I'm a bit new to Gamemaker, anybody know how I would go about making destructible tiles like in Metroid? Preferably a method where I don't need to make completely new objects for each unique tile.

Basic construction rules area working, e.g. bodies can only go on grips and other bodies, mags only go on bodies, etc.

I odn't like it as it's a bit inconsistent, but it does open up a lot of level design possibilities... At least give the user better feedback that it was in fact fall damage he died to. But I can see myself getting frustrated by having to try a drop to see if I die to it, because I assume you don't die by falling down one step right? There's some arbitrary cutoff... I guess it's fine but it has a decently big drawback so make sure you gain enough from it in terms of level design.

The easiest way is to make a collission grid and use A* pathfinding. Otherwise you're going to have to come up with your own solution. For example: For 8 directions around your character, spawn a "shadow" of your character and see if it collides with something. If it doesn't, then spawn another shadow in 8 directions around that shadow. Repeat until you have a shadow that collides with the target, stop a branch when it collides with anything else. Note that this is O(n^2) (that means inefficient for big maps).

Is there something I'm missing here? This is supposed to be the script for throwing a fireball, its supposed to change the sprite, check for what frame its on, and if its the throwing frame, spawn the fireball.
Instead, the fireball "sometimes" spawns, despite me being able to see the exact frame it should spawn on, hence image speed being so low. I can't figure out what else could be preventing it, anyone?

Check to see if the code itself is executing or if it's the instace_create that's having problems. Maybe the fireball is being created but somehow its position is being set somewhere else?

Just did that. Turns out its not the position, but it quite literally just isn't spawning sometimes. I tried on the ground, worked around 5 times in a row before it stopped, then ran around and tried doing it while running/jumping/etc to see if I needed to reset image speed or something. Didn't work immediately, but eventually started working again, albeit less effectively.

That animation looks like someone tied a string to their foot and lifted them.
In a trip and fall, the body pivots around the foot at the start of the trip. After that the feet can fly up during the fall.

Redesigned one of the enemies. It's going to try to stomp the player when he's below it, and will die when its flower (which I tried to design so it looks like a target) is hit. Animation timings, speed, target design, etc. need more work.

This is some weak copypasta but this part just rankles me. English has an even dumber gender system than most other languages. In addition to masculine/feminine/neuter, you have the distinction between "things" and "stuff," AKA countable and uncountable nouns. There's a whole different set of words (less vs. fewer, much vs. many...) for talking about each of these. Sometimes you can use the same word to refer to completely different concepts ("this is bad code" vs. "these are bad codes") depending on which type of noun you treat it as. You basically have to memorize every noun twice just to keep track of what it means when it's a thing and what it means when it's stuff.

You need to make tiles real entities, so you can't use the built in tile system.

You need to make an object type that serves as a destroyable tile. If you're new you can make a separate object type for each unique kind of destroyable tile (e.g. this is brick, this is sandstone, etc), but if you're not new you should make a single kind of destroyable tile and give it configuration parameters.

Once you have a destroyable tile object, you make it solid to the player. You make it take damage from player attacks like enemies do. You make it change sprites based on its health value. You make it destroy itself when its health falls too low. You can add a destruction animation if you want, but this animation shouldn't collide with the player, so it should probably be a separate object or some kind of particle effect.

I hit a road block. I don't know what to do when two objects move to the same space. My objects only move to spots that are empty and since they all move at the same time on a grid of course they overlap when they move to the same spot because it was empty before. I disabled auto-exposure/eye adaptation which made everything a lot darker, but now everything is constant brightness, which seems a lot better for this game.

The problem now is I don't know if the regular nighttime light is too bright or if the torch light isn't bright enough. There isn't much different when the torch is turned on.

Well, I'm calling Torch Light done for now. I have basic/expert/master in (each mastery is a little brighter and further radius than the previous). It's subtle, but I can't have master be too bright, and basic still has to be bright enough to be useful. I'll tweak the ambient light if I find it necessary the more I playtest stuff.

Ok so I decided to finally go back to ColorFall, add the last couple of features I meant to add some months ago and publish it.

currently it looks like the dude batters stuff with the flat side

Also the turn seems a bit too drastic - too much spin. Turn him less, but make his body move forward. Like make his upper body move so much forward that his head almost touches the tile boundary. Make his head tilt a little with the swing.

Also, don't make the whole body move at once. First rotate hips, then rotate the shoulders and then move the elbow, then make the sword swing. Some overlap might be needed between those stages.

What you are doing with the progressive movement, is creating the whip effect. The whole body goes into the motion, starts off slow and when it eventually comes to the sword smear, it seems so powerful that you can almost feel it.

Nah. I think you should try to build up everything from the basic 4 colors and gray. For the red area, to indicate that there's a limited around of room you can fill with balls, I have to ideas:
- A simple gray line, maybe a striped line (so not ____ but _ _ _ _).
- Or simply let the place fill until it make your wheel stop. So if there are too much balls at the bottom that your square wheel won't be able to spin any longer. That would be the best visual representation of the situation for the player, imho. Just think about Tetris: why do you lose? Because your blocks reach an imaginary line. But how's that line represented to the player? It's at the top of the space he can fill, so he understands that there's no more room for the shapes. Same case with your game: instead of setting a random line, let the barrier have another meaning which the player can understand and can relate to. In this scenario, this barrier would be the edge of your wheel.

I hope it's clear what I'm trying to say.

Not really, only the first five classes will be available for the first game, covering all basic needs with new classes being unlocked as the game progresses

Added a special ball (marked with an X) that deletes dead balls from the bottom pit.
This means I'll have to rewrite some things since as you can see the script that manages the dead balls is fucking up.

