I'm having some problems with RA mednafen psx. It seems to run fine but every once and a while, usually 30 seconds or so, it stutters a bit, and seems to lose frames. It's not really noticeable unless I'm recording, which then the effect is somehow amplified in the recording. Here is a test sample I made:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX2RAyA6h80
take a look at 0:38 and on.
I'm not sure what it is, I thought it was the recording software at first but then I found that using different cores/programs obs worked fine, but with different PSX games using mednafen there was a similar effect. I've been searching for answers for days no and have hit dead ends each time. I'm not sure what to do anymore.
>>
>>150370229
catsfc (it has ear rape audio though)
RealBoy

That's about it really unless you set up VHBL, and even then, PSP emulators weren't known for their incredible accuracy
>>
>>150370613

For gameplay, I recommend getting a slower ship that handles better. At higher levels Wipeout gets too fast. And hit Up on jumps so that you land softer.
>>
>>150370613
That is confusing. i would've said the game+the recorder is generating too much CPU usage but then I would've expected it to happen over and over at the same "high end" places on the track rather than only after a certain amount of time.

Could it have something to do with when obs writes to the hdd vs when mednafen is reading info off it? Maybe not though because I'd expect it to be writing constantly and mednafen to be reading constantly or just putting everything in ram at the start
>>
>>150370961
anon I intend on doing full perfects with icaras on every track. I finished porto kora and began sampa run, but the lagging is a bit noticeable even during gameplay and it bugs the shite out of me, and I fear it will fuck with me times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deG76vqyias
>>150371079
It is kind of time based, it seems to happen whenever it wants, but only for a certain amount of time. But I don't think it's CPU based either, my CPU never seems to go above 50%
>>
>>150371592

>>
>>150371592

And are you on Special Edition? They made balance changes, and added around 10 new tracks.
>>
>>150371993
No, I'm on regular for this one, I felt like going back to the OG handling and the 25 fps was going to make these challenges a fucking headache. Plus the classic league tracks are dumb anyways, completely fucked with the lighting of the 2097 tracks.
>>150371968

Alright I tried it, but I'm not exactly sure how resource monitor works, and I don't think mine was fully functioning.
What I did notice is that the green disk part, whatever it means, would seemingly spike whenever a stutter phase would begin or end. The blue CPU part at the top was constantly maxxed out as long as the game was running. Those are the only 2 things I noticed while trying to play through the tiny ass OBS preview monitor.

I can't get Ys IV: Dawn of Ys to run in any PSP homebrew emulator I try. Anyone know why?
>>
>>150373940
It's because of whatever Windows theme you've installed that you can see shit.
Anyway, that means it probably is because of HDD writes.
>>
>>150373940
Not him but: Blue are just the maximums it ever hits during that session of monitoring. Greens are what tells you when something is spiking. Also your font color may be the same as your window color there so you can't see the titles and such. From the green disk part spiking I'd say HDD writing or read or the like is causing the problem.
>>
>>150374239
>>150374203
I always knew my HDD was shit. Is there any way to fix this other than just having to buy a new HDD?
>>
>>150374340
Really depends on which is causing the HDD spike and if there are perhaps options in OBS to change when and how it writes data or if you can find other programs that behave differently. If you have multiple HDDs, setting OBS to write to the one mednafen is not using to read the game may help. I find it kind of hard to believe a HDD shouldn't be able to handle this kind of operation. It may be something just being improperly configured for optimal recording.
>>
>>150374340
Maybe decreasing cache size dramatically in OBS would help - make it a constant write of not much data instead of a big dump of more than it can handle. Not good for the HDD to be constantly in use like that, but you're probably gonna want to get a new one soon anyway.
>>
>>150374569
I believe there are options like fast, superfast, andultrafast settings which IIRC sacrifice quality for writing speed, but even at the highest the same thing kept occurring. Unfortunately, I don't have multiple HDDs, but I do have a 1TB external drive if that's worth anything.
>>150374674
Where is that in the options exactly? Can't seem to find it tonight. And yes, I hope to buy a new PC entirely soon. This thing was obsolete like 3 years ago.
>>
>>150374843
You might try having it write to the external as a test to see if it helps. It's possible it might be even worse but just trying it shouldn't be a problem.
>>

While I don't think that you can run Melee well enough with it (maybe something like 30 - 40fps, you'd have to try), you shouldn't switch to XP since it isn't supported anymore. And security is a nightmare on that.
Also, it takes more resources than Lubuntu so chances that it runs are even slimmer, if you were to switch.
>>
>>150378145
>CPU: AMD
Forget about it. I would switch out of *buntu, but if you like it, then you might as well continue there. Also, why not try it and see if it works? I had an AMD shit dual core on the laptop several years ago and it did some emulation. I didn't try Dolphin at the time however.

