Space edition

>Can the game be considered a full release?
No, for all intents and purposes, KSP should be considered still in early access state. The game is nowhere near being able to stand on its own legs both from a gameplay perspective (career mode is definitely not ready and balanced) and a stability perspective. There are still major bugs and memory leaks that shouldn't exist on a finished game.

>Are there big issues with the game?
Bugs and instability are still real and frequent problems, as with every product still in beta. Ask in thread for details.

>What are the devs doing?
The most recent update (1.1) was supposedly going to bring a complete overhaul of the GUI, be 64bit friendly, have a refined physics/heating/aero model and generally perform better. While achieving none of these goals, the game is now more unstable than ever, with many users being unable to use the game at all. An external team with heavily questionable experience (Flying Tiger Entertainment) is being tasked with porting the game to PS4, XboxOne and Wii U, with a release deadline that seems to keep slipping.

>Should I buy the game?
KSP is very enjoyable at first, then it usually needs to be modded to retain some sort of longevity, but doing so may dramatically increase the instability of the game. You will be very familiar with the word "Oops!". The Developers, Squad, have shown many times that they can't handle the project and are trying to squeeze all the money they can with the least amount of effort and with controversial PR tactics. The general consensus at /kspg/ is that you should torrent the game, not because the game itself is unplayable, but because most of us agree that Squad does not deserve your money.

Disappointing solar panel clipping. There should be a tool that lets you test panel rotation clipping during design time.

What I usually do is extend them in VAB then use the rotation offset tool to spin them. It's not perfect for all the panels but usually gives a decent idea.

There is Automated Science Sampler or something like that.

Not quite. The lack of seasonal climate function would result in an entirely different biosphere, and would also result in both far more geometrically perfect poles (think Jupiter's polar hexagons,) as well as reducing the chances of glacial geological formations to almost zero.

In reality, it's because their physics code is trash, and their map of Kerbin is ripped in entirety from a map generation tutorial.

Bill, Bob and Jeb have been waiting years to be rescued after their space-station was destroyed in a collision with a crew-transfer craft caused by timewarp.

If I remember right, the parachute failed when returning some of the other crew to earth first and I decided that until a perfectly safe method of returning them could be devised they could just wait in orbit with what was left of the station.

Such a safe method is still pending development.

While you're right about Yuri distracting from ongoing events in the past, the current situation is not analogous.

Despite the console release being abysmal and underscoring many flaws with the game's development, there's no real moment for us to seize and not a significant amount we can do. Honestly, if the game-playing public are willing to accept
>1:1 Stick to Mouse controls
Just because we didn't tell them about the embezzlement of 11 billion pounds and trickery to ensure the continued flow of Mexican oil to Sweden then more power to them. By which I mean "They'll all have broken hands and have to live off SSI anyway."

Crucifixion is too good for him.

I fucking hate cringing little lickspittles who'll defend anything companies do despite having no investment in the company of their own.

The only logical justification I can think of for that (And assuming they're behaving logically is a huge leap) kind of behaviour is the deluded belief that they will one day run a company of their own, combined with foreknowledge and planning to fuck the customer instead of providing a good product. In other words, egotism mixed with unrepentant dickishness. And in that light, I would reiterate that crucifixion would be a merciful punishment.

http://kerbaldevteam.tumblr.com/post/147667140904/devnote-tuesday-we-couldnt-think-of-a-title-this

You can tell because the person who pasted it here was too lazy to turn the poem into quotes.

Oh Andrea Cataño!! So silly!!
>>
>Hello everyone!
>Last week was all hands on deck with the release of Kerbal Space Program on consoles! We’ve released on XBox One in many places around the world, and on PlayStation 4 in America. We’re happy with the first reviews and player response,
You mean the let’s plays and paid-for reviews you bought with the money we invested in the development of a PC version? Glad those turned out well for you!

>which is giving us a boost as we’re working on the European PS4 release.
Did you forget about it?

>No release date yet, but solid progress is being made every day.
So you did!

>Managing such a large release is quite a task for us,
I bet!

>although our team has grown over the years
Has it? I kind of remember all the founders jumping ship last month

>we very much consider ourselves a small studio still.
Okay, so what you’re saying is marketers can’t release a console game. Makes sense.

>The development team has been diversifying their tasks. Mike (Mu), Bob (RoverDude) and Nathanael (NathanKell) are still very much pre-occupied with rewriting a lot of the game’s code to optimise and cache parts of the game and removing deprecated code, but now that the game is feeling a lot slicker already the rest of the team has started to look at other work that we want done for update 1.2.
So what you’re saying is optimization is a thing of the past…
>>
>The main focus of rewriting and refactoring the game this week has been all the various PartModules and also the CrewManifest system. PartModules take advantage of caching where possible and have lower garbage hits, and CrewManifest was completely rewritten to lower garbage creation and avoid loops. These changes will aid performance both in flight and in the editors. Nathanael also took a good look at the PartResource definitions, which he rewrote into a dictionary. Each PartResource is no longer a monobehaviour, considerably reducing overhead. Two simple combined-collection classes were also written.
lotta buzzwords, none of which will solve the years long issues we’ve given up on having solved.

>DictionaryValueList is a dictionary where the values are also kept in a list; it has O(1) lookup and add but O(n) removal. It’s used in cases where one needs both fast lookups and to iterate over the set. ListDictionary is the other: instead of a simple key->value mapping it maps a key to a list of values. After about the fourth time of writing that by hand we made a generic class for it.
Great job. Sounds like months of work. Years, even.

