don't you usually stick to the /v/ threads?

it looks great, but I still think you're copying paper mario a bit too blatantly - there's a lot of room to introduce your own style (a bit like you did with the vine action selector thing)

like, you copied the blue A button prompt when that doesn't even make sense on any non-nintendo controller (or even less on a keyboard)

the answer is to not be ashamed that your game is similar to another. if your idea that you like ends up being like another game, study it, learn from, and ultimately improve from it.

You'll need one for Steam, but you don't need to get an actual publisher. They'll take a large cut of your profit, on top of Steam or other store's 30% cut, and then taxes.

If you do a good job of marketing yourself you'll never need a publisher.

Whatever you do, stay the hell away from Black Shell Media, they're nothing more than a scam.

Striving for originality will fucking burn you out.
You are in competition with 5,000+ generations of Homo Sapiens each one more numerous than the other, roughly 100,000,000,000 souls and still most of the shit they've came up with were re-iterations of tales they've heard before.
Technological and societal progress helped to expand the creative horizons considerably, but post-industrial world has billions of people alive at any given moment.

Just don't fucking sweat it, do your research and if you go further than shallow shit like changing names and locations/time periods, you will be fine.
>>
>>149436374
I was under the impression that most publishers only deal with LLCs, and at the very least it would signify that we're serious and not a bunch of screw-arounds. I know the money's bad, I wouldn't be doing this if I was trying to get rich, I just need enough money to eat until the game gets done.
>>
>>149435245

>>
>>149436658
LLCs take no time to setup online dude, you need one not to look serious but to cover your ass in case someone sues you, hence the 'limited liability' part.

All you need to get a publisher is something interesting enough.

I feel like that advice isn't crazy applicable? Sounds more like they can't stick to an idea.

>>149435245
If you can't find a cool idea, stick to a concept for some other idea. Maybe choose a project that will help you learn a certain skill, or one you have people to work on with, or something you think will do good at making money. Kind of shallow, but you need a way to stick to something more than you need to be the "idea guy".
>>
How would you go to calculate or save the maximum score you can achieve in a level to calculate the player's rank in S, A, B etc.?
Some levels have multiple paths with different set of points and you can only take one of them. In my current concept I'm counting them myself and hardcoding them into the code.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that right now since we're trying to get the engine in place everything is pretty much PM.

It's also kind of hard to blur that line where you want it to be like PM because it's a spiritual sequel but you want it to have unique elements of its own.

Hopefully when we add more of the combat stuff like combination attacks and the UI is less placeholder it'll start gaining more of its own identity

So, I had this idea for a while now, (i think game maker would be enough for that), simulating a little "one-storey america" town with people going on their daily routines, and you as a killer, living in same town, having to kill one or several of them in a specific fashion, like strangling, poisoning or at specific place, or leaving a specific evidence at the spot, or all together, without alerting neighbours or the police. As a nice second side of the coin would be uploading a finished town to the game server so other players would try to solve the crime and point out the killer by investigating the crime scene, interrogating population and such.
I am actually capable of implementing all that besides networking part, at least without further reading specifically about that.
So, good idea or shit idea?

Unity splash screen is a symbol of being a shitty indie.

"I think some players have a false perception of Unity and that might be of our own making,” he says. “We require free users to employ a Unity splash screen [in their games] but professional users are not required to show off the fact their game was made using our engine. Maybe in terms of how the engine is perceived we ought to do that the other way around."

sounds like an unironic idea i posted before

A game where you open loot crates. You get a couple free loot crates every day when you log in. Each loot crate has a rarity between common and legendary, and a special godly rarity. The usual crates contain procedurally generated loot, and the godly crates have an increased chance to generate a brand new loot which makes your copy a special unique foil loot.

There is a limit on how many free crates you get per day but the first few days you get to open a couple more. You can buy loot crate crates for cash, which contain 3 loot crates of a random rarity and one guaranteed uncommon or higher.

