Tip for you guys juggling with moods in crammed places!

Remake your beds if they are shoody or poor or even normal when you have a constructor who is skilled. Masterwork or even Excellent, Superior and Good beds give really happy thoughts regardless how crammed their bedroom is!

It also makes dining rooms more beautiful the better the furniture is and you also train your crafter!

Also if the space allows it, always make double beds as you never know who marries who!

Not really.

Constructors are vital for any base. Artists are not. A skilled worker makes defenses and after doing all that work on the walls you can also make them into profitable crafters. Art, especially grand sculpting takes forever while furniture is made in a day. It's a good way to get rid of perhaps all those blocks you have lying around.

Level 20 Construction = Masterwork furniture items give a +100 beauty bonus to the room they're in and sell for 1000 silver

jesus christ i just got this game yesterday and im having a fucking blast.
I thought this sort of game would lose my attention after a few hours but so far its paced quite well and ive progressed through the raids and stuff with satisfying difficulty.
i had my best shooter with the survival rifle take out 2 of a 5 man raid party who were equiped with emp grenades and an incendiary launcher. flanked with my other shittier guys with pistols and forced the retreat of the raiders.
then today i found a room inside the mountain i was occupying filled with 3 grubs and 2 scythers or whatever they are. Set up some deadfall traps and shitty gun turrets with my dudes equiped with the incendiary launcher and some pistols in the back behind some sand bags.
my retarded camel Bessy got stuck in the firefight and we nearly died from heat exhaustion but we did that shit. Now its chill time again, i just bought an assault rifle and traded a bunch of materials for 2k silver, going to maybe start up a brewery? idk my colony is pretty shoddy but thats what i expected from my first playthrough. I've survived a lot longer then i expected, the game is pretty forgiving sometimes and othertimes not so much im looking at you infections.

They're simple on purpose so you can fill in the blanks with your mind automatically, filling in more detail and giving more personality to the colonists than if they had just added visual noise.

You could try replacing limbs with really severe scars, but unless you have the silver to replace several limbs with expensive bionics you'll probably have to cycle in fresh colonists with no wounds.

Remember, scars can be prevented entirely by immediate medical care. Even severe wounds treated with no medicine won't get any scars if you treat it immediately.

It wasn't exactly my idea, but it's retarded that this sort of thing is an issue in the first place. Most games I own don't have this kind of issue. The only games I've had this issue with are this and Stellaris and Stellaris was at least semi-tolerable. Training animals is more or less useless with the current implementation. Hauling is the only place they really shine and most animals can't.

You CAN use dev mode and god mode to force them to haul but that's pretty cheesy.

Move the entire defense so you can utilize the vent.
You might not be able to do it now but future planning is important.

And increase the distance of the entrance to your defences.
Rifles & Snipers will have enough range to take cover at either side and shoot down the funnel.

Space the turrets more so their death explosions don't damage each other & colonists hiding behind the walls.

Don't have a single tile path blocked with traps.
In my own experience it makes it more likely for sappers to spawn rather than normal raiders.

My own preference is a more open defence with walls blocking alternate approaches, but not funneling entirely. Feel it works somewhat better, but maybe thats just me.

Also adding on this.

Depending on your biome & area you may want to have exterior space for farming/power later.
If you've built in to the side of a mountian with an enclosed exterior area on the other side, thats fine, but larger colonies start to need a huge amount of exterior space for farming & power generation.
Keep that in mind if you are going for a long game.

Really the main thing is spacing the turrets more & the bit about range for snipers. The rest is circumstance & preference.

Darkness will not stop bullets (obviously), but it will increase the miss chance of anyone shooting at a target in darkness. When in a firefight, it helps to keep your colonists in the darkness while your enemies are in lighted areas. A good way to use darkness is to build bunker systems to provide your colonists with walled cover, plus a roof over their heads to keep out stormy weather and unwanted sunlight.

we've got a mine a little ways down south too that we get iron from and so on. trying to keep it low tech is kinda hard though, cos dudes show up with personal shields and guns which kind of fucks up the tribal playstyle cos melee weps tend to get trumped by guns.

The detail is there but really fucking hard to see given the small size of everything and complete absence of any kind of shading and border outlines.

Don't get me wrong, Factorio is a great game that l love and I think it has some really nice sprites. But I wouldn't call it a good looking game. I wouldn't really call Rimworld a good looking game either. They both have specific art styles to meet their development budget. Actually if a hive spawns inside mines you've created you've lucked out. Hives are tricky when bugs can get at you in the open and surround.

Take the strip mining I've done in this image. Hives spawned but they were also totally fucked. They're forced into 1 tile corridors and all I had to do was sit one guy with a sniper rifle out of their range and plink at them.

If you have wide open mines consider sending someone with flame weaponry to roast em.

Problem being that on smaller maps there isn't much of that and on larger ones animals tend to congregate around the map edges.
Meaning your colonists have a long as fuck run.
Meaning they get larger toxic build up & less useable meat due to stuff rotting before you can carry it.

I've never had a problem with fallout since I normally run large stockpiles.

Fallout shouldn't be a problem for anyone that's prepared as they should be.

If you've got a small plot of fertile soil, you can produce enough food for an entire season in a week or two. That doesn't even factor in other farm plots, hunting, drop pods, trade, or hydroponics.

