The most you can make otherwise are conjectures based on personality traits and similar backgrounds.

Kind of like that, you want to find similar traits and personalities because generally speaking those work out the best. Stuff like Ino/Naruto needs something to hold them together. For a shounen and with an author that actively hates the very idea of romantic shit, NH gets plenty of interactions and stuff that lends itself easier to a romantic interpretation than most other stuff (besides Shikamaru and Temari all but plainly stating their stuff).

Not him, but I would argue it does. Anon's pic explains very nicely how they are not drastic opposites as such, but different sides of the same coin, similar people in somewhat similar, yet also different situations. Each interaction, the little we get, is one where they learn and give something to each other, it's a relationship of positive reinforcement on both ends.
They have both done things for the other that changed the direction of each other's lives, and besides Shikamaru, Hinata easily has some of the strongest presence and biggest impact on Naruto among the rookies/arguably the whole secondary cast (depends on your grading).

The key thing to note here is Kishimoto's MO was clearly "if it's not Uchiha wanking, it is a distraction", but of what role she is in she does a splendid job, and what there is shows a pretty deep, if largely unsaid relationship between Naruto and Hinata.

I agree that similar is good, but people can't be too similar. Case in point: my dad dated a woman who was almost exactly like him for over a decade and was engaged to her, and they regularly beat the shit out of each other and they both cheated. It was actually awful.

I do think part of the semi-disagreements around must be simple over-exposure of one group to too much and too badly written stuff, while other look at the same thing with much fresher eyes.

I don't think anyone here pretends that if you automatically include Hinata/NH it will be good. I personally haven't read that many fics at all, and am fairly picky about what I read, so I am by no means burned out or even really jaded to the possibilities, but I found myself rejecting a lot of the stuff even on the recommended list.

Take for instance the one that has Gai somehow create a team of Lee, Hinata and Naruto. On paper it should be something right up my alley, but fuck me sideways, it is one of the most awkwardly written pieces of shit I've read. It struggles to establish itself at all and barely navigates the excuses for its own existence, and the writing style in and of itself is plain bad, so I dropped it after a chapter or two.
Would you have gone further with them, to ultimately getting fed up?

I've gone very, very far. Extremely far. On one hand it's yielded some decent stuff, but on the other it's probably screwed me over since I've pretty much washed my hands of the pairing.

So, yes, I did go further with them. I have a pretty high tolerance for poorly written stuff because sometimes it fulfills some wish of mine or an itch I need scratched. But then, after binging on it for so long I've become a bit jaded and tired of the whole thing.

I'm hoping for BorutoxMitsuki, BorutoxShikadai (which would just be a poor man's NarutoxShikamaru), InojinxShikadai, or MitsukixShikadai. Only one that could conceivably happen is BorutoxMistuki, possibly BorutoxShikadai seeing as they missed the NarutoxShikamaru goldmine, either of which might redeem Boruto's character.

Oh, Echoes is interesting. Features alternate dimensions with different versions of Naruto. The dude loves exploring cliches and there's lots of character development. Atlas is a fun one by the same guy that has a Naruto with no chakra but still kicks ass (think Batman).

I remember Patriot's Dawn being good but it updates sporadically.

Better Left Unsaid is kinda funny, the dude knows how to make Naruto a smart ass.

Devil's Advocate and The Cost of Living feature Naruto being taught/raised by Zetsu (non-canon variant) and Kakuzu, respectively.

A Drop of Poison is... Interesting. I can't explain much of it, but Naruto gets sent back to the academy a third time, only he uses the shadow clone technique with the help of Iruka to build a clone network that does different things.

I kinda liked A Price for Peace as well (by freowin) since it tries to expand on what's beyond the Iwa mountains (it's been a while don't quote me on this).

Huh. That actually sort of brings out something I've been finding pretty interesting, on what draws people to a fic.
The latter one you mentioned I would probably very much dislike, solely on the fact that it makes too big a change, presumably off the bat, to the character, whereas a more 'classic' one like Team 8 starts them off at the canon state and has shit happen differently and thus characters evolve in a different direction.

I suppose if you have read stuff with characters consistent of their canon selves, even if they change over time, it would at some point become tiresome and colour stuff badly throughout the whole fic, but really to me at that point they might as well just be complete OCs acting in the Nardo world.
Or just going off the Nardo world altogether and reading some proper, original literature.

Well, the Naruto world is still great. Say what you want about Kishimoto, but he did a damn good job setting everything up.

