More dialog progress, I added simple speech bubbles so they characters can talk outside of using the standard dialog system.
Next step will be adding some indicator that someone is talking, so they play can know if someone is literally talking behind his back.

there are more 1MAs than even grills are trying to 1MA at this point, but 1MA games have 99.99% mortality rate since deving a game that isn't complete shit or pong takes months of full time work and almost nobody can afford that, even if you are a need it still means giving up your whole social life as well, so you game is either shit or you have no free time at all
deving with multiple people leaves you with decent free and work time

The 1MA has always been a meme. Real devs with actual real progress and a promise of a finished game are not 1MA.

Meanwhile the C++ tryhard l2art barely have a running demo.

It feels slow but I don't want the game to run too fast for people who aren't too good at it, so I guess I'll add an optional faster difficulty.

Someone suggested leaving the cakies behind when they die, because I guess a pile of smooshed cupcakes is a thing they wanted? I don't know.

Not sure if I care for it yet, but showing for feedback anyway.

I've been doodling all night so this is all I got.

I'm glad you guys like the agdg-tan design this time, I will try to draw better images of her if they're going to actually be used for things. I am embarrassed by my sketches now.

And that was a stupid idea, unless you plan to have room transitions allowing you to clean up the sprites once in a while.
>>
>>149349772
That seems a bit macabre considering the cute tone of the game. Like piles of cupcake corpses. I think they should just disappear. Imagine playing mario and being like look at all those dead goombas.

RoR had persistent corpse sprites, and it worked fine. I think it's a neat effect, but as the other poster said, it probably doesn't fit the lighthearted, cutesy theme of the game too well.

I kind of like the player having battles where they can see the enemy bullets but not the enemy themselves. But on the other hand I agree that the feedback is not there and even with better feedback it might not be great gameplay. Currently my intention is to only use the situation sparingly by designing levels that don't allow it and then improve the hit feedback. I'd like to have somewhat nonlinear levels so it could be the player's choice to engage in this kind of combat. There is also a good chance that I will say fuck it and add the distance cap. Oh shit I just remembered I want to add damage attenuation anyway.

That's because these threads are filled with delusional people who think that they are making good stuff, when in reality it is just a steaming pile of shit.
There are like less than 10 games that could be considered decent in these threads in the past few months, half of them won't ever even be completed probably.
As for myself, I'd like to think I am self-aware and I'm quite confident that I can finish a decent game, though in the eyes of others my game probably is garbage as well.

Transitions would probably clean most of the sprites if I were to keep this in.

I wouldn't use it for cakies though, I don't think. Story-wise they aren't important enough to warrant it.

>>149349974
There are a few enemies that I have planned to leave behind corpses, so it's not entirely outside the theme. I'm just not sure it works for the cakies.

I think if you really have the time and put in the effort, it's possible to polish a shit into a diamond. We just need to take a lot of user feedback from the demos we put up.
I didn't realize how shitty my controls were until I watched some of you guys on youtube play it. And I hope once I put in some better controls, someone will point out another shitty thing for me to fix. Eventually it will be decent.

std::shared_ptr is bloated.
its a bad excuse for "i dont know who owns this memory, so everyone can own it" and therefore is needlessly ref counted; which as you know causes an increment on sharing, and a decrement and conditional deconstruction of the object when one goes out of scope.

i really hope you havent fallen for the shared_ptr meme. you should really be thinking in terms of memory ownership and implement something like a owner/borrower type pointer

agreed, rust nailed it and we gotta work around it in C++ to get the same behavior.

my biggest beefs with unique_ptr is mainly do to the verbosity of common operations like getting access to the raw pointer. small thing but enough to annoy me a little too much. iirc then i also remember having some strange behaviors with containers of weak_ptrs

There's nothing wrong with C++'s type system though.
And Rust like most modern languages these days tries to be the end-all with gimmicks instead of a rounded foundation.
Which is why it will be replaced with ten more gimmicks who will be replaced by ten more.

C++ is a hodgepodge of "modern" features atop a shaky foundation. Hence the need for the "ISO core guidelines".

Rust starts from Hindley-Milner, adds affine types and linear capabilities and adapts it to a systems programming language. All the bells and whistles are purely in the standard library.

