I don't know, anon.
I see you giving a lot of praise for Nem, but I never see anyone playing it here and very few play it in general.
And my experiences with Nem have been seriously awful.
>>149698026
Not that anon but you aquire wands very rarely
>>149699856
I have a yugi man parked in trunk right now, being hard carried by his decks of summoning and destruction. I swear to you, he is stronger than we give him credit for. You just do a lighter version of a typical Invo melee dude build and you're cake. You're just locked into going TSO because your heavy investment in invo is useless outside of holy hand grenade.
Repostan in new thread >>149699565
how much Throwing to make Ruks hit reliably?
I hope everyone is doing their best today!!
>>149700329
For ruks, you want like 20 throwing. They'll be good after like 10 or so, but you want the delay to be low. Collect some javelins in the mean time, they're pretty good if you invest throwing.
>>149700135
>You're just locked into going TSO because your heavy investment in invo is useless outside of holy hand grenade.
That's assuming you even want to do Hell/Pan/Tomb.
I'll give him another try, but I'm still pretty leery of it.
>>149697850
I bet you can't win a 15 runer without using wands you wand shitter
>>149700704
I feel you. If you liked old Yugi, you probably won't like new Yugi all that much. Just make sure you invest your invocations early and heavily. Do the stupid MfGl of Qaz build, but with Yugi. He isn't the best god, but he does work and gives you some extremely dumb stuff. Like I said earlier, LITERAL PANLORDS to kill dyaks.
>>149701024
I was just going to go MfMo per the Mo buff, but basically the same thing.
>>149700948
Kek.
I don't really acquire wands particularly often either, seeing as I don't often have many wands identified by the time I read ?Acq.
I forgot to mention book and staff acquirement in that post, but oh well- he's dead now.
Anyone done much testing with the new jewellery acq or misc acqs?
>>149701795
I'm always scared to use ?acq on jewelry since most randart jewelry is hot garbage
I honestly like my Battlemage Ghost-Bro
What the hell were you guys saying that I need to learn how to melee in order to do Hell? Seems comfy here with a staff of power and a shit buckler
>>149703158
Some people know not the power of channeling.
>>149703158
You don't need to melee at all in the entire game. But some form of channeling is useful because you can't usually rest to full mana in Heck,
Best race for a filthy min-maxer in DCSS?
>>149703158
>90 MP
You're one of the few dudes who doesn't need it since you can actually blow your wad and still have 30 MP left.
>>149703953
But I always have to use SOB especially if my Iron shot+LCS doesn't hit at a critical point and I just happened to reach 50-60% manapool. 50% is always ALWAYS bad, he just happened to be almost dead that's why I didn't cast it.
>>149703953
>>149703158
Feels good that they finally took off that stupid MP cap.
>>149704347
How much is your SOB restoring anyway? How much HP does it take off?
Requesting a link to the DCSS commit where the explanation is that they added too much content without removing anything
>>149698929
>Full moon tonight
>Moon is clearly almost New
What is this shit
>>149705149
One to full MP and I don't even know why I'm still using a staff of power. It's painful if it's beyond 50% since it takes like ~60 hp restoring you to full mana but that may just be because I was wielding a staff of power for the rest of the game and 44-55 mp refilled is quite a lot.
>>149705687
It's a bizarre picture in pretty much every way.
Everything is wrong with it.
>>149703158
>>149704838
Does channelling scale with max MP? Or do you channel a fixed amount of mana each use if it succeeds?
>>149706080
It's not related to max MP.
http://crawl.develz.org/info/index.php?q=channeling
There is also http://crawl.develz.org/info/index.php?q=channel_magic
Which I think scales off of MP since it works with MPRegen.
>>149705695
>60 HP for full MP
Fucking hell that hurts. I wonder if its % based. That wouldn't be so bad if you had 260~ HP vs. 180.
>>149706657
Considering he has like 90 MP that's pretty fair.
>>149706657
That's why you'll always use it at 70-80% so you take off a negligible amount of HP. Something like 5-15 or even lower I think which is definitely ignorable
>>149707627
Oh I agree. But most of pan is a really odd balance of how many hellfires can I take if I get tormented once? How many after 2 torments? He basically does a torment lite if he gets into a dire situation with his MP, which definitely throws a lot of that off.
>>149707745
This sounds way better. I'll have to give SOB a shot, I haven't used it since .13 probably. Maybe on a VS. That sounds like one spicy meatball.
How do I into abyssal knight? No matter what, I end up dead within 3 levels and can never raise piety enough to unlock any power.
I also have trouble playing casters as a whole, though.
Finally found a Spellforged Servitor holy shit
let the games begin
how do I know how many artifacts have been created in a given game
>>149708473
Skill as a typical melee dude, with a small early investment into invocation. Once your melee is good and your defenses are ok, you can invest it a little more heavily. Your abilities won't really be all that great early on, they shine more right before lair and during your branch runes. Banish is super great for wrecking orb spiders, shock wasps and so on. Would you like to see a morgue for a 3 rune AK? I did one during the tourney.

