You can't blame the fics for that, it's a legit thing in Shonen and ancient / medieval Wuxia which is basically shonen proto,

Killing intent, as far as real life goes, is an thing but more of a generic danger sense than anything else and humans, as an animal, do actually emit stuff that is meant to intimidate or threaten other humans, the same way being around a horny girl can get a guy horny even if the girl does nothing in particular.

Now the thing about martial arts is that observation is a massive part of it, meaning of course that even the slightest 'body language' change can be interpreted much more easily - and acutely. They also know what to do to intimidate or feel threatening and a lot of martial arts is instinct-play psychology, the "mountain punch" and like half of taichi's techniques are based off instinctual reactions to perceived threats. It's also a generic thing, somewhat legendary but reasonable from psychology and biology, that you would be able to detect some emotions in the same way - extreme anger or hatred, for one.

Now when you add magic or qi or whatever the fuck into the mix, everything gets multiplied. It goes from intimidation to outright freezing the fucker in place or making him pass out, sort of the way kids freeze in place if a huge guy cracks his knuckles in front of him and glares menacingly. In extreme cases they often just kill a person outright through giving him a heart attack (this shit is obviously fanfiction).

I'm probably overanalyzing but I hear a lot of people bash this as 'unrealistic' or 'bullshit' so I may as well somewhat pick it apart.
