Few things to remember:
>First foundation must be placed as centered and as foward as possible
>Beds must be placed before the ceiling
>You have to use thatch foundations at first otherwise you wont be able to snap walls

Ballistas are decent because they are cheap and can fire chain bolas as well as typical ammo. Cannons are okay because they can damage metal and can't be shot down by turrets. Miniguns and rocket turrets are okay but they are expensive.

How do I get foundations to be level with the starting platform of my raft?

Place a pillar or foundation
then, place another pillar snapped off of the first at a slightly lower elevation which should be fairly apparent when you try it
continue to do so (demolishing previous levels as you go) until you reach the desired height and then place your actual foundations down, snapped to the lower base you made which can then be removed if need be

It might sound a bit complicated but it's simple enough when you try it out, there are youtube videos on "sinking foundations" if you need to visualize it

Private pve server with friends, I mostly do what I feel like. We've been playing primitive plus recently so I've mainly been getting disappointed when stuff doesn't work including my attempt at placing lumber pillars earlier, it just eats it from your inventory, same with the new arrow types when used in a crossbow, eaten but not actually shot out.

They're almost all the same and don't have a ton of space but you can build in such a way that you have a few oil/crystal that respawn inside if you want
takes a behemoth gate to close off the front pretty easy but everything will take a lot more damage than a normal base due to multipliers
I personally want to try building a base on the icebergs since there's a few different ways to get water tames in, but it's the disadvantages of the ice without the bonuses really