Why is crawl such a clusterfuck stairdancefest?
every floor after D:12 or so is just a clusterfuck filled to the brim with enemies that you cant safely engage without alerting the whole level, leading you to <><><><> different stairs multiple times per floor

Just make a killbox. Sitting in a single tile surrounded by darkness is fun, right? :^)
>>149711604
I mean an artifact system like Nethack's. You know, only appear in special circumstances instead of treasure
Should I buy it? I'm currently using an AcFiCo cloak of elemental protection.
>>149711838
Some nethack artifacts appear as treasure though, don't they?
At which XLs does a demonspawn gains his mutations?
Can i, say, get a tier 2 facet as soon as i reach XL2 with much luck? Is there a specific pattern or is it literally random, but obeys the rule "2 tier 2, 1 tier 3, scales and a body part or three"?
>>149711115
just embrace it and play a loud axe-wielding dude
>>149711913
Depends on your resists. The first point of resistance is worth more than two speed because unresisted elemental breaths will likely kill you past like, fire hounds.
>>149712349
Random, but follows the general rule of what a DS should get OR you get monstrous.
I'm here at last, at the final boss room. I have to do this right and get my good mage diploma
>>149712560
So i can get fucking augmentation or a tier 3 facet as soon as level 2? Seems pretty broken.
>>149712248
Beyond the ones necessary to win the game, only the quest artifact, demonbane and the sunsword can appear without player intervention. Everything else must be named, wished or gifted.
>>149712730
Yeah. Or hooves 1.
>>149712871
No. Plenty of artifacts can spawn in shops or on the floor. They're just incredibly rare.
They can also of course spawn in bones levels.
Now all that is left is the extra stage Slime pits

>>149720653
Very standard linear dungeon crawler, but instead of a food clock you have to manage light and sanity. As your mind gets increasingly fucked up you get hallucinations, which start out as an annoyance but can eventually become dangerous.
It's a fun coffee break roguelike with great ideas, but it's sometimes too dependent on rng. In this pic I'm rocking an eternium sword that killed the end boss in one more hit, and those giants were definitely going to kill me in two. Sometimes you get so many sanity potions that you can just top off whenever you feel like it, and other times you'll go insane and there's nothing you can do about it.
In any case it's a fun game that doesn't take your whole life to play/master, unlike a certain graphical dungeon crawler.
>>149720836
Oh god my eyes
>Your armoured boots disintegrate!
NOOOOOOOOO
>>149720323
There were no situations where I could use it against her without blowing myself up. So yeah, not useful.
How come we never talk about Infinite Cave Adventure anymore? Like a year ago it was one of the more popular games in the general
>>149721324

Madness sounds alright though.
>>149719571
I started to say "That wasn't so bad" but it was. It was really bad. Ilsuiw or whatever her name is is still wandering around somewhere after fucking my shit up on three separate occasions, and there's a pack of death yaks that I don't really want to engage all at once just to the south.
>>149722685
It's funny, I'm always on the lookout for dudes I can confuse next to water or lava, but it just didn't occur to me to do it to the death yaks because the entire level is water. Time to get some free ogres I guess.
>>149722848
FYI those yaks are there because of their herdsman, who is a much harder unique than the mermaid.
>>149723089