>Jim (Romfarer) has started investigating ways to refactor the code that handles fuel flow. Rewriting hasn’t started yet because there is a large amount of components affected by this code and it is uncertain which solution we will put into the game. Overall the goal is to speed up the fuel flow calculations in the backend and create a framework where it is possible to draw visuals showing where the fuel flows.
It makes a lot of sense to optimize this all after the console releases and 1.0 and beta and the three years you guys were “Developing” this game. I also imagine the word “optimize” is being treated… liberally... here.
>>
>On almost exactly the other side of the world Bill (taniwha) has been plugging away at the algorithm intended to use in replacement of KSP’s current intercept code. The basic idea relies on the fact that the tangents at the two points where the curves are locally closest or furthest are both perpendicular to the line connecting the two points, otherwise the angle between the tangent and the line connecting the two points gives the direction of where the curves are at their closest or furthest (locally).
But I was planning on using the seizure inducing intercepts to kill a small child. Please hold this feature until 1.3 (i.e. never)

>Having someone on the team with a deep understanding of Math like Bill has definitely helps us out here!

>Crossing yet another ocean we find Brian (Arsonide) working on the wheels.
What a new and refreshing topic. You guys have spent a year on this

>The version of Vehicle Physics Pro we were using was out of date,
What’s this?

>and was designed around Unity as it was many versions ago,
Oh?

>back in May of last year.
Of course it was.

>Upgrading that will help make wheels much more stable than they have been.
Fool me once, shame on you.

>This week we managed to get the new version of VPP compiled and in-game in Unity 5.4, and Brian also took the opportunity to rip out most of the workarounds we had in place for wheel issues present in earlier versions of Unity.
Great, so, a year’s worth of devnotes, down the toilet. Oh wait, that’s where they’ve always lived

>Basically that means that wheel “blocking” no longer exists, among other things, which should bring joy to many players no doubt. There is still a good deal of work to be done with the upgrade, but things are looking good with wheels.

>>
>Those of you who follow our forums (or bug tracker) closely will have also noticed that we’ve started our big bug clean-up there this week: the goal is to blow away some of the dust bunnies hiding in there and gather up the important stuff so it can be front and centre for the developers planning on what to tackle in each development cycle.

>Dave (TriggerAu), Steve (Squelch) and Mathew (sal_vager) have received backup in the person of Nathan (Claw). Together they’ve started the truly gargantuan tasks of going through all of our bug tracker projects. They are not alone though, as we’ve enlisted the help of our community to make this project manageable.
Have you now? What a unique and novel strategy. You geniuses must have come up with that on your own.

>The first results are very good, a few bugs were fixed already, and on behalf of everyone working on this project we need to give a huge thank you (with a cherry on top) to our community. If you want to learn how you can help out, read the topic on our forums!
Does the cherry come in the form of a complete and playable game at some juncture in the future?

>On the community and PR fronts Pablo (Paul Amsterdam) and Rodrigo (Roy) are working on assets for the console releases, as well as getting our build servers ready. Kasper (KasperVld) will be flying to Mexico at the end of the week to meet the new people on our team, as well as help organise a few things. Expect the devnotes to come from Mexico rather than the Netherlands next week and the week after!
Don’t forget KasperVld sold out the entire fanbase for a payoff of the PC development investments, and he will be joining the tequila chuggers to take his rightful place as an official investment embezzler soon

>>
>>149067714
Naysayers aren't my problem. If anything it's the yaysayers that bother me.

It's always painfully canned and artificial. Real discussion rarely blossoms. If I had to make an analogy, the inevitable end-state of a "Comfy" /kspg/ as some attempt to force would be a general constructed entirely of pointless small talk, as opposed to actual discussion and conversation, however off topic that may be.

Small talk is a big problem.

The problem is that we're all inundated with stuff. There's nothing to say, and trying to force conversation doesn't work because you can tell when it isn't genuine.

I mean let's just take posting screenshots. At best they're usually mildly interesting. But there are millions of them out there, and eventually everyone has run out of things of substance to say. So all you'll ever get is "Oh, that's a nice rocket" or "Cool" or so on. Well yes, it is a nice rocket. But that's it. There's nowhere for us to go from here. Even if you made me explain every step of the thing, it would be tedious and boring for both of us. It's not going anywhere.

KSP has been mined for all it's worth. I think a good example of this is the Kerbin Geographical Society thread. When you start off, it's great. You can speculate on all the anomalies of Kerbin's terrain. But slowly and surely you're pushed to the peripheries, making observations of less and less interesting things. The cool crater has already been done. Everyone knows.

This isn't just a /kspg/ problem. This is an internet problem. It's everywhere, and content-aggregation sites like Reddit just make it worse. Is it any surprise one of the defining phrases of our time is "Oh yeah, that was a thing"? That's all it is. That's all anything is now. A nebulous "Thing" that we pay attention to for a few minutes, then throw away. Everything is disposable. This gets worse and worse the more effort is needed to actually create a given thing. No wonder streaming is so popular: Like a let's play, you can rely on the game to draw people in, but unlike a let's play you don't have to put any effort into editing. Low effort attention for anyone with OBS.

We don't just have a poor signal-to-noise ratio. We have turned signal into noise.

I'm not trying to make anyone stop posting anything, i.e. the point of this is bemoaning that there's no reason for me to post screenshots as opposed to complaining others are doing so.