Loot parts, loot crate parts and loot crate crate parts can be crafted by breaking down 5 respective items of the same rarity, letting you craft a higher tier item. Godly/Unique crates and loot can't be broken down. Players can trade these parts as well as loot, loot crates, loot crate crates, and there are leaderboards for those who collect many loots, many unopened crates, those who open many crates per day, those who have many duplicate loots, etc.

> he hasn't read the pac-man dossier cover to cover multiple times

Here's a tl;dr:
> all ghosts: toggle between regular behavior and scatter behaviour at regular intervals, scatter behaviour occurs roughly 10% of the time and in this state, they move towards a corner of the map (mostly to give the player some breathing room)

Red ghost
> Chaser AI
> if pacman's x position is greater than the ghost's, he moves right at every possible opportunity, if his x position is less than the ghost's, the ghost moves left at every opportunity.
> same applies to the y axis
> gets faster and faster as pacman consumes more dots

Pink ghost
> Ambusher AI
> targets the tile 4 tiles ahead of where pacman is (if pacman is facing left, the target tile is 4 tiles left of pacman)
> aside from where he's heading, same concept of as the red ghost, moves left if the x position of the target tile is less than his current x position, etc.

Blue ghost
> Fickle AI
> targets a tile that's the mirror of the red ghost's position, relative to pacman
> if the red ghost is 2 tiles to the left of pacman, he aims to be 2 tiles to the right of pacman
> this usually causes him to seemingly cut off the yellow dude since you're usually fleeing the red ghost

Orange ghost
> Goofy AI
> when more than 8 tiles away from pacman, his AI is exactly the same as red's (chase pacman)
> when he is within 8 tiles of pacman, he aims for the centre of the maze

I hooked up the sun to the new time of day system. It's tracked in x minute multiples (5, currently), and I realized that made the sun a bit jumpy, so I had to take the elapsed time from the timer to calculate the interpolation. Not sure what the final timescale will be but I think 1 hour = 1 day is relatively typical for these types of games.

I am almost done with features though. I mostly just need to finish up alchemy, and add multiple pages or a scrollbar to the quest log. Then it's all level design after that (except for dungeon-specific features like opening doors, pulling levers, etc that I can't do yet).

Here's the most honest answer I can give you after 10 years of being a perma-learner, my warning up-front is that I haven't finished anything significant aside from assignments and boring shit. Globals are "frowned upon" but you need state. Globals are a quick and dirty way to approach state. It's preferable to wrap that in a structure and pass it around explicitly, but it does serve roughly the same purpose and so globals may be acceptable in a prototyping phase. You definitely want to shift them into a state structure early on so that a save/load system can be sane. Using globals long-term in a big project seems to be setting yourself up for a lot of pain, as the amount of state will grow and the more you avoid encapsulating state the more pain there will be to keep up with it.
>>
>Not creating a service in your player's windows to keep track of global data

And you call yourself amateur?
>>
>>149450301
Well your options are ultimately
>static memory
>monobehaviour which survives scene loads
>file IO

What you choose should depend on when the data is needed.

If you only need it for a single scene transition then do the coroutine thing I told you above. If you need to read it after shutdown then store it to a file (ideally not the registry though). >Am I being a bitch about it?
Yes.

Just get an HDD and tell Windows to mirror your SSD to it every X days. That will essentially remove any issue concerning lost data. Being a pussy doesn't save your data, saving your data does.

Also, SSD life is fucklong at this point. Bought a Sandisk SSD for 60 bucks, 120GB, in December.
Pic related. It's been in use for eight months with my PC constantly on, multiple rewrites of the OS and all of my dev stuff on the HDD.
A the current pace, the SSD will hold for a decade.
And remember that larger SSDs can have proportionally more R/W cycles, so their lifetimes will only increase.

Yes, SSDs lose lifetime with R/W actions, but they last for so long that it doesn't matter for an ordinary human being.