New 3DS screen is great because it's got a 240p screen so the games scale perfectly to it.

The Vita screen obviously is not 240p, so you'll have black bars with integer scaling, but it has really vivid colours which are nice.

Both are good for their own reasons

However, in terms of emulation quality, the N3DS is leagues ahead of the Vita, but that's to be expected because the 3DS has had Retroarch for a lot longer, and a 807mhz CPU compared to the Vita's 444mhz.

PocketSNES can run most of the library and special chip games like Super Mario RPG, Kirby Super Star, Yoshi's Island, and Star Fox at full speed, and catsfc-plus can play the fringe games PocketSNES can't. Both also have non-ear rape audio

On the Vita, the only SNES core ported to Retroarch so far is the catsfc core, not catsfc-plus. The difference between the two is that catsfc has ear rape audio. catsfc also can't do special chip games. Barring Retroarch, there's also a port of SNES9x called SNES9x-Vita. It can't even run Super Metroid at full speed so it's not relevant.
>>
>>150411749
>807mhz CPU compared to the Vita's 444mhz.
Where is this math from?

I know the N3DS has 4 cores. If we take remove one for dedicated system usage, that means there are 3 cores dedicated to non-system running at 268MHz for a "combined" total of 804MHz.

Compare this to the Vita's quad core, once again excluding one for dedicated system, for three cores maxing at 444MHz by default.

How do you figure the N3DS is faster? Or am I missing something?
>>
>>150407474
It's for control configurations that are using a binary input like a button for a controller function that needs to be analog. So you can press the configured button and it goes to analog 100%, but press it along with the Modifier button and it'll simulate analog 50%.
>>
>>150412190
Eh, looked it up. Seems it's specifically an overlock for the N3DS.
>>
>>150412190
The 3DS has a dual core CPU that runs at a speed of 268 MHz

The New 3DS has a quad core CPU that runs at a speed of 807 MHz

The Vita has a quad-core CPU that runs at a speed of 444 MHz in userland homebrew.
>>
>>150412645
um what? So all this time people bitching about no homebrew on vita shouldve just gotten a 3ds instead?
>>
>>150413227
OLED screen
>>
>>150413303
Early n3DS's had OLED screens though.
>>
>>150413227
Theoretically, the Vita should be able to do everything the New 3DS can do plus PSX and PSP games, and minus DS games. The Vita also has a much more powerful GPU, and the most popular way to code emulators for the PSP was to offload some of the emulation to the GPU, which might be the route the Vita ends up taking, which might make it better than the New 3DS. It's just going to take a lot of time.
>>
>>150413359
New 3DS's either have TN screens (high probability) or IPS screens (low probability).

No New 3DS' ever came with OLED screens.
>>
>>150412645
Do you have a source for the New 3DS CPU speed?

I'm checking several myself (including 3dbrew) and they seem to tip-toe around the wording. They say the system/entire CPU is running around that (which would be around the three free cores for games running at 268MHz), not individual cores being clocked at ~800MHz each.

I'm not a lingo master, but this seems to imply they're upselling it. For instance, you wouldn't say a 2GHz dual-core desktop CPU is 4GHz.

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it.
>>
>>150414026

Adding up the CPU the frequencies of individual cores doesn't make any sense anyway. Do people really do that?
>>
>>150414114

I'm sure Nintendo had bigger plans for the New 3DS before it was hacked day 1.

>>
>>150431419
Since when have console manufacturers had "bigger plans" for their consoles? As soon as they release one console they're already starting work on the next. That's how they make money, and game developers love it because people will rush out to buy new games, not to mention they can milk more cash out of their old games with trivial HD texture swaps.
>>
>>150434661

He's probably overthinking it but it's true that console vendors can decide to focus the development on one console for one reason or an other. See the aborted Sonic on Saturn for instance.

If Nintendo doesn't believe in the Wii U anymore (why would they?) it might make sense for them to delay some projects to target the NX instead if it means higher profits down the road.

The cell cpu is a very specifically designed set of vector processors with a master control PowerPC core

Not only does it have a relatively unique design compared to x86 it has an instruction set which is radically different. This all has to be emulated, and while creating a real time compiler for instruction execution is much easier and less taxing (IF you have full programming documentation) even that is a large hurdle. Figuring out exactly how to handle the complex custom hardware and how they interact, their busses, caches, and so on is a whole other level of shit you dont want to get into. Emulating hardware is at a literally speaking level using non-native hardware and instructions to mimic the devic on a physical level. It isnt and wont be "transistor" level emulation by any stretch of imagination, hell even PS2 emulation struggles to reach that kind of parity. We're lucky enough that a few very dedicated people have been able to create a ridiculously hacky version which can get past the boot screen in ten years.

