I'm not knowledgeable on everything related to pre-block, but I know most relevant matters around framedata can be figured out in training mode.

Basically three questions I can't test myself at the moment. At what frame does pre-block start - Is it soon before the move would connect or is it the same frame a move nearby is input? You'll probably need to test these yourself, but from what I was able to see, preblock is triggered as soon as a nearby attack comes out, but only from the point character, not the assist. Jump attacks don't trigger it while standing, only if you're crouching.

The most relevant thing I could find that preblock affects universally is the case where Up-Back is beat by low attacks, where prejump is cancelled by standing preblock, guaranteeing the low hit.

That's all I know about preblock. There might be some tech with it if you search harder, but there are no unblockable setups or anything like that.

360s are easy because of cardnial inputs, all you need is all the directions and then the final direction and attack. Diagonals are optional.

So you can do halfmoon back/forward (623/426) and then jump+attack for the motion (6238+PP/4268+PP)

Other options include sonicboom to flashkick motion. (4628+PP)

720's can be done if your fast enough and landing from a jump, standing 720s can be done if you are FAST AS FUCK . I have never done a 1080 and don't think I ever will.

Smash bros has one attack button and one special button and the difference comes from your position (standing, jumping) direction held, and whether stick was tilted and tapped in that direction. But hey, at least taunt is it's own button.
Though depending on which smash game inputs can be even faster than games like skullgirls.

There's also divekick which has two buttons which each do one thing.

SGs is extremely lenient with inputs, and combos aren't too complicated to pull off since a lot of the attacks chain together. Go back and play some older Arcade fighting games on MAME and you'll really appreciate how much smoother Skullgirls feels. There are actual gameplay reasons for these inputs, but SGs removes a lot of the BS ones you'll find in some other games, like pretzel motions and shit.

You just gotta get adjusted to doing the attacks. It's like warming your fingers up to an instrument. As others have said, the keyboard can work as long as you don't have ghosting problems.

Yeah, they made the taunt inputs wacky on purpose. A few Taunts are useful to learn, but most of them are just for swag.

There are a couple reasons they're not mapped to one button though.
1 - they wanted to make sure you didn't accidentally do them while trying to perform other Specials
2- they didn't want to map it to something like the Select button which has special functions in training mode.
3- they didn't want to give a clear advantage to control-types that would have access to more than the 12-buttons you get on most pads/sticks (counting stick-assists) .

A surprisingly good combo is simply c.MP > c.HP > H A-Train > Super. Big Band does a lot of damage, so even just a few good hits can do better than some other characters' BnBs.

More advanced Big Band combos are kinda tricky, since he relies a lot of air-to-ground-to-air stuff, but if your defense is good, he can be seriously deadly.

Shine is pretty broken dude, especially compared to something like Bella's Reflector.
Yeah, it won't win you matches by itself (against good players), but it's never a bad option.

Bella can't stand across the screen and just hold Reflector out for several seconds to force an approach.
And she can't slide up close and use Reflector to beat out every normal with a frame 1 cancellable hitbox that stuns long enough to combo into itself.

Nobody would have let Mike get away with that shit.

- Fixed the longstanding bug where sometimes Player 1's inputs would be duplicated as Player 2 on the Training Mode dummy / on the Controller Config screen! Now everyone can use Training Mode normally. :^) (Thanks BlueFeena for helping!)
- Fixed a random crash in super-shadow rendering when Feral Edge collides with Motor Brigade. (Thanks Triblue for sending me crash replays!)

Replay Playback
- Pressing MP while watching a replay will enable the "simple" Attack Data display. Note that it begins when you enable it, so if you enable it during a combo the current-combo-damage values will be incorrect.
- Pressing MK during combat, not round transitions or the pause menu, while watching a replay will toggle 25% slow-motion on/off. (Thanks Liam for reminding me.)

Bug Reporting
- If you have Replays enabled and the game crashes during a fight in any mode where Replays are saved, it will automatically save CRASH_REPLAY.ini and .rnd in the normal replay folder. Renaming those files to a valid replay number and playing it back in Replay Theater SHOULD reliably crash the game again. If it does, send 'em to me somehow!