Don't use them for server shit, though, unless you are a company and can replace the drives every X months.

i was looking at that arm for 2 days

i've rewritten the constraint algorithm in at least 5 different ways

i figured that maybe the issue was just that there weren't enough links in my chain

im so frustrated by this i have no idea what's wrong

the constraint """algorithm""" is LITERALLY just checking if an angle is outside of two other angles and then clamping it to the nearest one if it is

that's it

either i've royally fucked up that simple task 5+ times on multiple IK systems, or all of my IK algorithms - which otherwise works flawlessly - have been improperly coded in such a way that it only matters when i try to apply constraints

it's obviously the former and i'm a gigantic fucking retard but holy shit it's really disheartening to fail at that sort of task that many times

I might end up with an actual loading screen since my overworld map will probably by somewhere in ~200+MB range

I'm not really sure if average computers can display that thing without a 10 second freeze

>>149451141
The only advice I can give is to draw as much intermediate shit as possible and figure out what it should look like, so that you can find the first discrepancy that appears. It's incredibly important that you figure out exactly WHAT is wrong, the more complicated the algorithm the harder it is to simply search for something "wrong" and the more you NEED this kind of debugging. In the worst case, use debug prints and figure out what you expect the values to be. Move down line by line until you find something suspicious, and even then it may take you a while to understand what is going wrong. It's just how coding is, you have to go through a lot of pain to grow and to develop habits that hopefully reduce the occurrence of this kind of issue in the future.

>So I started a job two weeks ago as a game developer for an educational game. I can't say much about it, but I do have stories to share.

>Quick set up, this game has been in active development for roughly two years. The plan is to ship an early build in September to evaluate it's ability in the class room, so I've come onto this project pretty late. The team was mostly programmers, and I was brought on mostly for 3D modeling, though I find myself helping out everywhere.

>So what did they do before they brought in some 3D people? They found models off of the internet. Uh oh...

>Now I've done rips from games to get models into gmod, so I'm used to working with messy models. I was not ready for what I saw when I booted up the project for the first time.

>The framerate in scenes couldn't break 20fps, and wondering why, I decided to investigate and the first placed I looked was our odd collection of 3D models.

>All of them... 300k+ faces, 1000+ materials (all of them diffuse colors, no actual diffuse texture applied), and are all a mess of unusable triangles. All of them also have horrid scaling issues that when imported into the engine appear fine, but god forbid if you want to animate it. The whole thing explodes into a giant mess of colors and faces that stretches for miles and miles.

>I noticed that some of the models were oddly warped and their objects had a weird naming scheme (Drawcall_001, Drawcall_002, ect). And then it hit me. This asset was ripped from some other game. Possibly from one of the model dumps in the modeling section on these forums. They were planning on shipping this thing with assets from the internet without researching where they came from...

guys, icecold dev here. I'm afraid I designed myself into a corner so I come looking for your input.

For those who didn't play the prototype ( https://deity-link.itch.io/icecold-prototype )
The original game mode is a time attack where you start level 1 and level up by breaking ice blocks, which unlocks powers that let you break blocks faster and kill the enemies. The player has 2 minutes and 10 hp, whichever comes to zero first ends the game.

A bretty good artist recently took interest in the prototype and would like to do the art for a full game, and I'm currently trying to game design my way into a story mode with multiple stages, however, how the fuck does the concept work in a mult-stage game? Will the player start level 1 again in every level?

Now that I wrote all of that down I'm starting to see how I could proceed, but I'll keep an eye out for any input you guys provide.

Overly commercialized post-apocalyptic world where projectiles look like bottles because the Cola Company took over the military.

You experience a world with a dead society and use tech that stopped making sense because no one had any connection to reality anymore.

It's a survival game, but all of your tools are not quite suitable for their usage description.
Your beds are made from a jelly that needs to b replenished.
Your ammo is shaped like bottles, which have to be filled with gun liquid at home base.
Your house is made from aluminium and constantly decays due to rust.
You are unhealthy as fuck but move like an Arena FPS character because all of your movement needs are taken care of by an exoskeleton that was grafted to your genome as a type of nanomachine, so that you and all of your children will naturally have an exoskeleton to make life more comfy.