Have spurious and excessive language features is not a bad thing. If the dev team sticks to one set of language features and conventions, this should not be an issue. Code analysis tools can spot when devs use features that are not within the set conventions they adopt.

In fact, having more language features could be an advantage in some cases.

>Integrating with an environment that uses a more advanced GC can be quite challenging. Perhaps the most prominent examples are JavaScript engines like V8 (used by node.js) and SpiderMonkey (used by Firefox and Servo). Integrating with those engines requires very careful coding to ensure that all objects are properly rooted; small mistakes can easily lead to crashes. These are precisely the kind of memory management problems that Rust is intended to eliminate.
>To bring Rust to environments with advanced GCs, we plan to extend the compiler with the ability to generate “trace hooks”. These hooks can be used by a GC to sweep the stack and identify roots, making it possible to write code that integrates with advanced VMs smoothly and easily. Naturally, the design will respect Rust’s “pay for what you use” policy, so that code which does not integrate with a GC is unaffected.
Rust is not getting a GC.

is anyone here good at interpreting grammars? this is ecmascript (e.g. javascript/unityscript)

where BindingPattern is for example, an object literal, how does this production actually allow the form "var x = { }" ? It seems to be saying that you can only write
>var { } = something
which makes no sense to me or
>var x = (not an object literal)
but everyone uses that with object literals and it's consistent with other languages

basically why is there not a production where you can have
>BindingIdentifier = BindingPattern?
Initializer does not seem to allow BindingPattern as an assignment expression, and if it did, what would be the point of having a BindingPattern on the left hand side anyway?

I'm using GM and trying to make piercing laser attacks work.
What I do so far is set beginning and end coordinates and draw the laser in between.
But I don't really know how to find the first enemy object the laser would hit, and the second, etc. until I reach max enemy piercing amount. (I already got piercing bullets working though).

I guess I could use collision_line? If it finds multiple instance, it'll only return one. The GM manual doesn't say which, so I did a quick test and it looks like it returns the closest from beginning coordinates. But I'm not sure if that's always the case.
And then what? Do I use collision_line again, beginning from the first target found in the same direction, until I reach the max amount of piercing attacks or the max range of the laser?
Is that a good idea or will I just waste my time?

So I'm using Gamemaker to make my first ever vidya gam

I want to write the position of an object to a pair of variables (got that down) and then call them back later as a position so I can respawn the object after a certain period of time

Problem is I don't know what words to use to talk to GMS and tell it to do that, and apparently my google skills are shit because this seems very basic but I can't find it.

What language to I put in the X/Y fields when spawning an object to call them from variables?

Help?

>>149362587
i think you need to study the manual some more, specifically the intro to GML section... or like, take a basic online programming tutorial, since your question is basically saying "i don't understand programming"... that said...

assuming you have object A (the one that needs to be respawned) and object B (the one that stores the position of object A and handles respawning it)

inside one of object B's events you'd store (the instance of) object A's x/y position, something like this

storedX = objectA.x
storedY = objectA.y

then later on you can respawn an instance of objectA at that position like this

instance_create(storedX, storedY, objectA)

make sure you understand the difference between instances (of objects) and objects
>>
>>149362713
>short game

Maybe if it's OK enough to become part of a bundle.
Let's be real, your first game is PROBABLY going to cost you much more money than it will net you. It'll be a while before you can make something that'll put you in the black.

>>149362587
What do you want to do exactly? Remember an object's coordinates before it is destroyed, so you can respawn it here later?
>>
>>149362587
I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. You're wanting to spawn an object using variables as the x and y, right?

You can do this a few ways, depending on how the variables are stored.

If the x and y vars are stored locally in an object, like some kind of spawner or controller object, you can just use the variables themselves.

instance_create(xvar,yvar,object)

If you're referring to a variable elsewhere, you can call that object and get the variable. For example, if the variable is stored in an object called obj_spawner, you could use

instance_create(obj_spawner.xvar,obj_spawner.yvar,object)

Using that object.var setup will allow you to refer to another object's variables.

Finally, if you have other variables or things you want to do with the created object, you can use with(), which essentially is used to issue a command to another object, but you can create an object within the () on with, and it will refer to that new object.

with(instance_create(0,0,object)){
x=other.xvar; y=other.yvar; speed=whatever; hp=whatever;}

etc.

