I'm about to lose my first colony, no-one left except Amelie, a 16 year old engineer, desperately trying to save her father. He had his legs torn to shreds by a frag grenade, the only mercy being that his attacker killed himself in the process.

Amelie was possibly the brightest colonist, but she's not a surgeon and she doesn't have the supplies. Her father will die, but tending to him is the only thing she can do now to keep her mind off the disease that is slowly killing her.

It's my first colony, a first of many, and while it didn't make it very far it is sad to see it go.

It's still an Alpha but the core is already made so you can still enjoy it a lot despite the current lack of "content"
You don't have Z-level, water exists but isn't used atm, can't make babies and stuff.
On the other hand, you have temperature effect, power management, trading and an endgame goal to achieve amongst other stuff
It's still pretty fun once you get into it, just don"t get the storyteller under anything than rough and avoid the one that isn't Cass or Randy

I've been following it around for like a month or two, you can see other people palying for the last 3 years give better input, but from what I see in the forum , the dev is pretty active, it's just that given the current state, major update might need a code's rework bigger than expected.

I've read a dev comment about babies earlier this week, and I agree with his point of you regarding the matter : tl;dr babies might exist, but the growing curve and time flow makes it hard to concieve, you'll see that colonies will usually last 10 years before ending the game.

Az for Z-levels, early ideas are still in debate.

Of course features will be implemented, improved and added, and the game is moddable so it can add mechanics while waiting for official features (I recommend you check mods like Combat realism to give you an idea of what's possible)

I'm fairly sure that closing and opening doors does not affect the room's temperature, since I've been using an airlock system with both doors permanently opened in my corpse storage and walk-in fridge. However temperature does radiate across walls, so double wall your fridges.

I have not played A14 yet, so what I said might have been fixed since A13.

I'm actually running a Lost Tribe run right now. "Challenge" difficulty and I haven't lost a single unit.
HOWEVER I'm playing on a mountainous region. My strategy is as follows
>RAID! Draft all villagers
>Set up my ranged units behind sandbags at a choke point between two mountains
>Split the melee force into two, go around the mountain(s) and pinscher attack
>AND THE ZERGLINGS GOT THE SURROUND
That's pretty much it. Melee units are actually really strong IF you can get into melee range.
Grenades suck, but you can micromanage your units to dodge them.
Rifles get demolished by proper melee [s]gorilla[/s] warfare, you need to watch out for pdw's and shotguns

Basically when you on the brink of starvation the only people you want in your colony are god tier people that you are willing to take a chance on. Autismo isn't necessarily a bad colonist but he's not good enough for me to be okay with him there when everyone is about to starve to death.

Considering the threat level isn't just dictated by colonist number, but by the total wealth of the base, I'd say she's pretty boned unless she makes turrets and deadfalls, or is she can trade quickly with a slave trader.

Yeah, alpha 13 really cranked down the number of trade ships spawned and has a higher number of trade caravans and visitors who have some stuff to trade. I know someone made a mod to increase the frequency of trade ships, but I forget if its alpha 14 compatible yet.

I've lost the scenario about 8 times. Went towards the eastern mountains and dug in, started a fire, then put up some wind turbines and rushed to use the geysers. Indoor crops were a necessity, so built a huge room just for that.
My last one I almost completed the ship, but the only doctor I had decided to go insane and do work on all the other colonists(had 4 left) and in between the mech raids and the regular raids all the dogs were dead.

The one before that, we had a small fire thanks to an RNG Wire, it started in the only entrance to the hydroponics, door was damaged so it opened slowly, every one of my dudes that tried going through that door was torched, panicked and went into a room with a temperature of 400 celcius, thus burning down.

I FUCKING LOVE THIS SCENARIO, as hard as fuck as it is, its fun, try this shit out. When I complete this shit, I'm posting it in the map's comments.

I did dark green jungle life for a bit but honestly if my colonists can walk freely around the land and there's resources everywhere it gets dull. I play on ice sheet ones. No trees barely any animals. Once you get a handle on things it becomes super comfy. People inside comfy heated mountain bases. Weather outside raging. Only.thing I wish is they changed clothes when they entered warmer areas.

You can grow hay for them to eat, it grows fast and only animals eat it.
They are somewhat useful in raids, just to eat bullets, and you can of course eat them later.
They are also useful during winter, because its free fresh meat thats reliably right next to your warm house.

There are other mechanics like breeding, (maybe wool and milk?) that I haven't gotten far enough to explore yet.
If you are playing on a lower difficulty setting, it seems animals aren't needed, and may appear useless. Kind of like alchemy in The Witcher games, you only realize how good it is on harder difficulty, and it seems useless on easy.

