Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

I more or less disrespected the player, and walked into him lategame (which you never do willingly).

That said, depending on the location of Patala/R'lyeh/C'tis thrones, the game will be over shortly regardless. Worst case scenario, I wait while BoT kills everything, Nexus charges me up, and his ozzie stacks get worn out by walking into stupid, but unavoidable, t0 crap.

Uh, because it's a fort.

Everything is a fort. And you can't teleport inside enemy forts.
>>
>>150627368

Eh, last thread died 30 minutes after I posted it with most of /domg/ being asleep at the time. Not nearly enough gloating, especially for what is my greatest victory in this game.
>>
>>150627542

What? To do t0 shit you need to patrol otherwise the enemy has first turn. Its basic knowledge. You teleport ON the throne and then move the army there.
>>
>>150627746

I can't teleport anything at all unless I get rid of AC if I want it to be alive when it lands.
>>
>>150627746
The fact that it's really easy to load any province with T0 bullshit that kills those expensive empowered casters.

>>150627746
And then you have to actually storm a fort and all of your shit dies.

Any new bright ideas?
>>
>>150628471

Its also easy to use counter thugs to whatever you have lying in wait for the mind control casters. Its a classic game of guessing who uses what.

Storm the forts with SCs and siege with chaff, easy.
>>
>>150628471

You don't have to storm a fort with all your units you know...

I have something coming that will be able to break any fort by itself. Don't know if it'll get there in time though. Still, it would be fun to use it if I got the chance.
>>
>>150628596
See, you sort of need both desu. Storming the fort that is.

Storming with only an SC is a great way to lose an SC from anti SC scripting after all.
>>
>>150627916
Teleport is pretty safe in AC, all things considered.

t. person who lost A2 empowered, AC caster, hundred gem of boosters wearing, LA Abysia Warlock to Cloud Trapeze while under his own AC
>>
>>150629143

As I said its a guessing game. Will he use the army or SC?
>>
>>150629239
It's not.
It's a lategame and you script for both.
>>
>>150629604

Then he does one and has more mages doing his thing. You cant script for every situation unless you greatly outpower the enemy.
>>
>>150630329
You can't bring mages to a lategame fort storm unless they can survive the following.
RoS (at least 6, if they're demons expect DC to be up)
ME (with possibly around 9 pen)
Maybe some other shit too. So it's really hard to outmage the defender, cause he doesn't need to worry about that shit.
>>
>>150630329
>Then he does one and has more mages doing his thing
No, then he dies because he's walking into a turn one shitfest.
You don't need to have more mages dedicated to a specific duty and overpower your opponent when defensive warfare allows for strong asymetrical options.

Overpowering your opponents in specific firepower is important for an attacker, not defender. And even then after a certain point the numbers stop mattering at all, no matter how much you throw at fort it will all die.

But the attacker can storm 6 forts at the same time and decides where to focus his forces, the defender is the passive one here, thats the attackers advantage.

>>150630989

Then you can storm every turn with a mage designated to trigger gem usage until you run out. 6 forts x 20 gems per storm adds up even in meme games.

Keep in mind the defender will also be burning the same number of gems every turn, in much the same way. And I have so many more gems per turn than bats that it really isn't funny anymore.

And that's the strength of Lemuria, in big meme games. Bats can probably break 1, maybe 2, of my forts by concentrating his forces. But he has to concentrate his forces to scratch my walls.

>>
>>150639327
Air and Earth?

If those were minor, that would be a decent mage bless if you cared about slinging damage spells at all. Earth is fine, but the A bless doesn't really get you much.

If those were major, then I don't think that it's a very efficient use of design points and you may want to ask for some help with your pretender design so that you're not unnecessarily gimping yourself in your first game.
>>
>>150639327
N9 is much better on Jotunheim
>>
>>150639410

>>
What the best use of death gems in combat?
>>
>>150640059
Don't take the air shield bless. It just doesn't help you.
>>
>>150639709
I can see AE not going together, but whats wrong with Air Shield? Air shield seems like an insanely good buff, especially on low armor sacred troops like the jotun have.

The only thing is their priests kind of suck, but they have those little goblin mages which can pump out skellies when they have amulate/ D magic.
>>
>>150640143
It depends on your research level and what you're fighting. With the right caster and the right enemy, Undead Mastery will single handedly win you fights.

At low levels, shadowblast can do a world of hurt.
>>
>>150639815
Yeah, but stealthily planning ahead to backstab someone is just, I don't know, stale? It's practically rote at this point and I want to try something else, even if it is technically sub-optimal.
>>
>>150640143
It depends. Wind of Death, Bone Grinding, Wailing Winds, Rigor Mortis and Darkness are all powerful in the right circumstances, but can hurt you as well.

As >>150640347 says, Undead Mastery can be really good and Shadow Blast is a decent use. Both of those are much easier to simply add to an army.
>>
Oh. I thought air shield had an 80% resistance to all attacks, not just missiles.
>>
>>150640286
AE actually do go together well, since the precision and reinvigoration are both good for mages.

>>150640950
There are some ranged spells that they're also resistant to, but yeah it's otherwise only arrows and so on. If it was 80% of all attacks it would be broken
>>
>>150640143
Death gem spells are among the best ones out there, so almost anything you'll do will get you some results. Sometimes even skelespam on D1 dudes.

there are some things i don't get about this game. Doesn't your population grow on its own? Or does it only grow if you select growth?

Also, I don't really understand how dominion spreads. First it says

>The chance of your dominion increasing in a province or spreading to an adjacent province partly depends on your god's initial dominion, which you specified when you created your pretender. The chance is 10% multiplied by your god's maximum dominion.

But then it says:

>If the dominion in the province is neutral, dominion increases to +1 automatically.

>If the province contains friendly dominion, the chance for it to increase by one is 30% minus (3% multiplied by the current friendly dominion in that province).

>If the dominion isn't increased in the
current province the dominion spread will go to a random neighboring province.