Also, for Googling for Game Maker issues, go to the old GMC forum and search there. The old GM forums have been archived and are hard to search through from Google now, but the new GM forum is shit and has barely any threads.

If your game is just meh, people might try it on demoday but thats gonna be it. If you can't deal with sacrificing a few years of your life to practice a craft, you never gonna reach anything on this market. Literally doing 30cent/hour data jobs on freelancer.com is gonna make you more money then those 3 hour projects that will take you weeks to finish.

I don't understand your problem. If you are doing Respawn.X = Player.X, then just use Respawn.X in the instance_create function.
>>
>>149363621
Should work, as long as:
- The spawner object exists. You may want to preface the code with if instance_exists(obj_spawner) to avoid a fatal error there

- The spawner object has those variables defined, meanign they were created in the Create event, rather than being defined within a Step script or something, where they'd only be temporary variables.
>>
>>149362713
You should post it here to get some idea about what the reception will be. If you get mostly positive comments here then you're good to go.

However, the way you frame this is important. Say that you are seeking genuine feedback on a game in progress and not "hey heres my finished game going on steam today vote and purchase"
>>
>>149363854
>You may want to preface the code with if instance_exists(obj_spawner) to avoid a fatal error there
Except if it's a fatal error to not have a spawner object.
>>
>>149363416
A destroyed object cannot keep its coordinates, and variables can only be stored in objects. Therefore you need to create an object which will store the player's position every step. Good fits: ideally, whatever will be creating your player. Otherwise, an all-purpose "Control" object, or a temporary "Coordinate" objects.

Then, when you create your player again, retrieve the data stored from the object in question to know the coordinates.

Rust is cool, but has anyone ever made a game in it?

It's under pretty heavy development right now. I also heard that OGL code has to be shoved into unsafe blocks which is irritating.

And that's if you're going down the SDL+OGL route, which is a long and difficult journey for an indie game to make.

Dungeon Break dev here

For piercing projectiles, I do the following:

All of my enemy objects are parented as obj_enemy, so rather than having the bullet/gun/player check for collisions with enemies, do it the other way around. Wherever in your code you're wanting to check for collisions, do something like:

with(obj_enemy){

if collision_line(coordinates and shit){

<code for taking damage>

}
}

This will go to EVERY instance of obj_enemy and individually check for that object if they're in the way of your line.

Encode them to increasingly low bitrate .ogg. Do careful listening in headphones to see how much loss there is. q4.0 or q3.0 is enough for a lot of recordings to have only minor lossiness.

Also DO NOT re-encode a .ogg to another .ogg. .wav -> .ogg is the ONLY option.

Ignore the anons saying 192kbps or the like. They're audiophile elitists that think sound quality matters more than it does, not to mention vorbis can't encode to bitrates that specific. Also sample rate simply does not matter with .ogg, so 44100hz is fine.

It's not either lossless wav or 192kbps.
320kbps or V0 is MUCH better than 192 and the quality difference is extremely minimal compared to wav.

Monolith dev here.

Piercing weapons are using list functionality. Every bullet has a list stored to it called hitlist. When the bullet and enemy collide, they do all the bullet hitting enemy stuff you would expect, and add that enemy's ID to the bullet's hitlist.

Then, around the actual collision, we check if the enemy is on the bullet's hitlist, and, if so, the collision does not occur:

if bullet.hitlist>0
if ds_list_find_index(bullet.hitlist,self.id) != -1
exit;

Monolith currently doesn't feature hitscan weapons - laser sort of is, I guess, but it works a bit differently and actually also uses hitlist exactly like this.

Aside: If you don't know how lists work, I or someone else could probably help out with that, but it seems beyond the scope of this post.

Rotational velocidensity affects all audio files encoded with lossy compression. These include mp3, aac, and ogg.

The most notable effect of rotational velocidensity is the loss of bitrate in files. A lossy audio file will lose an average of 12kbps a year. But, this can vary greatly depending on the type of storage media used.