Wandspam saved the day. She actually wasn't that bad when there weren't a bunch of javelins flying all over the place, but I had to be careful about the water elementals because the engulf would fuck me right up.
Every time there was a merfolk avatar I had to use a consumable. High MR, summons tons of suicide bombers that you don't seem to be able to dodge the damage from. Luckily, trees are immune to drowning, and I had 5 lignification.
>>149723965

I was hoping to just avoid him, but I stepped in an invisible alarm trap and he woke up. I'm just gonna go for it.
>>149724137
I upgraded from a legitimate copy of 8 and it wouldn't accept my key, and I'm too lazy to bitch at customer support or figure out what I need to do to make it appear like it's activated legitimately. If it starts actually inconveniencing me I'll reconsider.
>>149724689
That went unreasonably well. Had to kill about 9 other things while fighting him, but he took forever to actually make a copy of me, and my EV rolls went pretty well. Fulminant prism continues to be a strong spell.

Did they make emperor scorpions easier? Usually they're a big threat.

>>149736276
it was 3 floors of tabbing through normal trash orcs and 1 floor of danger
>>149736461
Tabbing through normal trash orcs is fun because at that point you get to see how much more powerful your character has become. These little orc squads of priest/wizard/warrior are extremely dangerous in the beginning of the dungeon.
Is summon forest any good? Having some extra bodies would definitely be helpful, but I've never used the spell before.
>>149736712
well the dcss devs are opposed to tabbing through trash
>>149736756
No, it's bloat and it should be removed.
Anyone have an idea how I'm supposed to hit anything in this game?
>>149736712
>Tabbing through fodder is fun
Boy, would you have loved .12-.13 era DCSS.
>>149737052
I can't tell if you're shitposting or giving an actual opinion, friend.
>>149736756
I wasn't particularly impressed with it.
You only get one dryad, and can't resummon until the duration is over even if it dies.
The vines do okay damage (once they come out, seems to take a few turns), but the dryad itself is basically helpless.
It also creates a bunch of shallow water and can't be cast in corridors, which makes it annoying to use.
>>149736756
It can be fairly strong, but it definitely needs a little help in the ways of extra bodies from other summons to really shine. Good for clearing lair/first/second rune and drops off rapidly once enemies can kill the dryad from range.
>>149737519
>>149737672
Thanks. Probably not worth getting the spellpower up on it if I'm in vaults, then?
>>149737871
You'd want another spell easily. Something like mana vipers or the big XXX.
>>149737095
shit like dogs (or zombie dogs, or zombie children) are small and hard to hit compared to full-size zombies
but once you hit enough big zombies your melee skill will go up
>>149737332
It's not generally fun, but it's fun in this case because it demonstrates how much the character has progressed.
>>149737519
the advice I heard is that it's pretty shit on its own but the vines are ok for fucking around with enemies while your OTHER summons kill them
>>149738207
Think my character was pretty shit, started with no skills except thick skinned and construction, so maybe that's why.
>>149738019
I used mana vipers once, loved it. Absolutely phenomenal spell. I might just say fuck it and get freezing cloud, though. Cheistats is pretty strong.
>>149738357
don't spend points on starting skills if you can spend them on stats or traits, it's a huge waste
It doesn't expire huh, so I could just grab a ton of gold and come back here anytime. The elves truly are the greatest ally
>>149738751
You have a ton of gold now though.
>>149737504
I'm not your friend, mate.
>>149738589
Damn, can't even survive a single zombie.
Also what's wrong with starting skills?
>>149738798
>>149738798
2500 gold is not safe, something like 3500-4000 should be enough
>>149738447
Freezing cloud is a really solid pickup. You always want 1 cloud spell that you resist if you can help it. Blocking enemy clouds is always great.
>>149739397
what's wrong is that you're becoming permanently weaker by losing out on stats and traits in exchange for being temporarily slightly stronger
every skill can be raised in game through reading, and every one except computers can be raised relatively easily through actual use as well
buying skills makes you better at surviving the very early game but once you're good enough to do that anyways they're really just lost points
>>149738345
It'd need to be absolutely amazing for me to want to use it.
The open space restriction is really annoying, so you'll often find yourself having to retreat or just not use it. Fighting in a large open space rather than a corridor is often not ideal either.
>>149740218
Its what you want when you're a summoner tho.
>>149739789