A couple, but not too many.
AI will have a couple of improvements for the next demo, villagers already have a field of view. They run away to the houses when they spot you and will call the hunter too, so it will have a little bit more of a stealth element rather that running towards everything that moves like it used to be.
I'll probably add a few power ups, and different kinds of villagers.
Maybe I'll add another enemy in the future. One way more dangerous that the hunter.
Thought about adding bonus stages with different mechanics too.

Still want to keep the game simple, pretty arcade like, if I dare to say.

I like Vampire Bit because it's a perfect example of a game design experiment. It is as simple as it can be. Collect X items to get score. That's it. It's basically an alteration of PacMan. However it raises so many questions related to game design. Well, it started as a side project for waifu jam, and I was planning to leave it die after that. A lot of people gave me feedback and wanted to see more of it and that's what has motivated me to keep working on it for a while, mostly to fix everything that people complained about, and to make it a little bit more fun without making too complicated either.

That's the thing though, pixel art still requires some experience. Aside from the animation which needs a lot more weight behind it, the problem is that the whole thing is completely flat. But this might just be an early sketch for all I know.
What I would do (I'm a nodev, I just animate, draw and lurk here to give advice on those things, just so you know) is make him start off with the sword on his shoulder. Then have him swing it down diagonally into the ground, kicking up some dust, then swing it back up so it lands behind him. If you want a third swing, finish with a spin attack link-style, except spin only once. Then make him heft it back o his shoulder. Remember to give at least a little recovery between swings and make a small movement go through his body when he when the blade hits the floor.
This suggestion would make it look less controlled, but that's kinda a fact of life with a sword that large. You could also just make the sword smaller and just add a visible slashing arc that extends beyond the weapon itself if you just want more range. And again, make his feet move. Have him take a step forward, then one back when the second swing passes over him.

I'm happy with what I've got so far and am only looking to improve the hand since it's the thing that looks bad to me.

I'm not trying to make the best looking art ever, as long as it's clear that it's a swing then smears are perfect for me, I'm nowhere near good enough to do much more than that and the amount of art I need to finish means I can't spend too much time on a single strike.

Your problem is that you're too scared of using sharp contours, and you're doing typical beginner mistakes when it comes to faces on any medium. The expressive parts of the face (eyes, mouth) are huge, and the shapes lack definition because you don't know exactly how they work.
It's kinda hard to fix that quickly. All the advice I can give to you is draw (model) what you see, do it more, and don't be afraid of harsh contours. You might also wanna check out one of the gorillion tutorials about facial proportions, I recommend a PDF of an Andrew Loomis book.

Can someone who knows a thing or two about space help me out here a bit?
I'm starting to like the look of my autocannons which picks up speed as they warm up, but i'm struggling to make it look nice while the ship is moving. The particle effect kind of just stays where they were emitted. Is that how gunfire smoke would behave in space? If i move forwards, would the smoke that appeared also move at the same velocity as the ship that fired it?

Where is the smoke emitting from? The barrels? As far as I know smoke is an aerosol, it's very small solids/liquids diffused in air. So there shouldn't really be any in space. Normal bullets wouldn't even fire in a void anyway, explosions need air after all.
But if you ignore all that, since there is no resistance in space particles would travel at the same speed as you. The smoke would probably dissipate quickly though.
Or you could just make it a rail autocannon and have an electric glow running along the barrels when they fire I guess.

It doesn't matter if it's smoke or a solid.
Imagine if you detached a piece of metal from the ship, it doesn't suddenly vanish if you're going fast, it'll carry on travelling with you.

Everything I said earlier still applies then. Key features are WAY thinner lips, a jawline (not a fucking rectangular one, it can still be sorta diamond-shaped. Just make the cutoff at the sides sharper), more of a brow ridge (don't make it protrude, just make it less curved), thinner and shorter nose, eyes down a bit, longer forehead. And, again, bigger ears. Earlobes start at the same height as the nose, and ears end at brow height.

One of the reasons it looks so female is the softness of the features and the lip size.

You may have got that impression because right at the beginning I went from one side to the other and stood at about the same distance from the walls on both sides, but that was unintentional, you can actually touch the walls fine. I did so on other parts of the video, even doing a walljump at 0:25.

Third person shooter with RPG elements(pick weapon/armor and fine tuning your mechs performance).
Game will be mostly about killing hordes of enemies until you die(Last Stand). Might add a story mode if people give a fuck.

Been using Gamemaker for over a year, but want to start learning some basic 3d. Should I go for Unity or UE4?

Tried both over a week. I liked BP of UE4, but it feels like it could become a tangled up mess over the long term. C++ seems extremely complicated and scary, but maybe I need some time with it.

Liked c# with unity and it was easy to jump in after the tutorials. But i've read around the forums and it seems you either need to write systems for yourself or buy them on the asset store, the same systems that exist on UE4.

also looked at the patch notes and saw that UE4 development is much much much faster than Unity. But it got me thinking if I really need all that power that UE4 has, with the added complexity.

Any advice from Unity or UE4 devs?

I personally very much prefer UE4.

There's not much horrifically wrong with Unity, but every little bit ranges from a little to a lot worse than the UE4 counterpart in my opinion and it all adds up to UE4 just being nicer to make a game with.
With the exception of documentation and arguably the availability of help online, for which Unity has a stupid amount.

Blueprints indeed become a mess when you don't keep things organised, but all code does.

Remember!
ipairs is used for tables with indices (aka tables with no keys) to iterate over them in order of indices.
pairs on the other hand has no such requirement and just randomly iterates over the table but keys can be used too.

What happened in your case, is that ipairs tried to find an index, but since it couldn't, it didn't do anything.

TL;DR: Use pairs for key-value tables and ipairs for indexed tables.
