I imagine the damage is low because it has a shield, but considering you can't even use the shield unless you have all the balls at your side that's not even useful.

On the other hand it's the best shield in the game afaik and sitting in an energy zone with it up is like infinite shielding, but the only time that would ever be practical would be for bosses, and it requires so much setup you'd be cutting into your damage when you could be dodging. Then on top of it I think you can only get them from t6 planets, meaning by the time you get them you should already be able to thrash all the bosses effortlessly...

Asteroid fields. There's still some gravity (and you can die if you fall too far off the bottom.)

Also the universe is fucking huge, so be sure to write down coordinates of places you want to visit on other characters.

Yes.
Basically the universe is a fuckhuge grid, that has systems randomly generated as you explore it. Once something is generated, it is saved to your computer and will not be generated again unless you delete the universe.
Starbound uses the same universe for all characters on the computer, so you can travel to locations other characters have been to (by coordinates, you'll never find them manually) and find everything as they left it.

Is there any way to design an airlock such that it not only keeps water from getting into one side, but pumps any water inside back into the submerged side? Adult poptop is pretty awesome, it tanks really well even with no collar on. Haven't tried collars on it yet to see if it can do real damage or tank even better with them. Lumoth with an oblivious collar is pretty useful for light. Damage 3 fenix or whatever the fox creature on fiery planets is does like 80 damage per hit with its flamethrower attack, which hits several times a second, so while its range can be a bit limited it melts shit that's ground-based. Medics heal you but that's redundant with staves that heal you anyway. Those are the only useful ones I've found though.