There is a traffic manager mod with improved AI out there, where traffic will move to open lanes if possible.

But your layout is just shit. A lot of cars need to turn right at those two junctions. I would just delete that middle bridge since no one seems to be using the other two bridges. Probably expand the road running on the left shore as well, because it will start to see a lot more traffic.

Lego(e)s is just as correct as "Lego"

The official word is that one says "Lego bricks" or "Lego sets", not "Lego" nor "Legos" in plural.

Furthermore "Fishes" is not entirely incorrect, such as when referring to multiple individual species of fish as opposed to multiple fish of the same species.
>>
>save corruption complaints growing louder among consolinas
Nothing to see here. Move along.
>>
>>149082167
>Lego(e)s is [...] correct
No. You aren't even able to spell it. Lego is an attributive adjective, describing that the bricks, sets, wheels or whatever else are manufactured by the Lego company. You have Addidas runners, not a pair of Addidases.

Both "fishes" and "sands" are correct; for example "desert sands".

I could concede defeat as I have to go to work, but I'm not going to. I'm going to say you have autism for applying gramatical rules with concern for accuracy over speed in casual conversation when no ambiguity is created by saying "Legos" or "Legoes" when to do so in the former is unbelievably common in the USA and the latter just looks like a British person trying to do it the American way. Given the original poster's point is perfectly clear, there's no reason to break it down into pedantry.

I didn't mean to delete. I'm drunk.

All video we record isn't analog since the video is just a series of images. VHS is an analog format, but the source is never analog.

I'm actually considering recording the analog on an 8-track since I will need to record 8 channels for my idea. Problem with using an 8-track, though is that the player will only playback two tracks at once. I will need to frankenstein up some device in order to play all 8 tracks at the same time. Or I could just use a regular cassette tape or something and figure out a way to seperate the tape into 8 tracks. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, though. I just need to make the basic concept work before I figure out a way to record it.

/kspg/ hasn't been about the game for a while and has been fine. The problem now is that there are limited avenues for other discussion. partially, i believe, caused by the pursuit of comfort over interest, both intentional and not.

Perhaps the userbase of the general is simply diverging making it harder for off topic posts to catch the interest of other posters.

I don't necessarily want this place to end. For /kspg/ to experience a renaissance, that is what I long after. For the manpats to come here again, to share their screenshots, their stories, their prowess. For the modders to come here again, to contribute to their work and try to make KSP a better game. For consensus to have a real meaning again, and not being a verbatim repeated sentiment to protect the current status quo, which is truly despicable.

Currently, we are nothing more than a 'radical' message that janitors should just wait until we die out instead of trying to subdue us. Nothing more than a number sign in front of an empty house. /kspg/ should be equal parts on-topic and off-topic again, to have the best of both worlds. Procedurally creating a comfy high one day only leads to a low of the same amplitude the next day. When we rebuild our culture and connect with our heritage, this general will be great again.

But right now, we only have a few schizophrenics who check our life support.

Not all of them. Same with the manpats. The thread has been good these past few days. It's the attention and drama whoring that has driven people away. Post KSP and space in general and you'll get people who want to talk about these things arriving and staying in the thread.

I've dropped in occasionally only to see nothing but "embezzlement", shitty anime and "how are you please pay attention to me" posts, worthy of tumblr. No one of value will stay in that kind of thread. And yet people are still checking in on the thread every few months. I guess you need that kind of optimism to deal with KSP. Talk about the game and the people who talk cool things about the game will find reason to stay.

>kspg will never die.

That is the problem. /kspg/ has long overstayed it's welcome. It's like a trilogy whose story finished with the second book. Nothing from the past still open to talk about, nothing new noteworthy to discuss. Just some avatarfags flinging their mental excrement at each other.

Yet the populace still holds on to their elusion of grandeur, you might know it as "comfy". We all know in the depths of our hearts that true comfyness will never reign again, yet we still come here day after day in the hope that maybe, only maybe some godlike intervention happened. We are too many to die, but too few to thrive.

The thread has been overtaken by billies, proud of their mediocrity, escaping unchallenged. Example:

>>149053086

>For the manpats to come here again, to share their screenshots, their stories, their prowess
The problem is, there's almost nothing to *do* anymore that hasn't already been done. There are no new stories to tell or impressive feats to pull off. KSP is completely stagnant and the smart people have already mined it dry.

This isn't just /kspg/'s problem but a universal problemh of culture in the internet age. When the collective knowledge of the world can dredge up parallels to almost anything already done - even if you thought of it independently - it rapidly becomes clear that there are no new stories to tell and few points of interest to share. Even the climate change deniers can't stop this level of boring recycling. The world is bleeding to death.

To be fair, not explaining the practical implications of your technical work to the community isn't desirable. If people don't understand it, make it comprehensible to them. This isn't oversimplification for Billy, but a simple necessity of communication.
>>
>>149142138
>problemh
Well, there goes any credibility I ever had.
>>
>>149142138
I think it's more a problem of culture, if anything, in the sense that we only see the same things we already know. When some dude from the russian chan's version of /kspg/ came here aeons ago because his chan was down and dumped some pictures there were clear differences between his generals crafts and our crafts. I wouldn't call his or our work better than the others, it was just different. Like wing shapes for example, which they built with more tiny pieces, instead of just slapping some big ass haulers on the fuselage like we tend to do.
>>
>>149143140
My recollection is that they were using mod-parts, which makes that less surprising. I'm going to have to dig in the archives to refresh my memory though.

