FA is still fun to play, but you're kidding yourself if you ever took online seriously with it.

The only decent multiplayer game From has ever made was Verdict Day. Or maybe Chromehounds, I didn't play that one.

Verdict day still has shitty netcode but at least you only notice it when you have high ping and use high velocity rounds. It doesn't make or break the match unless someone's lagging hard.

Even Dark Souls 2 is a joke. The whole meta is based around counter modifiers and wide area attacks because everyone has to fight 20-50 frames ahead of what's actually happening.

So in both games the ONLY way to hit someone is to either play some heavy mind games and predict their move way in advance, or to trade. Which is why pretty much every PvP build in DS2 relies on counter damage, magic spam, or spin2win.

Someone on Legacy figured out the formula for calculating how your energy drains while charging a weapon and what kind of energy output you would need to neutralize it.
You take the energy consumption during use, divide by the maximum charge time, and then multiply by 60.
Now, speccing for rapid does a few things to laser weapons. Most notably, it cuts the max charge time (so you can charge the weapon faster) and it decreases the energy during use (to make it cost less energy to charge). So, what appears to be going on is that the charge time is decreasing faster than the energy consumption rate. It's true that you need less energy to reach full charge and that it happens faster with rapid, but thanks to that it jacks up the magic output number needed to neutralize the charge, thus making the charge empty your capacity faster.
85% of VD's maps are veritable garbage. Most of the free battle maps in VD fall within this range of garbage. They're lacking in the cover and jumpability that was emblematic of V.
Actually, here's a good way to think about it.
VD's meta is defined by super heavy quads with heavy weapons that gain as much altitude as possible and then float and shoot as much as possible and super light LRJs that abuse Murakumos.
V's meta revolved around LRJs with sniper rifles which, despite having two subcomputers, couldn't lock on fast enough to hit that other fag in his LRJ, meaning you have to dedicate a lot of time to learning when you can make a shot where you don't truly have a lock. Neither of you have time for a true lock because everybody is jumping every which way in a labyrinth of buildings (in which you die if you get lost) which are so tall that they provide the top cover needed to stop float quads from eating everything. It involves a lot more skill.

Sort of but not really. There are regular side missions which are missions. Then you have AC battle missions where it's just a 1v1 (sometimes 2v1) AC fight. So it functions mostly like arena battles but not really. The ACs you fight in these missions also don't show up in the main story at all.

Pretty sure the meta was just less developed in V. I also don't remember much about LRJ snipers being broken or even good in team matches, only in singles. I agree that a lot of maps in VD are dumb but the reasons for that are far more varied than just that. For one, leg types are just straight up unbalanced.

They both had plenty of time to develop. Heck, V's first meta was figured out in a couple weeks. Same for VD, actually.
In any case, snipers weren't really broken, they were just the meta. They were useful in team fights because you could have everybody unload on some guy for a bit and if he manages to wiggle out with just a bit of AP you could send your LRJ sniper to catch up to him and finish him while the rest of the team dogs on some other guy. That said, they were much less prevalent in conquest and much more so in free battle, and that's what matters most because conquest was a horrid broken mess.

V's "Free battle" was better becauase there was simply more people playing it, with a less developed meta. You didn't have to try very hard to win or feel like you were doing well because there was always such a variety of people using fun/gimmicky builds.

VD's meta has nothing to do with sawa quads or kumorabis, those are gimmick builds. It is based around muzzle velocity, counter building, glide boost, and map choice. VD added a ton of weapons that were critical to "filling out" the metagame by giving players more equivalent options on the 3 damage types, so now you could actually employ multiple strategies in a single AC instead of making it rely entirely on one or two gimmicks.

V/VD are the only games in the entire franchise with autosave. And if it wasn't for the multiplayer campaign, I doubt they would have it anyway.

I think it's that JP fans preferred manual save because they could save to multiple locations and have different progress files for story. V/VD doesn't have a progression campaign once you beat story mode anymore (it's more like AC2:AA, in that sense) so there's no point in manual save.

Yeah, there are deductions, but you get infinite retries. Thankfully though, in AC4 and on you get so much money from missions it doesn't matter.

By the time you reach a mission that would get you to huge negative rewards for failing, you're far enough in the game that it really doesn't matter. You have to actively TRY to bankrupt yourself in these games.

Gimmick builds are min-max ACs that focus on just one strategy and relentlessly practice it, designed specifically to cheese players who haven't seen them before or to replace actual knowledge of the game with meme-tastic lolworthy strategies

Dual piles, kumorabis,

Sawa quads are a bit in the middle, in the hands of a newbie they're a gimmick build, but they can be legitimate if used right. Too easy to take down though.

None of those builds are in the 'meta' of ACVD. Meta builds are built to counter what is popular or common. Best example is probably the ongoing back and forth use of 3BR or ACs with 2060+ CE defense. When everyone starts using 3BR, the meta starts stacking CE defense to block it, when everyone starts stacking CE defense, the meta is to stop using 3BR and start using Tansy/pulse guns, when everyone starts using that, the meta is to stack KE/TE defense and the cycle repeats.