>If the province contains enemy dominion, the chance for you to reduce it by one is 50% plus (your maximum dominion strength times 5%) minus (current enemy dominion in the province times 5%).

So if you're dominion is 6, the province dominion is 1 in your favor, and its your territory, does this mean you get 1 temple check (for home province) with a 60% chances of having a 27% chance of increasing your dominion?

If this is the way it works then

A) Those seem like really long odds, even stacked to the ceiling with temple checks.
B) Having a to check for a temple check seems really redundant and unnecessary.
>>
>>150666534
That's not me, and I'm mostly land nations, asside from blitzes, which had a streak of EA R'lyeh for testing purposes.

>>
>>150668113

>>150668297
>oh, you mean the apostrophy.

>>
>>150667026
Population only grows if you have growth scales. It's a bit odd.

>So if you're dominion is 6, the province dominion is 1 in your favor, and its your territory, does this mean you get 1 temple check (for home province) with a 60% chances of having a 27% chance of increasing your dominion?
First thing to note is that there's been a recent change in how dominion is handled.

It's now 50% + 5% per candle on temple checks, rather than 10% per candle. So dom6 would have an 80% chance rather than a 60% chance.

Secondly, if you fail the 27% chance the candle doesn't disappear, it goes somewhere else. So you're still increasing dominion somewhere, just not in the province where the temple was built. If you grab 10 dom (100% chance of temple check succeeding) in a practice game, you'll notice that the candle will always go somewhere, it's just most likely to move into a province without candles (or an enemy province).
>>
>>150668527
>>150668570
its okay if you don't understand it.
>>
>>150667026
To actually answer the question: the first check is to see if you get a candle going at all. The second check is to see where it goes. If you fail the second, low chance check, the candle doesn't disappear unless it hits the enemy dominion.
>>
>>150668589
"Your" versus "you're" is not a matter of when to use apostrophes. It's a matter of knowing when to use a verb, and when to connote possession.

Ur is Pangaea with bad troops, which makes them pretty terrible. Oh, and they have recruitable low level E/D mages and one with an E2/A2 random, which would be nice if they actually had anyone capable of casting storm, which they don't.

Atlantis has problems with having a decent labrat in EA, slightly less so in MA and they're actually fairly decent in LA. Oceania is just underwater Pan, which also makes them bad.

You know the only reason english is "easy" to learn is because of its exposure through media, right?

Had it not been the global language, frequently found in movies and the internet, it would've been hell to learn by foreigners. It's one of the biggest languages(with dozen loanwords from other languages) and it has some really retarded exceptions and rules which you have no choice but to learn by heart.

And let's not bring up the genius idea of giving every single group of animals a different name.

I am Swedish and for me English was very easy to learn. Most English words have either a Germanic or Latin root, which is good. Also the grammar is very, very simple compared to any other Germanic or Latin language, and perfection compared to Slavic or Finn-Ugric languages.

Yes, there are many weird exceptions with the grammar but that is true for almost all languages.

Latin is one of the most logical and easiest to learn languages. 99% of things are spelled the way they're written, with very few exceptions such as "q". (which is read as 'cv', Aqua for example being spelled as ak-va and not Ak-wua)
>>
>>150719403
That has absolutely nothing to do with grammar.

English is simple as fuck. If it's one rose it's "rose", if it's two roses it's "roses". You don't have to learn twenty different words just to say "rose". You don't have to think about the role of the rose in the sentence, you don't have to think about the gender of the word rose, you don't have to think about whether or not rose is one of those word that just throws the rulebook out of the window, etc. It's just a rose.

I don't really get where you're going with this, which languages are you talking about exactly? Because mine is latin-based and we also have two words for it ,"trandafir" and "trandifiri" notice the "i" at the end to denote male-gender multiple. For female gendered words we put "e" at the end instead of "i", and that's it, it's not rocket science.

And the simplicity I was talking about is stuff like "na_ti_on" and "_ti_nder". The group of letters "ti" are spelled differently in different words, whereas in latin they will always be spelled the same.

>which languages are you talking about exactly?
Literally any language that makes use of declensions. Latin, Greek, German, Russian, Icelandic, Finnish, and so forth. Sure, not all of them make equally extensive use of it, but in general it's much harder to learn than English, which used to have similar shit but changed to a much simpler system over time. Picture related.

>And the simplicity I was talking
The simplicity you are talking about has absolutely nothing to do with grammar.
>>
>>150719673
>twenty different words just to say "rose".
Declination isn't twenty times the number of words. It's a slight modification to the ending of words, and is very consistent between words in a declension.

>you don't have to think about whether or not rose is one of those word that just throws the rulebook out of the window, etc
English is far more inconsistent than Latin. Just look at the words we have with weird pluralization like goose/geese, fish/fish.

There are 6 cases, there are 7 obsolete cases (still sometimes used in literature), there are 3 genders, and threre are many exceptions that you have to look up in the dictionary.
>>
>>150721445

And grammar part of a word's declaration is not all that defines a language's complexity.

Besides looking through that image I don't see what you're complaining about, english also has
>rose
>roses
>rose's

Only difference is that they also have genders, meaning that some words end with "a" instead of "e" or something.
>>
>>150721028
All of the magic boosters are worth building (with possible exceptions like the 2h Death staff which is really just a Skull Staff in disguise). For the rest, you have to judge them case by case.

Stuff that autocasts good spells is nice, like Sword of Augelmer or Soulstone of Wolves. Mobility options are usually a good choice, like Gatestone or the Flying Ship. Gem generators are a decent choice as well in the long run, as is Draupnir.

Most of the artifact armors are overpriced and not that great compared to non-artifact options, but they're still good if you have plenty of gems and want to give some extra protection to a high-value unit (like a caster that's essential for your battle strategy) or plan on building a ridiculously overpriced SC. Artifact weapons are never really worth it unless they have a good effect besides just being a weapon, but again if you really want to build an overpriced as fuck SC they might be worth considering. I personally don't like items that summon units for you like Carcator or Nethgul, but I suppose they can be situationally useful.
>>
>>150721920

This guy never learnt german.

