I still don't quite understand how the sky city even existed. Not in a scientific standpoint, but in a "Literally nobody knew about it" sense.

People did know about it in the alternate universe. Comstock got support from the US government to construct Columbia with it sent across the world as a symbol of American ideals. It then split from the US after intervening in the Boxer Rebellion.