When done right, using newer APIs or instruction sets can help with things like performance. Using vulkan to take advantage of async compute is one example. Considering HLE is not designed to be super accurate, modern APIs are usually not necessary.

However, i think GLideN64 was done poorly. It still uses floating point instead of integer... And also doesn't even fix Body Harvest collision..

I think a big reason why people are rushing to up the requirements is because they don't know better.

>>
>>150480547
Just think: this is the state of emulation now, entire game libraries are in danger of never being preserved because of broken dumps and people only care about the games they care about, so whatever is popular--at least a bit and among "nerds"--gets preserved. While mounds of "shovelware" will not live to see even the next millennium.

>>
>>150481118
People are uploading broken games to archive.org? Now that is a danger. When someone sees a game on archive.org there's kind of an understanding that the person who put it there did it to preserve the game and that they took the time to make sure all fixes were applied and the like. But if that isn't the case that can really screw up peoples' perceptions of what is preserved or not.
>>
>>150481341
Check the psp games on there. Lots of broken shit that did not have the fixes applied.

no, it has a low-level command buffer API of its own called libgxm.

Vita SDK doesn't have a GL driver implementation written for it either. Somebody in the homebrew scene needs to come up with a GLES driver if they want more quick-and-easy ports, I doubt you're going to be seeing much custom handported GL-to-libgxm ports out there.
>>
>>150533471

nvidia just abandoned it and even guys on the inside who feel friendly towards RA could not really help in terms of either cgc (the cg compiler) being updated so that Cg shaders could be ported to GLSL with the parameters still being intact.

Fact is, it is a slowly decaying ecosystem, and tons of stuff doesn't even work anymore. For instance, can't use Cg shaders in GL 3.3 core context mode and up because nvidia never added that to the runtime back when they were still developing it, and it doesn't work with any driver context like Wayland or or DRM/KMS anyway.

The only alternative would have been to do a complete reverse engineering of Cg and try to replicate it in SPIR-V but honestly, best to just start with a clean break. Cg had many limitations and some things like partial derivatives never worked properly on anything but nvidia GPUs, and the Cg-to-GLSL conversion made for very inoptimal, slow and unreadable code.

Starting with a clean break here is best. This new spec will work for both OpenGL and Vulkan, and (maybe) Metal if that eventually becomes a thing for RA on OSX/iOS.
>>
>>150533471

That being said, the Vita has Cg support, and once it is figured out how the Cg runtime SDK functions work, Cg shaders might work on RetroArch Vita.

So that will be a 'final hurrah' for the old spec while we slowly transition the PCs/newer systems over to the slang spec.
>>
>>150533471
Cg still works, but not for Vulkan or GL 3.2+. So it's not forward compatible with any future graphics APIs.

Just an FYI, to install CFW on the PS3, you need to be on firmware 3.55 because Sony changed the keys and where they're stored, how they're generated, etc. on 3.56+

Math "worked with" (I need to use the term incredibly loosely here) Wanikoko of Wii hacking fame as Wanikoko tried to get the keys and a way to install CFW on 3.56+

According to Wanikoko, Math wouldn't tell him anything concrete, gave him vague hints on where to be looking for exploits that totally exists guys because I, Math, totally have all the keys and know how to dump them guys pay attention to me guys please I've never released anything before in my life but I swear I have the keys guys.

After 6 months, Wanikoko made a blog post where he said he was giving up because Math literally didn't even know how the PS3 internally worked, and he was just full of shit, and it was like an essay on why nobody should ever listen to Math or pay Math attention ever again.

Then Math dropped off the face of the Earth until you posted this tweet of him vaguely saying that he's going to port reicast to the Vita

I'll PayPal you $100 if he beats the reicast-libretro port, $500 if he stops his own port of reicast after the libretro port gets released, and $1000 if he mentions his hurt fee-fee's about one of the reasons why he's stopped porting reicast.

Ogre Battle 64 is readily available on the Nintendo eShop as a VC title that I could have bought for real money, but I didn't. I also have no plans to ever buy it from the eShop.

I just pirated Ogre Battle 64.

Emulation is piracy.

Fine, I'll revise what I said. My original example is a pure display of piracy, no question about it. I don't own an N64, I don't own a Wii or a Wii U, I don't own Ogre Battle 64, I have no intentions of purchasing any of them, and yet I download PJ64 + a ROM and play through it to completion. It's piracy.