Depending on the gender, it declinates one or other way.

If you have 3 genders and 6 cases as that guy says, there are probably 18 diferent ways to end a noun.

That's a lot, since you also need to know what's the meaning of the word in the sentence to decide what case are you in.
>>
>>150722202
>and that letter is the same across all same-gendered cases.
This is false because some words ending with "ь" can be masculine, feminine, or gender-neutral. Same goes for ⃠ .

What you do is take a triple major bless imprisoned pret with no scales in a non-summod game and forgo research completely. You empower your first spectator ASAP and then you use him to summon Arch Bishops which you use to freespawn Lictors all game. Triple blessed Lictors along with Knight of the Speculcor wreck anything early game, so you'll be able to not only survive against any amount of people trying to kill you but you'll take a few early caps yourself instead because they just won't have anything to answer your sacreds that early on. What's the "general rules" for scales when designing Pretenders? I'm still learning so I usually play cookie cutter builds off forums but I kinda want to learn how to build one from scratch.

Are these observations correct?
1) Usually to get more points, good places to draw them from 1/2 points of Misfortune or Drain, but never 3 because they get really drastic.

I heard that picking both of them together gets you random events that steal your gems - are they relevant enough to discourage doing so?

2) On the flip side - Luck + Magic scales is supposed to give you random gem events, but is it competitively viable?

3) You can also grab points by adjusting the temperature scale towards Hot or Cold (is there any difference in which direction you send it in?)

4) Growth > Order/Production if you had to pick only one of the three? These are the ones I am most confused by since how do you tell which one is the best to raise for your nation?

For example, MA Ulm can go with a Tiwaz of war with at least A4E4F4, which are all paths that Ulm naturally has access to anyway but has some trouble getting high levels of, and the tiwaz can cast all the high level combat spells, rituals, and forge all the boosters from those paths. The other option is to take a rainbow with paths Ulm doesn't have access to if you want more magic diversity, and more diversity is something that Ulm really wants if the game goes late.

Sloth, Turmoil, Drain and temperature scales can be good dump scales. More that 1 Misfortune can get extremely annoying without fortune teller mages or order 3, so it's not really recommended. The thing to avoid is drain and misfortune since the events that lead to your gems disappearing are pretty bad and you don't want to happen at all.
Luck and magic can be taken, but it's best on nations that want a lot of gems and can spend them easily like MA Agartha.
The main thing about temperature scales is that fire magic/effects like heat are weaker in cold dominion and vice versa, rivers are impassable in hot dominion but can be crossed when they're frozen over (can be useful on maps with a lot of water crossings). Also, you don't get points for going more than three temperature scales away from your nation's preferred temperature, so something like C3 on Abysia is pointless.
Growth is better after 24 turns for income than Order and is the best income scale usually, there's a table for income scales in the OP in the last link. Production is usually only needed if you need the extra resources.
>>
>>150728038
Designing a good scales build from scratch requires good knowledge of the nation you're playing. For example, Growth is good for everyone (ignoring exceptions like MA Ermor), but not everyone actually needs it. Growth is great for your long-term income, but if you have to give up Growth scales in order to, for example, get a better bless, it could easily be worth it if it means you'll have much better expansion or you'll be able to secure an easy victory in an early war, because things like that have a much more significant impact on your ingame performance. Most people choose to stay well away from Death scales, but they can be worth it if you're fast enough to outrun your candles, or simply control the spread carefully.

The same goes for Order, but with Order you also have to think about whether you have a better than average reason to keep unrest down, which is why most Blood nations choose to run O3 if possible.

Production depends almost entirely on how resource-hungry your recruitable troops are. If your troops are relatively expensive in gold and/or cheap in resources, it can be a no-brainer to get Sloth 2 or 3, while for example nations that rely on heavy infantry will take at least Prod 1 almost all of the time.

Temperature is a bit of a no-brainer most of the time. For neutral nations you want to keep it neutral, for heat nations you'll want Heat 3, and for cold nations you'll want Cold 3, but in some cases it might be worth giving up a few scales here to get more free points. For example, if you have lots of fire mages it can easily be worth to take some Heat scales even as a temperature-neutral nation.

Magic mostly depends on your mages. If your researchers are cheap but have low research values, M3 can give you a lot of bang for your buck, while nations that will spend most of their time recruiting expensive, high-path mages don't suffer as much from Drain, making it a more attractive choice. Of course, some nations ignore Drain entirely.

>It depends
From now on, each time I'll read this in this thread, I'll shout at my computer.
>on your nation and how you want to play it
My pretender how spends most of the game in the capital, either researching, forging items, or looking for sites.
I used to use it as general, but I painfully learned that heroes in Dominions 4 aren't all powerful like they are in Warcraft 3 or Battle Realms.

Let's just say I'm going for a support pretender. I should pick nature for the regeneration blessing, and Death/Earth to build boosters for my mages, right?

Luck is perhaps the most "it depends" scale there is. It's not a very efficient scale on its own, but has great synergy with Turmoil and having high Order makes one or two Misfortune scales much less of an issue. Luck also has the most interaction with other scales, famously Luck/Magic and Misfortune/Drain can lead to some great/awful events, respectively, but also some less intuitive combos like Luck/Order can give good results.

i see 3 moments: expansion phase, first war ( turn 12-25, depending on how early you want to start), lategame.
Looking at my nation i decide if something needs to be improved, doesn't need help, or can be bet on for great reward and i design a pretender based around that. Sometimes you have a pretender that helps 2 or 3 of those moments instead of only one.

the "scale style" is order3 + misfortune 1-2 that costs more points VS Turmoil 3, luck3 and possibly some magic to make gems fall.If you want an heavier bless turmoil luck is a way to grab some points, but you would prefer to choose based on "how good are my gold-based mages VS my national summons".

I actually begin pretender Design from production scales/expansion bless and choosing if i want an awake god.Because nothing matters if i can't expand as much as i want.