Does anyone use a stick for this game? For the stunfest tournament for SG, I think (not too familiar with the tournaments, sorry), I saw most of them using a controller. And I'm not that sure if the input latency from stick will be an issue or not as I was planning on getting a Hori RAP4.

I think it's native to the PCB that's used or other miscellaneous issues.
teyah.net/sticklag/results.html compares both sticks and pads' input latency, with the Akishop Customs PS360+ being the benchmark for most of them. I dunno much more than that, and I don't even know if there will be any additional latency (or how much, rather) when using joy2key or whatever third-party software to get it working with a PC.

Pad has some latency too but you might be used to it already, I think. Don't quote me on that though.

I think a lot of players play pad because they're used to it and everyone's got one (and SG works well on pad), but plenty of SG experts play on stick too.
I believe even MikeZ plays on stick. Really, any good DInput compatible device *should* work well for SG, unless it's just a piece of crap to begin with.

And yeah, I heard there is some extra lag when using something like J2k, but ideally you shouldn't have to use that.

I actually switched from stick to pad and I really prefer it.
Plus I like have macros for assist. Hitting diagonal buttons in the middle of chains is just super awkward and impossible for me I don't know how people do it.

Thankfully, SG doesn't use crap like pretzel motions, so that's part of why it works nicely for pad.
You'll still have to practice your charging though, but charge times in SG are short.

Not a stick guy myself, but it sounds like the only real hurdles with sticks are with newer devices, like stuff using PS4 drivers and bluetooth.

In general tho, don't sticks just run on similar drivers that other console compatible devices do? I just know plenty of people haven't required J2k to use them on PC, including for Skullgirls. Obviously if your thing is ultra custom, it might need some extra fiddling, but apparently Out-the-Box stuff like the TEs work no prob on PC for games like Skullgirls.

Games like SFV are fucked up tho, because they require XInput for no reason, while most sticks apparently use DInput.
Seems like it was just their excuse to kill legacy support for older sticks and sell those TE2s.

One reason is probably because I rarely have ever played charge-characters, but I want to give myself an excuse to not play on pad if possible.

I read that Madcatz sticks had their own drivers or something, so it wasn't necessary to use third-party programs to make it compatible, but I dunno about Hori sticks. I was actually considering to just buy a Hori stick and mod it with a custom PCB if it ended up feeling like there was too much latency.

And that doesn't sound surprising to me honestly. Though I have a stigma against Madcatz since the last time I checked, their sticks were rather bad, which was several years ago.

They haven't confirmed anything yet, just the potential of one.
What's confirmed is that they are working on new animations for SG Mobile (so far we know there are new Filia and Peacock anims coming), and that the number of animations needed to make a functional mobile version of a character is far less than for standard SGs.

So, in theory, they could create a new character for mobile in less time, and then hold on to those assets to potentially reuse in a SG2 if it ever gets made. This is something they want to do, so we can assume they're going to try and make it happen.

Christ, digging up info on Skullgirls isn't easy. I can't find absolutely anything about the fate of the game in Japan after Cyberfront got closed, just some news in December about Cyberfront getting dissolved by a parent company. Not a single post at Skullheart or NeoGAF from Lab Zero, just a few posts from David Bartholow trying to get info from Cyberfront representatives. Well you're looking for some pretty specific stuff. I believe Cyberfront going down did cause the game to pulled from PSN in Japan until ArcSys stepped in. I remember when they announced 2E some people in JP and SEA were saying in Comments that they couldn't get Encore on PSN at the time.

I don't think that had an impact on the PC version though, and obviously not the Nesica version, so Japanese gamers still had access to the game. I wouldn't be surprised if PC was still the more popular version in both countries anyway.

You need Steam to use Online multiplayer. A Steam key should already be in the Bundle. In general, Humble almost always provides both versions for whichever games have them (DRM-Free Skullgirls was introduced the first time it was in a Humble Bundle)

Right now Japanese audio is only in the ArcSys PS4/Vita physical release in Japan, which you have to import. ArcSys foot the bill on that dub, so as much as LabZero would like to have it available everywhere, don't hold your breath for it showing up in the other versions. The licensing costs are apparently very high.