Get the shield for them. Use them as a flanker to go around the back of your enemy while your shooters engage and take the brunt of it. That way your melee dude has an enemy meat shield away from your shooters.

Another option is to have them sit back and if they enemy rushes you with melee guys, send in your melee guys to protect your shooters. Also, pause and micro your shooters.

The animal thing synergizes with melee people, cause animals are mlee to, so if you flank with your guy and a bunch of animals, your chances of success are higher.

Nah, I manually walked them behind a rock/mountain/whatever you call it, they were shooting from a good angle. Maybe some friendly fire, since it was all thick there, but I did flank the raiders with that possibility in mind.

Also, if any more experienced played have an idea, is the initial rifle or pistol a better weapon? Rifles fire so slow, and the extra range seems to not be worthwhile in raids because of the low rate of fire.

Rich loner start gives you a charge rifle, which will instakill basically anyone that comes at you early if you don't suck at shooting. There won't be any big raids when you have few people unless your colony has a metric fuckton of value.

Everything takes fucking forever unless you have companions though, so I wouldn't recommend trying to solo all the way to spaceship. Overall it seems like a much stronger start though because you start with turret tech, a charge rifle, and some Gold (in addition to like 1200 more silver than a standard colony).

Reposting to give this thread some energy

Played for like 12 hours yesterday.

I saved a person from raiders and she joined my colony, but her stats were shit so I used her as an organ mule.
I took out her kidney, lung, jaw, both eyes, nose, both ears. I replaced her limbs with wooden ones and then removed them. She's now a kissless, hugless, legless, armless missing a a lot of organs.

She's blind, cant talk, cant walk, cant maniuplute anything and is bed ridden in the hospital. My other colonists have to feed her.

Before I took her legs, she went berserk and tried to kill my colony. Since she didnt have eyes , she coudnt see where to shoot so I had my colonists shoot her and took her back to the hospital.

She was real upset after I took her organs and her arms/legs. Her mood was 'on the verge of breaking' for about 10 days in game. She coudn't though, because she had no arms or legs.

Eventually though, she came around and accepted her fate. She keeps my other colonists company when they get injured and have to go to the hospital. She gives my colonists negative mood because she is 'disfigured' and has 'creepy breathing', but she keeps them company.

Her mood finally went up so I rewarded her. I took off her double eyepatches and replaced them with solid gold eyeballs. They don't allow her to see, but they look cool.

Make a rule, only 3 rerolls allowed. So when you are about to hit the reroll, you have to think if what you have is so bad, because else you are stuck with what comes after.

That shot shattered his spine, rendering him unable to move, use his arms, or talk. Later he had his jaw shot off and an eye burned out from the crossfire when his fellows came to rescue him and push back the raiders

He died 2 days later from euthenasia due to the fact that the colony could no longer afford to feed a mouth that could no longer help provide for the rest, He was survived by his lover and fiance, May, our cook, who also lost her right arm and an ear in that firefight

I later used his sarcophogas as a sort of alter for the chappel that would later see the marriage of the two people who crash landed with him, Santiago. the deep space miner, and Spiffy, the liberal arts teacher.

They grow things very quickly, which is great if you don't have a lot of farming space to work with.
Sun lamps require a lot of power though, and a solar flare will fuck up your hydroponics crops.

One of the mods I'm using is called Vegetable Garden, which adds, among other things, steel and plasteel crops which can be grown and then smelted into the resource. Hydroponics are great for them since they normally take fucking ages to grow.

1. Micromanage what your colonists do when they start, because even with manual work priorities they'll do dumb shit like hunting squirrels before hauling food to a freezer.

2. Stone blocks are the shit- make sure you've got a colonist with at least 10 construction and rush stonecutting research immediately.

3. Fertile soil is handy as FUCK. In only a week or so, you can have enough rice for an entire season if you've got a big enough plot.

4. Stone chunks slow raiders and colonists alike down, while providing a small amount of cover. You can make a stone moat around your base to slow down melee attackers, with the trade-off that attackers using guns will have cover.

5. Corn can be eaten without getting the raw food debuff since it's just corn, so grow it as emergency food.

If all else fails, just cheese it with a killbox.

-distance maters a lot, too much time is lost walking around. Try to shorten work comutes as much as possible (like placing food storage adjacent to the kitchen)

-specialize your colonists, especially for things like cooking, planting/herding and defense

-keep the house clean and properly floored

-give the colonists some time for fun before sleeptime so they all go to sleep around the same time (instead of having someone sleeping in the morning because he decided to go grab something in the other side of the map). This also lets them socialize which gives nice mood points

-don't overwhelm the colonists with orders, most likely they'll mess up everything.