While his general's craft were distinct from /kspg/ craft, I'm pretty sure one could still look up similar craft on the forums or on Reddit. If you can, the wider problem remains.

What interests me is that this is the case even though I don't use reddit except when it's the first result in a google search to resolve a technical issue

Actually, should probably have mentioned (as it's vaguely hinted by mentioning Reddit) that the broader problem is that internet "culture" as a whole is becoming more homogenized. Everyone using the same small handful of sites, with the same culture starting to run through all of them. The transfer of memes between Tumblr, 4chan and Reddit (and in remarkably short order to Facebook groupchats amongst teenagers.) shows this well.

In some ways /kspg/ is still sacrosanct. "Ok, MAN", "Unity not us", "Be a buddy not a billy", etc, are not particularly transferrable.

>These changes will aid performance both in flight and in the editors.
Nope, that's far too technical for me. Does it make less lags or more lags cus I want less lags
>>
>>149143778
You took a single line in the middle of a block of text, instead of taking the thing as a whole. That simple line is sandwiched between
>The main focus of rewriting and refactoring the game this week has been all the various PartModules and also the CrewManifest system. PartModules take advantage of caching where possible and have lower garbage hits, and CrewManifest was completely rewritten to lower garbage creation and avoid loops
>Nathanael also took a good look at the PartResource definitions, which he rewrote into a dictionary. Each PartResource is no longer a monobehaviour, considerably reducing overhead. Two simple combined-collection classes were also written.

If it had been right at the beginning, or right at the end, someone skim-reading could pick up the point. Instead, you've got to read technical details that you don't care about to get to the only relevant piece of information: "We're altering some code, This will grant better performance"
The player doesn't have to care *how* you are altering it and that detail should come after you've explained the generality of what you're doing.
>>
>>149142138
We're taking about modders here, literally creating new content and experiences. Check the strawpoll, /kspg/ has many content creators. This is why we're here rather than playing the game. We want to pull it up from the mediocrity we're experiencing. KSP brought us together because it was a new concept that hadn't been done before, but what it has left us with is the foundation of an omni-sim. Unity is open enough that we can add whatever we want. All it takes is someone to dream it, and here we are in a collection of dreamers.
>>
>>149143303
Sure they were using mod parts, but back then everyone who knew how to drag'n'drop files was using packs like B9 for their plane and SSTO endeavours. Homogenity is indeed a problem of the internet as a whole, but there are still cultural differences which have yet to be assimilated into well-known culture. The distinctiveness of /kspg/ vs russian-/kspg/ crafts shows this perfectly in my opinion. Another difference from the top of my mind is that ru-/kspg/ put their aft pitch wings on top of the yaw wing in the back. I never saw this anywhere else in the ksp community, be it from videos, leddit or the forums. This encounter with ru-/kspg/ really inspired me, I have to say.
>>
>>149144078
>Check the strawpoll, /kspg/ has many content creators.
I know, I voted in it.

The strawpoll indicates that most of our content creation tallent lies in areas other than code. We aren't talking about modders at all. We're talking about screenshot takers, space-historians and mathematicians.

Dreams are little without implementers, and implementation is a nightmare.
>>
>>149144078
>KSP isn't being fixed
>well it is being fixed but they didn't say that
>well they did say that but they didn't say it in a non technical manner
>well they did but wah, reading is hard
We're done here.
>>
>>149144256
I'm going to assume you intended to quote me.
Lines 1 and 2 weren't me.
Line 3 wasn't disproved. "I hid the simple detail in the middle of the technical terms :^) " isn't providing any information if people tune out because they didn't understand the beginning of what you said. It's a problem of basic communication.

I was highly tempted to write a completely bullshit explanation of Apollo using the most ridiculous terms possible, then hiding "A rocket will put a man in the moon lol" in the middle, but I really can't be bothered because I know that there's absolutely no point arguing the nuances of communication with someone who wasn't even the original writer of the devnote and thus won't see any practical implications of my commentary on it.

KSP's community as a whole and /kspg/ in particular are becoming less valuable places to provide high-effort content, from a personal perspective.
>>
>>149144753
If someone says they are concerned with the developement but tunes out while reading simplified synopses of developement information they aren't concerned with the developement.
>>
>>149145104
I'm not defending the 5 post deconstruction disaster. That's a completely unreadable mess.

One can be interested in the development track ("We're gonna make it lag less") without caring about the methods used to make that happen. Indeed, I'm sure the majority of the playerbase falls into that category: People who want to know what is happening but not how it will happen.
>>
>>149145241
That is what release notes are for, a quick and easy list of big changes for the dumb majority which praises everything. Dev notes are (and should be) more technical in nature. Those we are talking about are still in enough simple terms to understand with two or three google searches. You are essentially spouting "hurr they didn't write it in MY layman's terms durr", which would only hurt the dev notes. I wish they had just posted each changed LOC without any commentry so people wouldn't get such an increased sense of entitlement.
>>
>>149145651
I am essentially spouting "Stick your fucking summary at the front, not the middle"
That wouldn't hurt anything and would improve clarity greatly.
>>
>>149145689
Then go read the release notes, and preferably leave the dev notes to those who understand them.
>>
>>149145651
This. Plus the paragraph which introduced the lolfineprintwithhiddenmeaning actually explained that the end result was that the game felt faster in general. The paragraph itself explained the changes in enough detail for modders to do them too (poorly written mods slow the game down also)
>>
>>149145798
I don't read either because I don't personally care about the actual contents of the thing. My sole contention was with language, layout, and possible improvements in clarity.
>>
love how everyone's focused on one paragraph with actual content instead of this fucking sludge:
>>149053006
>>
>>149145912
Jesus Christ don't you see that it's essentially an argument of semantics you are trying to convey? Language, layout, and possible improvements in clarity are for the writer to decide, not for the reader. You just need to know that dev notes do NOT equal release notes for christ's sake. They are two different things and (most of the time) not interchangeable.