What if I own Ogre Battle 64, but not an N64 or a Wii or a Wii U? I just went to a thrift store and bought the cart for $5, then play through it on PJ64? Is that piracy because I didn't dump my own cart? According to the law, that is technically piracy.

What if I own a Japanese copy of Ogre Battle 64 but no N64, Wii, or Wii U, then download an English version of the ROM because I don't speak Japanese, and play through it on an emulator? Again, technically, piracy.

What if I own an N64, an Everdrive 64, a Japanese copy of Ogre Battle 64, and download an English copy to put on the Everdrive? Again, technically piracy.

What if I own a copy of Ogre Battle 64, no N64, a Wii, but I pirate the .wad and install it to play through Ogre Battle 64? Again, technically piracy.

However, there's a lot of ways around this. What if I don't own an N64 or a copy of Ogre Battle 64 physically, but I download it off the eShop on my Wii, dump it, extract the ROM, then run it in PJ64? As long as PJ64 isn't using code from the Oman Archive, technically, that's not piracy.

There's like a bajillion different ways you can look at this and have it end up being piracy or not piracy, but technically, more often than not, it's piracy. We tell every single person who comes into the thread to just download the No-Intro sets from archive.org. We don't tell them to dump shit themselves. We tell them to download BIOS packs from the wiki, not to dump them themselves.

I own two copies of Ogre Battle 64, and I own zero copies of any other Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre game. I'll emulate whatever I want, and I don't give a fuck. Neither should you.

Nobody should care.
>>
>>150546004
Yeah, I did some digging and that seems to be the conclusion that I came up with too. No-intro seems to be more the games and dumps that are worth collecting and TOSEC seems to be more like... every dump of every game ever dumped.
>>
>>150548116
>Is that piracy because I didn't dump my own cart?
No it's piracy because you downloaded software you didn't have rights to. Likewise with every other example.

>piracy debate general

For Dreamcast, convert your .gdi and .bin's into .chds

For PSX, convert your .bin and .cue's into .pbp's

For GameCube, convert your 1.5GB .iso's into scrubbed .gcm's

For Wii, convert your 4.8/8.7GB .iso's into .wbfs's

For everything else, just compress the ROM image into a .7z

Hell, I bought super metroid the other month on the eShop and I STILL opt to emulate it on my phone after purchase because the 3DS is a piece of shit; same goes for all VC games. I have the option to play it on my own hardware, so I do.

Which begs the question: What if companies actually offered ROMs of their out-of-circulation games to be played on computers/phones DRM-free?
I'd pay for that, and it's not like they can stop people from pirating these games anyways, at least that way there would be an alternative; because for 80% of all games pre-PS2, there's no cheap, easy way to get them and it's only going to get harder.

The real reason they keep circulating is that it's far harder to get the patches to fix the dumps than it is to get the bad dumps themselves. The scene handled this improperly. The proper way to handle it would be to actually release a proper dump rather than a patch to fix the bad dump.

Compressing GC usually isn't worth the effort since they barely compress at all, but there isn't any harm in it.

Using Dolphin to compress Wii images though scrubs them, which means it removes padding data that's there just to fill up the disc which is irreversible. Some games might actually need it (eg for AP), but also every archive database(like redump) keeps the padding data so your discs will never match those. If you're not autistic enough to care about then, then it's probably fine.

It's also possible to scrub GC discs, but Dolphin doesn't do it.

Emulation-wise, it's exactly the same core, only the frontend and accessible options differ.

I prefer standalone since it has a nicer interface and more features (lightgun support using the wii remote for example). It also seems to run faster (when you enable FPS display and fast-forward in both of them), maybe it's important for some hard-to-emulate games or CD games but both seem to run Genesis games at 60 fps just fine.

The reason it doesn't have custom mipmap support is because gabest had an old shit GPU at the time he was developing it, and couldn't handle the texture cache in a sane way with the limitations his GPU had, so he wrote a butchered texture cache system around the limitations which custom mimapping can never work with.

It's been on his list for years. I wouldn't get your hopes up until he actually starts work on it.
>>
>>150634291
This is the problem with the project then.

I recently picked up an older open sourced project and refactored it and rewrote it beyond belief, it looks nothing like the original. I basically pulled an SP on it.

It was for the betterment of the project, and made my life and the lives of the other developers considerably easier since I fixed problems looming in the code for years.

I took the project by the balls and didn't care what broke, since they were all just as bad because of the original undermining faults.

PCSX2 needs to just go dark for a while and figure it out.