>>
>>150728885
Well, it's true. The actual effect of Luck depends on many factors, including ACTUAL luck (if you take Luck 3 you can still get unlucky and never get any of the great events, or even get lots of bad events since the overall chance of events occuring (good or bad) is increased).

It's hard to say if Luck is objectively good or bad, just that it's obviously better than Misfortune and that in most cases it's not an efficient scale to take unless you're willing to bet 120 design points on getting more gems.
>>
>>150728763
N9 is a good general purpose bless but you really want sacreds that synergize well with it, or are intending to make a lot of shrouds to put on golems or something. If you're still talking about C'tis, they don't have any sacreds worth putting N9 on (unless it's LA), but they can use some earth and death magic. D6 is enough to cast the majority of death magic spells and forge every booster, so you don't want to take more than that most of the time, if you don't care about the D9 bless (which isn't that great anyway). E6 is enough to cast every earth spell in the game, but you might have a bit of trouble getting enough earth gems to really make use of it.
>>
>>150729227
Well, only the Sacred Snakes, I think. Unless there are sacred summons.

>>
>>150729683

>>
>>150729709
It does add up, but for example compared to O3 or G3, L3 doesn't bring in nearly as much gold in the long run. It doesn't get even remotely interesting until you start working the synergy, for example T3G3L3 which is reasonably common, or even O3G3L3 which I've seen more than once, but that's quite a lot of points which might keep you from getting the bless you want. In general, taking Luck for gold is very much not worth it. For gems, it could be worth it because there are no scales that directly influence gem income, so for a nation that relies heavily on summons, L3M3 (whether combined with Turmoil or not) might very well be a worthwhile if somewhat unreliable option. Of course this goes double for nations that have a good reason to get Turmoil (like Lanka or Yomi), since you'll usually want Luck just to take the edge off of Turmoil anyway.
>>
>>150730063
>taking Luck for gold is very much not worth it

Oh certainly but you never take it for raw gold. It gives gems and the odd item, which is sometimes nice sometimes trinket level shit. It really does give a lot of gems over the course of a game. I've sometimes managed to get enough free slaves to empower someone and break into blood for instance.
>>
>>150730063

The place Turmoil Luck starts getting interesting is in disciple games.

With a sufficiently large team, you've enough provinces and domspread that it becomes less of a crapshoot and more of the one guy who did get the 2000 gold event passing to teammates as need. Similarly non-native gem granting events can go to nations that can use those gems.

In freeforall, it's more a matter of your personal luck on whether you get the events you want early or late or not at all.
>>
>>150728038
I like taking misfortune if I'm fishing for points, but it can get tough if you're hit by bad events ove and over again in game. I don't think I would ever take drain unless I'm playing a nation where mages can ignore drain scales, or maybe one with high research that doesn't get hampered too much by it. Thieves stealing your gems feels really bad, it's not bound to happen, but when it does it sucks for sure. Though if you're picking both misfortune and drain you are probably not on the right path to design your pretender.
Luck and magic can give you a lot, but as always it depends, it's random events so you might see them, but you may also not witness your gem treasury getting filled. It's just like gold events, it's cool when it happens, but your strategy shouldn't rely on those.
For hot and cold the points depends on what the base scale is for your nation. Adjust as you see fit (never forget exceptions though) to cross mountains or rivers, or to get more points at creation. Look at whose playing with you : getting cold with frost giants on the board isn't the best bet, getting hot with abysia and c'tis can also hamper you. That is, if you start near a nation which is comfortable in cold or heat. Also check what your units and commanders want, it's bad to end up with more encumbrance because you went full temperature scales.
If I had to pick one of those three it would probably be order. Growth is nice for almost everyone but it's not the one you always want, production depends on whether you need ressources and order brings you unrest reduction on top of gold, so two important things.

Keep in mind that you can test your builds in single player, submit them here to get destroyed by our local experts, and that you should get a pretender build that makes you comfortable and is in phase with your game plan. If you don't feel it, ask for help or try again.

Some nations can definitely take it. For example, taking Heat 3 on Marignon or isn't that bad since they use lots of fire magic, or Agartha since their shit is cold-blooded (which sucks in winter with neutral scales) and their mages use fire as well, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it as some sort of default dump scale, especially if there's a good risk you'll be facing a nation who actually likes those scales. For example, being Marverni and taking Cold scales when Niefelheim is in the game is probably not a good idea at all.

>English is almost impossible to master compared for non native speakers as a large majority of meaning of words depends on context and cultural understanding.
The same is true for pretty much every single language there is. Language and culture are always deeply connected, which is part of the reason why the same language spoken in different cultures will be spoken in a different way. Pretending that makes English special somehow is completely retarded, and the difference between learning a language for conversational purposes or some arbitrary "mastery" of the language (which by any reasonable standard not even most native speakers can claim) is massive.

>On top of that we have several letters and sounds that are incredibly hard to pronounce.
First, that's hardly a unique feature of the English langauge. Second, the difficulty of pronouncing words is such a subjective standard to judge a language by that it's entirely pointless anyway, because it both depends on your mother tongue and is highly mutable from region to region even if the language itself doesn't change.

>Warmongers
Preposterous!

Who's the one fielding those monstrous abominations known as Living Pillars? Who's the one that spoke with glee about a mere PITTANCE of those foul beasts slaughtering the noble Amber Guard? Who's the one who retreated from their expansion up to the gates of the Pelagian cap circle because he "needed to resupply"?

Atlantis has been engaged in a reckless arms race from turn one. They're not interest in cooperation or truces; they merely want more and more of their double-blessed rushers so they can crush us all. When my scouts discovered that Atlantis had mobilized over FORTY of the creatures, I gave the order to swim.

What other choice did we possibly have?

It already requires 10 units to merely SCRATCH one Living Pillar so what will happen when they add in mage support? How about a few fat bonuses from the abundance of thrones in Atlantian territory? The idea terrifies our researchers and it should horrify all of us.