>>149145992
>actually reading this behemoth
>>
>>149145992
We're arguing over a news post when we could be discussing actual content.

What's missing from KSP as a play through space travel? We've had docking, solar panels, heat shields and EVA added. What's missing from space travel?

For me:
>building movable parts like in infernal robotics, for compact lunar rovers, Canadarms and deployable things
>space telescopes
>designing autonomous craft
>sufficient terrain detail for rover exploration or landing site selection
>an overall campaign, story or goal, like kerbals living on Duna before 2050, or the exploration of their back story that nova had planned
>>
>>149146269
>Language, layout, and possible improvements in clarity are for the writer to decide, not for the reader
The writer's purpose is to convey information to the reader. Inefficiencies in doing so can be critiqued. It's ultimately irrelevant because you're not the writer and the writer almost certainly doesn't piss his time away in this dying general, he's got better things to do like refactoring code so that you can be disappointed at 60fps instead of 30!

>You just need to know that dev notes do NOT equal release notes for christ's sake. They are two different things and (most of the time) not interchangeable.
I don't care. Moving one line to the front and making slight modifications to ensure it fits in smoothly in it's new position would do absolutely nothing to make things less clear for any developer while making things clearer to any other reader.
>>
>>149146386
So you only criticizing the autor's writing skills. If you care about readability of his dev notes so much, why don't you offer the autor to correct his writing?
>>
>>149146362
>designing autonomous craft
We have kOS already, but people don't use it as the want to build, not write code. Something like Smart Parts but with the flexibility of kOS would open automation without hand-holding up to everyone in a way that follows the game's core building activities. You wouldn't need extra parts in game, just a building window for the "circuitry" of a probe core.

BahamutoD made something like this:
https://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=FdhSNlgzhAE

Yea/Nay?
>>
>>149146652
>So you only criticizing the autor's writing skills
Yes.
> If you care about readability of his dev notes so much, why don't you offer the autor to correct his writing?
Because I don't care about the substance of the dev notes. I was bored and commenting on the quality of writing. (Well, playing devil's advocate for MAN saying "so nothing :^) " misunderstanding.)
>>
>>149145912
That you didn't read it is clear:
The paragraph prior to the technical one explains it simply, as you are requesting.

As far as good technical writing explaining the context before diving into the details, I agree entirely.
>>
>>149147168
>The paragraph prior to the technical one
The one cut off in the post above it?

It's still not very good. It does eventually say "The game is feeling a lot slicker" but it's still a bit messay. Honestly, the style of the devnotes as a whole is pretty terrible. Which is to be expected, given this is the company that gave us the utter gibberish that is contract description text.

As you've surely deduced already from all this, this is where you come in.
>>
>>149147524
>messay
HOW.

Let's pretend that was a stylistic choice.
>>
>>149147524
They switched format from the stand up meeting style of "Here is what I worked on this week" to summarising what the devs said when poked, written up by someone who doesn't speak English well.

The mission text is brutal. What would be the best way to replace it?

Not him but the reason was $2400 a year

And Bac9 had this whole thing about telling people who wanted to portray kerbals as reckless and stupid that they are incompetent hacks

https://web.archive.org/web/20150318052128/http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/entries/747-The-Making-Of-New-KSC

>It’s not Kerbal? *shrug* For some reason some people like to think Kerbals are sloppy engineers only capable of producing inherently broken designs held together by duct tape. To them, proposing something prim and proper like a NASA VAB could be built by Kerbals is ridiculous. Well, I disagree. Take a good look at the parts: at the LV-N engine, at 3-man pod, at the landing legs, at ion engine. Those are cleanly executed pieces of impressive technology. Kerbals are indifferent to safety precautions and are very excited about explosions, yes, but they make an impression of extremely capable and very competent engineers. Sure, we know they probably turned a construction crane into a vomit carousel or raced on bulldozers in the process, but I don't doubt for one second they can build buildings similar to real ones, and I don't think it would be out of character for them. Plenty of other stuff like engines is fairly close to how our human rockets look. It's unfair to mistake Kerbals for Orks from a “Certain Universe With 40k In The Name,” or to expect them to build sloppy duct-taped huts.

Which of course, once Max took over, led to

I contributed to the removal of the barn. I pointed out so many hypocrisies they initiated prerelease based on my points, and I posted the imgur album that led to Max declaring his "quitting" (firing) 1 hour later. I've also constantly discussed and connected Squad's deceitful financial tactics to their scam and have shared this with the community in an attempt to jumpstart the revolution.

I have been surprisingly successful in many of these ventures, and have had a real impact on the codebase, yet I'm treated like dirt by the Angry elements of this general, because they have no such interests.

They will ridicule my accomplishments now, and suggest I stop posting, and once I do temporarily cease posting, they too stop posting, because they are not here for genuine reasons.

Because we are under attack by Squad cronies protecting their embezzled millions of investments.

We must become an overt political tool. We must become so potent again that Squad *worries* about interfereing with this place and triggering uncontrollable drama.

