Well, I signed up for demo day.

Wrote down three simple game ideas, dropped two and made 2/3rds of a character model. Still needs lower arms and hands, some kinda backpack thrust thing. and six weapons (Three melee, Three ranged)

Then rigging which should be less obnoxious since nothings organic, so most bone weights will be 100%, set limits on rotations. And do some animations.

Bring all this into Unity, and see just how much fast we can get.

I kinda really just wanna know how to make QTE heavy experiences to be honest, I very much enjoyed Vanquish and Ninja Blade

Trying to decide what kind of look/additude I want for my dancing girl protagonist. Also drew in giant djinn companion anon suggested in the last thread because that shit is hilarious to me.

Setting would be that a prince asks for the dancer's hand in marriage, she accepts because she thinks his handsome retainer is the prince, but he turns out to be an ugly fat fuck so she breaks out of the palace PUZZLE PLATFORMER style guided by some mythical creature. I have some ideas about treasures she would find and mechanics that would go with them but keeping that to myself until I'm sure I know how to do it.

It's end up being pixels hit with lots of cute/lewd animations. I want to practice visuals for this project.

Do people like sassy/done with this shit more or spunky/happy?

I currently have a fairly simple equation where directional acceleration is a function of the difference in forward vector direction from the direction of velocity, plus an upward lift from velocity.

Looks good enough at a glance, but doesn't handle the more subtle effects of lift.
Might take the plunge and write a proper dynamic lift system, could be a fun-killer if it hampers the control of the simpler option in an fly/run based shooter.

tl;dr incoming:

In the current build, there isn't much point to moving. Attack range works by columns. Every character in the fight has the same weapon, a carbine that can shoot to the first three enemy columns. Characters jump to the front of the grid to attack. This doesn't do anything, it's just an animation to keep them from visually shooting any teammates that happen to be front of them.

But just answering your question gave me an idea to make movement more interesting. Attack range could consider friendly columns as part of the range. Then I could add a territory struggle to the battles. You could push back their front line, grab their empty front column and then you'd have 5 columns and they'd have 3. Then you could have your front liners chew up their snipers and medics on their back column.

Hopefully I can have that working more smoothly and clearly in time for Demo Day 10.

I always end up spending time on implementing typical engine dev things, like map loader, resolution independency, resource saving methods even if the game runs solid on 60 fps so there's no reason to it, I polish my physics with no end even if there's absolutely no game play other than jumping around. Does anybody know why Unity might not respect Alpha when calling Graphics.drawmeshnow?

My first guess is good writing, tho. Make the characters and their problem, situation relatable for the player, so he/she can really feel and relate to them, and feel the same horrors. Now that I have a minimap, I figured I need a hotkey to open the full map. Viewing the map doesn't pause the game. Off the top of my head, mm6 doesn't display the results of Wizard's Eye on the main map (only the minimap), but I thought I should draw the indicators on the main map too. There are two types of random I used in my game
1) True random (as much as pseudo RNG allows)
2) Pre-determined random aka randomness that will always be the same as long as input seed is the same.

I accidentally used pre-determined random for choosing what event will happen.

Yes, the right looks far better than the left, as long as you have another way to describe those icons.

Maybe when you pick up fuel it pops up a "+10 Fuel (icon)" above your head momentarily to associate that icon with that resource, even if it already painfully obvious.

Gor platformers and shooters it feels more natural to touch the item and get it, like you would do on Castlevania, but on a beat em up, it feels more natural to press a button, like you would do on Streets of Rage, and on a rpg, if you have a limited spaced inventory you need to have the choice to pick the item or not.

Comsic Castaway - too slow, boring, can't find a gun and screws don't seem to do anything

Space Kujo - I want to like this, but no matter how many exceptions I put in my antivirus (BitDefender TotalSec 2015) it marks executable as potential threat and removes it, freezing the game after a minute or so. Will try again later.

Also, on windows 10 all games so far are by default blocked by windows app screen or whatever security shit they came up with now, but I don't blame the devs here

I think I've done it. I've made a space physics model that successfully reconciles "fun" physics of games like Freelancer with real life orbital mechanics.