Atlantis CHOSE this outcome, and before long, the unified armies of Pelagia and R'lyeh will knock down that Basalt embarrassment that those terrible beasts crawl out from. It's only fair that we give our steadfast ally, Oceania, a chance to join the right side of history.

>>150738316

Everybody wants to make the claim that they are bi-lingual. It is one of the most exaggerated statistics in the world, because anybody who can speak a few words in their native tongue thinks they are capable of holding a conversation at length with somebody who is a native speaker.

The truth is, most people who claim to be bi-lingual aren't really bi-lingual at all.
>>
>>150745773
If by learning a language you mean anything that's sufficient to hold a decent conversation, pretty much everyone itt who isn't a native English speaker would quality as bilingual.

Native speaker here. I use the ones in bold plus "mob" and "murder". I am aware of this use of "plump" and "clutch", though I would think of "clutch" as specifically referring to hens and don't actually use either as my preferred term. Those two, in addition to the others that I didn't mention, I refer to as a "bunch". This term can be used regardless of species, as well as for non-animals.

Also, I'm a biologist and natural educator, well versed in beasts of the world, and I don't know what a capercaillie, capon, chough, curlew, dotterel, or dunlin is, and I have only the vaguest notion that a coot is a bird. So this shit is clearly far from what you need to know as a learner of the language.

>>150710664
English pronunciation is very forgiving though, once you get down to the details the "correct" version is often not agreed upon even by English speakers. There are some hard words, but just giving a good try at it is generally good enough for functional purposes.

>>150711952
English is easy only because it's so hard that there isn't any single reasonable standard that people are expected to meet, so you're considered to know the language just by being able to more or less communicate.
>>
>>150719673
>You don't have to learn twenty different words just to say "rose".
Well, there's lots of taxonomy and species and shit, but if you mean declension/conjugation: This is true only in the most abstract sense. Word endings that are consistent across many words aren't that big of a difference, and in English you have to learn a shit-ton of syntactic words that are generally very confusing to non-native speakers. You're learning a comparable amount of morphemes.
>You don't have to think about the role of the rose in the sentence,
Not here, but pronouns are all kinds of fucked in that regard.
>you don't have to think about the gender of the word rose,
Literally a one letter difference, which is consistent all over.
>you don't have to think about whether or not rose is one of those word that just throws the rulebook out of the window, etc.
Yes you do. In the case of "rose", it's not, but that's one of the things you need to think about.

"ti" isn't a group of letters in either of those words. It's "na.tion" and "tin.der" The problem there is that nobody really teaches English syllabication, which you kind of need in order to learn English reading accurately. Of course, even then, "tion" is usually considered a sight syllable, which you have to just memorize.

It is a group of letters. Any letters together qualify as a "group of letters". Notice that I didn't use "syllable" for a reason.

Anyway that's not the main point, the idea is that letters are spelled differently depending on different context which you have to memorize. If someone were to invent some new words and write them down, they'd have to also tell everyone else how they're spelled. That isn't the case with latin, even if you've never heard of a word before, you would know how to spell it (assuming it's a latin word) if you knew latin, no additional case-by-case memorizing. Letters are always spelled the same.

While technically true, this is still a fucking stupid thing to say. Most languages are spoken by only one culture, so there's only one set of things to learn. English is spoken by a fuckton of different cultures, so this fact matters more here.

>>150742980
He said "whereas", which a native speaker generally doesn't.

>>150743198
A native speaker would have omitted the "that"; it's often just implied by context and this would be one of those times. Including it sounds overly formal and thus somewhat cold, which is a odds with the use of slang like "triggers". But honestly, if I hadn't looked, I wouldn't have been able to tell your English wasn't native anyway.

There are rules that apply to the vast majority of cases. Yes, there's like twenty of them, and yes, most teachers are still making use of ancient pedagogy that ignores this, but that doesn't mean that the rules don't exist.

how to win with EA snow Caelum? besides to play a different nation
>>
>>150799251
EA Caelum is very strong, actually. Don't be dumb.

You have good expansion, the best raiding potential in the game, mages with excellent paths and a cap-only who can cast all the air buffs in the game without boosters. You have summons which give you 100% diversity if you invest into them, or otherwise provide some fantastic crosspaths for buffing and battlemagic.

The key is to not get into a direct fight. If you're trying to clash doomstacks, you're going to get shit on because while Caelum's units have a good alpha strike, they have little in the way of durability.

You can actually skelespam pretty well with Harabs, for reference. Not as well as dedicated death nations, but combined with air evocations and such, it can be a reasonably strategy.

The_Birds_original_poster.jpg

>>150799251
You have unrivalled strategic mobility. With some planning, you can conquer all enemy provinces in a turn, pretty much, and very few nations can even hope to stand against Caelum in a raiding game. They might go straight to the killing blow by assaulting your forts but after conquering a dozen or more provinces in one turn, Caelum can then unite their entire force in a single province and have advantage in numbers. It's not really a problem to mobilize even their research mages since they can return immediately (or continue researching in another fort in case you're defending a siege).

They expand well. With lance-wielding caelians now having a charge bonus (that was changed in one of the earlier Dom4 patches but Caelum still seems to have a stigma of having crap troops and having to rely on mammoths), they can make a devastating first strike that often routs indie provinces turn 1, and thanks to flying, they can aim for choke points and other desirable provinces immediately with each new expansion party deployed instantly.

They are the premier air nation. Thunder Strike spam comes to you early (before turn 20 depending on how good research you've had: your research mages are good and you can construct owl quills en masse), far earlier than the counters. And then there's a number of other tactics ranging from Fog Warriors to Air Elemental Spam and Rain of Stones.

If you design your pretender around it, you'll get complete diversity from national Spenta and Daeva summons, which increases your strategical and tactical diversity from doing all things air extremely well (which isn't exactly bad either, air is a strong path).

