Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

/domg/ I think I broke the game somehow. Last battle I watched I was able to pull the camera back much farther than usual and then I was able to pan upwards indefinitely. I have screenshots that are entirely fog and skybox.

An Ashen angel is a fairly decent assassin, and it's 50% PER COMMANDER in targetted province so aiming it an army is fairly safe.
Also a D5 can generally kill them no sweat due to dust2dust and/or witherbones.

What's the best way to lose with MA Man?

I know standard strat is to more or less rush Mother Oak and spam vine ogres + longbows + projectile buffs.
A pretender with fire scales is probably far better for the flame arrows but I do like to meme the wardens, death weapon warbows on a quickened mother with water path is relatively ok but probably costs too much on gems
Am I missing anything? Nation is pretty mediocre.

Tries to drag some of the shittier nations up to being viable and nerfs some of the blatantly too strong shit in others. It's still being worked on but it's doing very good things for Dominions. Ideally we'll eventually reach a point where any nation can have a chance at winning a decent sized game. There are still natural imbalances between nations of course, the aim isn't to bulldoze everything down to a boring flat plateau.

Summod has good goals for balance and is competently reaching them a few at a time.

Worthy heroes has inertia but has more and more minor grumbles about what it's doing. However due to it being mostly harmless and kinda cool flavour wise it's still prevalent.

ItemUnits is nearly done for MA just needs Amuys to finish sailor training and then have some balance checks.

That is, you take higher nature on your pretender, because you can site search with N1 indies. You take higher air and astral on your pretender, because you can site search with your A/S random smiths. Your pretender lets you actually use those air and astral gems for things other than crystal matrices and quills, but they don't need to trudge through every province to do that. I want my pretender to actually be making things or at the very least researching for those 20 turns, rather than doing nothing but building up my gem income a bit higher.

I think the idea is that, with Ulm at least, your troops and mages are good enough that you can afford to delay your god actually doing anything until then. As long as your national stuff is good enough to let you keep pace with other nations, your god steps in only at that point (turn 40ish seems about right) and then starts helping your nation do other things.

I'm not actually an expert or anything, though, that's just sorta been my understanding for what the rainbow on Ulm actually does.

You can research like mad with Monks and Wise Men, the issue being that you have no paths to cast anything. Your lategame is shit, so you better start warring ASAP and snowball into a throne rush. Man can be pretty brutal in early wars, but the longer you wait the shittier things will get for you.

I go for a dormant Monolith with 5 nature, 2 death, some astral and earth. It can cast mother oak or telefrag on unprepared midgame armies with Soul Vortex(use extra D gems). A single skelespammer might kill it though, use wisely.

In a vacuum? No. I think that androleths could cost anywhere from 30 to 75 gold without significantly changing how they're used, since their recruitment is limited by resources and the fact that you only buy them when you want mindblasters rather than purely mages and chaff (R'lyeh has no trouble spending all of its gold, after all).

In that relatively common situation, you're giving R'lyeh another 10 gold / androleth. Reducing androleth's price would do essentially the same thing as reducing R'lyeh's mage costs; it's just saying "R'lyeh has more gold to work with now." In the context of all of the other changes made to them, I don't know if it's a buff they need.

Maybe it is, but I don't agree with making that change unless you already saw that they needed it after seeing them with easier air-breathing access on their fish, semi-amphibious polypal spawn, and the new units that they got in the vanilla update, offset by the fact that it's easier for landnations to go underwater, etc etc.

Basically, R'lyeh has already been drastically changed in how they play, almost all of which has been for the better. When you don't know how strong they really are now, you shouldn't be putting in gold cost tweaks on units when the changes don't actually affect when they'll be used.

The problem is that the change is very hard to feel because of the fact that it doesn't change how androdai are used and because there are so many factors that affect how the games go. They won't suddenly be OP with the price change, and they also won't be noticeably weaker without it. I like the idea of tweaking things to make nations slightly better or worse, but you shouldn't be making those number tweaks in the wake of larger changes until you've seen how they pan out.

Thank you for your concern, but this isn't a recent change, and sure as shit didn't follow the other ea ryleh buffs I implemented.

It was one of the first changes I made to EA Rlyeh, and I made it, along with other changes, in version 0.4, about 4+ months ago. It accompanied the MA Ermor and EA Therodos changes.

It's now been in the game for 4+ months, and I've just recently added the semi-amphibious polypal spawn, since it's clear ryleh still has a "getting on land" and "using spawn for literally anything" problem.

Well, let us entertain the thought for the sake of bumping this thread if nothing else. First of all, for it to be there this turn, as in actually be there and not have a move order targeted there then it must be stealthed. If that is the case, then it doesn't matter to the battle which will occur. If it has a move order there and isn't stealthed or if it's there and unstealths, then it risks running into the dragon itself in which case, all the more power to him, mate.