The thing with modifying character personalities is that a lot of them already have a certain look, voice, and backstory. It's easier to imagine them, you just tweak how they act. At least that's how I see it. Most OCs are fucking horrible. The only ones I've seen who're decent is in ANBU of Konohagure, where ANBU!Naruto gets an ANBU team and they all have their little quirks and abilities.

I keep hearing this, and I don't know how much of this is from fanon and filler, but the world is rather barren by my measure. Sure, it's not completely undeveloped, but there's nothing on the cultures involved, nothing on the feudal system with weird tech stuff and magic ninja all over the place, hell, we don't even know if people like Lee who don't have chakra are a rare exception and peasants simply don't train their chakra, or if we have a world mostly composed of muggles or any other possibilities.

It's all incredibly vague, at least to me. You don't really even have to go to the Tolkien level to get a good contrast to a well-developed world, or less 'professional' but still expansive stuff like TES to compare Nardo's world to one that is well set up.

It starts off in the Wave Arc well enough, which provides most of the info on the world - that is to say world building is something functionally done and gotten out of the way, not something with any passion behind it, from where I am standing.
Granted, what little we do see is nice enough, but it's like the early chapters of a fledgling story. I'd compare it to the early chapters of The Witcher Saga, unsure as fuck on what to make of the world yet. The difference is, as the books went on that world saw a fair, if NOT excellent amount of world building, which Naruto fails to really measure up to.

So this has me questioning, exactly what world building did Kishi do a GOOD job with? Not just telling key info, still he'd have to put in there, but something of worth on its own right?

Special mention to Better Left Unsaid (haven't finished due to length, but ended ended up reading more chapters, total, than I have of any other fic) and A Girl from Whirlpool (great stuff up until the end of the 2nd War). Biggest surprise in terms of quality was Lives Worth Saving, which I went into only due to it being at the top of the list, after I sorted every story by the amount of favorites; thought I'd hate it, only to end up marathoning the fic. Similarly, went into Myoushuu no Fuuin with no interest in its concept, only to be surprised by the quality of its execution. World's Greatest Chunnin Exam executes the Naruto-Hinata pairing far better than it's done canonically in The Last. From the Ashes misses a major opportunity way down the line, but given that it ended soon after, it wasn't allowed to detract from the story, though its lack of completion is a problem unto itself. Favorite has been Team 8.

Not really. Instead of Lee not knowing ninjutsu he could just be really shit at everything apart fron P.E. The different teams could just be a group of friends who happened to be split equal into 4 separate classes. Shikamaru is the waster who's extremely good at maths and memorising things, Naruto's the gypsy kid who the kids bully, Sasuke is hopefully not even present. Neji's the grade A student who always puts in effort and is admired by all. Hinata's the underachiever who's just not that bright but not at all stupid and is under a lot of stress because her father's disappointed in her grades. The rest are just normal characters with differing personalities.

The story behind Hajime no Ippo's Miyata is basically Lee's, in that he possessed little in the way of natural strength, but wanted to prove that he could become a competent boxer through technique (taijutsu) alone. Give him that. Making Lee bad in academics just makes Lee look like a retard, much like every battle shounen MC.

Nah, this is fanon. Lee just sucked at ninjutsu and genjutsu and he wasn't a taijutsu virtuoso either. The only thing he was good at was working hard. Lee can use basic chakra techniques like water walking and treeclimbing, but beyond that he's no good at it.

Itachi is a Mary Sue because everyone - EVERYONE - who talks about him calls him the best ever. Kakashi introduces him as a super genius who made ANBU captain at 13. Deidara is awed by him in their first encounter and dedicates his life to defeating him. Hiruzen says he had the wisdom of the Hokage at age 7 (and was so wise he couldn't figure out a way to get Sasuke to come after him aside from mentally raping him?). Hashirama says Itachi was an even better shinobi than he, the "god of shinobi" and founder of the entire hidden village system. Sasuke calls him the true Hokage and that's the only one that's remotely believable because of how much Itachi actually went through as perceived by Sasuke. This is on top of him winning every fight with ease and generally being an unstoppable force.

Hinata is not like this. You are conflating shyness and demureness. Hinata is demure, but she's shy to the point of having a stutter, which, no matter how much you want to believe it, is not a valued wife trait. If you are positing that being shy makes her a mary sue than Hinata cannot be one because her entire character arc is centered around not being shy anymore.