Another example of ACVD's meta: KE shields. The more popular snipers get, the more other players stack KE shields. Sometimes, against some players, you NEED a KE shield to win because they snipe so much that without shutting down their sniper strategy you have to fight an uphill battle all match.

Basically:

Anyone who uses a kumorabi in every CQ match is not "meta". But if you know another player ALWAYS uses tanks on this map, then switching to a kumorabi to counter that is meta.

No. Any player with half a brain can avoid kumos if they pay attention. They're a gimmick because they rely purely on other players being distracted so you can rush in, then run away. In a straight up fight they lose against almost every non-tank build.

Kumos have a low barrier of entry compared to their style points for CQ, so they don't require lots of research or intimate knowledge of the game to score big hits with.

They're 15m high, three times the height of a normal or ACV mech, which is about 5m tall. AC1-3 ACs are between 5-7m tall, but scale is all wonky in those games since vehicles end up vastly different sizes mission to mission.

I think the splash is just fucking bad translating by ubisoft. The game means that ARMS FORTS are 1000m tall, which is about right for something like Answerer. Motherwill and Great Wall are both 1000m+ long/across.

I tested the tread pilebunkers on rails thing, turns out that they do come forward when kicking. Coincidentally all the mobile treads (which have like 10k more kick damage than the defense ones) have those piles on the sides, except for Foolish/Funeral.
As you can see in the pic, which if you couldn't tell is my tank from above, the piles will sometimes get stuck in the front position. Not sure how exactly to replicate it, but it happens pretty often.

I'm playing Silent Line, and for the first time in the series, I think the corporations are pulling a fast one on me.

And one question, /acg/. Are arena tiers locked by number of missions done in some of the entries? Usually I only do the Arena after finishing the game (so that was never an issue), but in Silent Line, you get stuck at the top of a tier (can't challenge the tier above) until you complete/fail more missions and receive an e-mail saying you advanced a tier.

I remember you had to advance tiers in MoA to open up missions, but not the other way around. Is this true for any of the other games?

This happens in prior games (bitchfit out of nowhere), but SL takes the cake. There's also a mission where they ask you to take 1 AC down, and when you go into the mission, you have to fight 3, the last 2 at once.
While AC is my favorite mech game series, I recognize there's no progression to speak of - you either get started right in the middle of the fire (first mission of AC2), or you do 5 hard missions in a row, the next one being to destroy some speeders that don't even shoot back at you. I think AC2: AA is the biggest culprit of this, for the sheer ammount of missions, and since there's no arena in the game, every AC you fight during missions has tons more of AP than an arena AC.

(I still defeated Hustler One on my first try, but it was more luck than anything).

The problem with calling Armored Core harder than Dark Souls, is that it's true. Dark Souls is built up to be hard as shit, but the games are actually pretty easy, all things considered. Therefore, when people finish them, they get a false sense of accomplishment, because the games are considered difficult, but still within the realm that any casual can finish them after bashing their head against a wall long enough.

AC, on the other hand, would actually live up to the 'hard-hype'. Even 4th gen, which is the easiest in the series, makes Dark Souls look simple. People who buy into the 'Souls is difficult' nonsense don't actually play for the challenge, but rather the empty bragging rights that they know they can get eventually. Armored Core can, has, and will crush these peoples' spirits, and turn them away.

I wouldn't call NIS or SMT games popular. Certainly nowhere near as niche as AC, but they don't really have any sort of casual fanbase. And Pokemon can be thoroughly enjoyed just by playing surface deep, and never bothering with all of the in-depth stuff.

I swapped out pretty much every single thing in the aaliyah aside for the generator and some of the thrusters.
That blade was nice, but I swapped it for a longer reach one, as the limited range really hampered its performance in my opinion.

I noticed that my current middle weight build can easily stunlock other NEXTs if I manage to land a hit on them with the blade, allowing me to just keep on bashing them till they're dead. A cheap tactic probably, but it works.

I can do just fine while fighting in an open space, but sometimes the game just doesn't want to see you shine. Changing strafe direction mid-boost, small hops are second nature to me. Well, just finished Silent Line. That's it for the old gen of AC games for me. Easiest game was AC3, hardest was AC2. Most annoying was AC2: AA, for sure.

One thing I noticed while playing was that, with each game, I was using missiles less and less, and relying more on rockets or linear weapons. I think the last time I used a missile was back in AC2. I was kinda surprised when I discovered cluster missiles or that big box that shoots a ton of missiles, a la Gundam Dendrobium.

Maybe I didn't really care back in AC1, but even so, the voice acting has gotten worse with each game. Ra... ven...

The game throws you right into the frying pan. Not with that starting mission, but the one right after that (with the flying spheres that spew bullets). They die to a single shot, but that first room was a slap in my face. Dodging was way harder in the PSX games, but there weren't many enemies (save ACs) that shot in controlled bursts. Entering a room with turrets was just another day in the PSX games, but it was a deathtrap in AC2. So I kinda went for AP instead of movement in the PSX games.

AC2:AA had a few missions that were harder (like the fight against 3 ACs at once), but AC2 had the harder missions overall. AC3 was too easy, and SL had a lot of curveballs, but almost every build was viable.
