That's a question of interpretation.
You can have a wide range of skilled invaders and non-skilled invaders and their builds may or may not be effective. Generally speaking in Dark Souls 3 the invaders have a better chance of killing the host than in the previous games(twinking aside) since they are actually allowed to heal now with Estus. Earlier if invaders met ganks, they had to rely on ridiculous twinked gear or spamming instaheal items that weren't meant for mass consumption.

Invaders may not be on equal footing with the host, but they're more than capable of taking down hosts that are hiding with phantoms. Remember that the hosts aren't there to fight the phantoms, they're there to clear the level and get to the boss, and every time they clear and invader and chug more than 3 flasks, they lose more than they gain. So if an invader gets a host to chug 4 times, they've already set back the host.

Dark Souls 3 makes it so that essentially every place is the Forest Gank and there can be multiple invaders and gigantic free-for-alls with phantoms of multiple colors. The game isn't "balanced", but it's imo inherently more "fun".

It really annoys me there's a lack of a comprehensive data base regarding the Old Hunters DLC.

I rang my Resonate Bell in the Research Hall but I haven't seen the "Searching for a chime-" message once. My bell symbol isn't exed out. What's the issue here? I can even see other player phantoms with the Resonant Bell rings coming off them walking by me.

The DLC bosses were fucking awesome though,

False due to it being harder to kill anyone 1v1 in general than in previous games, as DaS3 lacks DaS1's instant backstabs as well as the slower pace of DaS2 - rolls cost 16 stamina as opposed to 30 in the other games, and give you a shitload of iframes to the point where you can get someone stuck in a corner and be unable to kill them until their stamina runs out just because they spam rolls in place.
The thing is that with two phantoms and a host, spamming R1 creates a dense enough blender that you can't roll through it reliably, but the host can always reliably keep rolling away from the one invader. Hell, a smart host will literally never die to invasions, just roll to the boss fog. Not like you can stop them.

Killing a dark phantom refunds some flask uses in 3.

Yeah, I keep running into suicidal hosts too, fuckers just charge straight into groups of 3+ mobs. I don't even know anymore, is this how people usually play these games? I always attempt to separate groups, or if that's not possible do hit and run where I wait for opportunities to sneak in hits between their attacks then back off before getting gang raped. Seems like common sense.

Are these the same people who complain about always getting stunlocked to death? Would explain some things.

This is why Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 in their heyday will always be better than Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3.

People who played Dark Souls 2 or Dark Souls 3 first might disagree, but it's simply because they never played the first two games when they were released.

The launch of Demon's Souls and the launch of Dark Souls are a perfect storm that From Software will never be able to re-create unless they create an entire new IP w/ new game-play mechanics, very different from Souls.

The whole appeal of the first two Souls games was nobody knew shit about anything, and the joy of discovering and exploring shit on your own and telling your friends about it, not the whole internet.

It was also during a time where wiki's weren't widespread in 2009, and social media hadn't taken over to the point where finding the answer to anything was just a few clicks away.

"Souls Veterans" and the "Pillars of the community" are the cancer that ruined the Souls series. The wikis, fextralife, etc ruined it too.

From Software is better at creating new and unique experiences rather than creating the same rehashed shit over and over.

World tendency isn't a bullshit system. It's pretty interesting, the lore does have it's nuance too, after all I hear plenty of people who don't know one thing or another or have some misconception about it. It's just less apparent since it isn't fed through item descriptions.

It's interesting system that falls apart because it's manipulation requires you to play offline or not teleport back to the Nexus much at all and specifically avoid killing bosses while wanting to turn the world into Black Tendency.

Similarly, a lot of the Tendency mechanics are stupid, when they add a plank somewhere or randomly open a gate or clear a pile of rubble. It doesn't make common sense.

Essentially the World Tendency makes PBWT a cool optional hardmode, but it requires manipulation to get it to happen.

I play online and use tendency all the time. It's actually easier in a lot of cases, since the average shifts towards white. It adds a level of replayability to the game, and can make first playthroughs more interesting if people encounter different things to different people, for example I found Selen on my first playthrough, not realising that she's connected to tendency.
I don't think we should apply common sense too much to this. It's literally about how demonic or light a world is, it doesn't make much sense. Magic isn't really constrained by logical rules, and it shouldn't be, otherwise it's not magic.