I have a feeling you're here to take the revolution spirit of /kspg/ and invert it upon itself so we consume ourselves in drama rather than exacting our $150 million worth of Justice we are owed.

The timeline was perfect for if someone made a major, major screwup and disclosed their departure to the fanbase in an inappropriate way, which is what he did and what was later confirmed. Initiated means started, and I say that because I had a conversation with Turkey where I used the classic /kspg/ line that "you guys are wasting your greatest potential" by not using the fanbase as QA and it had a novel impact on him, and I said contributed, not was responsible for.

>what's the reasoning behind the fallout between he and Squad?
The full story: Squad were paying pretty shitty money. bac9 is a highly skilled designer, this expertise across modelling, texturing, shader development, and most importantly to industry, rapid workflow implementation. He got a job offer for big money doing industrial designs in industry, possibly petrochem, and departed Squad amicably.

Shortly after this, Squad teased upgradeable buildings, showing tier-zero being a poorly-realised farm scene, to the delight of billies everywhere ("YAY LITERALLY ANY CONTENT"), and the increasing unease of the regular player coming to understand Squad's development practices. bac9 posted constructive criticism (pic related), which eventually made it on to a reddit barn thread which received a lot of attention. Maxmaps posted here saying that he was contacted by friends in the gaming industry who said they were horrified that someone in the industry had publicly criticised Squad's design practices, stating that they would never hire someone who did such a thing.

Artyom is now working on a mech strategy game, Phantom Brigade, with Chad Jenkins, aka C7Studios, former Squad staff and creator of the airplane parts.

The sad thing is, I would vaguely like a barn tier. Especially for airplanes, and especially if coupled with a propeller engine. (inb4 whining, remember props are also useful for Duna and Eve where jets don't work.), even moreso if some sounding rockets were included (i.e. below V2 tech level, almost at hobbyist tier, but possibly doubling as SRBs for 1.25m parts.)

But when you say "Barn" I think of pic related, not the lazy heap of junk SQUAD had put together. I'm honestly dumbfounded that something could come to be known as "The barn" and then not use the iconic image of an *actual* barn

I love this post. I just want to add that while Bac9 was working with squad they all were on permanent vacation, depending on him to deliver all content for devnotes and much of the content for updates. Yet he never received recognition commensurate to his contribution to the game.

What pisses me off is I remember hearing Bac9 was not allowed to work on parts because Clara was handling that and the new KSC was a test for him.

Someone Hi Max! decided he failed that test. And in a way he did, because reckless, incompetent kerbals would NEVER make such a sophisticated structure....

the KSC is the single greatest thing that ever happened to KSP, yet because it threatened Max's ability to control the scope, it has been treated like the unloved child of KSC development.

God I hate Maxmaps so fucking much. Can you imagine if Bac9 had been given his salary and position? /kspg/ might actually love KSP.

The barn is a key example of good intentions being left at the wayside during implementation, probably due to staff turnover.

You like the barn because it gives KSP a backstory, a sense of place, of style, a setting, goals... You, NewPlayer, have scraped together the funds to buy some disused buildings in an unoccupied area of land near the coast, to attempt to follow your dream of reaching space.

It has a basis in reality too. Here's Boeing's first factory in 1917, after the concept of powered heavier than air aircraft had been proven possible only 14 years before.

Except KSP was never about being a business tycoon until the cancer started taking hold.

The key moment was when they decided to make an artificial backstory and fill out the rest of the game's content with filler rather than reach for the stars and work on future tiers and future tech.

That's when Squad stopped dreaming.
>>
>>149167991
"Tycoon mode" was in Harv's listed goals for the game, but goals evolve as the project progresses. KSP was originally a 2D phone game.

What was your dream for KSP, anon? You start out like NASA, with the current top-tier buildings as your base. There's no science, no crappy contrived tech tree.

We're sitting in July of 2013. 0.21 has just landed, adding Artyom's shiny new buildings. and craters on the Mun, but rubber rockets, low frame rates and infiniglide are still huge problems. /kspg/ argues over mechjeb and how the parts are balanced against each other, as all are available as soon as you start a game.

Meanwhile, Squad meets to discuss their plan to spend all of 2014 developing an ill thought-out science and career mode, seeking to give people a reason to go beyond the Mun.

But first, they decide to ask the seasoned manpats of /kspg/ what direction the future of the game should take.

What say you?

Demonstrate to Venture Capitalists you are teaching young people how to build and launch rockets and understand orbital mechanics. Spend time and MONEY intentionally undermining yourself by admitting that you will have to sacrifice some of the “huge future payoff” to do this right.

Sell 50% of the equity to investors for an immediate $100m boost to development budget. Use this influx of investment to hire a capable dev team and pay them living wages. Implement modern development methodologies, a development schedule (1 solid build every 3 months, experimental builds once a month, etc.) and try to stick to it.

Constantly try to improve not only the quality of the gameplay experience, but also the quality and speed of your development capabilities. Meanwhile, step back and consider the game as an artifice. What values does it promote? What skills does it demand? What real world communities will be impacted by this game? Modders and budding aerospace/scientific individuals then become your ideal user persona.

Stop developing KSP as a game you can one day port to consoles for a payoff. Start developing it as an educational (and explosive!) framework/ecosystem for modders, players and educators (hullo!) to interact and assist one another in increasing the quality and scope of KSP ad infinitum.