-parkas make you work and move slower, only those exposed to frigid weather should be using them. Also wool has huge insulation bonuses.

-turrets draw a lot of attention from invaders, they also explode when destroyed. Use this to your advantage.

-EMP granades stun mechanoids, normal granades deal a lot of damage to standing targets (you can also choose where you want to aim with them by clicking the granade image)

-you eventualy want to be friendly with the tribespeople, they are weak but just too numerous to be dealt with easely

jackets give decent cold insulation and so do tuques, parkas are good for those settlers you have fighting/working outside. In the info panel it says how much insulation they give

The quality and the materials clothing is made are the ultimate factor though, wools give bonus cold insulation and devilstrand/hyperweave give combat defenses. Skins are decent overall.

I'm just so mad right now. When I last played in alpha 13, I was pretty bad, but I could usually survive on challenge for a year or so until raiders learned to use mortars. Now I can't even survive for 2 seasons on ROUGH because my pawns are fucking retards and raiders are relentless. I think haze is the worst. Also is it smart to advance slowly? Basically keep my bases value as low as possible. Don't stockpile valuable shit but only stuff like raw food while researching the bare essentials.

So far an in-game year in and I've only gotten a 3 man raid under Randy Random with some survival guns. I'm a tribe, so no tribes have assaulted me yet. They usually come to trade. I'm still living in wooden huts in the outside. The land is a fucking annoying marsh with almost no big open areas to basically build a mega-structure in. But I'm tempted to make a "cool shape" base.

Either a giant circle or a symbol of some sort. I don't like making bottlenecks or what you guys would call efficient bases. I want to give my citizens freedom to walk wherever and stargaze freely.

Also is there a /vg/ list of mods everyone suggests to get? I heard someone mention "Fluffy" on the workshop. What are those?

Oh and about that hydroponics thing- there's an item that can grow food inside. Devilstrand, a mushroom you grow to make strong fabric for end-game clothing, takes a very long time to grow and is difficult to keep healthy. Most people used hydroponics to easily keep devilstrand growing, but you can't do that anymore, it can only be grown outside now.

oints determine how strong raids are, the more points a raid has, the bigger (or better equipped) the raid will be.
For each 1000 points of wealth in the overview screen, raids grow 13 points stronger. For each colonist you have, raids grow 45 points stronger, no matter how good at combat the colonist is. There's also a time rampup, with two factors that multiply each other. This means the game becomes exponentially more difficult as time passes.
Any raids over 1000 have their growth rate halved and for any raids over 2000 points it's halved again, to make late game more manageable. Also, if any of your colonists is knocked out or dies, the time factors are reduced to give you a chance to recover.

Scaling doesn't affect raid timing, only the strength. A dead/incapacitated colonist reduces the time based difficulty ramp-up, so raids are temporarily weakened. The reduction is much less significant when you have a high healthy population, though.
If you want to reduce the difficulty, there's a "simple" trick: incapacitate all your colonists save for one, who will tend to them and nurse them back to health. This will completely erase all difficulty ramp-up, which can cut raids to one third their size. It only works well in the late game, though, after about two years or longer.

For pirate traders, you've got to have the Comms machine built. Then they've got a random chance of appearing.

There's several types of comms traders, so it can take a while for it to cycle through to one you need. If you've got useless prisoners, it's probably better to let them go unless they'd sell for a lot.

And yes, you can sell organs. Non-psychopathic colonists will get a mood debuff, however.

We need thin walls and fences already. I want to make a hospital but it's really stupid that you have to make a giant walls between all the patient or they get "disturbed sleep" all the time. I want fences with gates so I can make farm areas without making massive walls.

Also palisades and shit needs to get in already. AI should target walls before palisades and palisades would obviously be strong as hell but costly to make.

I believe the grow/rest period starts when you plant it, not when the day starts, so if you plant it in the dead of night, it will rest during the day.

you could also use this to your advantage, making a cycle of about 4 or so feilds of the same crop growing at different times and being planted at different intervals, and if you do dayshift/eveningshift/nightowlshift like i do, then you can maximize productivity thru out the day, making it so that every shift has at least one harvest per season.

Ice Sheet. During winter if there's volcanic winter active it can drop to lower than -100, and stuff will literally just not spawn as parkas+turque and the Cold Lover trait is noy rnough to prevent hypothermia. Its just the colonists versus the cold and whatever mechanoids you activate in tombs.
