Is there any merit in playing the original games?
I tried playing the first game when it came out in PS3 years ago and it put me off for so long that only recently I played (and enjoyed) the remake.

But in Rebirth 1 tons of maker characters mention knowing Neptune from another dimension, I know this is a reference to Victory, am I missing anything by not playing it or can I simply play Rebirth 2 and 3?

The first game is the only one where the remake is completely different. You can look that one up on youtube if you have to know the story. Rebirth 2 is similar to Mk2, and Rebirth 3 is similar to V, to the point where you don't need to play the originals.

I recommend watching the events of the first game on youtube. It's pretty good, especially Red's events.
You can try the same for Mk2 as well, but that one didn't change nearly as much. Mostly just the 3d models in conversations and it has Gust/Nisa instead of Brocolli/Red.
There is zero reason to look at V, RB3 is just a straight up better version with nothing missing.

I said watch it because gameplay wise it's really hard to go back, the newer ones are so much better. Playing HDN feels like a chore just to see the character interactions.

Basically, the non-Goddesses characters that pop up to help you are cameos from the previous game in the series V, which was latter remade into RB3.

You don't really need to know about them because they don't actually do much in RB1.

The only difference between RB3 and Victory is how they handle the Makers. RB3 acknowledge those that appear in RB2 and they act according while Victory has them interacting for the first time.

The Affimojas fight was a bit wacky tho, idk how i managed to break the cape in the first phase without
realizing what was damaging it, it had me ending up googling after 10 minutes of the mighty next forms not damaging him kek. I remember scanning him to see if he had any vulnerabilities, but it said nowhere he was immune to physical damage with the cape.

As a matter of fact, I just played against Affimojas.
If it wasn't for Vert's Sylphe Spear who deals wind damage, it would have been a pain in the ass.

That being said, even through none of the CPU has any heal, they still have a lot of AoE buffs. Between Noire who boosts the speed, Neptune who boosts everyone's physical damage, Vert who boosts everyone's elemental damage on top of slowing the enemy down and Blanc who boost everyone's defenses, they can deal a lot of damage and not take much in the face.

It's not about being blind/deaf, Affimojas says he's invincible with the cape,
so you naturally go for the cape first, if you use the scan item you can see affimojas stats, but only the health bars of the breakable parts, hence you have no way to know the cape is immune to physical damage without some trial and error, and the game happens to set you to play with 4 characters that deal physical damage, asides vert that may deal some elemental damage at the time if you choose to click Sylphet Spear.

Thing is if you do end up taking damage you are shit out of luck, and Neptunia buffs arent powerful enough to compensate for that. Using a party of the four goddesses is essentially crossing your fingers and hoping that you can kill the enemy before they kill you, which works against trash mobs and the like, but falls completely flat against anything remotely challenging.

If the fight is going to last more than a couple of turns, combos are much more efficient at dealing damage for the delay used. It also depends on the defense of the enemies you're fighting as skills/EXE drives don't scale anywhere near as hard as combo attacks. If your combo is doing over 3000 damage then you should probably stick to using that unless you need the range/AoE/debuff of the EXE.