You do it right and you set up some renewable income streams ($1 a month for public servers on multiplayer, for instance) and while you don’t have a huge payoff you can embezzle and launder, you do have a nest egg that will never deplete and will only grow in size over time, assuming you put care and love into developing KSP into the greatest iteration it possibly can be.

But instead, they put Maxmaps in charge, and here we are.

You've made development stable, but what are they actually developing? Their time goes into improving the game's experience, giving us the aerodynamics, heating and more stable part joints that we have today. What they're left with is polished, but shallow. Your artists, without work, start producing shitty promotional videos. The game's experience needs to be expanded, not just cleaned up. Players scream for new planets, more and bigger engines, career mode, shinier graphics, multiplayer, UFOs, combat, warp drives, other star systems...

What direction did everyone want to see the game take? I would've like to have seen the game turn towards population management: Make kerbals into a multiplanetary species. Design, launch and construct stations, settlements, O'Neil cylinders etc. This requires off-kerbin resource extraction, plus scheduling automated background resupply missions. Basically an exploration of what humanity is hoping to do in the next 500 years.

Squad tried and failed to make a game because, according to you, they "stopped dreaming". Your response to what the dream was? Stop dreaming and don't make it into a game. Framework for modders? That is what the game is. Do you disagree that there's a huge modding community? KSP Edu was a complete money grab and should have been stock, yes. You haven't said one constructive or concrete change you'd like to see in KSP, only the equivalent of Billy's "I want more parts!".
Expand on your concept. A framework/ecosystem: A site for uploading mods, videos and tutorials? A BBS? Instructions on how to use the forums/spacedock/youtube? None of this makes the game non-shit, because neither you nor anyone else has any "dreams" left.
>>
>>149178042
This post is a wonderful combination of Mirk and Angry Anon. Mirk, pushing me to further explain, and Angry Anon, hating space and all.

Squad tried to own the end-to-end product so they could maximize profits and minimize the amount of time the money was spent tied up in an ambiguous status.

Are you seriously arguing that Squad supports modders? And that the firings of 2013 don't even subtly reflect how they "stopped dreaming"?

I can see us going down a million rabbit holes, well, more precisely, you dragging me down them. But I have no interest in that. It is clear from the day maxmaps arrived he decided he was going to co-opt the good intentions of many developers, modders, fans (investors) and lovers of space into playing into his vision of how HIS career should go.

Why do you think career mode plays like a sociopath's warcraft/fallout feverdream?

And trust me, he wants more than ever to be able to *own* this console edition (assuming it sells well) and say he produced it and brought it to the market and he is a developer and develops / adds many things.

Yet, when I look at the KSP of 2013 and the KSP of today, all I see is wasted money, time and intentional bloat, which no cohesive gameplay experience, stabile codebase, or sense of purpose or roadmap or accomplishment.

1.0 says it all. Career mode and version numbers have more to do with Maxmaps' sense of self worth at the time of release than they do with the proof-of-concept developed within a false paradigm that we call KSP.

Because I know you'll claim I'm avoiding your question. I'll preemptively say you asked lots of angry questions that I've partially answered. My overall answer is that Squad, once they realized the potential monetary gains, in 2013, has had a corrupt, fraudulent and illegal business plan that utilizes intentional failure to deliver a complete product to justify a large payoff of investments.

Whether I can propose a better future or not has nothing to do with it.

I don't care, I've lost hope. There will be no day of the rope for these people. It'll slowly deflate, those two will make off with the money and fund some shitty projects before giving up and living on the interest of the profits they made on KSP, Maxmaps will remain a literally who with meh-tier gaming industry wages, Harv will be found in a ditch somewhere, and all the modders will fuck off to the latest indie meme game until Billy appears and the cycle repeats again. This is the way things are and the way things will be. You expect a terrific explosion on the launch pad to bring this entire enterprise to the ground: I know that what we are dealing with is an angry alligator.

But I can't stand this senseless blather about how you're going to bring down a worthless pawn and ruin his invariably shitty career progression while letting the only two people who're even remotely likely to see punishment for "embezzlement" are the ringmasters.

You are shooting the small town Sheriff because Richard Nixon is corrupt.

My end goal is to enjoy myself, if indeed I have an end goal. I'm not averse to fighting battles I know I'll lose, provided they are the right battles.

Your optimism that the clock can be turned back is quite unwarranted. One can turn the clock back as much as he likes: Time itself marches forwards. The moment and the spark in KSP have been lost. All that remains is to punish those responsible. Not for justice: For pleasure. For the innate sadistic pleasure of seeing someone who has wronged you be wronged themselves.

Adrian and Ez (Fuck typing his stupid name out over and over, he's Ez from now on.) can't serve as symbols merely because we haven't made them symbols. Maxmaps is only a symbol because he's highly public. By continuing to draw attention to Max and leaving absolutely no focus on those who gave Max orders, you ultimately miss the point entirely.

Maxmaps lies hanging from a tree. We did it! Except Adrian and Ez are still laughing it up in Tahiti as SQUAD Films prepares the KSP movie (Directed by Stanley Kubrick's ghost, featuring additional scenes from Arthur C. Clarke obtained via Ouija board, Dedicated to the memory of Maxmaps.)
>>
>>149179013
>Are you seriously arguing that Squad supports modders?
Yes. Squad have always provided some level of support to modders. Every part mod is created using a set of part tools that they release for modders alone. Every non-part mod is loaded by a mod loader designed and extended by Squad in response to the modding community. They've been open to discussion, explanation of how stuff works, why limitations exist, and to add or modify code solely for the benefit of modders. Their support has been far from adequate, particularly in documentation, but to say that they don't support modders is false.

