Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

The Virgin Disc map is actually pretty good. Ys is going to be gimped as the game goes on since most of the map is inland, but on the flip side it should have no trouble moving from one lake to the other if it actually does want to put up forts UW (it doesn't) and it should be able to build up a reasonable number of forts on the same coast.

Expansion focus? Just smack shit with your superior troops, fort high resource provinces, and build a mage in every fort.

It's not going to start forging any sooner than you'll actually get construction 6. At that point all the most important provinces should be already covered with sitesearching and the rest can wait or rely on indies/summons.
>>
>>150314845

I'm specifically not using mememod because I don't want to play with mememod.

why would i get an awake? Ulm expansion is really strong but i need different magical paths.

for expansion i like to focus on superlong lancers and building smiths at the same time since they give you additional resources. conquer capcircle first.

this pretender can't craft bloodstone. a big shame perhaps, but you can kickstart yourself to blood one way or the other.
this can sitesearch, can cloud trapeze and fight pretty well, summon tartarians lategame ( no N for global however). will need nature reinvig items.
try to find a province to recruit a N1 mage.

i expect you to do lot of gem and item trading to get what you are missing.

>What is the best way to play Ulm? I want something that is guaranteed to not lose within 10 turns

the only way to lose within 10 turns is to take less than production 3 or get blessrushed by tribless ermor.
MA Ulm is godlike at first and then either midway through his first war or just after it it realizes that has nothing but Earth 4 fire 1 magic.
From a certain point of view you lose turn 1 if you don't think about what you'll need after turn 25.
>>
>>150314915
I highly appreciate that you are not submitting yourself to that stupid fad of liking mememod.
I have joined your game. Let's fight Ermor together.
>>
>>150315341

I picked 1.21 because I hadn't played in a PBEM in a while and it was the one I remember.

What's the difference between it and the newest WH?
>>
>>150316936
the newest WH is liked by anyone who isn't Buttdevasted about one single SC that killed his militia stack.

the old WH would be fine too, but a certain badmin like it a lot so we feel like not trusting any game that runs it because we fear the badmin.
>>
>>150315663
>>150315949
Personally, I like N9B9 because I'm a terrible person. N9 mono is honestly fine, since your statues have 0 fatigue anyways. N9E9 is the more common double bless build, since the prot bonus stacks fully on your already high prot statues. I wouldn't bother with E4, though; either full double or mono with more scales.

It's also possible to play Agartha with no bless whatsoever. While the statues make for a strong frontline, you're still going to be using your mages and other summons (living mercury, green lions, spooks, etc) to do your actual killing. Having more scales for more mages and so on will help you get more firepower onto the field and let you deploy your summons sooner.

MA Agartha is an awesome summon nation in general, even without a reliance on the sacred statues to make an impenetrable wall. Buffed living mercuries, magma children, green lions, and penumbrals are all really cool, and you can spam magma eruption like a less efficient MA Ulm, except with tons of magical creatures instead of just heavy infantry and crossbows. They also have neat tricks like penumbral raiding parties led by a marble warriors caster wearing a shademail.

Having a bless is fine, and the statues and even their cap sacreds are good enough to warrant one, but it's definitely not the only way to play.
>>
>>150317120
>the newest WH is liked by anyone who isn't Buttdevasted about one single SC that killed his militia stack.
The newest WH doesn't add any new SCs. Recent iterations mostly added magey heroes, and the latest two version were attempts to make non-caster heroes cool with stuff like battle-summons and dom-summons on famous generals.
>>
Also when Ohlmann finally gets around to 5.6, it'll have a comprehensive grammar rewrite.
>>
>>150317120
>>150317340

I'm not the badmin you guys fear and am open to fuck around with any of the settings if people want. The only thing I won't do for this particular game is run summod.

>>

Well, honestly I don't know what the source of your problem is. I'm not a mod person at all. What I know is that other people using the same mod run it fine, including the person who received the same .trn as you when they subbed for your arco game. I don't know what the source of your problem is, and it might be that you've done everything right and there's some weird file system thing that's messing up the game's ability to read the right sprite. I just don't think that sum1 or other modders will be able to help you given that it's not a mod problem, barring the potential of them being generally technically competent.

Were they paid to do it? Aside from the negative impact BoT has on bloodhunting, Hinnom's mages wouldn't be that badly affected by it.

EA/LA Xibalba, EA/LA Mictlan, EA Lanka, LA Abysia, LA Marignon are the premier blood nations on count of having recruit-everywhere sub-100g blood hunters (or, in Xibalba's case, just above 100g with blood hunting bonus) and national summons (all but Abysia), LA Ulm also earns a spot with their vampire shenanigans.

Domg cordially invites all interested and interesting couples to attend the fanciest get-down this side of town. Amenities include Summod, OneAge, Chocolate Thrones, Better Arena, and, of course, Worthy Heroes.