Well it sounds like you're doing okay so far.
You could wait. You could also just spend the enchants on your best 1H mace, then make sure to check Elf:2 Hall of Blades for an eveningstar once you've finished Depths and V:1-4. Then bless either the eveningstar or the nicest dwhip.
Blessing adds some enchantment and even a +3 holy eveningstar is quite good.

So, how do you kill Dispater as a Vehumet DEFE blaster ?
He's immune to most element and I'll run out of MP before I can kill him with Iron Shot / Fire storm.
Has teleported and wasted several tele scrolls several times.
It seems crawl is much easier if you play as pure melee dude.

Just tried Tornado in wizard mode.
This spell is fucking broken.
Usually when I'm surrounded I positioned myself with Controlled Blink (8 MP) and used Firestorm (9 MP).
That's great against enemies without fire resistance.
But I have plenty of problems against fire-immune enemies.
Previously, I tried to use Shadow Creature or Iron shot to kill them.
With Tornado, I can cast it anywhere, it's like tabber's equivalent of Cleansing Flame.
Just go to Dis:7, with Tornado my MP is never below Maximum.
Fire-immune enemies ? Cast tornado, walk away, watch them die and your MP is reset to max.
Tornado really doesn't give a fuck about enemies' resistance.
>>149753303
Yeah, I admit I'm still a noob when I play a caster
>>149755459

All G and J become neutral to the player, and also become 'hungry' in that they seek out mundane items on the floor to eat. As of recent versions they also eat items randomly on other levels (than the one you are on) iirc.
You get an ability to temporarily pause jelly movement in case you see some loot you want, though.
Jellies eating items also give you nutrition and healing with sufficient piety.

I wish to rub anon's tummy wummy.
>No roguelike with multiplayer similar to a souls game and the final boss has to be fought like the ur dragon from DD
>>149794504
See, now that would be an undertaking from hell. Making a good roguelike multiplayer is a nightmare if you want to keep turn-based, for one.
But, something sorta similar that I liked (needs WAY more content though) was Necropolis
>>149788453
Sil is cool becaude it's concise both thematically and gameplay-wise. It's a very tight game and everything is there for a reason.
If you are against minimalism or heavily prefer games with plenty of fluff or generally high content it might not be for you. It suffers from a lack of replayability unfortunately.
On the other hand the skill system is fun, novel and allows flexibility while rewarding strategic planning. It has interesting AI for a roguelike. Every upgrade feels significant and worthwhile (though some of the abiliies are very niche). It is also pretry immersive. Even as someone who doesn't think much of roleplay, I find myself vividly imagining some of the action in Sil.
It's really enjoyable and absolutely worth a try.

someone get these fucking bugs off me
>>149797216
>Sil is basically a super barebones roguelike with "repeatedly bump into monsters" replaced with "repeatedly step around monsters"
kek, I agree. Yet virtually every other roguelike is like that. Otherwise you have "repeatedly avoid monsters at all costs" or "repeatedly use item x to kill monster y" and so on
>>149799362
Which is why roguelikes are a shit genre as a whole. The ideas laid out by rogue and refined by angband and nethack were fantastic, but putting them in a better framework (such as diablo did) simply suits them better. In the case of diablo the focus is on the loot pinata aspect, but of course other aspects can easily be leveraged into other full genres that will benefit infinitely more than roguelikes.
Do i train armour like a motherfucker for crystal plate? I'm afraid it's too much of an investment right now, and it would nuke my already low EV, but is it worth focusing exp into? And how much is enough to not be raped in the face while using it?

Not true though. Archers will move away from you if you move towards them while their friends pelt you with arrows. No enemy will follow you into a kill hole. If you're fighting in a corridor, enemies will actively seek the other end so that they can flank you. Unlike most other roguelikes, there are actually penalties to getting flanked and surrounded, and enemies exploit this as much as possible.