Of course, Caelum does have a number of weaknesses (for example, despite their mobility, your troops are pretty much crap in a straight-up fight and don't do a good job in blocking for your mages either without Fog Warriors) but it's hardly a bad nation. EA Caelum is a great nation, one of the stronger ones in its age.
>>
>>150804049
>unrivaled strategic mobility

Must be nice, living in the pre Xibalba era.
>>
>>150799251
There's no guaranteed way to win, but this is my general gameplan as Caelum.

Early game, expand with either mammoths or spire horn warriors.

For early magic aim for thunderstrike/storm/summon stormpower, in that order. Your troops are poor so you'll be relying heavily on thunderstrike to kill things. You can use air gems to let an A2 mage cast thunderstrike if you don't yet have storm and stormpower available.

Midgame branch out a bit into other research. I like conjuration for air elementals. Living Air is amazing, and your cap-only mages are great for casting it. Alteration is also good, for Fog Warriors. This is probably the point in the game when you're strongest, so make good use of it.

For lategame you'll want to break into the paths you don't have natively, and probably get some high-end summons going. Caelum's unique national D/F summons are quite nice and can lead to a tart factory. At this point of the game you're likely to start getting outmatched by blood nations, if any have survived. You'll have a very good chance against anything else.

>>150802471
>the best raiding potential in the game
I'd say that goes to Xibalba. Birds are pretty high up there though.

>If you're trying to clash doomstacks, you're going to get shit on because while Caelum's units have a good alpha strike, they have little in the way of durability.
In midgame you can usually stand a good chance in a direct fight. Fog Warriors makes your crappy troops very hard to kill, and in the meantime your mages are raining down thunderstrikes. Air elementals are also something which your enemies may not have a good answer to.

There's no reason to give an enemy a fair fight when you can just steal all the provinces from behind them, but sometimes it's easier not to have to deal with a big stack of troops rampaging through your land.

Most of the youtube stuff is people playing against the AI. In games against other players the game gets very active and competitive after a bit. And while the game looks simple it has the potential to get apocalyptically big and complex compared to what's going on at the start.

>>150813495
What are you trying to ask here? Try again.

Regular research value is calculated from a unit's magic paths. Adept Researcher is bonus research ability on top of paths for the sake of letting illwinter put research specialist units into the game without having to give them all awesome paths.

In the inspector? Yes, it is included. A 1 path mage has base 7 RP always. Inept research / Adept researcher are the only things other than path that change the value of research.
>>
>>150814294
Yes. Sage would naturally get 7 Research from his 1 point of Astral. His adept research bonus of 8 pushes him to 15.

Same with inept researcher mages. They would have ~8 usually but the inept researcher trait knocks them down by 4, leading to the number they get.
>>
>>150814415
Alright thanks, I've been wondering if it would have 23 research after recruiting him.

What's the best Conjuration 3 summons for an UW nation? Lesser Water Element? Are cave cows good for anything considering their crossed paths and specific conditions for summoning?
>>
>>150799251
i won a game with caelum and i am leading another so i feel like i can gve you my opinion.

you don't need a bless, you don't need an awake. you need an imprisoned pretender who can summon your national mages. D2 F1(need boosters) or upto D3 F2 gives you the death ones.S3 or S4 gives you the astral ones.
astral ones are better, but you lack an astral gem income and you have a *chance* to break into astral 3 with one of the death summons, the opposite isn't true.
other good paths would be E2, N2 or 3, E 2 + B1, for crafting boosters. i usually get the with trades.maximum scales, don't trust luck with order.

you can expand with mammoths ( recruit arya seraphine and scout ping each province and then fix their starting position to be perfectly in time to do a LONG trample on turn 3, then hold and attack with your fliers will come. i don't remember how you could choose squad moving order, but there was a reliable way,so test it). i did it with 2 sometimes 1 mammoths per squad, mixed with 3-4 meele units to not make them route. or just a big group of spire horn warriors/raptorian warriors, hold and attack rear, sometimes need one arrow catcher in front. archers can be useful against barbarians but i honestly don't think they are good for general expansion.

at the end of expansion and for your first war recruit only troops that can fly during storm.
you probably want to kill mammoths after expansion.Your first research target is construction 2 for maximum owl quills.
turn 18-19 you should attack a bunch of enemy provinces with small squads of birds, possibly killing the PD of his cap.scouting is useful too.Next turn you come with ALL your air 2 mages and one or more Eagle kings.Storm->summon storm power->thunderstrike->hold and attack rear/closest with your birds.Arrw fend and Wind guide ( mass aim) are your next target, then you are free to recruit harabs for horde of skeleton, parting of the soul, eventually rain of stones.
>>
>>150813495
yes it does include it.
it doesn't include however random magical paths that are not 100% likely to happen as far as i know.

girdle of might, frost brand, maybe barskin amulet.
he can easily die against elite units/crossbows without additional base protection or more defense/ethereal; unfortunately they cost 10 gems to make. 20 protection is very low.
with no resistences, low hp, defense based, and 14 MR i can see it working only against PD, although alongside an army if you can spare 2 buffs on him and avoid evocation raining on him it can do a nice job.

What the fuck did you just fucking do to me, you little elf? I’ll have you know I was designed as the top Super Combatant in the Pretender Design Screen, and I’ve been defending against numerous secret raids by the Vanheim, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in thug warfare and I’m the top buffer in our entire nation. You are nothing to me but just some chaff. I will wipe you the fuck out with gear the like of which are the standard thug setup, mark my fucking paths. You think you can glamour away after trying to fuck me up with "anonymous" rituals? Think again, ponyfucker. In the same turn I send this message I am rearranging my network of scouts across the map and your Pretender's current provinceid is being traced right now by Dome of Flaming Death so you better prepare for the fire, maggot. The fire that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your research camp.