This will be a couples dance, so find the special sum1 you get along with the best, because this game will put you to the test, as the inclusion of OneAge enables powerful combos.

To facilitate the synergy of the teams, nations will be claimed on a first come, first serve basis, so don't be afraid of feeling too hot-blooded.

All it takes to sign up is both players post in the thread http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=3036, confirming the team and nations picks. So get on the dance floor and show us your moves!

The game page is located here, and players will be allowed to submit pretenders once their team is confirmed. http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=DomgChocolateBall

Unique demon summons (Ice Devils, Arch Devils, Heliophagi, Demon Lords) are good for everyone if you manage to snatch them before other blood nations do. Mictlan probably is most well-positioned to do that, having all the required crosspaths (FB, WB) natively, but ultimately it's not difficult to empower a fire or water mage in blood so that's not a decisive advantage.

Besides that, one of the things that makes those nations I listed are good in blood is their unique summons. You'll most probably use a number of summons to fulfil different tactical niches but generally speaking Mictlan and Xibalba will be summoning Ozelotls (flying demon jaguars, Mictlan also has a really big national summon in Tlahuelpuchi, blood-sucking assassin-witches), Lanka is big on Dakini (demonic Hindu sky-dancers with A3D1B3), Marignon on Fallen Angels and Ulm on Vampire Lords. Non-national summons depend on what crosspaths you can get and what's useful at the time.

In general, I personally like Mictlan because Aztec-inspired nation feels very thematic and they have extreme blood crosspath diversity on their national mages. Jaguar Warriors (in EA, in LA they get kinda outmatched by plate) also ensure good early game with the same kind of bless that makes Ozelotls fearsome.

How are you supposed to use Sauromancers with EA Ctis?

What spells are good? You can't use darkness (at least not effectively), you can't use rigor mortis.

You need two boosters, so concstruction 6, on a water random sauromancer to cast foul vapors.

Is sleep cloud good? Is panic good?

>>150385573
You will recruit sauromancers in almost every fort, so you'll eventually get at least one +N +W. Your sobek hero also can cast FV.

Sleep cloud is good, as it allows you to amplify skelespam.
>>
>>150385573

Darkness, rigor mortis, just enough troops to hold the line at the start of the battle then skele spam. Sure darkness and rigor fucks you up too but you have a shitton of skeletons on top.

You can also shadow blast I guess.
>>
>>150385573
>Is sleep cloud good?
Actually yes, especially when combined with skelly spam to hold them in place
>>150385573
>Is panic good?
Only in combination with other morale reduction on troops that aren't immune to morale issues outright. Like sleep clouds, your skeletons are immune to it. Terror is better, though, and all your sauromancers can cast that one too so there's no point in using panic.
>You can't use darkness (at least not effectively), you can't use rigor mortis.
Darkness is great when you're spamming enough skeletons to make them do the fighting rather than your soldiers. Rigor mortis does pose problems, though, since your mages are living.
>You need two boosters, so concstruction 6, on a water random sauromancer to cast foul vapors
Or a communion.

The other big spell is shadowblast, which gives you large AoE direct damage. The fact that it's MRN does hurt, but against most enemies, enough targets will fail to make it more than worth its gem cost.

EA C'tis is quite weak, though. I think Sauromatia does whatever you want to do with C'tis significantly better, while having additional distinct advantages, but that's another story.

>>150385753
>rigor mortis
This is kinda dependent on what you're fighting and fielding, because you're heavily reliant on mages that are fatiguing themselves. I'm not at all convinced that this is a default spell for you, even with relief up.
>>
>>150385751
>>150385753
>>150385879
Ok, thanks.
>>
>>150385573

D4 randoms spam the shit out of Horde of Skeletons, S1 randoms communion up using Lizard Shamen to deploy battlefield effects. Rigor Mortis and Darkness are very useful to drop. N and W randoms are a bit less useful unless you can break into earth for Matrices, but can serve as Skelespammers, even if less effectively than the D4s.

The ability to Matrix up random Sauromancers into communions fueled by Lizards is very worthwhile, so going an Imprisoned monument with E6S6 or so and focusing mainly on scales gets you a good minor bless for the communion slaves without being a huge investment in points.
>>
>>150385879
>Or a communion.
It'd be very rare to get a 3D1N1S1W Sauromancer.

Does a mage need to have at least 1S for Crystal Matrix to work?
>>
>>150386073

Nope. Works on everything.
>>
>>150386004
You say D4 are good skele spammers. Do they get less fatigue from spamming D2 spells if they have a higher D level?
>>
>>150386073
No. Which makes them a great way to bring non-S or B mages into a communion.