Yes, tending towards the middle. The game rolls two four-sided dice and sums them.
>>149813484
>2d4 is not hd it's damage dice you retard
it rolls for 1-4 damage twice
>>149813484
XdY
X = number of dice that are rolled
Y = how many sides the dice have
2d4 means roll dice that each have four sides.
The lowest you could roll is two 1's, for a total of 2.
The highest you could roll is two 4's, for a total of 8.
HD(hit dice) is just the monster's level, more or less.
I'm gonna read Immolation and Slouch a bunch. Good idea or best idea?
>>149814258
>>149814389

>>149814389
So then does HD relate to the monster damage or am I completely miss understanding it?
>>149814498
the only better idea is immo+disaster area
>>149814906
no, HD is just the monster's level and it's called "hit dice" because roguelike devs mindless copy random D&D mechanics without actually thinking about them
I think I just ran into a bug, I Stepped From Time but something still drained my int a whole bunch during. That's not supposed to happen.
>>149814906
Yes. You are. HD stands for hit dice, it is a dungeons and dragons thing where monsters have their HD in a certain typo of dice in hitpoints. (So a 8 HD monster can have 8d6, aka a dice with six sides rolled 8 times added together in hit points. (the range is 8-48 hp)).
The damage from the monster is not related to the HD of the monster (in some games it can be). The damage is just that, the 2d4. Aka two dice with four sides.
Pretty common RPG convention. And with Crpgs you can even have dice that are hard to create in real life. Like a d13. (A dice with 13 sides).

monsters have melee damage defined separately
HD does affect damage from branded attacks and spells including technically the dart slug's dart
except the dart slug is the only one with that spell and for a creature with a dart slug's HD it does 2d4 damage
>>149815379
>>149816317
whoops responded to wrong guy
HD totally does affect damage from some things though. An Orb of Fire's firebolt hits almost 3x as hard as one from Erolcha, and it's because of the higher HD.

We often put our false mortality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-madonnas, but you seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. so I ask you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything but the kids Nysnc, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back to into reality, because it's now like the pot calling the kettle cracked. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go.
Irregardless, make my words, when you get down you brass stacks it doesn't take a rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts, instead of baking a half bread effort. You might have to come to this conclusion though denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it's a peach of cake. The question at hand is whether it's worth it to make crawl's massive spaghetti code even worse by being willing to add special cases to completely unrelated item effects for a spell that exists on one monster
I think the answer is a pretty clear no, but there's probably some dumb reason behind it like "someone complained on the tavern b-but what about spirit shield, and nobody in -dev cared enough to veto to my being swayed to their shit reasoning"

>>149850935
While it depends where lair spawns, I don't really agree about dungeon being safer than lair.
The vast majority of stuff in lair is straightforward melee dudes, and nasty stuff is generally just stronger melee dudes. This makes it relatively easy to escape dangerous creatures, and reduces the chance of adds complicating an encounter (e.g. by paralzying/confusing/smiting you).
>>149842239
I've gotten like 3 DE to 15 runes, I just always splat them in zigs because I'm dumb like that. Their tiny HP, most likely shit tier - OK defenses, and most likely greedy skilling make them prime targets for getting RUK'D, wrecked by ugly things and so on if you aren't really careful with your MP. You don't always get the right spells for running away. In postend, if you don't have necromut, torment will make for some extra sad times with your whooping 190 HP. All I mean is that you have to be careful, and stay safe by getting your defenses to a reasonable point. More often than not, you'll need them.