It's a kind of Metroidvania with pretty open worlds, where you try to progress and gain new abilities until you reach the last human settlement so that you can finally be Pepe again instead of someone who actually fights for survival. Because, in the end, home is best. And for you, this means an overly commercialized dystopia.
There is a survival and crafting aspect, but all tools are temporary and the best way to replenish them is on your search for more stuff.

By making good fucking products.
I'm a tradesman.
I buy Stanley tools and Festool/Makita power tools.
Not because I've seen them on TV commercial, or a Subway poster, but because they were recommended to me.
I've almost avoided Festool (back then Protool) because their prices were fucking ridiculous (~150 Euro for a motherfucking battery is a sum that can actually buy entire cordless drill set from other brands) but after I've tried one out, I'm never letting go, unless they start making shitty products.
They are powerful as fuck, they endure insane things and they last. And I know this, because I've used them for years and they never failed me, not because I've read it or heard it somewhere.
And I will recommend them further down the road, not to people who intend to make a birdhouse for their kids or fix their garden bench and then put the thing on a shelf for the rest of the year of course, that's just a waste of fucking money, you can do that with much cheaper tools and you'll be fine.
But for someone in the field in need of heavy duty equipment, I will vouch for it.

In my opinion, learning a language that can be used for many different purposes seems like a better use of time than learning a language that only has one. That is probably the single biggest thing stopping me from trying GameMaker.

Learn C++
http://www.learncpp.com/
http://www.codeblocks.org/downloads/26

Then when you feel you're proficient enough. Add SFML
http://www.sfml-dev.org/download/sfml/2.3.2/

Make:
Pong->Breakout->a third tiny arcade clone of your choice

Then you can start on your tiny RPG to eventually build your CoL-like game.

Don't listen to him. Unless you want to get a job in the industry, or like tinkering and experimenting for self-learning purposes more than making actual games, his advice is not worth following.

The C++ part is ok. But same can be said about any language.

If you just wanna make a game, pick an engine and learn the language as you need. GM is fine, Unity is fine, UE4 is fine, libgdx is fine... Glance at tutorials and see what looks most intuitive to you

>>
>>149468876

That's not what I said. If you re-read, it was the SFML part the part I disagreed most with.

Pick an engine, not a library. If you just want to make games learn a language (C++ is fine, but it could be any language) as you go just because it'll be helpful.
>>
>>149469016
and by that I mean that you don't need to learn the language to get started. You can pick and engine and learn the language on a need-to-know basis. That way you can make games/progress and learn simultaneously instead of spending years learning a language just so you can pick up a library and finally get started re-inventing the wheel.
>>
>>149468989
You don't do things from scratch though. SFML does all the hard work anyway.

Game Maker will teach you the basics about programming and making a game. Otherwise, if you feel bold and determined enough to jump into Unity, or hell, use a framework instead of an engine, go right ahead, but be aware the learning curve will be a tad steeper.

It's very short so I recommend you play for yourself but here it goes.

You have to go to a mine to find a missing woman.
Inside the mine a guy gives you a knife to protect yourself.

You find an explorer with blood and a knife, you can ask him three things:
Why do you have blood on your overalls?
Why do you have a knife?
I heard moans, what happened?

After hearing his answers, you can decide to kill him or let him go.

After that, you find the missing woman, she wants to die and tells you to kill her, if you kill her you get bloody, if you don't she spits blood on you so the choice doesn't matter at all.
As you are leaving the mine, you find another explorer, and he asks the exact same questions as you did to the previous explorer.
You type out your own answers and the game ends there, you an enter your e-mail and later you get a message telling you what the other explorer decided to do with you.
Basically you have to convince the next player that you aren't the killer, but it's just stupid tbqh.

>Either are going to take massive amounts of it.

Agreed. It will take a long amount of time either way. It's just that I think for somebody who wants to make games for the art, music, etc, I think it's easier to stay motivated if they use an engine.

If you're coming from the more engineering-inclined side of things, you might be more motivated by learning the languages and libraries and making your own engine than by using an engine (this also probably the best way to go if you want to be an engineer in the industry. If you want to be a level designer, either one is fine, but using an engine will get you started practicing sooner).

Neither is wrong, really. Different strokes.