You’re fucking domkilled, kid. You can be anywhere, anytime, but I can kill your chaff in over three ways, and that’s just with my attacks. Not only am I extensively trained in armed combat, but I have access to the entire spell arsenal of my nation and I will use the handful of useful spells to rout your miserable ass off the battlefield, you little scrub. If only you would have scouted or pretender description meta'd what holy retribution your little “clever” surprise raid was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have kept your fucking ponymen hidden. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’ve lost the gold, you goddamn idiot. I will Growing Fury all over you and you will rout from it. You’re fucking longdead, Legolas.

bats are spam happy too because hey are fliers and rely on number to win.

non flying non ranged units will always be limited by walls and the lenght of the battle front, so adding 500 more just makes the battle longer and the enemy mages just need to find the right big aoe spell to win.

PROVINCES
top 5 : Ryley, Oceania, Abysia, Sauromatia, Pelagia
low 5 : Frost giants, Kailasa, Agartha, Yomi.

FORTS
top 5 : Ryley, Sauromatia, Maverni, C'tis, Pangaea, Caelum.
low 5 : Mitclan, Frost giants, Bats, Yomi
Though lots of you are low on forts, compared to the top and middle.

INCOME
top 5 : Ryley, Oceania, Sauromatia, Pelagia, TNN
low 5 : Agartha, C'tis, Frost giants, Lanka, Yomi

TROOPS

Mound King is 40 standard leadership for 3 death gems, Sleeper is 100 leadership for 10 nature gems. For nature gems, Fairy Court is pretty cool especially if you have no Air Access. You could also get a Vine King and use it to summon lots of Vine Ogres, which are decent blockers/evocatchers. Of course, making sure your army has plenty of supply items is a good idea as well.

For water, I like having lots of Bottles of Living Water. If you give a bunch to your mages it not only provides some extra units in battle, but it's also excellent protection against assassins.
>>
>>150860069
You do one or the other

Stick into a thug chassis.

Any of the water ladies. Naiads and lamias. The actual Naiad caster can't leave their province for a prolonged time though and the low HP high Awe is difficult to utilise.

Water Bottles. Water elemental spamming. 20 size 6 water elementals in a critical battle is better than a couple of """permanent""" low level water summons.

If you need upkeepless chaff make ivy crowns and summon scores of ivy men with N1. If you are far enough Fairy Court, Vine king and Vine Ogres. Stick the Vine Ogres apart from each other and other troops. If the research is in the stage where the enemy has battlefield cancer the vinemen aren't immune to forget about it.

If you have a unit with multiple attacks that kills a unit on its first attack will it attack adjacent enemies? Or are the remaining attacks wasted?
>>
>>150862956

>>
>>150862956
It will attack different enemies in the same square, but not outside of it.
>>
>>150862956

Units will only attack one square on a given turn, regardless of how many attacks they have. If you have three skeletons in a single square, a guy with three attacks can kill all of them in a single turn. If you have three skeletons in adjacent squares, he can only kill one per turn.
>>
>>150863407
You either have skeletons in a square or you don't. You can't just say you have one-third skeletons of a square.
>>
>>150863584
I'll explain it to you, but first we have to talk about parallel universes.
>>
>>150863584

It was for the sake of example. You can't put one per square as a formation, sure, but with casualties, it can be reduced to that.

The point is, regardless how many attacks a dude has, he can only attack one square per turn.
>>
>>150863407
You are not exactly right. If the unit is under the quickness, so he can use his set of attacks two or more times, it can attack with the seccond set of his attacks the second square, but only if the 1st sqare he attacked is empty.

Is it fair to say that, by the end of your expansion phase, you can measure your success decently accurately by taking the province per player number and seeing if you are above or below it? Generally, players will average out to that, so having more than that should mean you're better off than the average player, yes?
>>
Hey Agartha, you were about to stale so I extended the timer 'cause our war and all. Could you reply to this if 5 hours isn't enough.
>>
>>150864761
On average, yes. Though if you're a nation with great expansion potential and you end up with just an "average" number of provinces, that's still shitty.
>>
>>150864761
Actually it depends whether you are median aligned in the graphs. You see, the invidual provinces vary greatly and while you might have more provinces than two thirds of the players the remaining third may have disproportaneously more provinces. Stalers and people failing their expansion horribly skew the mean average.
>>
>>150864761

>All units rush into melee and not a single one tries to fire or gain distance

I then got told that if a single member is in melee range the rest of the squad will engage in melee range. Even when ordered to keep distance and fire.

>>
>>150881760
Just make more squads you little faggot.
>>
>>150881939

Fighting with the games own AI is retarded. The idea that commanding troops to keep distance will make them engage in melee range is retarded.

But ya sure, make more squads. Then just ignore the fact that the AI is broken.

Here's another good one. Squad set to fire. people enter melee range. The units that aren't in melee range that still have ammo? They rush into melee instead of firing. Broken.

I bet there is a shit ton of examples of broken AI in this game besides that, but still.
>>
>>150881667
Guard commander + a commander with 5XHold + attack would work for holding them back more
>>
>>150882241
Dealing with the retarded AI is part of the game

It's not a good part, but everybody has to deal with the same bullshit.
>>
>>150882241
It's based on classical warfare, that despite things like Total War relied on very simple orders, and following what your squad was doing.

So though it is frustrating, the bit of the AI that's broken is it's spellcasting priorities.
>>
Here's another thing.

Tactics don't even seem to matter at all. Just how well you know how to take advantage of the AI compared to other players. Do you know the exact mechanics of the AI, even though none of it is listed? Do you know if X spell calls for MR checks or not even though that's not listed?

The mod inspector helps with some of it, but broken AI is just broken. I wonder what other examples of weird ass command bugs there are.
>>
>>150882716
I can't think of any spell that calls for MR that has not got it listed in the inspector
>>
>>150882291
Yah, but then I need a commander who doesn't die easy and I also can't have them in line formation =/
>>
>>150882887

I actually meant in game it doesn't tell you. Which means you gotta constantly check a website for even basic information. Which while lame isn't a deal breaker.

However, setting up unit orders and having them not follow it is DUMB.

Another thing that's dumb is how you can't script a commander that's being assassinated. Oh wow you know there is an assassin or might be one around? Lol think of something else besides telling the unit to run away or like... cast a certain spell.