A neat trick when you're fighting against a nation using lots of undead is to give Crystal Matrices to your priests. Banishment scales amazingly well, so having a bunch of communion'd up priests spamming it wrecks skelly hordes.
>>

>>
>>150386721
Not him, but question about fatigue really is answered in the manual. I highly recommend you reading it.
>>
>>150386374

Spell fatigue generation is whatever it says on the spell description multiplied by 1 / (1 + extra levels above minimum)

So a D2 generates 40 fatigue from Horde of Skeletons, a D3 generates 20, a D4 generates 13, a D5 generates 10. And so on.

But yeah. Read the manual.

All nations are the same with shit troops, actually good troops, mages, and commanders come from sites spread around the map. Basically instead of sites being for gems, they give the ability to recruit troops.

I'm thinking of making a map for the ultimate meme game.

it'll work like this:

all players get a natgen amphibious nation

map will be 7 islands. one large island with provinces that become increasingly better the closer they are to the centre, and then 6 small shitty islands surrounding it that house 2 players each for a total of 12 players

players have to decide whether to make peace with their island buddy so they can rush to the centre of the main island, or if they will try and take the whole starting island for themselves

also all capitals probably get tidal wave'd to oblivion when people start getting evo 9

would any of you join this?

Water nations are absolutely fine, and on that front Ys is still open in case anyone is eager to give them a try.

Also, Agartha and Ulm are still free for you powergaming lot. We only need a few more nations to start (I'd be happy to start with 12 total but I'll wait for a bit and see if we can get 16)
>>
>>150327574

I actually like a lot of the changes I've see in summod, I just wanted to play a vanilla game.

Also I'd like to do my part to make sure that not every single non-natgen game is played with summod, regardless of how good it is.
>>
>>150418517
I'm always up for more natgen shit.

Also was thinking for an eventual disciples natgen game, what about themed batches? Say there are 3 teams, each team gets a batch themed of x nations. So team humanoid gets humans, abysians, etc. team beasts gets foulspawn, halfmen (minotaurs, centaurs) etc. Looking through the natgen there is plenty for at least team human, team beasts, team elves, team birds, etc.

That or we could just do a normal one where the teams get a big batch each to pick.
>>

>>150421514

If you don't consider MA Ulm and Agartha to be among the strongest of their era, I'd like to hear which MA nations you think are higher tier.
>>
>>150426424

Personally the nations that top my MA tier list are Ermor, Ulm, Pan, and Agartha in no particular order, so I don't disagree with Ulm and Agartha's inclusion.
>>
>>150425369
well being able to natively craft all the high astral items is a thing, for starters
>>
>>150426424
Ermor and Pan are the T1 nations. I'd rate Nazca just below them. I'd say that most other MA nations (Ulm, Agartha, Jotunheim, Vanheim, Pelagia, Sceleria, Pythium, Rus) are all fairly close to each other in power, depending on, well, a large number of factors.

Ulm and Agartha can both certainly do well and win games, but they aren't remotely OP.
>>
What makes Pan so strong? Just ubiquitous stealth access? Their battle magic looks pretty, uh, tame. The reveller nerf looks like a huge deal to me, since a buff strat really benefits from having a dense square set to hold and attack
>>

Crystal Matrices only work on priests if they have magic paths (though randoms will count, even if they don't get them).

Honestly I haven't played Nazca pre-nerf (when they were the most OP shit ever), nor have they shown up enough in my MA games for me to say anything one way or the other.

I'd definitely separate Ulm and Agartha from that list you gave (Pythium? I've won a pbem with them but c'mon now), but Jotunheim and Sceleria are not too far off imo.

Every single of their troops is GREAT and has uses, everything is fast and stealthy, they get free spawn if they want, excellent buff paths, can survive with almost no gold, can seduce the mages they dont have opening up new paths, guaranteed expansion, hard to siege, strong both early and super late game, blood access.
>>
>>150427532

>>
>>150428051
Damn, that is high praise.
>>
>>150428354

>>
>>150427532
White centaurs are some of the best sacreds in the game for expansion which can also fuck up a lot of other nation's troops with just a single or duo bless (W9 or W9N9

High quality, stealthy troops with recuperation, high map movement, forest survival and higher than average stats all around. They stick around and gain experience without getting permanently crippled, so recruits stay useful for longer.

Pans are strong mages with good paths for buffing and are recruit anywhere, Pan also has a bit of blood magic to supplement their lategame. Easy access to useful globals like gift of health and mother oak.

A lot of the stronger buffs available to them are battlefield wide (mass protection, army of lead/gold, mass regeneration, Gaia's blessing) and revellers are still extremely cost effective troops, only costing 3 resources means you can get a fuckton of them very quickly.

So, they're strong early, strong in the midgame, and have ways to supplement their lategame with blood magic and the nature summons.

>>150429040
They're undisciplined now. That's actually a pretty huge change, given that the mainstay strat for Pan is putting AoE buffs on them.