>>149853102
OK, my fucking point is this:
If you run out of MP, you must rely on your defenses to get you out of a situation. Thus, you invest your str/dex IN ADDITION to your int. You do not always have rMissile/dMissile. You do not always have 90 MP. Sometimes that ruk WILL hit you even though you have reflect, and it WILL eat more than half your HP. You have to be prepared, and its MUCH better to have the extra 5+ EV from investment (and the leather/ring over robes) than to be in a situation where you have to stair down a yak pack, spriggan AE or ruk chukker when you have a 10/18/4 instead of a 15/30/4 split. You don't have a good reason to not get that. Its an easy and worthwhile investment, and there is more than enough experience to get that first, and then a level 9. Same reason you tend to pickup melee too. You don't ALWAYS do all this stuff, but its risk management.
>>149852829
Do they buff zig ?
It's not even megazig, on regular ziggurat, I see 3 fucking panlords at Zig:15
>>149853427

>>149850301
is the branch lair? you should generally enter that one as soon as possible, as its first few levels are actually easier than the dungeon levels it connects to

>>149853427
>If you run out of MP
Why would you let be in anyone's LOS while having 0 mp? And why can't you kill everyone waaaaaaaaay before you reach 0 mp? Even if you assume you have 0 !magic and no channeling available, why and how would you even do that?
>>149853623
Zigs really amp up after like zig:10 or so. The early floors aren't as free as they used to be either, with all the new monsters. I like to invest 1 point into strength (since that is always 1 point of EV in leather/ring) and get to 20~ dex. You can skimp if you find a ring or whatever that boosts you, but you definitely want it. 22~/30 split is easily attainable with moderate investment.
>>149853827
Nigga, you don't always have channeling. Your firepower isn't infinite. Sometimes you bite off more than you can chew, ESPECIALLY in the midgame when you're still bolting stuff or whatever. Things are not always ideal. Bad stuff will happen to your @. You will stumble and make an error. You need to set aside experience in the form of dodging, fighting, armour and so on as a way to mitigate this. Why is this even arguable? Literally every character does this. Its the safe option. THE SAFE OPTION IN A GAME WERE DEATH MEANS YOU START OVER. ITS THE SAFETY BELT TO YOUR DIESEL ENGINE. WHY DON'T YOU WANT IT?
>"cockatrice" is a race option in slex
>>149854156
No one here told anyone not to train Dodging and Fighting, you were trying to convince us how wasting points Str and Dex for DE is preferable against only Int.
How many stat points are you willing to waste anyway? That +12 EV in your "10/18/4 instead of a 15/30/4" example seems to me that you're planning to put every single statgain in Str and Dex instead of few
>>149854424
i can see how this might cause food issues now that i think about it
>2 death yaks
>1 frost giant
>no rC+
>no teleport scroll
Good thing they're still sleeping thanks to 5 stealth.
I guess this is time to really get the fuck out from this place, I don't want to push my luck.
>>149854483
Atleast 5. You get 15 base DEX, and a whopping 5 strength vs. your 19base int. Each point invested drastically increases your maximum potential EV (and thus, lowers the exp requirement for good EV). You're probably going with a caster god like Veh, Sif or Ashen, each of which will easily push your casting over the top. Why would you want HUGE int with diminishing returns over putting points where they'll do the most good? Why put all your eggs in one basket in a game where that doesn't work out all the time? You don't have to put them all into dex, just enough to hit 20 or so. EV is that imporant. You'll always hit 26+ INT naturally by 27 just with your base int plus the DE "+1 int every 4 levels" racial bonus. Do you really need more than that over 20~ dex?
>>149855029
I tested this just because I was curious about the actual numbers. You get 9 points to invest, and this is with 1 str/7dex/1int. Not bad. Lemme fiddle with the numbers to see how this affects max EV.
>>149855029
>Atleast
So you're having problems with killing enemies and most probably with spellhunger too because your Int is bad in exchange for getting """good""" defenses which you could easily or could obtain even more with a good randart AND the fact that DE's defenses are mostly made for ranged attacks that checks AC+EV which could be safely deflected by a spell. You mentioned that Repel/Deflect Missiles doesn't always work but would you actually let an enemy/ton of ranged threats to live before that happens? It won't matter even if you have 30 EV because if you can't manage to wipe everyone around you in a few turns before you run out of mana (excluding those lured by spell noise), your firepower is weak and you will always have trouble that is supposed to be trivial.
40 Int barely puts you at 8 pips of spellpower and you'd have to waste a wielding hand for a staff of [chosen element] just to get it to 9. Even if Int-ing has diminishing returns, it's still advisable to maximize it.

