At the start of the game Spain has a tiny navy that can be easily defeated by a big frigate stack, not that they ever send it to SEA, and the only land units on the Philippines are their colonial recruits which amount to about 5 brigades which it is possible to destroy with sufficient irregulars. My best in a recent version of HPM is 1886 but I blobbed into Japan for literacy and got lucky with the Taiping Rebellion and the RP events, I think 1890 or 1895 is more typical when not blobbing into Japan. Basically too late to be much fun because you still can't commit to anything until after the Warlord Era, by the time you're secure in your borders there are only about 30 years left to actually do stuff and you still can only barely compete with the GPs due to army/navy techs.

if you have a good hold on trade always build manufactures. while a large investment, they are one of the few way to increase the wealth of a trade node, pair them with production buildings for more dosh. temples go where there is more than .10 more wealth (depending on where you are playing, if your France don't bother with less than 15 but Timurid can go as low as .08). its viable, but that is a lot of castles to maintain. without doing the 5 F's fortification have rarely saved me and there are better ways to just avoid wars that are that bad. manpower is usually built were it gets about average for the region i control. so in France only over 500, but with the Manchu, 350 is good to get. build trade center where ever the bonus is x>1. I've never really bothered with the naval buildings or regiment camps, mainly because if i have the money to do so then the marginal gain for doing it is to insignificant to my empire to matter. special building are pretty niche. while the university seem like a free building, unless you're rolling in mp it is functionally useless.