To me the firings are an example of the beginning of the project being micromanaged by Ezequiel Ayarza and Adrian Goya, once they realised that their "get Felipe to shut up" project was actually generating enough money for their personal movie script and record label, respectively somehow conveniently forgotten by MAN.

Career mode plays poorly because it was a poorly thought out concept, lacking in a core foundation of fun gameplay, that should have been scrapped and redesigned at the first signs of being un-fun. 2014 was lost entirely to it, likely due to sunk cost fallacy and community pressure to deliver anything.

I'm turning back to 2013 for ideas, dreams and concepts for what KSP's gameplay and expansion should have been after that point because I intend to build them. Not everything in the past three years has been a wash. The aerodynamics and thermal systems are far more advanced and anti-Billy than would have been achievable or accepted from Squad at the time. Half of their dev team is now made of modders pissed off at their code, bugs, mod support and realism, and still remain a part of the modding community, more willing to support modders than anyone before. Since Max's departure, we're in better shape now than ever before to make the /kspg/ version of KSP we once talked about, but it seems like everyone who gave a damn has left.

Originally, the only mods were part mods, because Squad built the part loader to load mod files too. They didn't allow code/plugin files for fear of malicious code. Eventually, modders realised they could get code running in a hacky, limited and mostly reliable manner by misusing the unit testing interface that Squad accidentally included in the release. On seeing this used, rather than banning these modders for hacking or some bullshit, they (eventually) added a (much more useful) dedicated mod loading interface, KspAddon. Plugin mods were allowed under one condition: Their source code had to be made public, in an attempt to ward off malicious code. This is the single best thing to have happened to KSP's modding community. It discouraged locked down and paid plugins, and fostered a community where people worked together, rather than jealously guarding whatever secrets they'd learned from undocumented KSP. You can take any mod, see how it was done, and tweak it to your own liking, or even build beyond it to whatever you want. For the alternative, see what Kragrathaea attempted to do. Being the first to figure out how the planetary terrain system worked and how to make new planets, Krag kept mod off-forum so he could role-play and tease his awesome power to an audience of hungry Billy. Once the forum community made their own version, it was open to all, and there are now loads of planet mods.

Not so much "organic"; part intentional, part taken by force by modders, followed by actual support and the occasional accidental good decision.

Pretty sure those bugs were marked as "won't be fixed until we upgrade to the next version of Unity". Intentionally released broken in anticipation of being completely ripped out and replaced in the next release.

In the release that launched on consoles. Kek.
>>
>>149184552
Perhaps "Came about" was too ambiguous.

The only mods to which I was referring were part mods.

Even then, the part-intentional part-by-force nature of plugins is remarkably organic: It started with a mistake, not intent and definitely not SQUAD support. Once the genie was out of the bottle, they started to support it.
>>
>>149184853
It has certainly been an interesting and far from simple process, but what it leaves us with is a system that lets you swap out ever-increasing portions of the game. We went from Unity 4.6.4 to Unity 5.2.4. The most recent version, 5.3.6, was released yesterday. 5.2.4 was released in December. It took until April to get the myriad of things it broke fixed again.

Unity 5 messed up wheels for everyone. Unity said they'd get their act together in the next release. In the meantime, Squad bought Vehicle Physics Pro to keep wheels in the game for the U5 release. They were still buggy as shit, but better than a game that won't load. No one would have accepted removing the wheels entirely. In the latest versions, Unity has cleaned up their act a bit, so we'll see how that goes.

VPP also adds support for wheel sound effects, skid marks, tyre tracks and skid smoke. Neither Squad nor modders have set them up in game at this point. Lots of KSP is like that. Tons of little features that just need someone to look at them.

That's an interesting plot. My only question being, if they voluntarily sunk their own ship (you said "intentional failure to deliver a complete product"), why is the game still here and still under post-release development ?

Look at Starforge, where developpers had rushed the release to quickly abandon ship. What happened to them, and to other examples of failed early-access projects ? Do you see any points in common ? Their staff is dismissed, their code is abandonned, and their community is dead.

I don't know how many developers there are at Squad atm, how big is the community, but judging from online activities and media reception, they are far from that scenario. And you're telling us they keep on deluding everyone with a "corrupt, fraudulent and illegal business". Sure, why not. In this case, I wonder why no one has seen it before, why no one has informed mainstream media of the fraud, and why Squads staff members are not tried before commercial courts.

Who even gives a shit about GP2, anyway
All it'd be is just more of the same shit, just with different colors and surface gravity
Big whoop
>>
>>149190641
Well that kinda goes without saying. I was mainly bitching about the lack of (decent) wheels.
>>
>>149190859
It would be briefly interesting, especially if they gave us rings and moons.

They offered it to us and now they won't give it. I'm upset by that. I want another stock planet, if only to give me 5 minutes of novelty.
>>
>>149190260
VR and wingmen over voice chat got me over a month out of it.
>>
>>149190859
if it had a shitton of moons it'd at least be cathartic.
if all we get is GP2 I would not feel Squad had delivered a complete game.

The two times you made a thread previously with all your bullshit, they both fell off the catalog.

True or False? I want to hear it from you.

Also, so those who are concerned about "beating me" do not have to worry, I will not be making a thread. Please do not rush a shitty thread for this reason. Whoever does it please preserve the filter language, heed its rules, and please do not fuck up the "previous thread" those are important when going through the archive.
