It looks like lures spawn more often than not pokemon that are endemic to the area.

1. PokemonGo-Map V2 (the current release) is excessively worse about missing Pokemon, even in direct comparison to V1/the example.py versions.
2. There are certainly scanners out there that are near-instantaneous and don't drop Pokemon at such a frequent rate. Using the shitty spiral detection scanning that Go-Map and a few others do is just poor in practice.

As a casual player I find it impossible to ever take over a gym. However, I've seen level 2-5 gyms where I could beat the lowest CP defender but have no chance against the higher ones. Is there any reward for this whatsoever or should I just keep ignoring the gyms?

It is really easy to take over the gyms you can use 6 pokemon and you can attack it multiple times.

After you hold a bunch of gyms you press the shield button in the pokecoin menu and you get 10 pokecoins for each gym you hold for up to 100 pokecoins max. You can only press the button once every 21 hours.