There is too much broken shit about this game to make it fun. I'd ask for a refund but I've hosted so many games that I never played that I'm way over the two hours.
>>
>>150883567
>broken shit
Dominions is a slow game featuring a huge amount of things interacting with each other in different ways. Checking a website or the manual is mandatory, but once you stop being a shitter and learn what does what you rely less on the inspector and more on your experience and knowledge.
The battle AI isn't good, but everyone gets the same, and if you learn to script properly at least during the first few turns of fighting you should be fine.
As for assassinations, the system works fine. The target is surprised and doesn't make use of its full capabilities.
All in all, scripting orders and spells could be better, but it's an essential part of the game to not control everything that happens during battles.

Eyup, there's only one logical explanation for this phenomenon. What we have here, people, is a MOBA player. DotA, League of Legends or that Blizzard thing whatever you call it. This guy has played at least one of them. Absolutely disgusting.
>>
Also it seems to me that everyone who actually plays this game knows how shit the AI is. And how bad the information is that it gives you. They've just decided that, you know, even though parts of the game are broken they're willing to work around it.

I don't see how it's that shocking that someone DOESN'T want to put up with that.

Cuz it's weird to agree with me about things being broken or "bad" or whatever and then say "Well, that's the way the game is/should be".

It's just shitty cuz I don't know how I could have known these AI issues in the two hours that steam offers.

None of this shit came up while playing with friends. But 1v1's in this game are really shitty. I've only done two of those tho. One on a map that was way too big and one on a small map. Both of those were fun to dick around on tho.

>Tactics and unit positioning are very important. You shouldn't write off tactics just because your particular tactic did not work out.

I guess it's more that "tactics" seem to be taking advantage of broken mechanics. Like. It's not a tactic to use multiple squads to deal with AI issues. That's just working around broken shit.

It's also not tactics when you do something that breaks the AI and renders the target useless. Like. If I had an ice mage giant with a big ass sword? But you were immune to ice? And the ice dude kept casting ice spells at you instead of using his big ass sword? That's not you being good, that's the game being bad. Not the player.

When we're saying the AI is shit, it's shit at macro level tactics, and knowing how to use the multitude of spells/so such. It's not that the fundamental player used AI is broken.

It would make certain tactics useless I guess. Like skelle spam or whatever the fuck. It'd be damn near impossible to kill flying or teleporting mage commanders.

But I don't think it'd be broken at ALL. In fact, wasn't dom 3 or some shit like that? Been ages since I played that game.

It would also stop the game from being full on retarded. The AI is too dumb to act in any logical fashion against an assassin. And the idea that it somehow "makes sense" that a mage wouldn't just... teleport away from one is the silliest thing in the world.

"I GOT CAUGHT BY SURPRISE. TIME TO... NOT RUN AWAY YA."

I think there is a word for what I did. Hyperbole? Something like that. There aren't even thousands of posts in this thread. Just dudes admitting the AI is bad. And by bad, I mean broken.

I don't see why I had to explain that, but you didn't understand it, so there you go.

What I don't understand is why some third world favela dweller is complaining that he didn't get enough joy out of his FIVE DOLLAR VIDEOGAME because he kept on LOSING because he's SHIT at the game ON MY AGARTHAN CAVE DRAWING EXCHANGE REFERENDUM

Like HOLY SHIT how fucking ASSMAD can you get that you lost FIVE DOLLARS paying for a game that is TOO HARD for your inferior subhuman brain to handle?

"B-B-BUT THE GAME IS BROKEN WAH WAH WAH" No it ISN'T you are just T-R-A-S-H at it.

I bet you complain when someone checkmates you in chess because "WAH IT'S NOT BALANCED THAT YOUR HORSEMAN CAN JUMP OVER MY PAWN THIS AI IS SHIT WHY WON'T IT LET ME MOVE MY KING TWO SQUARES IT NEVER TOLD ME THAT THE QUEEN'S ATTACKS ARE MAGIC IMMUNITY NEGATING I WANT MY ALLOWANCE BACK WAH WAH WAH"

Like jesus fuck I wrote the fucking BOOK on complaining about Dominions and there is NOTHING wrong with ANY of the shit you are pointing to

People willingly admit the AI is limited when it goes off script, but that's just for mages. The rest works as intended, and it's not Illwinter's fault if you can't script for shit because you're a turboscrub. Mainly it's you who goes with "the AI is broken", but the truth is, the AI has to chose from dozens of spells when mages go off script, and it often not choses the ones we would like to, but the game still works fine. The combat works as intended. And nobody will ever be satisfied with the aforementioned off script point anyway.
Other than that, there's no problem when you learn to make decent, basic scripts for your units. Sometimes shit happens, but its part of life, you're playing a strategy game, not everything can go your way all the time. But clearly you don't get that, and you also don't know how to script.

Lets be real land lubbers, if you guys wanted someone to be top of so many graphs, best have it be R'lyeh. Not like I can actually win or anything.

It has also come to my attention that some people have started a rumor that I like gold. Gentlemen, let me dispel this rumor. I don't like gold. I. Love. Gold.

So I'm not spamming genocide, jeez.

If one scripted for assassinations, I assure you that more mages would die from being scripted to "communion slave" or other more battlefieldy spells than would be saved by the intense micro of trying to script for both one on one fights and mass engagements.

It's not particularly similar to real world tactics, but that is still tactics.

You're setting up your troops in such a way that they have maximum effectiveness in combat.

As other people have said, you're not supposed to have full control over every unit all the time, and your units won't always act optimally. Working around that is one of the factors which makes tactics in this game challenging.

>Like. If I had an ice mage giant with a big ass sword? But you were immune to ice? And the ice dude kept casting ice spells at you instead of using his big ass sword? That's not you being good, that's the game being bad. Not the player.
Mages will not cast spells at targets which cannot be affected. That's already in the game.

I am curious if anyone has any webm's/gifs of effective Super Combatants in action.

I know there are guides for Super Combatants etc., not asking for that necessarily.