Aside from all of that, I really don't see why anyone else would bother. Mictlan is my neighbor and there's a history of him dying to Xib on this map, so I can see why he would do what he did. Why would anyone else create a pretender specifically for killing me and thus gimp themselves in the long run, when they know that I am a scrub with no scales and with a nerfed Xib (summod)? It just doesn't make any logical sense. This other person wielding your hypothetical pretender would have to have an irrational hate towards me to care enough to do all that.

Theyre bats with 9 str and a good weapon but their hp is very low.

Lets take this blue dragon shall we. It has 2 attacks with 15 att that instantly kill whatever they hit, one aoe1 attack with 15 att that clears a square of bats and one 4 aoe frost attack that also should clear the squares it hits. And the dragon gets the first attack now since its sieging so turn one, pre bless, it could clear 5 squares of bat sacreds.

Then the bats can retaliate, blessed. Their attack is around 17 dmg vs 18 dragon prot so it barely does anything even with B9. F9 wont help much either because of 18 prot of the dragon. If the dragon also has awe the number of attacks hitting is also low due to low bat morale.

Odds arent in favor really. And non sacred bats are obviously awful.

Let's do away with this forum defense meme. Their worst troops, at 7 gold and 1 resource, do die in one hit with no protection and 7 hp - but they've got 11 defense, 11 attack, and a length 4 weapon. Plus above-average MR of 11 and morale of 9, which is bad but not awful.

Let's compare that to Bandar Log's Makarta. 2 less gold, 5 resource 1 gold, and for that we get a unit with a 1 length weapon, 2 less points of strength, size one, four less points of magic resistance, one less point of attack, two less points of morale, two less points of HP and three more points of defense. While the Xibalban can reliably kill something with their piercing weapon doing around 11 damage, the Makarta can't kill anything ever with a blunt weapon doing 7.

Or we could compare it to Machaka's pygmy, priced at the same as the Makarta (two less resources than the Zotz). Four hitpoints, MR 10, morale 6, strength 5, attack/defense 7/7, and precision 10 with an 8 ammunition range 20 6 damage bow.

Compared to things of similar price, their worst troops are much, much better.

You're overestimating the breath and attacks a bit.

For the breath and melee attacks the bats only need to roll a couple points higher on the damage check to live through them (unless the 10% chance of head hit occurs).

For the tail sweep, it's 20 damage against 16 protection. Xibalban sacreds should have a good chance of surviving two.

I still think the dragon would win the fight overall (Xibalba won't have many sacreds yet), but the majority of his sacreds should live through the first round.

Pretty sure the OP used to include a bit about easy starting nations. Some are:

Ermor - they're Rome. Everyone has javelins and a big shield with a sword. Just by producing big stacks of infantry you can beat an AI in a 1v1 game and get some confidence with the basic mechanics. That's the idea behind playing the AI.

Tir Na Nog - Irish elves who can cheese enemy armies to death by being ethereal (ghost-like in form making them very hard to harm).

>Middle Age
Ulm - burly stupid German men who dislike magic and put all of their faith in superior metal-forging.

Marignon - Inquisitorial state that has hardy infantry, spammable crossbows and lots of fun and easy to use fire magic.

>Late Age
Man - Their crossbow + sword&shield wielding heavy infantry is strong as hell and that's all you should need to beat the AI. Their magic game is kind of weak but could get you to start thinking creatively.

Also most giant factions aren't too hard.

they are meh in a big battle.and xibalba got almost only that for early game, having no other choice( but their meh sacreds) is a strategical weakness that should be considered when you compare bats to, let's say, monkeys. their true early-mid strenght relies on logistic(stealthy map move 3 flying raids) and forcing the enemy to put all his mages/commander inside his blobs. with mass strenght and prot buffs they got a chance to shine again lategame until the enemy discovers "Storm" and half of xibalba power is gone.

It's not particularly complex per say, it just has a huge burden of knowledge thanks to all the shit in it.

Game has turns solved simultaneously(not one player after another) and you don't actually control your units, you just give them orders how to fight in a particular way, and after the turn ends you get to see how the fight went down.

