Yup it's a climate extremity. Either it's too cold or too hot for the crop and it just withers away. This is why it's best to have a heater and a sunlight to ensure the crop is always at optimal temperature and has light.

When you're getting hydroponics set up I recommend nutrient paste until you have a decent amount and a good power set up.

If you ever spot fertilized Ostrich eggs in a traders inventory buy them all.
Ostriches are almost as good as big cats in terms of damage/speed (11.09/1.74/98% damage; 6 move speed) and lay eggs too
Simultaneously a war-beast and a chicken. You cannot lose.

1 steam vent will heat a little more than 1 sunlamp worth of greenhouse in -10C temperatures
if you find 1 sunlamp worth of fertile soil nearby a steam vent to pipe in it should sustain your starting colonists with the addition of hunting until you can get a better setup together
also look for two or more steam vents close together for a larger greenhouse

if your gonna use your lance, lance the grenadier, he has armor to tank a few shots whilst still doing aoe damage to his fellows, and yes, abuse your range, boom rats, grenades, and sniper should all work together to pin them down and make them panic/flee

if they get the upper hand and you dont feel you can safely sit in your perch anymore picking them off, hide back into your town and do urban warfare, ambushing them in hallways from all sides using your melee and low cooldown pistols to your advantage against their long reload charge rifle and lmg

the problem with solar flares is that it shuts down ALL electricity for multiple hours. In the Ice Sheet you might as well reload as your colonists will freeze and all your hydroponic plants will die with nothing you can do about it. I feel that if they made Solar Flares either electricity-powered things work half as well or only electric stuff outside is shut down it would be more balanced

pirated it, i'm having a lot of fun! it's actually quite addicting. i've never played dwarf fortress or anything like this before, closest thing i've played is like space station 13

although I do have the problem that I can never get far. My bases always get made, and I always make it past the first pirate raid that happens a few days in, but it's only a week or so until we run out of sustainable food or wood to make things. And other times, we run out of steel and have to go mining around randomly until people get stressed to the nines. Any tips? I've just restarted every time I get to that point, hopefully the repetition of the start will make me grow more efficient at it

But after her legs and arms come off, she'd get the message.


Your colonists probably were stressed as hell, before. Raids, food issues, Alphabeavers.. But luckily, they've got this nice new pet to empty their worries into.

Doing open isn't a good idea unless you want to gimp yourself on purpose, it makes getting ores after a while annoyingly difficult. If you want a more open spaced map, just choose hills and scale up the size.

First time playing on a boreal map, also doing Randy random.

Holy fuck this is brutal, especially with volcanic winter pushing the temp down to -20C. I made the rooms as spacious as I was used to on other biomes so that the colonists wouldn't bitch about "cramped environment" but it appears that they'll just freeze to death in their wide open spaces ( despite 5 heaters and vents).

Is the only way to play boreal with tiny rooms? Or is it necessary to build next to a geothermal vent right at the beginning?

since you have so much wood and live in a fucking forest, why dont you build a lot of campfires all over the place or build a fueled generator, they cause a good-sized room like your kitchen/dining area to go 80-90 degrees easy, and if you have vents, reduce that number by 5-10 degrees over each room if they are all the same size.

Infestations spawn insect jelly, which is delicious and presumably gives similar bonuses to the lavish meal. If i recall correctly, it also lasts a long time, making it wise to save it specifically for emergencies.

As of alpha 14, hives also spawn these luminescent lamps that don't require fuel or fire, but they break permanently after a while. They also would be best used in an emergency.

Both of these items make the infestation event useful for farming, though it's becoming very difficult. It's also worth noting that insects themselves give bad meat, which gives your colonists a negative debuff even when cooked, since it tastes bad. This is likely because it would be easy to completely farm hives for food, rather than just the lamps and jelly.

If you're having trouble with infestations, they can be countered easily with fire- just have a colonists with some molotovs or an incendiary launcher light some fires, and forbid the door.

Yes and no. They will increase the strength of raids but not as much as a new colonist would. Each colonist is worth roughly 2000 silver so yeah, unless you're pushing out dozens of masterwork statues it won't matter as much as just normal growth.

Also don't let your colonists enter dangerous areas.

In this screenshot you can see two. The trees have a scissor icon that represent being marked for cutting down. The butcher workbench which is just off screen has a "bill" that is set to always butcher dead creatures if there are any.

The only thing for A14 is http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=728318507&searchtext= QSP Mod. It really doesn't help you since it's still on the floor but is now up to 8 items per tile instead of 1.

However there were many mods for A12 and A13 that greatly expanded the vanilla equipment racks (from refrigerated serving trays to pallets that let you stack raw resources).