>>150428891
>Every single of their troops is GREAT and has uses
I would much rather say that they have great troops (even if their best one was nerfed). You really don't want satyr sneaks, for instance. Solid explanation overall, though.
>>
>>150429068
Ermor?
>>
>>150429364
>>150429417
Yes, I didn't want it since I don't even have my capring and Jotunheim is 1 province away from my capital. But he is also involved in a war I think.

>>150429446
maybe
>>
>>150429417

I meant troops types - centaurs area great archers with longbows and have their uses, centaur warriors are amazing cavalry and have their uses, satyr warriors and revelers have their uses, harpies are pretty amazing too. Guess some subtypes of troops are worse but still quite good.
>>
>>150381565
Can you get in chat?
>>
>>150391865
master of magic is absolutely still worth playing if you have yet to, it's an excellent game
>>
>>150429698
Jotunheim is in Shinu's cap circle and apparently encroaching on Arco. That's pretty huge.
>>
>>150427532
They have strongest sacreds of the era that are particularly adept at expansion, virtually guaranteening them a strong early game and making them immune against attacks by most individual nations.

Their superhuman troops combined with ideal buff paths also allow them to do fine against virtually anything with just their standard battlefield tactics and are difficult to deal with by most other nations without special counters (for example, communions are fairly easy to disrupt if you can kill even a few of the communion slaves, but Pangaea's mages are very durable and difficult to target, and buffed Revelers are extremely resistant against most anti-army counters, even turn 1 RoS/Earthquake requires a degree of commitment because they can survive several casts)

Besides being strong in straight-up fights, they have a lot of other strategical and tactical tricks up their sleeve (ranging from seducer-assassins, recuperation, ability to stealth away from tough situations/reinforce sieged forts/go the elf route and start wars with crippling first strike and making forts unassailable with maenad hordes to being able to survive post-Armageddon endgame with transformed Panii and freespawn).

They are quite straightforward to play so most players can realize their primary strengths to a large extent.

Etc.

There's of course a number of weaknesses as well but Pangaea's strengths are very pronounced and relevant.

As for reveler nerf, while I haven't played Pangaea since, I don't think it affects MA as much as it affects EA. The nice thing about MA is that you have an abundance of E3 random Panii so you don't have to rely on Earthpower for casting the buff spells. It's problematic if you want to buff Wooden Warriors+Strength of Giants multiple times in the early game, but Mass Protection can be reached quite quickly and Rush of Strength is available in endgame such that Weapons of Sharpness remains the only critical buff that needs to be cast before movement
>>
>>150429230

White centaurs are very good, yes. But Pans aren't very cost-effective mages. 305 gold and StR for a 50% E3 is underwhelming, and the N3/4 is mostly useless except between Alt 5 and 7. Until you get Alt 7 you're pretty vulnerable to all kinds of threats. Fire, Air, and Astral being big ones.

E2 Pans are still useful since earth magic is useful in general, and you are going to be going for alteration first since mother oak and a lot of useful buff spells are in there. You're going to be difficult to rush before you get research done since your troop quality is high and you have a lot of stealthy options available to you for raiding enemy provinces/making their lives a pain. Pans wouldn't be nearly as good on other nations (See Ur), but they fit well when all they really need to do is buff troops and throw out a few useful spells.

I would say Pangaea is strong in lategame as well even if it wasn't for their blood access. Communion nations for example fall much harder because they are relatively easy to disrupt. It's not easy to deal with revelers with full buffs.

>>150430670
Oh, and besides being stealthy, Pangaea has strategic mobility second only to bats and birds. I'd argue that's a very major deal, especially when it's augmented by the fact that your top-shelf mages can be recruited throughout your empire and Revelers have such low resource cost that you can raise an army in a single turn wherever you need them.

In exchange, I'll keep the throne, 146, and eventually 150. We'll obviously never attack you for the duration of the game (unless you directly attack us) and be completely open to trading.

Sound like a deal, sweet stuff?

In a thrice-fueled world, it seems wise that we accept your offer of peace eternal, commerce aplenty, and provinces assured.

I needed that province to move my armies to Ulm, you silly squid. This province is literally near my capital, and you're not getting it. Nobody has any illusions about you and your end-game, which is spamming cancerous globals and wishing for armageddon, so just go and get more UW, the map is big.

And if you want to waste your time and raid my coasts, good luck. EA Riley is a famous land nation with powerful troops after all. Would be sad to see you spend all your resources to attack a land nation over a single shitty province when you finally meet Oceania and Pelagia.
>>
>>150501968
I'd reccomrnd bringing your vanheim down there, as I'm coming over with in excess of 300 units. The ownership of that province in non negotiable. But if you like fighting multiple people at once, be my guest.
>>
>>150502328
Well, do it then. I'm not even going to waste too much time fighting you UW because I literally only used it to move UW troops. Gonna be fun seeing you haul 300 of your shit chaff for that single province. Seeing as you already lost 1600 gold worth of Giboleths, I hope it's gonna go well.