Offline is what they mean by "local multiplayer", so yeah.

It's possible to mod the sounds in Skullgirls using Skullmod, but that's a lot of work. First, you'd have to get quality rips from the PS4 japanese dub (which might not exist yet, I dunno), then you'd have to swap them out for all of the English soundfiles you unload through Skullmod. The filenames may or may not matchup, and a lot of the sound files contain multiple VA samples, so you have to *know* which sounds go with which file. There's a LOT to sift through between In-Game sounds and StoryMode too.

It's a job, and not entirely worth it since the import actually gives you access to both English and Japanese audio with more flexible features (Character-to-character audio swap along with the Announcers). A mod would be a ton of work that would only let you play with one language. I'd rather hold out for the chance they can get it on PC legit.

Oh, and also a warning. If you post any content on YT with Japanese audio, you'll potentially get flagged by ArcSys.

Also - something else that keeps happening is launch, then attack and somehow I end up underneath them. Do the attacks just stop your vertical movement when you use them? Do I need to time them better?

Yep pretty much, don't get discouraged though, once you get the hang of it, it flows like butter and it's lots of fun. One more thing, you're going to hit a point where you have to use ground recovery, it tells you to move in the direction you want when you get launched, but when you do that, it doesn't do anything, what it doesn't tell you is that you need to press an attack button while moving in a direction.

Also, you don't NEED to do the tutorials, and if you're having trouble with one, skip it and do the next one, practice for a bit in training mode and come back to it.

Note: don't gorilla mash out your inputs. The quicker you clean those up, the better your execution will be. For Filia specifically, pressing forward twice after your jump or pressing two punch buttons will do an air dash and mess up that particular chain. For basic chains, Skullgirls is very lenient so you don't have to panic mash when trying to get every input in.

Really in depth training mode. Color coded hitboxes, hurtboxes, collision, etc. Startup, active, recovery, and frame advantage for every move. And more.

And yeah, the material can be overwhelming at first, but stuff in the Skullgirls Tutorials is far from the most complicated stuff you'll deal with in traditional fighting games. Heck, even for Smash.

Like dude, imagine if Nintendo had given Melee a tutorial for Advanced Techniques. Most Casuals would have been throwing their controllers at SHFFLing and Ledge Teching, and that's the stuff you're EXPECTED to know in the game at this point.

Skullgirls is pretty lenient on inputs compared to a lot of fighters, so just get used to your controller and develop your muscle memory. It'll start to click eventually.

Beat Extend is the best DP assist and Brass H completely dominates neutral and gives you full control.

On point he's not so hot.
The entire cast can jump forward + hit jab for a a VERY unreactable overhead that leads into full combos.

He has to make good defensive reads or play his spacing game really well to stay alive.
He's also really powerful behind a long lockdown assist to make his guesses safe, but that requires team set up.

As a person who has actually played both games, if you're playing with a keyboard on PC, be very cautious about trying KOF.
It's not a bad game, but it'll be a real headache for anyone still new to the genre. It's clearly a game designed for stick, and features a lot of the technical frustrations you've probably heard most people contrast with SGs

Netcode and Training Mode in KOF13 are also worse than SGs, so it's harder to learn without an offline scene and dedicated training partners,
And unlike SGs, KOF13 has actual legit 30 second Touch of Death combos that are practical and often used in tournaments.They're resource heavy, but you will definitely get hit by them if you're fighting a good player. You really have to learn to hold your losses.

It's too bad Yatagarasu still hasn't implemented GGPO yet. That's the game I'd recommend people go try after playing something like SGs. It has more streamlined gameplay, and in my opinion, is a better entry point for more footsie based 1v1 style fighting.

That depends on the situation, but as far as knowing when to PBGC in general, you can see an indicator for it when you turn on Advanced Attack Data.
The button display in the top middle, that shows IPS, will also flash green during the PBGC window of a pushblock. You can use that with a dummy record to help practice the timing.
