>keep seeing posts about how devs would fuck over single idea games by putting it in their game.

when would be a good time to post progress? i just know if post progress, someone smarter and more experienced than me is going to steal it and make a better game than i ever could.

i cant even art that well so even if i make something extremely polished just a little art from a copy cat game would make mine pointless.

it seems like the only way to stop theft of ideas is to get widely noticed fast, that way imitators are more obvious. looks what happened to the Crush the Castle devs.

I'm going to make a Breakout game for Lewd Jam and I'm debating on how I should skin the game. Like, whether the paddle should be a schoolgirl playing tennis and destroying shit, or a boy who's aiming the ball at women to undress them, or maybe it's split-screen with lewd on the right of the game window and the actual game is a visual metaphor for foreplay, or what. I guess I need a solid direction about the level of lewd to start on. If it were a girl as the paddle, I'd also be deciding whether to place her at the bottom of the screen facing up (for upskirt), or at the top of the screen facing down (for jiggling).

Pic related would be roughly the style and scale for the sprites I'm doing.

The 6 x 7 map looked better at a higher resolution. (right in the previous post). Your oasis loses too much detail at the lower resolution.

Very true in any project once it passes baby stage. OOPs was a buzzword in the 90s when nobody knew how to computer, but it has largely been regarded as a mistake (unfortunately after kajillions had been poured into teaching it in universities)

OOP is just a tool, it's neither inherently good nor bad. Even inheritance can be useful, occasionally (it's basically syntax sugar for composition + interfaces). The issues are that the whole thing is abused nearly all the time, by people thinking that if you use one thing linked to OOP you have to go the full nine yards. And also people who don't know that polymorphism exists outside of method overriding, or that encapsulation exists outside of private fields.

Uh, I went to college for software development and I was let down tremendously. We covered 1/3 of an intro to C book in 10 weeks, I read the whole thing in 2. We spent an entire quarter on linked lists and red-black trees and then threw away the remaining 95% of our algorithms book. Then we moved into Java and wrote Pac-Man in teams for our final, where I realized why the pace was so slow -- because my entire team was fucking stupid.

I continued for another year before deciding that this is fucking bullshit and self-study is infinitely more condensed. The only pitfall of being self-taught is to undervalue theory and technique. I don't undervalue either.
>>
>>150759120

Guys, I'm deving a RTS and I was looking for a pathfinding tutorial.

I'm deving a Starcraft-like game, does this kind of games really use a cell based pathfinding system like A*?

I checked pathfindings for Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Starcraft 2 and Supreme Commander 2, and it seems each one does the same thing its own way.

Can I get some recomendation? Maybe a tutorial or something? I really don't think cell based pathfinding is the way to go but I can't be sure of it.

Actually, I take part of that back. OOP is not a tool, it is a harmful paradigm (object ORIENTATION, as in you have to do everything around objects). Using objects occasionally and classes occasionally is fine.

It's hard to rate them among each other, and I haven't read a great deal of overlapping material to compare. Just use actual books as opposed to web tutorials, that was the one thing that college did for me is presented me with textbooks that I could no longer continue to dodge. I don't think they were the best available, but they weren't Microsoft Press bullshit that I had tried once before and they were fairly complete. My C book was Kochan - Programming in C. My algorithms book was the fairly standard Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein -- which I have to point out is a bit more of a reference book than a study book, and may be intimidating depending on your (discrete) math proficiency, but it does have a reasonably comprehensive introduction to everything it uses. You'd also do well to get a design patterns book such as the "Gang of Four". Beyond that, look for books that interest you and don't seem too hyped up to the general public.

Don't. But know it exists, because it's another potential tool. The more tools you know of, the better you can make good judgments on how to approach a problem. We can send links to each other all day with other peoples opinions, here's one against functional programming which I assume you favor:
http://degoes.net/articles/fp-is-not-the-answer

The truth of the matter is that they were designed for different things, both of them can do the same thing as the other though. If you feel more comfortable writing your software in a paradigm you like, you should do that.
There is no "best" paradigm, and there's no reason that you have to write your software with a billion inherits just because you use OOP.