The only reason someone should lose to toxic fallout is if they're in VERY early game or if they're playing a difficult biome like ice sheet or extreme desert. Otherwise, it's just lack of adequate preparation.

Colonist AI is notorious for not checking their fucking fire, ever.

You will get friendly fire incidents all the time, and it's not one of those stray bullets hitting a colonist thing its more of a "oh well you're in my way so I'll just shoot through you to get to the enemy" sort of deal. The best way to deal with it is by making defenses that abuse the AI's ability to friendly fire to the maximum.

I've harvested many organs in rimworld so I can say with confidence that its great. After much "trial and error" I've got a rough idea of the optimal organ harvesting order.
Taking either : both lungs, both kidneys, the liver, or the heart results in death even if the surgery is successful. So to get the most bang for your organ slave you want 1 lung, 1 kidney, both eyes, the jaw, both ears, the nose, the stomach, and the heart. harvesting organs also gives mad experience in medicine, and within my first year my psychopath doctor got to level 15 in medicine. On a semi-related note, if you can get bionic parts, you should replace the hands and eyes of your doctor first as it greatly increases the skill of your doctor to the point where medicine is not even really necessary.

That is why building into a mountain is a great plan.

Just be sure to create a buffer area between your outer walls and some grass/trees by cutting them all up, or else you'll roast your people to death.

Mountain bases are usually easier to defend, have much less to fear from fire, are virtually immune to lightning strikes.

On the cons, there are the infestations, the fact that your rooms will look like shit until you redo the walls, and chances are you aren't gonna get a Geothermal Vent near your base, so your can't easily make use of the best power source.

Crop Blight is the only one that can kill a run with no chance of survival; everything else is just git gud

Even Crop Blight can be prepared for by having larger harvests and stockpiles and just gitting gud

I've had multiple runs survive volleys of crop blight; fallout; volcanic winter and I deal with long term diseases on every single game without too much trouble

Lucky's Hideout Part 3
As if the gods had realized what a horrendous struggle Lucky had been through so far Lucky got a lucky break. The maneating boars outside the base stopping Lucky from saving his mother left and Lucky was able to save her. She made a full recovery and left. Traders arrived, selling steel, wood and components Lucky desperately needed to expand the base. Even a drop arrived with a large amount of marble.

The base was expanded with a proper fridge, a storage room outside of the barracks, a new wind turbine that solved the power issues and a new battery. There was even enough food to last months and months without a crop. Everything was looking up for Lucky.

And then everything went wrong.

Can anyone explain to me how the moisture pump works? I can't place it directly into the marsh but I have a few areas I'd like to make dry to build more defenses. I put it next to a swampy area and left it there for a few days and nothing happened.

Also what power source do you guys prefer the most? I love the new generators but they produce so little. I was thinking batteries and wind turbine with 3 solar panels "under it" being an efficient way to generate power but it looks so damn ugly though since they don't align and I'm autistic like that. Geothermal is just random.

I want to just wack up the defenses with turrets without making my base look like another choke point simulator.

I think this is a tribal thing. If you settle as a tribe those fuckers prefer to eat shit raw. It's just how they are wired.

As a bonus they rarely, if ever, get food poisoning. So they have lead stomach but really crappy appetites. They also always eat raw meat first followed with berries and then corn. They don't like to eat raw potatoes or rice.

Only go with Chillax one if you are going to rely on hydropods. If you settle in winter areas with no season to grow hydropods and hunting are literally your only source of food.

So you have to plan way ahead, from day one. Don't invite too many people and simply put if wanderers join in you euthanize them before they become too social or beat them to death and eat them.

Basically you have to be ruthless and secure food as quickly as possible. The only mistake you did there was not being prepared.

Randy can get casual too. The point is it's random. Classic actually is the hardest. Randy can just put any events in a short span and they can vary from harmless to brutal.

Cassandra basically gives you a constant wave of enemies and bad events and it is guaranteed to just get harder and harder.

Chillax has long periods between raids and bad events, but they are brutal ones. I like her the most because I get to build inftrastructure. The biggest problem with her is that trade caravans also take LONG between each other so you are basically on your own on your map.

You build them near swampy areas, they slowly expand their effect to their max radius and convert all wet tiles into regular soil.

It takes about 1 entire year for the area to fully expand, i.e. it's regular tynan retardation in full force.

I recommend spamming them 1 or 2 tiles apart along the coastline.

Choke points is the essence of defenses in every game with ranged weapons and terrain obstacles. It's using your brain to your advantage, nothing bad about it.

You can't but I do hope we can eventually, being able to build vehicles, explore, go on the offensive and raid bandit camps, and rescue your prisoners is basically the only thing the game is missing for me over Dwarf Fortress. No z-axis is honestly not a big deal to me, but the fact that the game is so confined really hampers it.

There's a lot of content that would need to be added to make it worthwhile though. Like making a completely new game.

Use 2 doors with at least 1 tile of space in between for freezers.
The space acts as a temprature buffer between the freezer and your colony.
Freezer stays colder, needs fewer coolers to sustain.

You should also do this with main colony entrances if you are being a dorf.
Hugely reduces the impact of harsh winters or heatwaves.

If it was airlocked, 1 cooler would be enough for a space somewhat larger than that.
2 coolers can keep a space around 3x larger frozen, with a 3rd cooler kept turned off in case of heat waves.