I suggest an alternative that will both save you from being irrelevant for the whole game, and save me my time that I would've wasted dealing with you. I will refund you all your lost troops and you'll leave me that province. It's not worth it, m7.
>>

How many tiles away from each other should I make my forts?

As close as possible without overlapping rings?
>>
>>150509531
If you want the most efficient resource distribution, yes.
Some nations just want as many forts as possible, though.
>>
>>150509531
1) At locations you want to protect at all costs (mainly thrones, but great sites can warrant a fort as well).
2) At chokepoints.
3) At high-income provinces (since forts increase the income from that province)
4) Anywhere that's more than 1 square away from the nearest fort
5) Anywhere else.

Having overlapping rings isn't bad in 99% of the cases. Even putting them right next to eachother isn't that bad if you have a good reason to do so, it's just less efficient since you'll lose some potential resources that way.
>>
>>150509531
Domkill/freespawn nations want forts ASAP and as close as possible.

Some nations only need gold and almost no resoruces, so building your fort in your cap circle can be a possibility.

please, for the love of the Pantokrator, fort all your fucking thrones. by mid-lategame they should all have a fort on them, possibly with additional siege power, preferably not a palisade.

Thinking about that race-themed natgen disciplies game, the teams would end up picking from something like:

>humans
Boreal humans, machakans, oriental humans, amazons, advanced humans

>birds
Caelians, Tengu, Zotz

>fishes
Atlantians, Muuch, Ichtyids

>elf
Van, Sidhe

>manlets
Hoburgs, Vaettis

>giants
Avvites, Fomorians

>beastmen
Ogres, halfmen (minotaurs, centaurs, etc), primates, foulspawn

No clue where to put:
Cavemen, lizards, illithids, abysians, skeletons, pale ones

Bats arent birds.

They got wings, bird enough for me to remove on sight. Could just be renamed to "winged assholes team" to appease the bats.

>Squids with the fish. But rethink uw only team it would be major ass.

Nah it would be fine, natgen doesn't generate purely UW nations so they are all amphibious instead. Guess they'd be the main sea power though.

>Pale ones either with cavemen as their own team or maybe giants.
That would probably work, though I think lumping them in with the giants would be too much (avvites, fomorians AND pale ones). Also Cavemen are technically only a secondary race, so it'd just be about who gets the possibility of having some.

Dude, i just started playing yesterday.

Whats a t-strike?
>>
>>150521213
Thunder Strike. It's a very strong evocation spell in Air Magic. It's a mainstay of several nations, including Caelum, which can use Summon Stormpower to allow their plentiful A2 mages to cast it. Because it deals armor negating damage, it can quickly wipe out armies of heavy infantry.
>>
>>150521213
Abysia is pretty shit, they're only good in singleplayer because their units are strong and the AI really, really sucks at building armies or using magic, so strong units are all you need. If you'd try that in multiplayer against someone who knows what they're doing, you're going to get your shit wrecked past the early game.

T-strike means Thunder Strike.

>>150521213
>I meant more like they are good, not that they should be nerfed.
Actually they're pretty shitty and one-dimensional. They only have fire and a liiiittle of everyhting else. Their best bet is either going for a bless and steamrolling somebody's capital real quick (and I don't think that will win the game still) or go heavily into blood and start making soul contracts to mass-produce devils.

Other than burning one Abysian troops are not something i would ever want to have on my national unit list. They are slow, they are expensive, they have shit statline.
They got nothing but heat auras to make them worth anything.
>>
>>150521434
>lol, nigga looks like Jhon Lennon watching somebody take a squat on strawberry fields in central park.
>>
>>150521213
Alright, friend, you have some misconceptions here

Single Player means absolutely nothing beyond the expansion phase because the AI does not know how to play the game. Like, at all. Don't play SP. It makes you worse at the game by teaching you to fight against strats that no actual player would, (Or sometimes could) use.

I repeat, Single Player means -nothing- outside of expansion.
>>
>>150506090
He was having an issue with the barbarian sprite because he didn't have summod installed. Or dropped it into the wrong folder.
>>
>>150522335
Heat auras are enough to beat many national troops one on one, and they've got the armor to outlast the enemy while the enemy is burning up.

Heavy infantry isn't a popular troop type because they're slow and have high fatigue, but against indies or unsupported AI armies they're great, especially when they can passively shit on most enemy troops with their aura.

D9 is one of the less useful blesses without N9, as even if your sacreds survive with negative hitpoints they will die after the battle, and the damage effect is not worth it at all.