How integral to the experience is VR? Because if it plays a big part, then demos seem kinda pointless. I'd say make the mechanics and basics done, so that you can build up on something solid, then go with experimental stuff.

Also, what happens after the portal opens? Do you walk into it, does it swallow you, do you just fade to next level?

I don't know how you'd do it in UE4, but the idea here is that you only have to draw the hole where it's behind the "mouth". So the "mouth" flags the stencil buffer, and the hole only draws where it's been flagged.
>>

>>
>>150763790
I couldn't tell you the reason why anyone else should use OOP, personally it's what I prefer to use and how I taught myself to do it. I think it's easier to wrap my head around and maintain (as long as you keep it sensible, which you should, as with all code.)

That being said, I don't go out of my way to make every single thing I write object-oriented just to make it so. If I feel like the best option is to keep classes out of it, I will do that instead, although I rarely find myself doing that.
>>
>>
>>150765205
Except it has everything to do with its deffered rendering according to all sources online, if you are this familiar with graphics and ue4 I'd kill to know how you'd do it.
>>
>>150764551

I am relatively new to UE4, but wouldn't this work with custom shader on camera? I mean, place two cameras, one looking at the book, another, mimmicking player's movement, at the tunnel, make the tunnel one render to a material, and reference that material in book/player camera? From what I've read through the documentation this should be possible, right? Though I don't know how well that would work with VR, given that you would have to use two tunnel cameras for both eyes.

Or maybe I am stupid and everything I said is totally wrong. I'm sorry if that's the case.

Someone told me it'd be a good idea to do movement in a dungeon via an array, but how do I accomplish this? Should I toss empty gameobjects around the maze like breadcrumbs or nodes, and write a script that uses a 2d array to figure out where it's ok to hop? I have a really vague grasp of how to do this.

Use a nested loop to generate the array; Something like this
for (x = 0; x < tiles_number_x; x++) {
for (y = 0; y < tiles_number_y; y++) {
Instantiate(tile, new Vector3(x,y,0);
}
}

And then you could make nodes and connect them

Depends what you want to do.

Do you want to actually learn to code? Python or Ruby. But making games in them kinda sucks.

Do you want to do web dev? JavaScript and to a lesser extent PHP.

Do you want to make vidya gaems? None of the above. Use one of the engines in the OP to get started
>>
>>150772093
All of those but python are webdev. PHP is mostly agreed upon as the worst mainstream programming language in existence. Python or Ruby will build skills you can transfer. I suspect more people here would push for Python, and it does have gamedev libraries (pygame).

NO. Do NOT take the "easy way" with online tutorial bullshit. Buy a fucking BOOK. An intro to C (not C++ first IMO) or python. Doesn't really matter which as long as it's not microsoft press or learn x in y days. You want something comprehensive that will teach you all there is to a relatively small language, and then you want a data structures & algorithms book to move onto general programming concepts beyond languages. From there you can learn just about anything.

What I would suggest is to read up on profiling, which is generally specific to the tools you are using. If you are using UE4 or Unity I would expect them to have profiling tools built-in. Otherwise, gprof for GCC, or research for whatever you are using.

I can't recommend any books on it, haven't come across any myself, but I imagine it being difficult to find something on general practices and easy to find something full of bullshit without teaching profiling.

The OOP paradigm was literally created to develop simulations, which are pretty much the base of any game.

This is probably the worst argument against OOP I've heard in my life.

The only valid argument against using OOP is Linus Torvald's one, but the thing there is that he talks about coding at a Kernel level.

Educate yourselves for fuck's sake.

Bad code is bad code, no matter what paradigm, but the fault there lies on the developers, not the tool.

No can do, Anon.
The point is that I can't make animations for lots of varied gear (especially not asymmetrical stuff!) because a gorillion frames will have to be redrawn for each one, so I'm keeping the equipment sort of similar to the in-game representation of gear on the character.

