Extra levels at start in DaS2 are effectively free and don't reflect on Soul Memory. A Cleric starting at Lv14 has the same starting soul memory as a Deprived at Lv1.

And then on to stats. A Knight is Level 13. A Bandit is Level 11. So the Knight has 2 more stat points and doesn't have to pay for them.

The Bandit has 1 INT and 8 FTH. The Knight has 3 INT and 6 FTH. So the Bandit and the Knight use the same amount of stats spread across those stats, but the Knight by default has enough intelligence to interact with Straid.

Players usually have less dark resist. And since there are no good natural dark weapons and you can't change flame spear and locks damage type, as well as almost all of your pyros being fire damage (I only use black flame, some do like serpent I guess), you'll have a better time if you have two types of damage to swap around.

From decided to bring back buffstacking and balance it by simply rendering 99% of buffs useless in pvp.

The only body buffs that gives their full benefit in pvp are Tears of Denial, Carthus Beacon, Power Within and the hp regen spells. Everything else, even GMB, gets shafted with special pvp values.

Basically, From really didn't want faith to be good.

Do glaives and similar weapons have a sweet spot of which you can parry? I either fail or partial parry, had to resort to bs.
Also, is wielding long reach weapons the only solution to counter all the spacing?

The whole game feels like it took them like 3 minutes to """"balance"""" things out, there some things that straight up don't make any sense at all.

Like animations/weapon arts for example. Take Smough Hammer, it's Perseverance skill it's so slow and badly timed with the rest of the moveset animations, that you might as well just use the massive hyperarmor granted by a simple R1.

Let's hope future DLCs/patches make thing better.

In pve, poise works fine. It's balanced to be weaker than dark souls 1 so you can't just indefinitely poisetank things, and many enemies have a slow and clearly telegraphed attack that is unpoisable so as to force a reaction from you. Full havels and RoG still allows you to literally slow-walk through some areas of the game without being staggered, though.

In pvp, poise damage is amplified greatly and all rolling attacks are unpoisable. However, the active animations of most ultra weapons (including halberds) halve the amount of poise damage they take as a sort of psuedo-hyperarmor. This can also resist the stagger of otherwise unpoisable attacks, but only large weapons have it.

Sunlight has the strongest HA and is literally unbreakable.
Saint's has the weakest HA and breaks in 2 hits from a straightsword or 1 hit from anything bigger
Every other talisman has the same HA and is generally strong enough for any purpose. Their HA can resist two R2s from any ultra weapon, and it;s generally not possible for a single player to attack enough to break the HA in the time it takes to complete the casting of a spell. Canvas is the highest spell buff talisman with this standard version of the WA, and generally the best one for pvp.

In all honesty, sunlight probably is better, since sunlight spears do so much damage, the extra damage probably isn't important.

The Covenants in 3 were imo good.
All of them had a gameplay purpose and all of them were supported by existing or new lore.

There was no completely redundant covenant like Princess Guard or Covenant that requires humanities to level up in but doesn't allow you to consistently invade.

As long as you upgrade your talisman and are actually leveling faith, lightning spear will do enough damage to be worth casting earlygame. Once you kill Arby's Watchers you can run to get lightning stake, which is god-tier for pve and will basically cover all of your casting needs until endgame. On my faith playthrough I even killed Yhorm just by slamming stakes into him until he keeled over.

Against anything resistant to lightning or vulnerable to bleed, Gnaw and Dhorys' Gnawing are very strong. They bleed anything that isn't bleed-immune in 1-2 casts and dark damage is good against anything lightning isn't.

The closest thing From has done to a covenant not being horrible is probably the Chaos Servant covenant, but it was still sort of shrug-worthy.

My additions to Covenants :

"Aldritch Faithful":
The Aldritch (or the Deacons) fight is two tiered and to get access to Aldritch a mini bossfight activates where the game will summon an Aldritch Faithful to act as his champion and you can only pass to Aldritch after defeating his champion which if you're offline is Irithyll equivalent of Sword Master or an online player selected from Faithfuls. When you clear the champion, you won't have to fight him again if you want to refight Aldritch. You won't get a Soul item though, you'll get a key that you can use to unlock the shortcut to Aldritch.

Situational swaps and other things to replace spells with could be black serpent, healing miracles, warmth, boulder heave and iron flesh. You can also try less common ones.
Weapons should all be dark infused (chaos for PvE).
They include:
RHH, CCS, LKS, Estoc/Rapier, AGS, deep corvian knife, etc. GFS and Witch locks are good too, of course.
You can also try moving around point to dex and str to meet the base requirements of things like the carthus shotel or try less common but good scaling weapons, such as the plow, corvian greatscythe, or the worse str/pyro weapons dropped from demons and gargoyles.

Desert Sorceresses are the least out-of-place because at least their presence is explained, and suits Mytha's vanity-theme. The giant ant in the Gutter is mentioned in some other item, description (corrosive urn, iirc) as being native to Jugo.

Benhart was probably just retconned into Jugo because they didn't want to leave it as just an offhand mention of like 2 item descriptions. Forget about fancier weapons, estoc is virtually everything you will ever fucking need for 1vs1. Use broadsword to quickly destroy the pve, or maybe thrall axe, that thing is surprisingly solid and fun to use despite the range.
When you lose 200 HP, swap life +3 to sage ring+2.
Keep sub-30% rolls. Fire surge kiting is immensely strong, and with sub-30% rolls you will laugh at carthus curved like it's nothing. Even washing pole users will have troubles dealing with you as surge has lingering hitbox allowing you to do a single tick and roll away when they go in with WDR1.
Vestiges are so fast it can be used to punish a lot of attempts to get in, punish parry spamming and punish sipping. Black flame>glove combustion combos are absolutely devastating.
Serpent is there just because there's nothing better. It's totally mediocre and not needed. You can try fire whip or something.
90% of quality builds are royally fucked against this setup. Even turtles will be annoyed if you're patient as dark estoc deals ~30 chip damage even against havel's shield and around 100 against top tier medium shields like black knight one.

The pilgrims across the gap are background assets. Their colouring is fixed because they do not interact with the engine's ambient lighting for that area. The entrance to Undead Settlement and Farron Keep are different maps. The "gap" is purely visual, and the opposite side is purely background assets in both parts.

Doesn't matter how much damage they do. They were less viable in 2 than in 3 due to how easy it was to dodge them. Not to mention you can stack resistances and they do no damage to you.

As for climax, that thing drained you of all of your souls. In a game with soul memory a one-cast spell isn't viable at all which is why like 1% of the playerbase used it.

Hexes and sorcery only killed bad players, especially in arena.
