a bad mid/endgame.
>>
>>150939313
But even if you discover the mechanics better on easier difficulty you aren't really learning how to properly play the game because you have those training wheels which give too much room for bad playing habits. It's better to just never use those from the start.
>>
>>150939519
But you get murdered in midgame and can't come up with strategies for the entire game. You end up improving in early/midgame but as soon as the game starts dragging you, you're in unknown territory again.
>>
>>150939519
This.

Honestly getting fucked in 4x games can still be fun in a way, and it just lets you learn your mistakes, rather than get good with the training wheels and then when they come off you can't really keep your balance in the game and keep coming up short. Also, why is it that EL manages to have such a different visual and narrative take on the fantasy genre other than your average elves, humans, dwarves etc. medieval high fantasy not-europe and succeed in executing it?

Every other fantasy that tries to be as different as EL turns out to be... gross, if I could use the word (Will use pics to elaborate on what I mean), but EL instead is pretty cool. What gives?

Most of the lore connotations float around and aren't a part of the gameplay, so they have a lot of freedom to write whatever fluff they care to write for it.

It's also simply a completely new IP that doesn't take inspiration from other existing formats that have lasted longer and have well established trope races and shit.

Everything else that tries to be different can work, it's just that most don't really care about it. They go far enough to simply not be a normal high fantasy clone, but don't put in any work beyond that.

The trebuchet's shitty defense won't allow it to last enough to destroy the castle.
At least the battering ram can damage it before dying.

And while I'm talking about strategy, the Steam game "Clash of the Ancient" isn't that good.

Bullshit it can, have you even seen how fast CKNs do damage to rams?
Also Trebs can be covered by knights or something to hold up, partially, against CKNs. Trebs also can easily hit a castle because of how big they are.

Dude, of course if you make 30 of anything, they're rape whatever they attack. The Frank axe thrower can destroy any building in a record time if they get in range, that doesn't mean they're perfect.

>Also Trebs can be covered by knights
They end up being even more expensive, and any unit that go through the knights will heavily damage the trebuchet.
Meanwhile, ram only take minimum damage from the castle, basically tanking it while the Chu Ko Nu get destroyed by the knights.

You're trying to justify that trebuchet are useful in a really peculiar setting while I'm talking of their usefulness at large.
Onager are anti-building and anti-infantry, ram is good at soaking up ranged damage and tank towers and castle, and scorpions... probably do stuff.

Also
>making knights
>not making light cavalry who only costs food and is easier to train
>>
>>150953495
>basically tanking it while the Chu Ko Nu get destroyed by the knights.
...no you don't get it. you can garrison them in the castle, pop them out before the ram gets to them, and pop them back in a second later.
>>

From another angle, one could point out that what Akhenaten did, discarding all the gods and shutting down their cults and priesthoods in favor of a single, common Sun-god, is pretty much what the Fourth Dynasty tried and succeeded at a thousand years earlier.
