Between the early Ganon and the old man in the cave, this looks like at least a redux of the original LoZ formula. I feel like BotW will probably have some more plot story, but LoZ started with not much at all but just a mandate to go stop this Ganon guy.

If the Oracle games are any indicator "Calamity Ganon" is a possible reference to a Ganon that has been resurrected from death at least partially. Maybe that means a secondary villain in there too. Twinrova would be the traditional source of a resurrection for Ganon. Ghirahim filled this role for Demise in SS. I don't want to say that the stories are recycled, but they do tend to use the same mechanics instead of inventing new rules.

I like the manga. They're hardly accurate to the games but it's nice to read a more personalized Link, and the differences other characters have is enjoyable too.

I know in the last thread I had crossed out Mad Scrubs, but as it turns out, they are in fact among these. I played OoT again to confirm. Zeldawiki confused me in how it distinguishes Mad Scrubs and Deku Scrubs. That's the only hint you're going to get in this thread.

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess were a little annoying in presenting a great villain and removing them and having the bigger villain show up right at the end to be the final boss fight without any other sort of establishment.

I don't know why, but I suspect game's plot is going to be some mega meta-commentary on the series and its cycles at large.

The game also has this sort of melancholy, helpless Soulsborne vibe going for it. Post-apocalyptic world where nature has overtaken everything - both magnificent technology and Hyrule's society at large. Remnants and ruined throwbacks to previous Zelda games everywhere. Ganon becoming so powerful to the point where he's no longer an individual, but an omnipotent yet mindless force of pure destruction. The Sheikah monks sitting in stasis for who knows how long, only to killed off and forgotten once Link collects a spirit orb from them. The Master Sword in ruin, rusted and broken. Link being resurrected to take out Ganon, like some manufactured drone. Hell, Link doesn't even wear his traditional green tunic anymore.

It feels like this could be the final game in the cycle. Or that the cycle has happened so many times that saving Hyrule and the world at large has become pointless and nihilistic. Almost like it's the end times, or it all needs to end. It's much more apparent and self-aware than WW's post-apocalyptic backstory and tone.

Maybe you can say I'm overthinking it, but those are my impression. Shit's fucking bleak and Nintendo's making this blatantly apparent through all of the little hints and nods they're dropping into the game's world.

I disagree totally. The land has a very innocent tone in my opinion because the land has been brought back to its origins as a result of Ganon's victory or war or whatever happened. There's a more grim undertone because you realize that this return to form has been caused by destruction which you get to see in the ruins and the guardians and the solace of the land. Even then, though, this realization is alleviated by nature's overbearing presence and the fact that there are still people living well. Bleak is the wrong word I think poignant would be a better choice since you still have to face the fact that Hyrule was just about totally destroyed.

Someone refresh my memory, the orange sheikah door in Skyward Sword in...I believe the Faron Woods, what was it's purpose? Wasn't it to guard Zelda?

Eh, I don't know. I really don't hope they pull another WW with the theme and tone of the overall plot. We've already had the whole "innocent and ignorant society goes on without a care in the world as a dead society sits under their feet" thing going on in WW. If they're doing it again, they better pull a different take on it.

Though I can see that they're already pulling a Ghibli spin on the nature vs tech theme, with nature representing good as a whole, particularly themes of freedom and innocence, while technology is portrayed as a destructive and repressive force (especially from the perspective of Link.)

You also have to consider this thread was made during Euro Hours and at night likely when people were going to bed for work or class or whatever.

Dark Souls/Zelda meme aside, I personally always say (and it's not exclusive to just the Souls Series by any means) that it took a sense of exploration from LoZ. It's a very cryptic series without a lot of clues, very akin to LoZ or even AoL. You aren't really told where to go half the time or even what you're doing and why you're doing it, it's just "Ring the Bells" or "Go to Brygenwerth". Which is very similar to "You spawn in a forest, here is a cryptic old man giving you a sword, now go." and it's even very similar to the new design with BotW in that you're just dumped there and told to go to a place, and don't really have much context for anything, though in BotW I expect this to change and you to have some direction in regards to where to go for story related things, but ultimately you're just cast into a world with no knowledge of anything.

Other areas where the Souls series takes from Zelda, there is a lot of methodical waiting as far as enemies and bosses are concerned, and this is more of a thing with OoT and future 3D titles within the Zelda series, but a lot of enemies are waiting for that perfect moment to attack or guard, Stalfos in OoT are a good indication of this due to the way they guard against attacks. Which Souls takes from, a lot of it just waiting for that perfect moment to seize an opportunity to attack, and while in both games you can go apeshit on enemies and bosses and immediately take them down, it's not always wise and can cause problems, far more so in the Souls series. A good indication are Iron Knuckles from OoT and say the Charred Black Knights from Dark Souls. They're both hefty and can easily be dealt with by circle strafing to one side and doing quick stabs or jumping attacks for instance of back-flipping/back-dashing and doing it, but one wrong move by rushing and you'll end up dead or very hurt and have to back off.