Examples:

SATA HDD: ~12kbps
IDE HDD: ~15kbps
SCSI HDD: ~7kbps
DVD: ~16kbps
CD-R/RW: >21kbps

This can be overcome by compressing audio using lossless formats such as FLAC, APE, or TTA. These formats are designed to never lose quality over time, and will sound the same right now as they will in 10 years.

of course I don't know of a toaster that would need that that also has an extra 35+GB lying around for a random game, so it was ill conceived

but preferring high decode speed codecs like adpcm, speex, opus speech etc could have some perf benefit at the cost of filesize

Well the guns in my game use piercing hitscan using this exact system, so I can tell you it does indeed work. Forcing each enemy object to check if they're between the bullet's start and end point, and if so, registering a hit, is a pretty straightforward idea. Whether it can be implemented into your engine, I dunno, but it definitely does work.

My laser weapon actually functions as a projectile that resolves its entire travel from origin to end point in a single while loop. It checks for collision with walls and enemies every frame and stops when it meets either (assuming this is not overridden with a keyword like piercing)

The reason for handling it this way is that it means the speed and direction can be manipulated on a step-by-step basis, which is important because lasers can also bounce off walls and be homing, which both require direction changes during the course of a single laser frame's resolution.

Separate check. The enemy can see the player if the player is within the FOV *and* the player is not behind something.

The way you proposed is going to be really computationally intensive for no better result.

Vampire Bit has 8bit-ish music, and the dev said he's using the following two software:
http://www.synthfont.com/
http://famitracker.com/
>>
>the player is not behind something

this is the problem how do l do this? the only thing l can think of is using raycast for every direction on the field of view
>>
Handy audio quality chart:

Bitrate
0-128: utter trash
192: acceptable for lo-fi audio like 8-bit but not ideal, avoid for hi-fi audio
256-320: ideal quality-to-size ratio
lossless: unnecessary

Hz
0-22k: utter trash
44.1k: ideal
48+: only necessary if you plan on processing the audio further, no difference in listening
>>
>>149370498

Can you make missiles spawn around the guy instead from his ass in circle and rotate for a cull cycle around the character before flying off?
That will add game mechanic in a sense that you are not overpowered and actually have to wait a second or two before blasting everything in sight and it looks good and you will have clear view of position where you character is in whole that mess.

Sorry if this is a retarded question. I made a post about this last thread before bed, but I genuinely don't understand what I'm doing.

I'm using mp_grid functions. I crudely followed a tutorial in order to get the basic concepts down (and by get them down I mean copy the tutorial and hope it clicks).

With I have the path start in a script that runs when the npc sees the player and goes to their last location. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the script updates once they start the path (they don't look around for the player or listen out for them from the other scripts).

Do instances basically shut down when they start a path? I'm not sure if I'm just being retarded because even after reading a few topics in the doc I'm just not getting it or if I'm just missing something important.

Pic is my primitive code. If I put the scripts inside the condition, it runs for like half a second then just follows the path without using the scripts anymore.

Okay but those are still the votes of other people. That's not "bringing your own votes".

You make it sound like getting greenlit requires registering a thousand fake steam profiles and voting yourself.

Really it's about having enough people interested in you and your game. If you're a nobody and your game is boring it's not because you didn't bring your own votes it's because you're a nobody and your game is boring.

Yeah, I watched your video, but to be honest I didn't find it all that helpful. I watched about 12 minutes of the video and really only heard you bash pretty much every single mechanic of the game, including things like being able to attack while unarmed, being able to double jump, and being able to interact with things. Which is fine, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but that kind of feedback isn't entirely helpful, since most of those are pretty important game mechanics that are unlikely to change.

you can have ten thousand fans but if none of them have or are willing to get steam accounts and buy a game and then vote for you, they're not getting you through greenlight.
steam is having a BBQ but they wont let you join unless you BYOV and even when you do all the good spots are already taken, and they're gonna split up what you brought and give it to other people..... you wouldve been better off not coming to the steam BBQ and just bringing your votes to itchio where they could become purchasers right away.

Are you thinking of the right video? Those are not things I would "bash." I didn't bash anyone's game. The only things I remember really having any real "issue" with was the delay before you can move again after attacking and certain AI behaviors. I also hoped to find more weapons or items earlier in the demo. Other than that all I noticed was real minor stuff and "this is obviously still very early" kinds of things.

I realize the video isn't great or anything but just wanted to point it out in case you might take something from it.