I mean what the fuck. "Oh there's an incorporeal ghost, let's swing my sword at it and then flip a coin to see if I do damage hyuk hyuk" No, you fucking retard, it's a fucking incorporeal ghost, your fucking sword doesn't do shit to it. Not 50%, not 10%, never fucking ever.

Fucking Illfraud ruining the game again by adding fucking stupid RNG that serves literally no prurpose other than to make the game even worse.
>>
>>150529179
There are nations that have troops with magic weapons. How can an ability be overpowered if it doesn't do anything against a 10 gp unit?
>>
>>150529382
This. Just this.
>>
>>150529382
Not to mention, fire damage penetrates it completely because most sources of it are magical. And then we have burning ghosts.

Fucking illfraud.

Ethereal buff would actually make those ethereal cloaks and ghost summons and shit worthwile. I mean 1/10 chance to hit is not that scary, but it still can happen, especially in big fights or against a lot of PD. As of now body ethereal is just a useful buff for units that already have good protection.

Shinu's expansion is too strong, Illwinter pls nerf.
>>
>>150529237
Because unlike most other abilities, there's no anti-spell against it. You cant buff your troops for magic weapons, like you can with armor penetration or resist.

Luckily it's hampered by being on shit troops (like lemurian ghosts that only have a goal of standing in a line then dying), troops with big faults (like normal ghosts) and troops that are hard to mass (like green lions or storm demons that require specific paths).
It's one of the things illwinter did pretty well with balancing this game.
Imagine if lemuria had actually good troops hiding behind ethereal and how raped would most of the nations get.

>>15052944
>Be EA Pan
>get attacked by a stack of storm demons/summer lions
>but LA atlantis is totally made to kill ethereal troops so i guess i've got no problem

Basically you can't use "but some nations have built in counters" as a general argument against ethereal. Most things have counters, some nations have easy or hard access to them, but unless everyone has an easy (or really hard) access to them the *subject of discussion* is still fantastic (or really bad) in general.

Congrats Djeris you are now higher on the remove list than elves and birds.
>>

Its not even a mage, will die to most mages.
>>
>>150539183
Djeris pls go, they're cheap, plentiful, and will be a fucking pain when you start equipping them. Enjoy waging wars when your commanders keep dropping dead.
>>
>>150539378

It needs a fort so he would have to recruit them instead of mages. And again, most mages will obliterate it.
>>
>>150538226
I'm pretty sure that one's his starting scout.
>>
>>150539183
It's flying, so it will be on top of your mage on turn one. Unless your mage is a skellyspammer or something else that will default to summons when assassinated, it will kill most mages with ease.
>>
>>150540095
>or something else that will default to summons when assassinated
any elemental mage with gems should do this
>>
>>150540592
Who the fuck keeps gems on all their mages? Massive gem sink.

Stop damage controlling Djeris.
>>
>>150540592
Yeah, but spreading out your gems across all your mages just to stop a bunch of these chucklefucks is a huge chore. Not to mention the infuriating bullshit you get into when they start assassinating your (non-mage) army commanders while your army is on the move.
>>
>>150540095

N can swarm and will swarm with a gem, elemental mages can elemental and will given a gem, D mage will skele, S mage is fucked, B mage needs a few slaves.

Easy assassin death while you get research.

>>
>>150540859
>6/8 needs gems/slaves assigned to them

Not really a realistic solution, broheim. Have fun keeping a shitload of gems in reserve just in case a bunch of these decide to start culling your mage corps.
>>
>>150541087

And not recruiting any fucking mages to get those assassins is realistic to you?
>>
>>150541267
Yeah, you only need a fort, they aren't cap only. It's extremely feasibly to have a single fort dedicated to that. Your opponent will have to spend ten times more effort and resources in trying to halt your assassins which you shit out at the rate of 1 per turn than you lose for having one fort not recruiting mages.

Hell if Djeris gets a bit larger it's far from unlikely he could have more than one fort shitting them out.
>>
>>150541267
Missing out on a couple of researchers in order to get a tool that could potentially stop an enemy advance dead in its tracks with little to no losses? Hell yes.

Once you get settled in there's no reason not to have a few of those lurking around in every fort. With their high mobility, you can get them where you want, when you want them, so you don't even need much to cover your entire domain, or to get them all to a specific target when you're on the offensive.
>>
>>150540924

That was pretty impressive. But no harm no foul. Caps seem to be placed really fucking close to each other this game.
>>
>>150537089
The way you counter ethereal with mages is to cast spells which do damage.

I agree that ethereal is strong enough as it is, though.

>>150540713

>>150541087

Also isn't Djeris a blood nation? It's actually feasible for him to empower them in blood if he has some territory.
>>
>>150542194
If he starts using them on research mages in large numbers, it's time to start patrolling your forts.

If he uses them against mages in your armies, give them gems. 30 is not a massive investment and should be enough to protect the majority of your mages.