Do you memorize every bone and muscle group? Coding isn't quite like you think it is. A big skill is knowing what to google or search in documentation. Books are more concerned with overarching patterns than specific functions.

Making headway on the Breakout clone for Lewd Jam. Fonts are pretty hard to read on this sort of pastel background so they'll need fixing.

If the player hits the left button when the ball is in range, they can freeze it and readjust its direction. If the player only has 30% of the level's blocks left to go, the paddle's gun activates. The gun can only fire one shot at a time, but in any direction. If the player misses once, their score is halved; if they miss twice in a row, their score is reset to 0.

you don't need to memorize shit when programming, it's understanding the concepts that matter

do you remember every single rule about perspective when you draw something? do you stop to think about every single muscle on a body before putting down a stroke? no because you've done it so much, you have a shorthand. programming is similar.

artists collect references before they draw something.
programmers open up the documentation and google.

they keep reusing the previous engine they made to create their previous game. just use the tools and code they already had, and put a layer of modern graphics on top of them. remove any obsolete code and update whichever needs to be.

it's not necessarily dumb, they have deadlines they want to reach.

Starting to just hate the word "lewd".

LEWWWWWWD. That stupid pretending-not-to-be-deviant shit was already boring but now even seeing the word is starting to annoy me.

Anyhow I think democratizing jams was a mistake. The theme of every jam should be "something from scratch, in a shortish amount of time". Nothing good has come of any of the themes, from zelda to boat to lewd, and especially nothing has come from the drama of competing themes, as if anyone actually gives a shit (remember how fucking important it was to add mecha-jam to boat-jam... Not in any of the uses you followed with. I'm not a big fan but it's just a word.

Did you ever bother to look up what it really means? I haven't seen a single moment around here that people used it entirely incorrectly, except with whatever the fuck you're saying.

A lack of harmony among musical notes.

Yes. I am an artist. I made everything there except the font and the character pics because I'm still just brainstorming.
I can make all the sprite art myself. Its just a lot of work.

Give the walkable space a different texture, dirt or at least sparser grass. Also for those trees, randomize color (from a specified array, leaves and bark), and randomize scale and slight tilt. Aside from that enable fog and just make more assets.

I said that people wanting kickstarters in the OP would cause trouble.
>>
>>150793078
Portals look a lot like walls, change the color from gray.
>>
>>150793481
One person being a bitch doesnt mean its a problem

A greenlight is a big deal to a dev and totally worthy of being put in the OP
A KS is maybe more problematic but its the same principle.
>>
>>150792319

Please don't let this become a thing
>>
>>150793481
I wouldn't worry about it, that kickstarter looks like shit and I feel bad about the fact that it's probably not going to meet the minimum.
>>
>kickstarters in the OP
Fuck no. Wow, how would this be ok?

Greenlight? Absolutely, if they're someone who's been posting a lot. That's awesome and I'd want it in the OP.

Some retard's kickstarter, and then other retards seeing it and wanting their kickstarter up there too? Just no. Should we have a patreon section too?
>>
>>150794097
Whats wrong with putting all active kickstarters in the OP? They're a lot more AGDG related than filler like

enjoy all the nodev kickstarters insisting on being in the OP and the bitching and drama about it. I guess /agdg/ likes that sort of shit though, it is /vg/ I guess.

I think it's a bad idea. But I also think most of the OP is useless. That doesn't mean OP putting his KS in 6 times for free advertising is "better". I think the site webanon made should be at the top and most things that are on the website should be taken out of the OP.
>>
>>150794258
Not our responsibility to market games for others. Also leads to drama like the other anon said
>>
>>150794868
I agree the OP is bloated and aggydaggy should be more visible

How about a KS shouldn't get put in unless its been in some number of recap posts?

There wasn't any drama when Slipstream's KS was in the OP

>>150787335