Pirate the game to try it, play Early Age, read the description of the nations and pick one that sounds cool thematically to you and play it.
Oh right you might also want to read the beginning tutorial from the manual. (The whole thing is huge, just read the part where it demonstrates how a game goes down.) You'll definitely want to have stuff like Pretender, Prophet, Scouts explained before starting.

a) Duobless really doesn't have trouble with heavy cav and scales build does
b) Duobless can easily rush someone
c) Duobless naturally gets lots of elves, since it builds them for expansion and doesn't lose them, which makes raiding easier
d) Big caster lategame

Scales -
a) holy shit I can't build forts fast enough wtf is this gold
b) awake snake can take water provinces
c) +1 magic instead of drain to make research better (not that big of a deal, since your mages are 13 RP)

I think you should be focusing on making artifacts impressive rather than cheap. Unlike generic items, you're limited to one so artifacts need to really stand out in order for them to be worth researching. Many of the noncombat artifacts already do so (boosters especially), but it'd be nice to see the combat gear raised to a similar level.

Most of your changes to SC gear don't move the artifact in question into a position where I'd go out of my way to acquire it. I do like the changes to barrier, though.

Mage Bane might be a little too cheap now. Instant sleep, no save, on anything hit is quite strong and it has great MR and stats on top of that.

putting up battlefield wide buffs items push the item away from thug/SC's hands and relegate it to a scout in the bottom right corner.
most SC/thugs care about gem efficiency because against the right mages they die regardless ( and their problems can be usually solved with spending more gems into generic items).I can't stuff all resistence,luck and 7 MR onto every artifact( and it still wouldn't help that much).

I guess i could try to make weapon artifacts better for fighting alongside your army ( generic immunities, can kill several squares of enemies at once) or being an Anti-SC.
basically i will abuse autospells on weapons.

I asked Llama if it created an error message of some point when the game was deleted so that I can know if I need to change anything on our end, and he might even be able to restore it. Hexawyr is built for up to 2 sea nations and 11-15 land nations. If there's 0-1 sea nations, amphibious land nations have a decent edge assuming they can hold onto the water they take, and if there's 3 sea nations the starts get a bit crowded.

They took an incidental nerf, given that their mystics were all RoS casters and now only the E random guys are (so no more trapezing RoS... RIP), but the quickness buff would be nice if they somehow got units worth buffing. Maybe... clockwork horrors with SoG + quickness could be a thing? IDK, I'll have to try it.

it's likely that even lategame there will be 3 or more powers that want to win and even if the lesser ones agree to gift each other thrones to make someone else win ( which would be quite childish) the amount of coordination and time required would leave plenty of opportunity for the big player to snap in and steal the last thrones needed for him to win.

What economy? You don't have an economy. Inevitably your strategy comes down to 'rush the nearest person' because you will only get weaker as the game goes on, and even if successful you will end up with a huge empire that is roughly equivalent to everybody else's small one, just easier to raid and generally more shit.

With a tribless you're already taking pretty much every negative scale possible. Quadbless is a meme strategy that can't actually win anything at all.

Dualbless is more realistic. A lot of nations can take a dualbless and do very well.

UW non-sacred cav have two attacks on land.
N2 needs to be empowered to ASAP on a land druid, to allow for both low nature boosters and Vine sheilds.
Princesses make good heavy thugs, use them.
Land troops are decent quality, land mage communions can be back up by high A casting from Queens.

Yes.

I'd say that their expansion strategy should be similar to Thed's - aim for coasts, fort coasts early, and build up a coastal empire. Ys actually can have some trouble with strong UW provinces (shark/amber tribe/triton knights), but their sacreds annihilate indies on land with or without a bless. If you take something like an awake wyrm, it's actually better to have your pretender expand UW while your sacreds expand on land.

I haven't played them in a real game, so I only know expansion strategy for sure. I'd probably look to using my kernou mages and units to push inland and fight for thrones and riches there, and rely on earth magic and GfH supporting by battlefield spells from A. Sacreds will form the spearpoint of your earlygame armies and transition to flankers and raiders once magic becomes king. The fact that they have an AoE attack means that they should stay killy for a very long time.

If you need to get into a UW war, I imagine that your best bet would be rushing conj and throwing out water elementals like, well, literally every other UW nation, but you shouldn't expect to win that war at all if your opponents are competent.

If they weren't cap only StR I'd agree. But they are, so they compete with your morgen sorceresses. I wouldn't recruit very many of them at all. Given that you have trouble getting a significant number of them, I'd definitely consider the research required to use them as thugs effectively to be lower value than it is for vanheim or eriu. If you're not going to have them get access to self buffs or items, then whatever you're using them for could be accomplished by your sacreds instead.

The sacreds don't even need W9 unless you want to use them to rush another player in the first year. If you do, then W9 is great. If you're not planning to rush anyone, W9 isn't that impressive since it doesn't particularly soup up your expansion the way it can on Vanheim or other elite sacred nations.

For on land expansion I use one Princess and as many sacreds as resources/gold allow per princess, which generally end up as lossless expansion and beat most other expansion parties. Those commanders are then used midgame as heavy thugs, with more recruited when I can't afford sorceress.