>>150542445
>putting gems on your mages is ridiculously expensive
>but Djeris spending 80 slaves per assassin is reasonable
Why all the panic when there are nations in vanilla which can do the same thing but worse? Nobody rushes Mictlan, Pangaea, or TNN.
>>
>>150542348
Wake me up when you find a nation with D2 assassins.
>>
>>150543198

>>
>>150543198

>30

Even at 1 gem per mage that will cover almost nothing.
>>
>>150544115
They don't rush them because they're scared shitless of their assassins, I should have said.

>>150544120
Are you counting every mage in every fort?

If they're in a stationary location you can patrol to defend them. Only mages which are on the move need gems.
>>
>>150544582
They're flying. They can easily move to your least defended fort and do their thing, then fly out again and move to the next fort when you move in troops to patrol.

>>

>>
>>150560904

Skratti ARE one of the best recruitable units in the game. They aren't quite recruitable-SC-chassis grade threats, but two can kill arbitrarily large numbers of troops without support, and you can also make use of them for turbo communions, and they can, at a pinch, offer battlefield support casting. They're fucking great.
>>
If you had to pick Gygja OR Skratti, which do you take?
>>
>>150563724
Why can't I take both? Niefel's mages are honestly p. good. And jarls are arguably among the best thug chassis possible.
>>
>>150563724
Depends on what other mages I had access to, since Skratti have a lot of utility and you want to be able to forge thug equipment and use communions/sabbaths with them. Gygja's are more generally useful for magic but a lot of their power comes from being all being able to join skratti communions.
They do give you S3, N7?, D5, B6 without 10% randoms on their own due to boosters, which is pretty nice.

Ulm had the defensive advantage and opened with Army of Lead, followed by RoS which took out most of Arco's mages, most of whom were already half-dead to begin with due to being diseasebombed in their capital.

After that it was just a matter of spamming Magma Eruption and Iron Blizzard.

>>
>>150596613
A handful of geared mages casting WoD or a geared SC casting Wrathful Skies
>>
>>150596719
Wind of Death? How effective is that actually? Also, I don't see how Arco gets a D4A1 mage
>>
>>150597040
It's pretty good.

At that stage in the game, everyone should have everything. You need only D3A1 to cast it, since you're using gems, which means you need only a D2A1 base with a skull staff.
>>
>>150597040
Wind of Death is extremely effective. Anything on the battlefield which fails the MR check will basically die when the battle ends.

>>150597139
Best arco can do for a D3A1, as far as I know, is 80 gems, not counting any magic pen items.

30 to summon a mound fiend, 50 to empower in A.

Even for lategame that's a lot of gems just to cast WoD once.

>>150598308
The problem isn't a lack of uses for D3A1, it's the large risk of the D3A1 mage dying in the process of using WoD.

Like RoS casters, WoD casters need to be relatively cheap to be useful.

Using a more expensive mage makes the problem worse, not better.

>>
>>150599062
>People won't leave you alone, you will be gangbanged by 3 people before the expansion phase is over

and what does it mean?
a multiplayer game with more than 2 factions can balance itself by simply having mature palyers ganging up on overpowered nations. but they are still overpowered.

what makes Ermor more annoying than other overpowered nations is that it's extremely strong and dangerous early and once you defeated it you are left with one giant army of diseased soldiers and lands with no gold, possibly dead mages and a weird research path. and +15 death gem income, but those won't help most nation for their very next war.most nations are fine with getting gold.

>>150610352
I try to pick something that balances being thematic and practical. That's not always possible but then again with a bit of imagination you can make anything feel more or less accurate.

I try to aim for a good bless or access to a high-tier spell that suits my nation when I'm making a pretender but I don't like to go full no-fun-allowed mode. I'll probably die before I ever make a N9W9 meme-bless pretender. That's just AIDS.

Dominions isn't really what I'd call an exploitable game since the whole game is about exploitation. The magic system has a way to fuck just about anything anybody can throw at you, reaching certain magics in time for them to save you isn't always viable but there's nothing I'd really call broken.

>>150612989
The general principle is sound. And since Burns never actually intended to genuinely participate in his race from the start and just wanted to ensure that his employees took the competition seriously I see nothing wrong with that specific case either. The lessons learned from the race were for the benefit of his employees, not himself.

but there is no such thing as cheating in real life, because there are no rules. >>
>>150613718
Yep, you can take the throne by the way.

the whole principle is that cheating invalidates the win condition. If you wanted to play a game with no rules, why did you agree to them in the first place?

Its like the fucking LA Lakers. They won 11 championships by falling on their ass and flopping around like a fish. Which I admit is excusable if your goal was the receive the exorbitant amounts of money they got paid, but if it were to play a good game a basketball then they had simply failed and not won anything at all.
>>
>>150613281
>Do you have any ideas on this?
The big issue comes from the absurd timesink of scripting 50+ mages. Scripting is here to stay, but it could be made more streamlined. First off making mages a bit less retarded when not scripted would help a lot, also conditions (if(x) then do y).

