my colonists are bugging out with the ExtendedStorage mod for some reason.
For example, I'll set an empty Fabric Hamper to Muffalo Leather only. A colonist will come bring a stack to the hamper, then stand in place while acting like they intend to haul a nearby stack of Turkey Leather.

Threadly reminder that as long as you have a room that all other rooms connect to, one single cooler can heat your entire base, all you need to do is adjust the vent in the diagram shown to increase or decrease the heat in the rooms

You should move your base south towards the geothermal vent. Use it for power and heat, then you can deconstruct the cyrochambers walls to fortify the small northen exit. After that, you can focus on defending the south.

In the mean time, place a bunker in the north west and east of your old base to give you temporary defense solution.

Stonecutting is a must even without a mountain base. Walls and whatnot made of stone walls not only look nicer and make your people less whiny bitches, but they also won't catch on fire like wood or steel.

Anyone else think its a bit presumptuous having the game call its different modes 'storytellers'? All they really do, for all their lavish character art, is change the frequency of pirate raids. One of their lovingly named and illustrated 'storytellers' is just a glorified RNG button ffs.

I'll be the judge of whether Rimworld produces emergent storylines or not, the game cant just tell me that its a story.

Why do every single complain about this game has to mention the graphics or illustrations? T should have stated with massive red letters that this is not dwarffortress. Thats why i play on basebuilder. Much comfier to have a dedicated security team that handles raids so my workers dont have to risk their life.
Raids scale in an insane way, especially with mods that have unbalanced wealth values.

the characters and art add a nice touch to it...
but seriously they do have differences:
normal mode will progressively throw challenges while giving rewards in the mean time
chill mode makes the challenges more far apart while randy may throw anything at anytime...

the storytelling literally checks how well you're doing, meaning it will throw harsher challenges on you when you're chill, but may also throw you some bones when you're struggling.

The AI director in L4D is also known as a storyteller. It's designed not to be random, but to look at how you are progressing, and address things accordingly. Get a surplus of food? You might get hit with an event that causes you to burn food. Colonists have been on the verge of starvation and any day might be your last? The AI director might decide to cut you some slack and give you a food drop pod. All Tynan did was personify these directors since observing the way the game is going, and choosing events accordingly already is humanlike.

Yeah but the way "normal" scales you are pretty much forced to play very defensively all the time.
If you scale it down a little you will have a lot more options. Combat is pretty much the same except you dont have to send out everyone at once. Buildings can be a lot nicer which is what im goin for.

I used to play on hard until a few alphas ago, having a defensive checkpoint on all four corners of my buildings with sandbags n shit ruined the look.

Scars stay, you get them if you dont treat something properly, bleeding is stopped by treatment, dont know what are you missing there.
Missing nose and other shit like that needs mods to be fixed, extended surgery should have it covered, havent used it in a while but i guess you have to build a replacement nose first then do an operation.
One of the mods has a "dermal regenerator" that removes scars.

Extended surgery, I dunno, seems ok but his mods are a bit buggy as well, doesn't deal with prothesis

I've always used white lights for my medical bay. Not sure if it matters, but light level effects the skill roll for most things. Also make sure your doctor has full manipulation and conciseness.

Try roofing over your sandbags, so they are in shadow. Also, inter-space your sandbags with some hard cover, like stone walls, as that gives superior cover.

Set your stone chunk dumping area just outside the sandbags, so assholes can't stand there and they get slowed down approaching.

The new resource is needed for advanced bionics and takes FUCKING FOREVER to make, as you have to make the new metal out of gold and plasteel at a smelter then turn that into advanced components at a component bench, THEN build the bionics out of it.

The ability to make prosthesis and bionics is great, but the advanced stuff is a very tiresome grind.

As we approach the peak of the Summer month, only two colonists remain in this insane base. Shortly after his Marriage to Tiffy, Ikusawa was killed by a bandit raid. His corpse was vaporized in a stray mortar shot.

A Thrumbo wandered in, and in dire need of food, we began the hunt. Tiffy tried to kill it with a Thrumbo Horn while Quartertooth shot mortars, but she was rendered unconscious and the beast raged up to my home. Quartertooth attempted to hold it off with an assault rifle and fell, while her husband Pete was killed heroically trying to cut on my Improvised Turret defenses.

The Thrumbo destroyed my turrets and began to wander off, but was eventually killed by blood loss. Two colonists remain, with plentiful food.

Winter's approaching fast. We've built the foundation for a small stone-walled hamlet and moved out of the big community-barn that served us thus far. Aside from some pessimists, spirits are high despite a steady pemmican diet and harsh weather. The lack of defense and weaponry is a glaring problem though.

Alright..

Tip 1) If you want to have an easy start pick somewhere with a very long, or year round, growing period. That isn't vital, but it's useful

2) Temperate Forest or Borieal Forest are easiest, as they provide nearly limitless fertile soil and wood.

3) You can grow food inside. This is far more reliable then outdoor growing in most areas, especially anywhere with cold winters. To grow inside you need to build over a 11x11 patch of fertile soil, put a grow lamp in the middle, then get the temperature up. Cool is fine, but freezing is not.

If you are in a cold place, put it next to a geothermal vent or at least aim the hot side of your freezer's coolers into it.

The lamp only needs to run for about half the day. Connecting it directly to a solar panel outside with no batteries will be fine.

4) To defend yourself, make bunkers. This is a 4x4 block, with walls made of altnerating stone and sandbags. Surround them with a dump zone set to take stone cunks and build a roof over. This will make it dark inside and let your colonist shoot out at enemies, while enemies will be slowed down closeing in.