The real problem here is that only very few of us played all the Zelda games. A good chunck of posters barely know what those topics are about or they played that specific Zelda game so long ago they forgot about some details.

That is true, but it would be nice to see a little bit more discussion on some of the gameplay or design elements and the lore itself other than just the timeline or what the historia says about it and the Hero of Time. While I enjoy discussing those things, they do get old after awhile.

Like I saw a discussion, a couple threads ago I wanna say about Termina and the possibility of it being the Hero of Time's psyche and that was a fine thread that discussed some possibilities and theories. But any time you bring up any amount of theories you're met with fanfic or headcanon, even if that person says it was just a theory and not to take it as fact.

I know that's a fault of a couple posters themselves and not the threads by any means, but it seems like some people let that deter them from continuing to discuss things instead of ignoring those people and it dies down unfortunately.

These threads aren't dead by any means, but it would be nice to have a little more varied discussion at times, that's all I'm really getting at.

Who is he? A totally new hero? A hero we already met?

Recently, there is a very interesting theory about BotW happening in a new timeline, where Ganondorf managed to get his wish granted by the Triforce in WW.
In that case, BotW Link is WW Link. The cell shaded style might also be a hint, along with Koroks and salt rocks.

I'm still leaning on the crackpot theory of this new Link being some kind of sentient robot or pseudo-clone of another Link - maybe even a genetic Franken-combo of previous Links. It goes well with the technology vs. nature theme, with nature representing innocence, beauty, freedom and the value of life to Link and the player, while technology will represent knowledge, destruction, enslavement and the disregard of life. Not to mention that Ganon is now comparable to a large-scale Skynet computer virus to reflect that technology theme, it would make sense of Link and Zelda also follow suit in their own ways.

The whole intro with him waking up and out of that cryo pod with no memory of who or what he once was but an imperative to go off and slay Ganon because some voice ordered him to is suspicious as fuck. I think it's even more concerning that Zelda and the Old Man don't really bring it up either or try to explain what has happened to him if it really is a case of him getting amnesia. Or that he has to go around collecting these items called 'spirit orbs' in order to become a hero. Implying that this Link lost his hero's spirit 100 years ago or never even had one to begin with. Or it's always possible that they did explain some details to him, but it was removed from the demo. Who knows.

In regards to similarities with the other heroes - he sounds most like OoT/MM Link, but looks most like SS Link. It's possible that he could be a re-imagining of the old retro NES and SNES Link designs as well, thanks to his hair style. But I still firmly believe that this is a new Link overall, in his own way.

But really though, I don't think many people can argue that ALttP Link is by far the strongest. He defeats Ganon who has the full Triforce, whips Onyx and Veran's asses, Ganon's again, goes into a Wind Fish dream, whips Ganon's Nightmare version again, along with a variety of other bosses and things, and ends up like 120 years old and still kicking ass.

TP Link is definitely the strongest physically though. Like I said, he can toss several tons like it's relatively nothing.

It is actually Link who messed up. Finishing Blow was supposed to kill Ganon, but he misses and stabs him in the jaw because Ganon lunged at him. So then the portal opened up to contain him forever as a contingency.

But Link knew what he headed into, when he made the choice to save Zelda. And Zelda was the only remaining Sage, so of course she didn't have a choice but to be present, when it turned out Ganondorf was still alive. Either she sacrificed herself or all of Hyrule would be at his mercy again.

Assuming it doesn't create an alternate timeline, then yes, yes you would. You went back in time, not creating an alternate timeline and changed the past, that means you never played the game in the first place, therefore you would have no memory of it.

Now, if it did create an alternate timeline, then yes you would still be aware of it, but then logic would set in, that in some timeline you did play the game, you must be from that timeline, and this new one is a different one, and therefore the events of this timeline by you playing a different game, do not affect the one you came from, only the timeline you are currently in.

Correct, it's a paradox. You only time traveled back in time in order to play a different game. However because you play a different game, you lose the memory of the first game. This means that you should have had no logical reason in which to time travel back in the first place, but you still did. The memory is gone, as well as the original event trigger (playing Video Game A), but you still manage to play Video Game B, therefore creating a paradox.

It means either a timeline must split, or you can't change it in the first place. In both of these cases, you wouldn't lose your memory of the original event Trigger because it either will always exist (can't be changed) or exists within in alternate universe.
