It's fragile but it's capable of dishing out damage and is extremely fun to play due to massive jump power, there is no area in the game you can't flat foot jump to as an escape route etc. It can also run a few different types of energy based builds (with MGs for flavor) which is nice.

It pretty desperately needs some leg structure quirks at the least though. Otherwise it's basically exactly what it should be as a 40t mech. Jenner IICs are better on the whole due to being able to take more DHS and increase their sustained DPS, but the Viper can bring more raw firepower if it chooses to (excluding SRM bomb Jenner) or actually run 4MGs quite effectively to shred components. 5SPL + 4MG has been wonderful.

It's no shitmech by any stretch, but it's not going to be making waves either. It could use some buffs but it's overall pretty okay. You won't be seeing them used very often over the Jenner IIC, and the Cheetah still has ECM for scouting but that's literally all the Cheetah gets over it. Shadowcat also makes a better sniper at +5t. The Viper doesn't fill any particular niche exceedingly well, but it's not bad at the things it does at all.

The Zeus can take an XL too, the Victor is almost required to have an XL, it's one of the reasons it's never used, among many others. The Banshee and Battlemaster only use an XL to boat lasers and poke shit from a distance. None of that is even remotely comparable to a 90 toner in the stylings of a slightly faster Highlander that will carry mostly brawler builds.

Likewise the Highlander halfasses every single SRM build it can run. We're also only talking about one variant, the other Cyclops can do 4UAC5, 3AC5 2PPC, and no one cares about the others. There's no point of comparison for the brawling Cyclops because no assault mech, IS or Clan, can do the builds this one can. It's a unique mech.

Also, IS LPLs aren't exactly a long range trading weapon. And XL engines aren't even a reason Victors aren't used anymore, the reason they aren't used is because of power creep, ruined jumpjets, and Timber Wolves.

Fire the torso lrms and arm lrms with at least 0.5 seconds delay between each other to not trigger ghostheat. Tank with your right side until you go through at least half your ammo then you can try to spread damage evenly with your undamaged side. Take advantage of your high narc mount which doesn't take much to peek.

Once you can afford an xl, then running a srm build will be a much better use of the mech.

VPR-C, all stock omnipods: 4MG, 1.5t of ammo, 5SPL, 1DHS, 12 head armour

VPR-M, all stock omnipods: 6SPL, 2DHS, I did run it with 3DHS and 1 head armour and some off the arms but the arms are too vital I decided so now I just deal with the free .3t

VPR-A, all stock omnipods: 4ML (all ST mounts), 5 extra DHS, stripped left arm (and head down to 12 maybe? Can't remember and can't check atm)

VPR-PRIME: both A STs, 1LPL 3ML

Haven't played the B or the D. I've run some missile builds (3ASRM4, 3SRM4 with 2SL) but wouldn't really recommend them. I also did a memebuild with 1ERPPC 3SRM2 which I would recommend for funsies, but it's obviously not very good. I also haven't done any of the super energy spam builds yet either.

Customized mechs would be a good way of distinguishing the player characters and main villains as hero units. If everyone else is in shitmechs it makes sense that an upstart bunch of mercs can pummel their way through larger numbers of House units.

I DO hope that there are some things that are locked. If they don't lock some equipment then there's not going to be a lot of reasons to have a large mech roster. Hardpoints matter in MWO because of the way the shooting mechanics work but in a strategy game a lot of mechs are going to meld together in what they can do.

It's best builds are either 4x LL, or 2xLPL 2xML. Slow as sin with those builds, but you aren't going to get speed AND damage on this chassis.
The Cicada does the 2xLPL 2xML but better, because they're not tied TO THE FUCKING RIDICULOUSLY LARGE AND FLIMSY NIGGER ARMS HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

Still managed to get 900 damage games out of it, but that requires your opponents to be blind, deaf and retarded.

the Crescent Hawks Inception and Revenge were single player.
Mechwarrior 1 was single player
Mechwarrior 2 was single player
Ghost Bears legacy and Mercenaries was single player.
Mechwarrior 3 and Pirates Moon was single player.
Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance, Black Knight, and mercenaries was single player.
Mechcommander 1 and 2 were single player.
Earthsiege, Earthsiege 2, and Starsiege were single player. Front mission took the star-crossed route of taking a great turn based tactics game and made it into clunky 3rd person action games and an MMO before outright dying.

Then there was a gap of a decade, and nobody seems willing to do a decent single player game of anything anymore.

Is there anything out there right now, barring the HBS title coming out in over a years' time, that will sate my want for an atmospheric Story-and-mission-driven, immersive, giant robot gaming experience? The modding community has done bupkis for single player gamers, most of the old stuff is horribly unstable on anything but legacy hardware running windows 95, and PGI are catering exclusively to the e-sports community. Honestly, if I want something multiplayer I'll just run some tabletop gaming, but what I want is something immersive, where I am pulled into the lore, not bullshit tier lists, Buffs/Nerfs, and K/D ratios.

Is there anything on the market, now, that hits the mark that I might have missed?

No. PGI has the full license for full control over digital MW media from Microsoft until 2020, at which point the license will need to be renewed from Microsoft again. PGI presently has full control and say so over anyone wanting to make any Mechwarrior, Battletch etc video game.

HBS did pay PGI money to use the art assets. PGI is not going to be receiving money from sales of the game however, and neither is Microsoft.

PGI just hired people earlier this year and I can tell you right now the Kodiak and Unseen just sold a fuckload. Phoenix Hawks sold far more than they deserved to. The Night Gyr is going to have healthy sales too or I'll eat my hat.

PGI is definitely making money and to think otherwise is living in a fantasyland. If they were bleeding money they'd have downsized by now. Their steam player counts might be low but if they're half to a third of the playerbase then it's sitting alright for their 60~man team.

As for brand awareness, HBS's Battletech is diversifying the digital options. Don't think for a minute PGI hasn't been successful enough for what had otherwise been a dead and useless brand for a decade. They've gotten a lot of bad press for their (in)actions sure, but they've also shown the interest in the brand. HBS is going to reap the rewards from that, and both of them win in that case.

From what I see, it's like someone crossbred the (L)Cicada with the ACH. Really mobile, including jump capacity but packs a light-style arsenal of SPL/MGs.

They made sure it had one thing going for it, and that's being agile as fuck. It can't really snipe like a Shadow Cat or pack firepower like a Nova/SCH, but it plays the light-style game well enough that it can chase and bully all but the fastest.
