I want to jump into developing for 3D, but I'm not sure where to start.
I can do 3D models and textures, have some background in coding and soundwork, and have a whole lot of spare time on my hands. Problem is which engine to choose

for spells like this, for example Karma from league of legends, where a line is drawn from one unit to another and stuff happens to units passing through:
should the effect occur only once per line per unit, or should a unit be able to run back and forth through the line, resetting the magnitude and duration of the effect each time, or something else all together?