Honestly his DaS1 playthrough wasnt that bad. I really genuinely felt like he enjoyed the game, especially seeing as DaS2 was so bad he didn't even feel the desire to make videos for it.

Most streamers barely even try to see the depth in these games and simply play them for the ebin SO HARD LOL XDDDD memes and never even try to look deeper. I kinda felt like he saw what the game was going for, which was kinda cool.

Did they? I haven't played the game in a couple of months, but I remember stuff like the estoc nerf, the glaive R1-L2-R2 spin combo and the scaling of the DMB/LB damage on twin weapons (notably DMB sellsword twinblades) was a thing. Caestus even got it's recover frames drastically increased even though people still abuse it for the nearly non-existent startup.

Still, it isn't even the gankspank weapons that are the problem as much as the huge amount of advantages hosts are given compared to invaders. Making it so one-shot kill builds are basically the only ones that work is really one dimensional and lame. You just have people parry fishing all day with their twink builds or occasionally DMB sellswording even despite the nerf.

I'm torn whether I'd like to get a good, solid castle level in the DLC or some fucked up Cthulhu-inspired Deep hellscape shit.

I'm kinda leaning towards the latter even though I really love castles in Souls games.

The sludge guys in the Cathedral were pretty cool, and I'd like to see more something like them and the spider-ladies in the DLC, but not so weak.

Anyway, I liked Earthen Peak. It's a solid, vertical level, interesting encounters and there are a lot of traps and the area has a strong central gimmick. Like, you can see the moving parts that move the windmill and if you burn the windmill, it drains the poison.

And in The Gutter, it was okay but they could've made it a little more interesting looking by adding little hovels and houses in the area and put those gremlins from the Shaded Woods there too.

This is one of the most artificially difficult parts of DS2. Death here doesn't feel deserved, it feels like a faggot had too much fun with the copy paste tool and is just begging you to practice boss door runs - which like you said can be done in 20 seconds if you get good at it.

Honestly, I thought Harvest Valley + Earthen Peak was okay. The gank pit with all those sickle-wielders was kinda stupid, I hated the poison fog shrouded tunnels until I realized I could just light a torch to see perfectly fine, and the torch to the windmill mechanic was out of left field were it not for all the messages telling me about it, but otherwise it was fairly tolerable. But then again, I did a Hex build so I had Caressing Prayer to just cure poison whenever I needed to.

The main place I don't like of all the areas I've been to so far is Shaded Woods, and that's mainly because they expect you to navigate through those fogged woods while near-invisible forest rangers that you can't even lock onto gank you. I would have hoped that lighting a torch would let you see farther (at the very least it would help with knowing where the enemies are coming from), but no dice there.

Those last two points are pretty salient. Blighttown is essentially a shanty town that was built at the base of the high ramparts of Undead Burg and at the end of the sewer system, which you can see because one of the buttresses of the above structures is part of the level. The poison lake naturally follows from the accumulation of raw sewage and the town residents are clearly vagrants from above.

What are some lesser used but still good shields? I use kite until Lothric K shield, shield of want, or sunset shield if I cant hit the strength. I'm kind of tired of seeing these shields.

Its extra frustrating because greatshields tend to weigh a billion pounds and anything smaller than them lacks 100% block.

Reminder that DaS1 is the only game in the series with interconnected wraparound levels so this has never been a series standard and expecting it in other games is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Well, less interconnection also means less confined space, which means more opportunity for larger environmental variety. One third of DaS1 features borderline identical architecture between the upper burg, parish, lower burg, depths and arguably sen's fortress. The game basically has 3 split sections :
1. Firelink which connects to the tutorial, is a lategame bonus area and the last area.

2. Lothrich High Wall+Castle+CKG+GA

3. Settlement+Road+Cathedral+Farron+Catacombs+Meme Ruins+Irithyll+Propane Capital.

The problem is the way it's structured. The High Wall is a place you really won't properly go back to after you beat it once and then you go do the next 60% of the game and Lothric Castle feels shorter when you didn't do it right after High Wall.

Honestly the game should dump you into Road of Sacrifices right after High Wall and have the possible routes be :
1. Undead Settlement -> Cathedral -> Catacombs/Deep DLC->Propane Capital from below.
2. Farron(Lord Soul) -> Catacombs->Irithyll the normal route. ->Anor Londo(Lord Soul)
3. Allow players to go to Grand Archives in advance.