Biggest thing would be to abstract the scripting to a higher level. Instead of scripting for each mage, you could have magegroups who have an objective (e.g. Mage Group A needs to focus on AoE fire damage, B needs to spam Earthquake). You'd define the group, define how many gems they have access to, and set a few conditions (must use x, must not use y, use or don't use communions, whatever), then the AI would take over, spread the gems as needed, make communions, and use the spells you told them to in a way that stays under a certain fatigue (again defined by you). Basically just abstract the whole thing so you don't need to do it per-mage unless you really want to.
>>
>>150613972
That does sound useful, but also hard to implement. That would pretty much entirely revolve around upgrading the AI, and considering where it's at now getting it to that level would be very, very hard.
>>
I'm sorry, i'm not trying to be a pill.

I guess what I'm saying is devoting even 5 hours a week to ANYTHING seems nearly impossible for me, so I have no real chance at winning at anything, much less something where people spend 10-20 hours a week practicing.

The game could use some better ways to end games quickly if they drag on a bit. As in, faster movement, some globals that directly impact how easy it is to take thrones by making forts easier to siege or something. I know people complain about throne rushing but if the alternative is waiting around for 30 turns before someone finally drags out their advantage to win I'd rather take the quicker games.

>>
>>150613972
Alternatively make a big change and make magespam much less advantageous. Changing the whole mage system and research system so you do not end up with 200 mages in the lategame with 50 of them out at war. Quality vs quantity. It would be a big change but it's Dom5, 4 is already 3 Deluxe Edition, for 5 they need to change shit up quite a bit.

>>150614067
Having an AI determine the most efficient course of action by given commands is actually pretty simple in terms of AI, at least compared to what a lot of other games do. If the goal is AoE fire damage, the AI knows what mages it has, what spells it can use, and all that, past that it's pure math.
That said seeing how the usual AI in Dom4 is, maybe they should just enlist some AI programmer to help.
>>
>>150614230
I spend 30 minutes a day, sometimes an hour playing Dom4 and I only started recently, and I'm still having fun to be honest, even though I've never won a MP game (only finished 2 so far).

The great thing about a game like this with several players is that you don't have to be better than the best player in the game, just smarter or more cunning. You don't HAVE to beat all 12 other players, only 2 or 3.

But yeah you're never going to be "competitive" at something unless you put at least 4 hours a day into it. You really think you can run side by side with Bolt just by jogging 20 minutes in the morning? "Professional" Dota 2 players spend 8-10 hours a day playing, and Stacraft players spend around 12.

So either pick a non-competitive game, or learn to have fun losing.

dominions is actually a really crappy game with a really good premise. Its graphics are crap, its gameplay is crap, is game balance is non-existent, there are too many factions and not enough variety in each faction, the magic system is hit or miss and not scaled properly, the only thing it really excels at is its selection of pretender gods and cultural amalgamation.

It has a couple of novel concepts like using a map that has nodal points spread across a plane instead of a grid, but overall the game isn't worth 30 bucks, maybe 5, or 10 with a little polish.

mainly the reason its so addictive is the mystery cult that has sprung up around it. The premise is so alluring that you're willing to put up with all that crap just to play pretend and immerse yourself into the world you have helped build.

A lot of games are kind of like that, Dwarf Fortress and Space Station 13 both come to mind. Neither are particularly shining examples of graphics or gameplay but they somehow get you to lower your guard and indulge in the background fantasy of the world.

All the benefits of immersion without any of the drawbacks of commercial success.

Of course, that means you don't get any of the benefits of commercial success, either, such as a wider player base, prettier graphics, expanded influence in the design community, and of course, that sweet, sweet dosh.

I enjoy it, but I understand why its not a hit, or really even all that popular. There is something very unrewarding about creating games that are popular but not commercially successful.

It seems nowadays that games rely more on charity than anything else to fund their projects. They are almost created like non-profits or sustainable causes.

They have no real interest in innovation because innovation is no longer what drives the market. Nobody wants to take the risk of making something proprietary because there is no way to enforce any kind of penalty for copyright infringement.

It's not sound at all and sounds like an excuse given by a sore loser.

Don't want to meme you pal, but sounds like you've never experienced an ounce of adrenaline in your life, the thrill and rush of throwing everything you have against someone of equal skill who does the same thing, and the sweet taste of victory that comes after a narrow win.

Maybe you simply aren't a competitive person, and these sort of games aren't for you. The fun you have while gardening by yourself and the fun you have in gardening decoration competitions are different after all, and neither is better than the other, but don't come in my ping-pong competition and say we should just pass the ball slowly so that nobody will lose.