Put deadfall traps anywhere that would offer good cover to shoot into your bunkers, and torches to light up the areas people might approch by.

Winter continues to take it's toll. We had to slaughter the Emus. Meanwhile the surrounding forest seems to be devoid of any life, save the occasional hare or timber wolf. A couple of new recruits joined, and we took a useful pirate prisoner. But the morale is dangerously low.

Well this certainly seems to be it... The poor mood set off a tantrum spiral. As soon as anyone were strong enough they went berserk and walked from bed to bed and stabbed the recovering colonists. Ok folks, this time i've purchased an army of elephants and i have three turrets, and suddenly an entire tribe of ooga boogas showed up.

I do the same thing with sleeping pods, I'll place lamps inside the area and seal it off, put one colonist inside to open and run out the door
last time it was 4 heavily armed colonists that were enraged and started beating the lamps until they caught fire and then everything caught fire inside the room causing them to pass out.

I have the opposite problem. Every time I finish a colony, I find a bunch of new mods that makes me start a new mega-project on a different biodome.

Some crazy thing I did was trying to weaponise steam vents for a heat defense system, training an army of bionic pigs, wargs and cobras and terraforming Death Valley. Oh, and I recreated the New Citadel from Wasteland 2 complete with Desert rangers and crazy robots.

these separate freezers don't need a intake, they bring down the duct temp to the desired point, and then you use outlets on your room to output whatever desired temperature is

Do what i did, as soon as i fucking got a manhunt boomrat in the morning, i reinstalled every single bed of every colonist in my kitchen/common room where everyone eats.

I made a forbidden door and just removed every job from them except cleaning and cooking.

Motherfuckers just chit-chatted, played chess and even threw a party there while complaing that they were sharing rooms and cramped space.

But jesus fucking christ, a caravan came to visit and it was a fucking massacre and i got blamed for it.

Still to this day i always keep beds for reserve in the kitchen and common rooms.

ALWAYS BUILD FLOORS as you dig, just pour concrete or use wood it's fast and easy
Replace rock with real walls as often as possible as you dig.

These three things will not only greatly improve moods but will also prevent infestations. If an infestation DOES happen and you don't think you can handle it, just wall it off until you want to deal with it.

Regardless, from a gameplay standpoint, you can always put on better clothes to avoid freezing to death, but you can only get so naked in the summer. It's also much easier to heat spaces than it is to cool them.

if you played on that seed with a climate cycle map condition (years have climate trends as well as seasons) and got a heat wave in summer during a hot year it'd mean never going outside and needing 10+ coolers for a small-medium sized complex

it only takes a few hours at 150+ to start knocking out the poorly dressed; then a few more hours to knock out those without heat survival traits; then a few more hours to take out the remainder
150-160F or so is about the peak heat of a climate cycle map with max base temperature before considering heat waves

Tip: Coolers & Heaters!

You can use both in conjunction with each other! Just remember to match the temperature with the cooler and heater or they have to constantly fight each other to change the temperature.

If a cooler or a heater doesn't have to fight to keep an even temperature it means it uses less power! So if you have a 1:1 ratio of coolers and heaters to battle cold snap / heat waves it means that only one set of heaters or coolers actually has to work to keep the place warm or cool.

Extra tip: Vents

Vents act as a violent way to distribute heat and cold. Temperature doesn't expand easily to a huge open area but with the use of vents and "vent hallways" you can transport huge amounts of heat to other areas.

i can never get more than 4, maybe 5 colonists at a time. i start with the 3, then one will join either randomly or i'll rescue them from the fuckos chasing them, but those are both super rare. for some reason, when someone goes berserk, my colonists somehow grow boxing gloves on their hands and they're rarely if ever deadly in taking down a berserk colonist, but during a raid these fuckers tear through flesh and bone with their bare hands and murder every single raider that doesn't flee.
the one prisoner i've caught in my current colony died a day later from infection because i just started and the prison was a dirty stone hut that was there when i got there

Cannibalism in this game isn't even a negative trait. If anything, it's one of the best. Psychopathic Cannibal runs are ridiculously easy, just because you can fucking organ harvest everyone, and then chop what's left up for dinner. It makes raids basically just be giant buffets.

Actually dev mode caps out at a max size. If you summon a max size raid with dev mode and survive it, the dropped loot counts towards colony wealth and triggers like eleven more raids simultaneously and a couple random events.

I am confus.

I had a colonist being chased by pirates event and offered her safety. However, she was far away and too slow and they shot her down. I then get the message that they'd decided to kidnap who they can and leave.

Well, most of them did. Except Nixon and his two buddies. Nixon blew himself up with a grenade, open a hole in the wall and revealing a small area that his two friends are in the process of mining out. But why?

Ok I need some suggestions, I want to start a new colony.

This is my 1st ever, got this far, but im on the easiest difficulty so raids are legitimately just 1 person and I picked year round growing.

I did start as Tribal though.

What should I do for my next game? What difficulty?

dont put dumping stockpiles inside your walls; put them as far away from your base as is convenient
if you're gonna box up a geothermal vent like that you also need to use steel walls because the moment a heat wave comes along the wooden walls will start bursting into flame

I don't feel likes its optimized, the hallways taking too much space, I actually decide to stretch the freezer to the left instead of rooms, that way I can place more rooms below it and have only a single hallway

Heats can work Indoors (Unroofed) at reduced efficency. They have no effect on Outdoors.

Keep him, make him do ~5 dusters and he'll be 10th level crafter in a few days. Make him do another 10 dusters and you'll have an easy lvl 20 crafter for some leather/cloth that you can sell to merchants for 200-600 bux each.
