From what I remember P3 and P4 being in 2nd person was just Atlus USA's interpretation.
Japanese is weird and doesn't require you to be precise about this kind of stuff, I remember reading that it was generally accepted among Nipponese fans that both P3 and P4 are narrated by protagonists, and the way Yu's internal monogloue is written in Arena actually reflects that.

Maniac is harder than hard, with enemies dealing 50% more damage and a higher chance to be taken by surprise, but controlling your party removes a lot of the headaches they bring. It's also easier to get One More in P3P than in FES.

I'd say Hard on FES, I replayed it recently and it actually took me by surprise how rough it can get.

That being said, some of the earlier bosses in P3P are made harder due to the changes in combat.

Like the first floor 2 bosses, you can't just knock them down and let them miss their turns anymore, you have to make them dizzy and you can only do it to one at at a time, so you can't completely avoid getting attacked like you can in FES.

Or like how Rampage Drive can get an extra turn with Mazio unless Yukari guards the whole fight, which can instantly fuck you over. You also can't spam Cadenza, cause you only have 3 of them until I think June. You can get a couple more off of Tanaka, but they still have limited use.

But P3P smooths out after a while, and overall I think it's still easier than FES.

Though FES is only hard cause you can't control your party members, so you're limited in the strategy you can use, which is just bullshit difficulty.
