keep in mind missile velocity is an important stat. There is no questioning that of course if you want to be a mounted archer then you make a mounted archer and not some sort of crappy crossbowman. And the bows superior rate of fire means that if you want to be a primarily ranged character (bow and two quivers with a backup melee) then you go bow.

But the siege crossbow has an advantage that people often forget, and that is that its ranges for shield penetration are longer than the warbow due to the way velocity effects damage.

With a masterwork siege crossbow (or a warbow for that matter) you can shoot right through shields and headshot lesser enemies, but a crossbow is better suited for this for two reasons. One, its higher speed gives it a further range before the damage decreases enough for a shield to stop it, and two, a crossbow is better for this kind of thing since you need to be pretty close anyway and the ability to hold the shot untill the right moment is useful for this purpose.

As far as troop command, there's certain troops that legitimately need to be in a formation, and hold that formation, to be effective (pikemen and spearmen for example as well as heavy infantry when cav starts charging).
Will troops be able to be ordered to hold a specific formation, without turning to face the enemy or anything? Can they advance in that formation while holding it? Will pikemen be able to brace and will it be possible and more common for them to switch to swords or something when fighting up close?
Will mass be a thing? As it is you can basically walk into infantry as cavalry and knock him down, when even a full charge into a block of heavy infantry would just kind of fail after the first line or two as the infantry braced themselves and held their comrades in place.

Right but archers are super fucking light infantry and can't reasonably brace. If mass is implemented, an Imperial cataphract should slam right through even a huscarl line but light horsemen might grind to a stop as the mail-wearing infantry brace for impact.

Heavy cavalry will always be strong in field battles, while our goals remain to provide an accurate simulation. We have done lots of work on AI, so I think it's fair to say that you might encounter better resistance than exists in Warband but ultimately lots of Heavy Cav are going to serve you well in the open field.

What we can and (probably) will balance is how easy it is to amass and maintain those forces. Also, being 200 years before WB, you can expect top tier cav to be less tanky, for the most part.

You're asking a lot of detail here, and I really can't go that deep into it but we have talked about physics and mass playing a role, as well as demoing some of its effects at the PC Gamer Weekender. We have done work to improve weapon selection AI... I'm not going to make a guarantee that they'll always get things right because AI is still AI but certainly we're aiming for them to a do a better job most of the time.

Our focus has never really been on having these tight, systemic formations. Priority is certainly on making sure that battles feel involving, believable and working on AI to make most troops do their best in the chaos. That's all I'll say.

I've re-enabled a feature from .808 and earlier versions of mount&blade for the next version of dickplomacy. Now you can have your companions wait around and hold troops on your behalf in case you have to chase down a party of 4 looters or something