You can have as much magic space drag as you want, but still capture that 'nerdy feeling' from pulling off something roughly analogous to a Hohmann Transfer. Planetary motion actually *is* realistic, a degenerate case of the model that happens to line up with reality.

At the same time, spaceships can't slam into each other at ridiculous orbital velocities. Two nearby objects will behave in a "fun", naval combat-like way, with friction dominating most of the relative motion. Once you're done with your Star Trek knife fight, you can perform a "Fauxmann Transfer" and gracefully coast to the other side of the solar system.

/v/lancer only makes it good because it has the Trent Missile, which is a super high damage "torpedo" with a launch speed of something like 0.01km/s. I think they also boosted the power of mines in general, and had the micro and macro missiles that also benefitted way more from drive-by behaviour than base game weapons did.

If you're in normal driving mode, you'll bleed speed if you let off the throttle, but it's an explicit braking behaviour since it's an Ace Combat style "you always go kinda fast and the 'forward' key is your afterburner" rather than a true throttle. not sure exactly how ftl works but i'd make a couple random points and put them into an univisited container. then make a second container for visited planets and add in the starting point. then i'd make a 3rd container for candidates. then i'd iterate over all the unvisited ones and i'd move any point that's within a certain distance and to my right into the candidates folder and any point that's not to my right but within the same distance into the visited folder. then use the candidates folder to make widgets and let the player chose his destination. after that, move all candidates to visited and iterate over unvisited. if there's no candidates consider the screen cleared and make a new one.

Here is how I did it when I tried and how I suspect FTL did it:

-Drop nodes randomly, move nodes if they fall too close to another node (so they're not right on top of each other)
-Connect all nodes to the node closest to them
-Connect all nodes that are within a certain distance from each other
-Connect all groups of nodes that aren't on the main path to the node on the main path that is closest (main path starts with the origin node, where the player would start)

I tweaked the migration a little bit. I gave it small random fluctuations, most noticable in the end of the WebM, after the simulacra finds its balance. (Pop growth is turned off)

Also, there must be some sort of bug or oversight in the code, because the balance should theoretically make all those white circles the same size.

Character Creation 101

I like my characaters to be born of some deeper meaning. Like, if they have a name, look up the meaning of that name. Word origins, Latin roots and shit like that. Go from there. Google Image search is a great way to build a visual reference library for your characters as well.
What motivates your characters? Why do they do what they do? Look at Mario. He goes into pipes... he's a plumber. He wears work coveralls because that's what a plumber might wear. He doesn't wear armor... even though he fights many enemies. Research professions and what the work uniform looks like and use this to influence design.

I'm making a shmup.

When you kill an enemy they will explode into colourful shards. Which option do you think sounds better.

A: The shards explode out for a second, then get sucked into the player.

B: The shards explode out then slowly go down, and the player has to be within a certain range for them to be sucked into you.

I personally think while B is more challanging, A sounds like it would be pretty satisfying, so I'm not sure.

Resuming work on combat rules. Attacks store a reference to a Damage, which currently have bounding box or radius, damage amount, and flags for whether it damages a target only, and if it's melee or ranged.

For now, damages are never removed from the game, so I can visualize where they are. In the future, damages will have the option of being permanent, so that I can have damaging volumes (lava, acid, etc).

Gamejam is for the appstore tier gamespam style development. Useful for getting in the habit of finishing shit, but ultimately restricting the actual amount content (gameplay, art, story). The developer doesn't need a huge commitment to participate.

Demo Day seems to be a more serious thing. Kinda like an taste of full blown game development cycle. Developer can afford to make more out of their game. However, it requires a larger commitment aswell.

Making parts of the mesh dissapear. I just had to redo 2 animations (quite alot though) and instead manually shrinking the bones to like 0.1 and hiding them within the visible mesh.

I had an idea for a Wii U game based on asymmetrical co-op.
One player plays a traditional TPS but the map is full of traps, enemies hidden and no map.
The other player controls an heli and tell player 1 where to go, hoe to avoid enemies and traps etc and can even help killing enemies from above. Player 2 would be playing from the Gamepad

Google problems you come across, and asking for help in the thread doesn't always end well, but ask people about how they did something, if they show off a video. It's a bit of a narcissistic thing, but devs like to talk about how they do.