There are no proper containers that hide the item and open some kind of list for you to view but there are furniture objects that allow for denser stacking and look prettier - with mods. That aren't updated yet. Except for QSP.

There are scenarios where the planet has variable season conditions where you can have hot summers and temperate winters in year 1, then cool summers and freezing winters in year 2. I don't know of any with temperature extremes like that.

You can however just embark on a northern temperate forest/plain/boreal location which will net you anywhere from 15-25 C summers and below freezing winters.

Pro tips: BATTERIES

- Store batteries in a stone wall area. Make sure there is no empty space around them because when one short circuits you don't want there to be fire around it or it becomes an oven for people to fry inside and you lose the rest of your batteries too.

- Have a switch between your batteries and your main network if you have solar energy or wind because they are unreliable. This way you can keep your charged batteries on "hold" for when shit hits the fan and you can switch ON your backup energy.

- Have multiple backup battery clusters. If one short circuits it means the second backup won't eject its' juicy electricity. So if one battery cluster dies out you have a backup. Don't blame random events for simply not being prepared!

Anyway, I think I kind of fucked myself. I accidentally took 175 Plasteel knives instead of the 5 I meant to take, so my wealth is a lot higher than it should be. My third raid was enough pirates to outnumber me, armed with charge rifles. Thankfully I've got a kill corridor lined with deadfall traps and stone chunks, so I can deal, and every charge rifle they drop makes me stronger.

What a fucking day...

So immediately after the Manhunting Wargs decide to leave, 3 raiders come in to attack. A grenadier, a pistoleer, and a stabby guy.

The fucking wrecked us. Killed off my lone starter after getting downed by a knife to gut and then blown apart by a grenade as another colonist was downed by same grenade.
Another was shot unconcious.

The Raiders kidnapped the two downed members, and as they ran, my Main's wife bravely chases after them, managing to shoot one dead and the other down. Unfortunately the third got away with my Miner.

Now comes the hard part... I don't think I'll be able to save both the raider and my colonist.

But the raider has better stats...
For the better of the colony?

Turns out, it was a mistake.

After attempting to tend to both of them and their wounds, the prisoner went berserk, downing my only standing colonist.

He manages to kill the berserked Raider before she got too close to attack. Thankfully the main entrance to the base was made of granite, taking longer to break down than wood.

Things still look pretty grim though. Both survivors have extreme mood problems, Masi has an extreme lung infection, no medicine, and food is scarce.

Architect > Zone/Area > Expand allowed area

If you don't have an area just for your puppers, like a "doggy pen" or a "kennel" then go:

Restrict > Manage areas... > New animal area

Make one just for your puppers. Then go:

Animals > Click all puppers into your new area.

They will never leave that area, even to eat, so make sure there's food around where they are allowed to be. For example I have a zone just for my muffalos and it's outside in the grassy areas inside a pen. Grass isn't enough so sometimes I plant huge fields of hay they can eat even not fully grown. They eat anything not fully grown though. Sometimes I grow hay away from them, stockpile it and put giant hay bales outside since they stack up to 200 and this lasts quite long. Muffalos are a fun source of milk and wool when kept alive and they breed too. Watch out for vomit if your puppers are pregnant.

Lucky's Hideout; Part 2
>Last time; Lucky started his base, saved Blue who helped him set it up, Blue got murdered by raiders, the power supply got burned down, dog injured, Lucky injured, no one alive to help him and a metric ton of other bad shit happened to our not so lucky survivor like solar flares, psychic drone attacks and blight.

The last surviving raider who killed Blue got eaten alive by an Arctic Wolf after Lucky left her to die outside.

The first crop came in and Lucky made a fridge to store the food in, and now has an ample supply to survive by himself for a long time.

A new colonist came under attack by raiders and asked Lucky for assistance, Lucky helped. Unfortunately the new colonist; Ingrid, is not nearly as good as Blue was being only able to research, art and hunt. None of which she is useful at. Lucky is still broken up about Blues death and is not doing well mentally, he spends most of the day by her grave and has to be forced away to continue work on his hideout.

A rare Thrumbos came into the area and Ingrid and Lucky were able to kill it though, which should be good to sell its rare horn. Unfortunately Lucky's dog was killed by the Thrumbo, which has not helped Lucky's mental stability at all.

And now everything has gotten even worse. A new pack of man eating boars has arrived double in size of the last pack. Once again Lucky has been forced to stay inside his base and wait them out...

...Except an escape pod has just crash landed on the planet; and its Lucky's mother.

Making blocks isn"t slow at all, just have a dedicated crafter with a good enough skill and you'll drown in marble in no time.
If you worry about time/quantity just keep large project away from you and build progressively