>>149855685
6str/22 dex gets you 36 EV in robes, 34 in leather and 27 in ring with 0 armour/27 dodging. 4 armour gets you to 28 EV with ring, and after that more armour doesn't help at all.
With 5str/15 dex, your EV drops a ton. 34 in robes, 29 in leather and 21 in ring. 4 armour gets you 30 EV in leather. 8 gets you 22 in ring.
At 15 dodging with the invested dex/str, you have 27 in robes, 25 in leather, and 19 in ring.
At 15 dodging with all int, you have 22 EV in robes/21 in leather and 15 in ring. You have the same EV with invested at 10-11~ dodging.
Not as drastic as I'd thought, but still significant. I think the strength is more limiting than the dex. I'll play with the numbers some more to see.
>>149856051
You can get 33 base int, but you definitely don't need MAX spell power to achieve victory. Middling spellpower is will kill the panlords, and atleast allow you to ninja the hell runes at worst. This I know for sure. I've done it plenty.

>>149856928
No shame in being a ninja. Saves you resources and effort. Stands to reason that you don't want to be in hell for long because of hell effects, and the hell lords are way tankier than the pan lords. My last ziggurat dude ninja'd every hell rune and still cleared a whole zig right after. Diesel is as diesel does, I guess.
There appears to be a sweet spot with more str/less dex that affords you more 1 more EV (and most likely cast %) if you plan to wear ring, but only IF you wear ringmail. Kind of neat, since that probably makes melee way better too! I'd have to fuck around with the numbers with various skill levels to see whats most ideal, but I'm tired and not curious enough to really see. I guess at the end of the day, you'll have solid defenses with the invested dex with ring vs. squishy with int and leather. I'd rather have the solid. You'd rather the squishy. To each their own. It wasn't as drastic as I thought, but it is far from negligible since each point invested is 1 more EV/AC.
I finally won with a mage character! Managing inventory and spending time casting spells is so tedious compared to melee but new Sif is pretty ridiculous. I only had one pip of rf+ and had to switch rings to get cold/poison resist and see invis, maybe that was dumb but it seemed like I didn't really have any super close calls. Maybe because of purple drac MR?
>>149857516
Oh, and it makes good EV much cheaper to attain which means you can put that exp towards spellcasting or whatever. Not sure it works the other way around with how much int will save you on casting spells. Testing that seems way more tedious though.

One large issue I have with crawl is that there IS no escape. Everything is as fast or faster than you except a few weak as shit encounters you'll never run from anyway. Unless you're centaur/spriggan/vampire in bat form. It's even worse if you worship chei. Blink scroll acquisition is way too rng dependent, tp scroll are usually too risky (takes a few turns to work, teleports you at random, including in the middle of the group you're running from), etc.
>>149874261
But don't you know having no escape is Interesting and Tactical much like Elegantly designed games such as Sil(tm).

>The power of your forms that you use to melee will get weak if you distribute to str and dex.
This post is 100% wrong, the damage of most forms *only* depends on str/dex.
Int and spellpower affect form duration, *not* damage.

There are more, and if you have none of these and yet take stupid risks then you're simply bad at the game. It's that simple. Running away from things that are as fast or slower than the player is as simple as pressing a movement key in the opposite direction.
>speed 10 monsters can close distance because of biased energy randomization
Energy randomization isn't biased to allow them to close, you're just bad.
>every method to gain movement speed has been nerfed to dogshit
Haste, blink, fear, teleport, curare, nets, swiftness, sputterflies, ?summoning, phial of floods, fan of gales, box of beasts, sack of spiders, cblink, invisibility, stealth with LOS breaking, funneling monsters through a 1-tile corridor towards an upstair, using might/agi/dig/disint/lignification and fighting in a killhole, kiting so enemy pathing is forced to walk through shallow water and lose speed, kiting multiple monsters around corners so enemy pathing is forced to lose speed when it forcemoves the tough enemy through the weak enemy, webs, hatches, jumping down a pit in a pinch, and there's always the MuMo favorite of just walking away until they lose distance through a combination of energy randomization and taking a swing.
